This was a little harder to judge both sound really good, no clear winner for me. I think I like the Origin a little better for the overdrive stuff and the DSL for the cleaner stuff and high gain bits. Thanks for the review Johan!
Thank you for playing rhythm, sustain and feedback! Most UA-cam videos of guitar amps is a bunch of horrible noodling. If an amp sounds good for rhythm it will also sound good for leads.
Both sound great. Both look great. Origin has a vintage bite in the high mid and the dsl is more hi-fi or metal-ish.I think either is suited for ones playing style.
The DSL absolutely rips, such an underrated amp. When they stop making these, the prices will go inevitably through the ceiling like anything good by Marshall
They are fantastic amps and I prefer them to more expensive so called better amps I have owned . I have owned the DSL5CR the 40CR a mini jubilee and a JVM all at the same time and I got rid of the Mini Jubilee and the JVM and kept the DSL 5 and 40 .I also have a Marshall SL5 and I never use it because I find the DSl 5 far better I also preferred the DSL 5CR to the mini Jubilee in 5 watt mode
I find the opposite I have the DSL 40 cr and the low end is tight clear and very detailed and compressed beautifully at high volume producing and a very vocal and expressive low end . I compared to an origin 20 that I owned for a week and the low end sucked very farty and dull and to be honest the DSL 40cr sounds like ass in this video . The mic sounds like it's overloading
I thought they both sounded like "proper" Marshalls, but I preferred the DSL. One thing I noticed in the video though was that mic placement was very inconsistent. Sometimes it was right at the center of the cone, and other times it was towards the edge. That could account for some of the differences between the two.
Listen at 1:54 when Johan plays his signature riff (love it!) with the Strat through the DSL40CR. Sounds so much nicer than the Origin, you can here how crystal clear the string definition is and emphasising the Strat sparkle. The Origin is more vintage/warmer in the lower mids, but I think it would be lost in a live mix. Just my 2 cents worth. :-)
Played through both. I bought the DSL40CR. The Origin sounds much better in this video than the one I played. Interesting the DSL sounds worse in this video as well.
Actually I was surprised. I came to this thinking the dsl would bash the Origin, with both guitars. I was first surprised how good the strat was the the Origin. Of course I expected the SG to sound great pushing it harder, but I was surprised how the SG was with the dsl - more 'fizzy' - The Origin sounded more articulate and open tones. My fear was that the Origin range didn't have enough gain to give. (I write this as a player of 1959 Super lead 100s, 1986 50s and Vintage Modern 50s) but I'm now thinking it might be high gain enough to cover all styles (metal aside). I need a smaller lighter head to drag to rehearsals with a 1 or 2x12, so I might be after an Origin 20H or 50H after all.
I really like your playing man! I like the DSL a little better - the mids are just more pleasing and the breakup has the classic character of those 70s/80's tones. Origin is also nice, has a honky mid hump.
Thanks for the nice comparison between the two affordable Marshall 40+ watters. The DSL has a much more compressed modern gain compared to the open, touch sensitive Origin. I like both for the differences.
Reading through the comments is interesting... and without going into details in this clip I simply preferred the Strat through the DSL and the SG into the Origin.... Based on this video if I was looking to replace my JVM for something smaller I'd probably go for the DSL.
I would love you to compare the DSL40CR (the 2018 reissue) to the original DSL40C from 2012, I have the original combo and put a g12t-75 celestion in it, which sounds superb! Oh, and these combos really come to life when put through a good old Marshall 4x12! Great video as always!
I have the original DSL40C as well with a replacement speaker. V30 and now a Greenback for kicks. From what I've heard, no need to get the new one if you've replaced the original speaker. If someone hasn't, the speaker replacement would still be a less expensive option that would make the Original DSL40C as good or better.
@@SirVicc i had the first dsl and tgs 2018 is better. The eq works but i have repkaced the v type with a creamback 65 and retubed with tung sols and i play this probably more that the 5 others in my practics area. Out if the rooms big enough i take my jubilee. But for grab and go i like my dsl.
