    Nothing is more selfless than pulling your phone out of your pocket, adjusting the lens to make sure it's in the perfect position, doing a good deed, walking back to your phone, putting the video through editing software to adjust the white balance and exposure levels, adding text that took you an hour to come up with and scrolling endlessly through your saved songs to find a sad song to overlay the video you spent hours filming and editing

      Talking someone down is HARD! We once (probably three years ago) came across a teenager on the wrong side of the barrier on a bridge. Us and a few other passers-by tried to get him back and he wouldn't have it. He was only about 19, drunk as arseholes and had a row with his girlfriend. Then she showed up hysterical and tried starting to f*cking climb over herself! "If you jump, I'm coming with you!!!" and all that. Stupid drunk teenagers could have both ended up injured or dead. The police came along after they'd been called and we left it in their hands. (The girl actually managed to drop her phone in the river, and was even more hysterical about that than her lad being where he was, so thats how serious she was. It was infuriating)
      It was a fairly low bridge over a river so he was probably at more risk from drowning than the fall.

    I used to work in a national park and I had some time off my job so I went to a canyon and just sat on the edge and read a book, I had a tourist spot me and awkwardly ask, “hey you’re not depressed or anything are you? Are you ok?” And sure it was awkward at the time but I think about that and really appreciate his intentions. No filming, he wasn’t loud about it, just a human checking in on another human

The fact that they make this all happy and nonchalant drives me up the wall, someone who is seriously in a position like that doesn't just turn around and give someone a hug and walk away from it, attempts are always at risk of suicide for the rest of there life, once you jump over that wall to attempt, it majority of the time is your first response once again when something else serious happens in your life .. F*** that guy and whoever thought this was a great idea, suicide is nothing to take lightly and should be taken seriously and with handled with compassion not a f****** skit to get views, to anyone who sees this who may struggle with there mental health, find people you can talk to about your emotions and know it's okay to have those feelings, but more importantly a therapist can go a serious long way when taken seriously, there a safe confidential place to express your feelings, and thank you again for talking about this goof moist.. much love everyone, we need more of it!

I just happened to be the closest person there so adrenaline kicked in and I used my belt to tie a tourniquet, and held pressure on the wound to try and stop the bleeding. My point is, I never once thought "I should film this", also a huge crowd formed around us until the EMTs got there and not one of those people were filming either, most were instantly trying to help, because that is what normal decent people do. Like myself, they were all so caught up in what was happening. Are they gonna live?" when they're unconcious is fucking wild. When I checked on that guy that was freezing to death, I checked his pulse and tried to wake him up, shook him, etc. and I couldn't get a respnse out of him but he was breathing, I laid him down on his back all the way and threw an emergency blanket on him and called EMS. Not once in that whole situation did I think of recording it. Luckily the EMT's got there within a couple minutes and were able to just barely get a response out of the guy, apparently he suffered some kind of diabetic black out/possible seizure so he laid down to prepare for it and had been there for hours, it was 8F and he was laying on packed ice on the side walk. They loaded him up and took him to the ER and I was on my way.

    I have had to talk to someone on the verge of something like this before and it was 2 hours, mostly just waiting and reassurance and it went by in what felt like minutes. It was sour and frightening, there wasn’t any immediate risk, but if the situation was walked away from it most likely wouldn’t have had a happy ending if you get where i’m going. We had to spend half a bloody hour on hold waiting for a helpline and even then it was a mostly fruitless half hour on the phone before it was hung up. Eventually it was all over and the person is safe now, but never, ever should something like this be underestimated, it is incredibly worrying and stressful and never ends by just some simple hug, it’s just disappointing to see that this person so drastically underrepresented the issue.

They hung out the rest of the night, drinking and just talking. I’m so happy my dad was able to talk through to him, & be there for him that night.
    A decade later, my uncle Sal took his life in 2006. This was a different uncle. I really wish that he had someone to talk to that night. If he did, you never know, he could still be alive today.

Most cases I've seen of people preventing suicide, the victim is overwhelmed with emotions and won't be able to react rationally to someone suddenly grabbing you. theres actually people like this and its shocking, to say the least, these people are as equivalent to the people who pretend to help homeless people, give them food, an apartment, etc. but right after the cameras cut off they ask for everything back and throw them back on the streets, they do it all for views and fame and those people always seem to originate from tiktok.

      @@piiewithtwoeyes It's not true that a lot of people care. I've talked extensively with other suicidal people and they all seem to have the same impression. Most people tell you how much they'd help someone who is suicidal, and when you're suicidal they're indifferent and sometimes - I don't know by what mechanism - they become verbally abusive. Suddenly they treat you like trash that needs to be discarded.
      That obviously includes people like family members or therapists or colleagues, etc.
      For me personally, it would annoy my family if I died because of the social problems associated with having a relative die and because of the cost of a funeral. No, that's not a false impression, that's what they told me.
      But it is what it is.

    • @waltzman
      @waltzman Рік тому

      @@iexist.imnotjoking5700 Obviously I don't know what your life is like, but that sounds more like you have a shitty family than that people as a whole don't care. If I were you, I'd try to meet new people and surround myself with friends that genuinely care for me. I can guarantee you that there are people out there like that, who will deeply care about you and your wellbeing. It's just hard to find them, sometimes. As for suicidal people having the impression that people don't care about them, I would say that when you're depressed, it's a lot easier to think that you don't matter, and that nobody cares for you. I should clarify, I am by no means a mental health specialist, and I don't have a lot of experience with this subject, so I'm sorry if I've come off as grating or preachy. I know that it probably doesn't mean much, since I'm a random internet guy, but I hope that you find people that care about you.

      I can attest to this in some aspects. My first failed attempt roughly a decade ago, a janitor saw me lurking in the small inaccessible balcony connected to the side window of the highest floor in my university dormitory (it's an apartment building the university rented next to a busy main street, and the topmost floor is the 20th or so) by chance, when I adjusted my cramped position there after I fought with myself to not jump off all morning. Our eyes directly met the moment I looked inside when I raised my head slightly above the window pane and I or they didn't even hear each other's presence before that moment. Then they scurried off like they'd seen a ghost and I was discouraged to do it there since then. None of my classmates even noticed my skipping class for that day nor that they cared either lol. It's such a baffling period of my life and it took me a decade long to slowly process that it's just me who has this problem. I did talk to my family recently though.

So many times I've visualized myself at the top of that parking garage trying to help her down. So many times I've blamed myself, tried to figure out if there was a way I could know, or change something, call her out of the blue. But I wasn't there. I truly hope the guy who did the video never has to be in that position for real.

She was weilding a pair of large scissors. Which I had to wrestle away from her while trying to call for help. It was highly stressful and emotional, the trip to the hospital, the days after etc. I've also been at that point where I myself attempted it. It's very mentally exhausting and soul sucking.
