Music gear reviews and general screwing around
Positive Grid Spark 40 Oh! Pretty Woman VH cover
Did something a little different this time by recording through the speakers with a cheap MXL 990 condenser mic. I did have to use a low cut in Studio One. I'm using the same Caline Eq pedal in front of the amp with no extra eq in post. This is mostly the same setup as my last video, but with less reverb, a slapback delay, and added chorus.

I hate talking videos. Swore I'd never do one, but here it is. Hope it helps people out. Correction: Bridge on the Harley Benton is actually a Gotoh VS100n bridge.
Marshall DSL40CR/EVH 212 CAB/BROWN SOUND

Brown sound demo / not my best playing
How does this affect the clean channel? I have a DSL 40 cr that I’d love to do this to but I also need a clean channel , for type of music I do Thanks
@@jamesalllan7806 Couldn't tell you. I only use the one channel and clean up with my volume control.
Thanks for posting this amazing sound you’ve got it nailed. Are you also playing through the stock speaker in the DSL along with the 212 cab?
@jamesalllan7806 Thanks man! Running out of the 212 only.
But back in the day Eddie used marshall plexi amps and had then cranked up loud to to the OVERDRIVE
DSL MARSHALL sounds better than the evh 5150 111
Love this video! Thank you for sharing! Could one get the same tone with your setup but instead of the DSL40CR use a DSL50 or DSL100H or DSL100HR? And would a similar guitar with the same mods but with a double locking floyd rose tremelo system instead also get this tone?
Sounds like a little too much gain to me. Great sound though.
Thank man. Have to say that I agree with too much gain. I've since started using less gain and switched to lower output pickups.
@@zeusdogstudios2740 Actually same, you gotta fight it a bit more to get the sound, but the dynamics are so much better with a little less gain.
NOS TUBES !! fuck yeah
0:43 this sounds heavenly, what song is it?
Dance the night away.
Thanks for this! I bought a dsl 40c and just couldn’t get along with it. After watching your video I bought some NOS Telefunkens and swapped the stock speaker out and bam! There it was. Sounds a lot closer to my older Marshalls. I’m glad I didn’t give up on the amp and get rid of it. 🤘
Glad to hear that! They really are amazing amps with the right tubes and speakers. Try a TC spark mini in front of it too. Adds just a little more weight to the tone and a nice sparkle on the top end.
ugh, stick that Sovtek LPS in the phase inverter, also that came with a Chinese V-Type speaker...blah lifeless, I got the limited edition with the UK Marshall Vintage in it.
I'm entirely aware that the Lps is a phase inverter tube, but sounds great where it is, plus it's cheap to replace for when it frys from being in position 2. Tried a dozen different tubes in that position. That one sounded the best and has been there for three years with no problems and heavy use. Good for you with the limited edition. Mine unfortunately came with the V-type which I agree with you on. That's specifically why I only play it through the EVH cab.
If he wasnt playing VH riffs who would be saying “oh you nails the brown sound? “
I have a DSL40C I run through a white 2017 Special Anniversary EVH 2x12. Sounds great.
Very well done. Where did you get the backing track?
Thanks! Backing track came straight off UA-cam.
it would be good to know if your celestion g12h30 speakers are made in china or made in england
Really good Mr Zues
Great amp and playing
How close is the sound if you’re not using the 2x12 cab?
Eddie modified his plexis bigtime. He did all kinds of things with the tubes.
Fair Warning album poster. The best VH album ever.
Pretty cool but I’m gonna say those speakers have a lot more to do with your sound then anything, your hooked into an evh cab , the dsl 40 speaker is more like a blues speaker or something it don’t have the aggressive sound capabilities
Wow, Cant wait for your "Next New Album" to come out"
I throw Sovtek tubes in the trash. Harsh and brittle. Metalheads like them, though.
👍
I got a BOSS 100/W Artist (worth every penny) gets this sound & many others almost effortlessly !
Yup. Had one myself. Sent it back a week later.
Should of just bought the right amp/ Too much maintenance $$ IMO
Here's the perfect setting for the DSL40 recommended by Joe Bonamassa ua-cam.com/video/PAlFyTyBl1I/v-deo.html
NICE ! I am sure those speakers are a lot too do with it !
Could you still get the brown sound with just the stock amp and no cabinet?
show us your hand...i bet you are muscular like Ed's hand.😍🙌🙌🙌🙌
Killer sound brother. Great job on the riffs. Being a 59 year old guitar player. I know that tone well. Cruise the high schools cranking it up with your powered EQ stereo system through your 6x9 in your 69 z28 comaro or any classic car was the sh@# if you had it. Those were the days.🥲
Wowwww... I've owned a DSL40 CR for seven years and I never knew you could get so close to EVH with this amp! Thats amazing!!!
How much $$ was spent on tubes, speakers, pickups ect. ect. ?
Great playin!

Are you going into both speakers(Marshall and evh), or just the evh cab?
The Marshall is not too heavy for the evh cab right?
Calm down Eddie van spaghetti 😊
Do you know what your power tubes are biased at?
You don’t say where the Master is set????
I have watched this post 100 times - you got the tone nailed…. EVH had many but this is the one I love the best
I thought Eddie just cranked a plexi and used a variac to get the Brown sound. Did he have to do other mods similar to what you did here?
put NOS tubes or change cabs is not "mods"
Perfect! Is that straight through the amp or with pedals? Which channel?
Thanks so much for posting this video. in case this helps anyone trying to recreate this: I came really close to recreating this sound with the same Marshall amp and same EVH speaker but without changing the tubes. I used a modeler for the pedals. At first it sounded absolutely awful. I figured out that if I reduce the level coming from my guitar in the input block of modeler, suddenly the sound improves drastically. If you try this and use real pedals, consider buying a pedal that pads the input signal from your guitar. That should accomplish the same thing. Before I reduced the input level it sounded better with low output pickups but after reducing the input level it sounds great with high output pickups. By the way, the EVH speaker is bulky and heavy but sounds great once you figure out how to set everything up correctly.
Too mutch talk... I gave up near the half of the vídeo ..👎
What speaker would you replace with the original speaker - if you didn’t have the 2x12 EVH cab
Skumback m75 PVC. Sounds amazingly close to a greenback, and will handle the wattage.
Wow, this is awesome. Thank you for the detailed tone notes! Teach a man to fish...
So....this is sick! Even without the pedals this sounds awesome. Hey do you have a classic AC/DC sound setup/EQ that is pretty dialed in that you could share?
You think I can get my dsl 401 to sound like that by following the same path?
Outstanding! Ben Funk has a video that shows just how stunning this amp can sound, as well. I believe it's called "80's tone with a DSL40". But, I digress.... This is the best amp for the money. I just wish it's clean is as good as the 100w.
Truly outstanding vid. The DSL40CR is an incredible little amp. Lots of tones to unlock. Thanks for shining a light on how you got yours!
