Ronnie Wood and Alice Cooper on The Who 'My Generation'

- Опубліковано 12 сер 2013
- Ronnie Wood and Alice Cooper discuss the influence of The Who, with Alice suggesting 'My Generation' was the first Metal song ever recorded. The two compare 'My Generation' with Donnie Elbert's 'Little Piece Of Leather', both of which came out in 1965, with The Who's track sounding like nothing before it.
Ronnie reminisces about the first time he saw Pete Townsend, Keith Moon and the band perform live in West London, with the speaker stacks swaying dangerously, cymbals being thrown into the crowd, and knuckles bleeding from excessive guitar thrashing!
Alice also describes an unfortunate on-stage accident of his own involving a sword through his knee!
This clip is taken from The Ronnie Wood Show, an award-winning TV series first broadcast on Sky Arts. Every episode features top artists joining Ronnie for impromptu jamming, lively chat and reminiscing about the wild days of rock'n'roll.
Episode 1, Clip 5.
THE WHO, broke down all barriers when they came on the scene, nasty, ugly, loud, funny, there sound was harsh but yet beautiful. There only mission was to rock your socks off, the most electrifying band live, I salute THE WHO FOR THERE UNIQUE SOUND.
best band in the world bar none.
best live band. I agree. the sound, the show, the music, just fills you up.
The Who broke a lot of things: Rules.....stages.....guitars......drums.......amps.......hotel rooms......eardrums......
Townshend is the man! The Who is the band! And these guys know it. Confirmed by Ronnie and Alice right here folks.
Townshend has acknowledged that he was a huge Kinks fan. "You Really Got Me" was recorded more than a year before "My Generation."
Joseph Scott yeah I know, I read his book twice. It's really good. Probably the most interesting out of all rockstar autobiographies. Or I'm just a super biased Who fan lol
Mikey Likesit The Jon Savage book on the Kinks does a great job of going through everything chronologically and comparing what the Kinks were doing to what other top bands were doing, respecting everybody -- it's one of the great rock books. Another underrated book by someone who loved the Who and the Kinks and had the history straight in his mind is _The British Invasion_ by Nicholas Schaffner.
Iron Mike Me too, Iron Mike. I have loved The Who since I was 14 (1974). I didn't know then that my love and admiration for that band would only grow and grow....and grow! The Who is Love and I Love The Who! Long Live The Who!
Wow, I didn't expect Alice Cooper to be like this. He seems so nice and humble!
Oh, he always is. Very down-to-earth gentleman...
He appeared on Man VS Food once ^^
He also does radio. Anytime I hear him talk I think "wow Alice Cooper seems like a cool mofo."
To quote Wayne Campbell, "Does this guy know how to party, or what?"
By this time he stopped drinking and smoking and became a Christian
I dig Ronnie and Alice talking bout The Who
Love It To Death!
I've heard Alice talk about The Who's Keith Moon with utter respect for his drumming (says he was "the best drummer ever") a few times before. And I love it that when he shares KM stories, he is just so happy to do so; as if he's sharing stories of a beloved family member. Pretty sweet. Me, I just love it when I hear their peers speak about The Who with respect and admiration. I think The Who truly deserve those accolades. Thanks Guys!
So Great to listen to these guys chat, Don't get guys like this everyday, could listen to them for hours man
+karl clarke war stories from real rock stars.
Just makes ya want to hear from Lemmy. There is a video out somewhere.....fantastic!
I could listen to Ron Wood for literally minutes.
the who's 'my generation' was the 1st punk rock and heavy metal song!.
Angelo Catapang yeah true, but i think more Punk then metal tho
that was in Seattle where Townsend put the wonder bar through his hand. My buddy was just talking about that the other day. He was there and seen that.
Ronnie Wood seems like a super cool person. Not at all uppity.
+broomsterm
Sort of like Nancy Pelosi.
Thats why his wife left him!
Niall44 Do you know either one of them?
two Rock dogs in one room telling great stories this is awesome
These guys are so casual and cool it's hilarious
The Who are the greatest rock band ever.
One of 'em anyway.
As a live act, I only think Zeppelin came near.
@@christopher9152 I never did get into Zeppelin. I remember as a teenager around the mid-70’s being completely perplexed by how many school mates were crazy for Led Zeppelin. I didn’t understand it then and I still don’t get it; nor do I care to think about it. Me, I was a fan of The Who from the start....and that only grew through the years. I liked other music too but Everything and Everyone were so far behind The Who....they’ve always been my Clear And Totally Favorite Band!
@@catherinefitzpatrick9144 Wow, I feel the exact same way. 5 years after hearing them, they are still my favorite band of all time despite all the other music I love. I also never got into Zeppelin, and believe I have earnestly tried. I never liked the Beatles, till I gave them a 3rd chance and finally something clicked; now they’re in my top 5 of all time. I’ve hoped for the same thing to happen with Zeppelin but to no effect. I wish I could get it, because they have so much “great” material, I’d love to get that feeling everyone else gets for the first time listening to them.
I was listening to "Doctor Doctor" by the Who and I was playing along with it on my 1968 Gibson Sg Standard. It was loud so I got carried away. I poked the headstock of the SG into my Vox ac30 amp and it split the headstock. I lost my temper and obliterated the SG by repeatedly smashing it off the Vox. I was left with a pile of splinters and an am with a hole in the cloth and the speaker ripped. Thate the Who for you.....Incredible....but so were these guys. You have real legends here and their names are etched into the foundations of rock music.....How many "stars" do that nowadays? None, straight off X Factor, a couple of records, forgotten within 6 months....next....repeat for ever.....
