I think the one thing everyone is missing is your hands! The tone and way you play is awesome. I subscribed to this video because of your tone and style. There is sooooo much crap out there, this was so refreshing and exciting to hear. Goes to show how little you need to create incredible tone. Just dialled your settings into my DSL40. Wow. Played a Les Paul into it. Sound was amazing. Low, mid, high, all there. None choking the others. Play softer, get a response. Turn the gtr vol down, get a different response. I'm gonna buy some superglue and fix theses settings. Thanks so much. I didn't move all of my knobs that much but the difference was huge.

Sounds great. The dsl40c is an awesome amp. I still run mine with the stock tubes and get a killer brown sound. It sounds great thru the stock speaker or my jcm800 cab(Rola 80s). Ive come to find a big key to Eds sound is pushing the front end a bit. I used to use PAF style pickups straight to Marshall but it just don"t cut it. I actually get much closer with my Les Paul w/ dirty fingers pickups. You gotta push the preamp, the power amp and the spkr to really get Eds sound... full of harmonics, sustain & high end sizzle. Cheers!

Thanks man! I agree totally. I used to use lower output pickups for the clarity, but the EVH pickups still have that clarity while kicking the hell out of the front end. Spark pedal helps too, and of course, volume is always a big factor.

@RJ-If8ex, The DSL40CR sounds so darn good that you won't mind getting a reverb pedal to compensate. Unbelievable how good this amp sounds, no pedals needed except a reverb and maybe a wah wah of you use them. I was at first skeptical about buying this amp because, for a big name such as Marshall I felt it was too economically accessible and therefore of low quality and just a scam to rob the newbies impressed with big names. However, I was wrong. This baby is top quality in every way and sounds like it was built by Augustus Owlsley Stanley...and that's saying something. He designed and built the sound systems for both Fillmore's East and West as well as the Grateful Dead's "Wall of sound" speaker system, of which they still use today. If a pesky little problem develops, ie., tube replacement etc., it's worth it to repair it or replace the tube because, this amp's sound quality can only be found in amps costing two to three times as much or more.🙂

Thanks so much for posting this video. in case this helps anyone trying to recreate this: I came really close to recreating this sound with the same Marshall amp and same EVH speaker but without changing the tubes. I used a modeler for the pedals. At first it sounded absolutely awful. I figured out that if I reduce the level coming from my guitar in the input block of modeler, suddenly the sound improves drastically. If you try this and use real pedals, consider buying a pedal that pads the input signal from your guitar. That should accomplish the same thing. Before I reduced the input level it sounded better with low output pickups but after reducing the input level it sounds great with high output pickups. By the way, the EVH speaker is bulky and heavy but sounds great once you figure out how to set everything up correctly.

As an owner of a JCM2000 DSL100, this is a killer sound! The only thing I've noticed with any variation of a DSL, early models to present, is that the tone shift button sounds great when playing by yourself or jamming to a track. But as soon as you get in a full band setting, that button turns into the "disappearing guitarist" switch. Lol.

I just came across your video. That's some wicked playing. Wow! I have a DSL40C. There is one thing I noticed on your amp eq settings. You have your Tone Shift selected/engaged and your Middle Eq set at 2. The manual for the DSL40C, regarding the Tone Shift function: the Middle Eq needs to be turned down to zero BEFORE engaging the Tone Shift function. I know here are some differences between the DSL40CR and the DSL40C models. The Tone Shift function is one of the features that is unchanged, including the middle Eq setting at zero prior, Im betting. Now, you having your Middlle pretty close to zero as it is, you ,most certainly can tell a difference. For me, I always had all 3 eqs in the middle. That being said, when I engaged the Tone Shift, there wasnt such a noticeable difference that stuck out, not even close to yours. So, in referring to my Manual...............Ok, where did I put it if not inside the amp? Anyway, after I downloaded another from Marshall Support, and then setting the mid to zero, thats when I could hear the change. Both of these models are good amps.