I prefer the Origin as the gain sounds more natural to me. I amazed that Marshall never put a reverb on it? I know the original Plexi didn't have one but for basic gigging, which is what this amp is aimed at, why not put it on. I think this is a oversight by Marshall. As much as I like the Origin from looks and sound, the lack of reverb is a deal breaker for me.
I agree. It's supposed to be like a late 60s amp with added features so a digital verb would seem logical since they give you a boost, internally jump the channels and an effects loop. I'll probably get one anyway.
Notice they always put the mike on the edge of the origin cone but in the centre of the DSL cone. I own a DSL and always mike it off centre. Sounds so smooth. I'd take the DSL any day - oh, i already did!
It's rather wild to have the bass and resonance just turned almost entirely off on the DSL40CR. I do the same tho. Is there anything you've done to get it closer to that Plexi tone with those sweet driving mid-tones the plexi is so famous for? I love my DSL40 for classic metal (Metallica) tones...but that sorta scooped mid-flat with so much bass isn't cutting it for that 70's AC/DC tone. Any advice?
The Origin might have sounded better with the V-Type speaker. Both still sounded good though I preferred the 20 watt combos more. Once again great playing Johan and Simon!
The DSL 40CR sounds so much better then the DSL 20 . I love the DSL 5 and DSL 40 but I really dislike the DSl 20 . This seems very strange to me. The 5 and the 40 are my favorite amps but I can't stand the 20 . I can't see anything in the design that would make the 20 interior sounding . Unless EL34s just don't work well in amps under 40 watts. I did not like mini jubilee either. I also think the origin 50 sounds far better then the origin 20 .. I had a mini jubilee and an origin 20 and I just did not like either and ended up selling both. My DSL 5 and 40 scratch the itch those other amps could not . But then again I love the sound of the studio vintage and studio classic and they are both 20 watt El34 amps so I can't be that .. I would love to have an origin 50 with a creamback M65 to go with my DSL40CR which has a creamback M and my various extension cabs but the origin 50 is far too loud for where I live and I do not find they sound very good untill you crank them then they sound killer and I don't like pedals so no origin 50 for me sadly. They do the Paul Kossoff Isle of Wigt 1970 thing so well but happily to DSL 40 with creamback M does it really well.
I got the DSL40CR, which I took it for the major flexibility, but I have to admit, I like more the Origin ! I'm looking for a second hand Origin 20 Head....
Yikes, the DSL40 is great, the Origin 50...You know where that extra money is going. It sure isn't wasted...if u got the dough, spend it. Otherwise the DSL is great
I have the DSL and it’s a great gigging amp. The Origin sounds better here, but I felt the single channel would be too limiting for the styles I play. The DSL loves my Strat!
I don’t really wanna knock the DSL cause it’s got some nice tones but damn that origin just sounds waaaay to good to be sold at such an affordable price. What a win!
With the DSL, the harmonic content and overtones sound more pronounced (easier to hear on the SG) which for me makes it sound more lively and rich. Both sound excellent, I prefer the voicing of the DSL to the darker Origin.
I have wondered about closing the back up on one of these like those convertible cabinets I've been seeing. I feel like a closed back and a creamback would make this thing sound close enough for me.
Great shootout !! I like them both, Origin = vintage 60-70s marshall plexi tones with emphasis on upper midrange, DSL = Jcm Marshall tones with emphasis on lower midrange. I chose the DSL bc i found a very lightly used one for $550.00 i couldnt pass up , but still gassing for the Origin. Ill wait a year and look for a 50h on the used market...the DSL has way more gain than i need , but im using both green channels, and it goes from super clean to jcm 800ish crunch on the ultra channel. It came down to the clean sound for me, being a Fender amp guy. Im using Strats and getting very good results with the DSL 40cr, im also using an OD pedal for leads and extra sustain. My dirty Rhythm is set to a light breakup that is very touch responsive and can use the guitar volume to clean it up. On the Ultra/ green ch the gain is set to 9-10 oclock, ch volume at 3 oclock. Working for me so far !!! One thing i will say, is the reverb is rather weak on the DSL, but im very happy that the footswitch allows you to engage the effects loop, in which i have a delay pedal...again, great demo guys !!!