Hi Ronnie, you got to share some stories about John Entwistle with us!
Ronnie, love your show and I know that you must have some good Moonie stories as well!
That was cool! I will come back to check out more.
omg. they both are adorable.
this is great!!!! thank you!!!!!
Where can we listen/see this whole episode? Alice and Ronnie what a great combo!
LOL Ron "Main Artery Blues"
That's actually a great title :-)
Billy Shears
LOL!
That these two men are alive to talk about the insanity of youth is proof of the human spirit.....
That one made me laugh too; along with Alice's image of the sword waving in the breeze; great stuff!
Greg Vinson 7
Main Artery Blues!! Now there's a song that needs to be written.
Love It !
Two of my Fave Guys :)
Musically, about 5 or 6 key changes, bass guitar solo, crazy drums like Moon is about to smash the whole studio up, stuttering in the lyrics inspired by the pill popping mods who followed them (according to Daltrey in an interview). And a big FU to the establishment. In 1965, when bands all had matching suits, played safe 3 chord songs about love, manufactured like it is now. So all pretty revolutionary for its time. My Generation was Punk played by guys who could actually play their instruments long before anyone else.
Hello from Lima Peru in Lima Peru in South America 👋 I wanna be a The Rolling Stone...too
HANDS DOWN BEST INTERVIEWER YAAA RONNIE
I saw them Pacific Coliseum 1980.
People call the heavy 60s bands "garage rock" now, because the recording technique and amplification weren't yet so advanced (and neither the playing, in many cases). Listen to how The Who sounded by the time they did Live At Leeds and Who's Next. I often love the ragged, dynamic guitar sound of the early 60s though, when played with the right attitude.
The first PUNK record ! Alice.
Growing up, I was always the Led Zeppelin guy and my buddy was The Who. Now that I'm older, The Who were far more original.
Btw Ronnie handles an Everly Brothers Gibson guitar
Old vets who survived, overcoming their vices, yakking about the old days. Enjoyable.
god what a fuken history about a born in ever metal song recored
does anyone know anything about ron wood's head injury?
ron wood has a show?
luv ronnie
How long has Ron Wood been wood?
interesting what you say these two great musicians
Clearly something very cheerful after a snake once so
Which song came out first? My Generation, by the Who, or Kick out the Jams by the MC5? Both pioneers of what became metal. Kind of punkish too. Then you throw Iggy Pop into the mix. Either way, these guys did it long before the Sex Pistols, Ozzy, and Kiss.
+kkelleybass My Generation came out in 65. Kick Out the Jams was performed in 68(?) and released in 69.
+kkelleybass Are you kidding? The MC5 was still a wet dream when My Generation was released!
asi se ve!
pete one bets guit of the world;
"Main artery Blues". Haaahaaaaa...I can't stop laughing!
Add the music ! :)
ive heard that my generation is first punk rock song
Alice Cooper could sub for Nimoy on the next few Trek movies.
No The Who, Metal, or Punk without Link Wray first.
The first metal song? Behave. They say a similar thing about The Kinks that "You really got me" was the first punk tune. Nonsense. It was a garage sound. The 60's produced some great acts both sides of the Atlantic and further. No coincidence that most of these folk having been born at the end of WWII. What else were the going to do. Write ballads?
Get back on the golf course Alice - you were never even third rate!
wtf-------------who the f are you. must be Obama fan
Harsh and I don’t agree at all! Anyway, Stewart, what have you done in your lifetime? I’m thinking it’s nothing close to what Alice Cooper’s accomplished.
@@catherinefitzpatrick9144 I played drums with Chuck Berry, the 4Tops, The Temptations. I toured Europe with my own band and I made the above comment 6 years ago! You had to grow up with the Beatles, Stones, The Who, Small Faces, Free, Joe Cocker etc etcetc to see that Alice Cooper just cashed in on the theatrical side of music. Best thing was School's Out!!!
oh Alice...not even close to first metal song. Black Sabbath is the very first. Not Iron Butterfly or any of the other names bandided around. It's Sabbath end of story.
+zigzagbigbag Yeah, guess Alice is getting a little senile by this time, although I think his heart is in the right place. Your right, My Generation by The Who was definitely not Metal but it was certainly the song that kicked off the punk movement both lyrically and in live performance.....and I think that Zeppelin had something to do with creating metal just as much as Sabbath did, but that's just my opinion
+D DIGM I dont think any one act start a genre buy My Gen certainly heavily influenced metal as did early Kinks riffs.
that was way before Black Sabbath you obviously don't know your timelines
Iommi's contribution can a llittle bit later. He had played with Tull for a while (Rock-n- Roll Circus video), and then came back grabbed Geezer and Bill and Ozzy and said- we have to rehearse for real and get good.
Thankfully Sabbath reached a lot of audience and influenced millions of guitarists... (their first 8 albums still- reach me in ways most bands do not); but I would imagine that Pete Townsend and the Who were a major influence on Tony Iommi-with their aggression and musicianship.
what a poor soul u have
So Pete Townshend is known not for his guitar skills but because of the gimmicks?
If you ever listened to The Who then you would know what Pete Townshend is known for.
Cooper was asked: "Who is the biggest celebrity golf cheat?"
Alice Cooper is right wing but, his answer: 'Donald Trump" 5 years ago,
Maybe Trump doesn't cheat anymore.
dumb as shit,,,,teaching my kids about evil of Obama
Dumb as shit?
I'M teaching my kids about THE evil of Obama.