So i noted for everyone, i'm getting a DSL 40C (cr too expensive yet):
    - Speaker
    > Celestion G12H-30 (16 ohm i guess)
    - Amp Tubes
    > valve 1: "57 or 58 telefunken ecc83", i guess that 57/58 references the Fender 57 amp, which means the tube is a telefunken "12ax7" ECC83-TK
    > valve 2: "LPS Sovtek", which i guess are the SOVTEK 12AX7LPS ecc83
    - Rest was stock when the other video was recorded.
    - I guess it was fine enough & didn't change with the rest of changes.
The rest of the valves were then changed to ELECTRO HARMONIX 6CA7 to "open the mids".

Thank you! In this video I have the channel volume wide open and the master just under 1. I would consider that bedroom level, but I play pretty loud and have no one to tell me it's too loud or not, so I don't know if it would be too much for an apartment or a cohabitation setting. It sounds OK at lower volumes, but really opens up and gives you the goods when you start getting it up around halfway which is where I usually play at.

I just got one of these Amps used….and after putting it to all your settings, mine sounds quite plain. First thing I’m going to do is order all new tubes, should I remove the V-type speaking and get a G12h30 speaker to replace it to get me the rest of the way?

    • @zeusdogstudios2740
      @zeusdogstudios2740  2 роки тому

While I'm not a fan of the V-type speaker, it is useable and should sound decent. Your amp may be sounding a bit anemic due to it being new. I'd suggest giving it a little time to break in before replacing it as the sound will loosen up a bit with time. If it were me, I'd look for a 212 cab with g12h30s if that's the sound you want. They're only a 30 Watt speaker and may fry in that amp. Would also sound different as it's an open back vs a closed cab.

Don't get the black diamond Telefunken!!! They don't sound even close to the old vintage Telefunken ecc83s. The tube I'm using is from 1957/58. They're getting kind of rare and pricey. You can find old 1970's ecc83s considerably cheaper and will get you the sound you want. Black diamond series will not!!!

I bought one of these last month too. Killer amp. The only complaint I have is that reverb. Studio quality the instructions say...sure. Really surprised they included it in lieu of something else, like maybe an actual reverb pan. Idk. Other than that, couldn't be happier. So, how does this sound running through another cab? Hard to tell from a video. Kudos.

Why can't any of these manufacturers just omit their half-assed reverb circuits? It would save a buck or two and simplify the control layout. We don't want digital reverb built into the amp. Just leave out ALL effects and make sure it has a decent loop from the factory. They're all so out of touch with actual players its pathetic.

I just picked up this amp last month and love it. Previously I had a non-marshall amp that I tried to make brown with BSIB pedals, but at first note this thing was so much better with no pedals.
You mentioned a Telefunken 12ax7-I see Black Diamonds out there for about $50, but vintage ones are $3-400. Can you comment on specific version?

Lol, don't know about spot on playing, but thank you!
The Telefunken ecc83 I'm using in the amp is dated to 1957/58. It's old. I've looked into the black diamonds but they don't sound the same. They have more/different mids to them
which is the opposite of what you want for this tone. It's a lot more scooped than it seems.

I'll always recommend a Marshall over pretty much anything, but that's just my personal taste. I owned and played an EVH 5150 III for 10 years and fought with it the whole time trying to get it to sound more like a Marshall. They just have a different type of gain and feel. I finally figured out that there's no point playing an amp that wants to be a Marshall when you can just play the real thing.
But at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal taste.

Well, I never said that plexis aren't an amazing amp. They definitely are. Out of the 4 I've owned, 3 '69 1959s and a 1987x, the 1987x was the only one that had that type of sound to it, but unfortunately it had some reliability issues, so it got traded fairly quickly. Yes, I've definitely had better luck getting the tone on a lowly dsl than the plexis, but it took me a lot of messing with tube/speaker/overdrive/pickups/eq settings. Not saying the plexi won't do it, just giving my own personal experience and trying to save people some money by showing them that a less expensive option can get you where you want to be. Definitely get yourself a dsl. They're great amps as well. I'd love to hear some clips of your 68 doing some Van Halen.

    • @zeusdogstudios2740

Glad you enjoyed the video Steve! Yeah, you can run both speakers at the same time. They're both 16 ohms so you just plug both into the 8 ohm outputs. It says right on the back of the amp, 1×8 or 2×16. Simple hook up. Although, I recommend for the brown sound only running the EVH cab as I find the V-type speaker isn't the best for the type of mids you're looking for, and a bit too much high end.