Very close contest. Excellent demo by the way. I am a big Marshall fan. I Haven’t played either of these amps yet. I have a JVM205 combo that I love, but it’s so f’ing heavy I hate bringing it anywhere unless I know there’s gonna be a decent enough crowd (I know, ego!). Im looking for a lighter (and simpler) valve amp, and have been considering both the DSL and the Origin. From this video I would have favored the DSL, but all the comments below are for the ORIGIN, so now I’m confused again🧐🍻🤯
Kind of hard to tell for sure, but looks like the DSL is in low power mode. If so, would obviously effect tone/volume in comparison to the 50 watt Origin. Did they seem to be similar volumes at the time of recording?
Great video as always, been waiting so long to see/hear something about the DSL 40cr.👌Because of a delivery failure (of course I sent one of them back, since I only paid for one) I recently had two of them at home and actually just wanted to check how it sounds when you play over two amps at the same time, but I recognized that they sounded totally different although the settings were absolutely identical. The one (which I sent back later) sounded very thin, perfect for clean playing with single coils, you really had that great strat sound, but when I went into distortion that thin sound wasn't really good and especially when it got louder, it was actually just awful, a bit like my old fender frontman 15G. The other one hadn't had that extreme strat sound (but still sounded great of course) but all in all it had a much fuller sound and when I got into heaver distortion it was just perfect. Since I prefer distorted sounds I kept the second one, but do you (or anyone other) has an idea why they sounded such differently? Sorry if my English isn't totally correct😅 Greetings Johannes
I like more the sound of Origin 50. Origin has a cheaper speaker right? But it sounds amazing. I was thinking to get v30 but now when i heard this i wish to have a cabinet with Origin spikers in it.
I don’t know who set the EQ for the DSL, but mine sounds MUCH better than this video example. I tried the Origin, but it lacked the gain stage the DSL has. The Origin works well with pedals though

This was a little harder to judge both sound really good, no clear winner for me. I think I like the Origin a little better for the overdrive stuff and the DSL for the cleaner stuff and high gain bits. Thanks for the review Johan!
You can hear the headroom on the Origin. Also the sound is less "engineered", which is the way that older amps were like.
Thank you for playing rhythm, sustain and feedback! Most UA-cam videos of guitar amps is a bunch of horrible noodling. If an amp sounds good for rhythm it will also sound good for leads.
Both sound good.....but I’ll take the Origin every time ! More open....more organic !
Thanks Steve! :-)
only if you can crank it. ive had both. imo the dsl is much better for all volume levels
Wow. Johan Jimi Hendrix in the flesh. Just awesome both you guys sound great
Thanks Robbie! :-)
Really liked the origin 50, great separation of notes.
Origin really sounds like it could nail that Sabbath kind of tone. It's just asking for C# tuning and cranking it.
the dsl craps out in the low end, but the origin stays agressive and clear
Not my DSL40CR.... it’s solid through and through. Mine sounds WAY better than this set up
I find the opposite I have the DSL 40 cr and the low end is tight clear and very detailed and compressed beautifully at high volume producing and a very vocal and expressive low end . I compared to an origin 20 that I owned for a week and the low end sucked very farty and dull and to be honest the DSL 40cr sounds like ass in this video . The mic sounds like it's overloading
wow . . .what a surprise !
I preferred the DSL on most of the clips.
I did not expect that !
You guys always Rock! You are making me a believer in the Origin. Both sound great, but the Origin gets the edge for me. God bless brother!
Thanks my friend!
I thought they both sounded like "proper" Marshalls, but I preferred the DSL. One thing I noticed in the video though was that mic placement was very inconsistent. Sometimes it was right at the center of the cone, and other times it was towards the edge. That could account for some of the differences between the two.
The mic placement is different because the Origin speaker is offset. The DSL speaker is on center.
@@ratedepth 👍
The DSL40 sounds warmer to me, I prefer that to the Origin’s biting treble.
Humbs sound really nice on the 50C, while the 40CR is a bit pushy. The Strat might sound a bit better on the 40CR. I love this review!
The Origin by FAR. DSL is not too bad either, but Origin is world class!
you guys doing best amp demos on youtube
Classic example of old school and new school Marshall sound. Both are good !
I have the dsl, recently saw an origin on the used market with a flight case. After watching this video, I’m tempted to sell mine and buy the origin.
Damn that Origin sounds good, and definitely more affordable for the average enthusiast
Based on this video if I was looking to replace my JVM for something smaller I'd probably go for the DSL.
favorite guitar tones channel,seriously!
Yeah, I'd be interested in that comparison too!!
I had a dsl40c with c19 mod and creamback. I also bought a Dsl40cr. Honestly no comparison the CR is a totally different amp. 100 times better.
Interesting! How did you find it better? I own a 40c, but would love to hear how you find the cr improved. Thanks!
6:29 beautiful tone.
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Amazing my friend, as usual! Cheers Jorge
Cheers my friend!
@@deanallen927 I did get a combo in the end. Very good gigging amp and sounds great cranked.
@@rgbplumbinghilton Cool, man! I opted for a Mojotone British Lite 2x12 cab and a VTH D-50. Cheers on getting the Marshall.
@@deanallen927 good choice, I also bought a Blug amp1 as a fly rig. It is all I use now through a 2 x12 v30 cab 👍
Thanks Jeff!
@@JohanSegeborn, you're welcome!
Otherwise the DSL is great
It will definitely be my next amp. I love my vintage Bandmaster, but there's just nothing like classic Marshall growl. The origin seems a godsend.
Both great amps with the 40CR having more gain on tap and the Origin a little more vintage.
Those tar back pickups sound fantastic. They were the stock pickups for Sg standards from 1973 to 1984 .
I was contemplating between these two. Now that I've watched this video. Still.Cant.Decide.
I have the DSL and it’s a great gigging amp. The Origin sounds better here, but I felt the single channel would be too limiting for the styles I play. The DSL loves my Strat!
Im hearing more breakup on the DSL more clarity on the Origin.
I'm loving these Dsl vs. Origin shootouts ! We need Noah with his LP jr. !!! Thanks Johan ! 👍😊
Thanks Mitchell! You’re right about Noah! Cheers
El34s on the Origin sound superb!
Great playing as always
I don’t really wanna knock the DSL cause it’s got some nice tones but damn that origin just sounds waaaay to good to be sold at such an affordable price. What a win!
For these two, i would go for the Origin 50c. Great video once again :)
Thanks!
Im going to buy the dsl...sounds great to me, got strats and les pauls..works greatfor both, and quite affordable
With the DSL, the harmonic content and overtones sound more pronounced (easier to hear on the SG) which for me makes it sound more lively and rich. Both sound excellent, I prefer the voicing of the DSL to the darker Origin.
Yes. The origin is more vintage I guess, but the dsl reminds me more of the jimi spectrum , with it's more complex tones.
I have wondered about closing the back up on one of these like those convertible cabinets I've been seeing. I feel like a closed back and a creamback would make this thing sound close enough for me.
apples to oranges - both sound pretty freekin' good! (Origin a tiny bit thinner/brighter at times, but still very good to my ears).
The DSL definitely has more bottom end. Damn it. I like them both.
Great playing; great demo. Have the DSL40C, love it~
Very close contest.
After I heard the Strat/Origin Combo at 3:02, that was the deciding point. Origin gets my vote!
Glad to hear it! :-)
Very good comparison! 🙌
Origin more vintage, DSL more metal. But Johan can make any setup sound amazing
Origin and SG all the way!!!!!!
Kind of hard to tell for sure, but looks like the DSL is in low power mode. If so, would obviously effect tone/volume in comparison to the 50 watt Origin. Did they seem to be similar volumes at the time of recording?
I can’t tell the difference.
I prefer the knobs in front instead of on top (that’s just me). One of the best sounding Strats I’ve ever heard.
Sorry if my English isn't totally correct😅
Greetings Johannes
Hi! That’s really interesting. One would expect them to be more consistent. Cheers Johan
