Keith calls room service a couple of times but nobody brings up the Gin. So Keith vanishes and comes back with a bottle of Gin. Graham asked him where he went. Moon will never win any awards for technicality and was not schooled or refined in any way behind the drums. So, many of the drum guru's out there will deride him as a sloppy, lazy performer. But there was NO ONE in rock before or after that sat behind a kit and generated the kind of explosive, frenetic wall of sound that Moon created. Roger Daltrey said the first time he heard him play, it was like a jet engine taking off. They controlled him somewhat in the studio but like Hendrix, you had to see him live to appreciate his genius.
Absolutley Dana. Everytime I listen to I Can See For Miles Keith's drumming sends chills up my spine. The drums were the center of the piece. The rest of the band just filled in.
Before joining The Who Kieth was in The Beachcomders & one night Keith hit his drums so hard they broke through the stage floor. After that Kieth had to tie his drums to something to keep it from happening again.
Well, since all of these opnions on who is the best drummer is purely subjective, here's my pick. Having heard live performances of most all the groups with the "Best-Drummer Ever" over my years. My opinion based on pure musicality, sense of rhythm, complimentary content, and overall best entertained by is Ginger Baker. For me, moon was fun to watch but is far down on my list as far great rock drummers go. And I saw plenty of him at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit.

Circa 1970 I just bought Tommy. My mother, who was from the silent generation, who had grown up on Sinatra and Dorsey, asked to hear some of the album. I played the Underture for her. She listened quietly. When it was done, her only reply was, "That was some really good drumming. I really enjoyed that." I didn't know enough yet, to understand just how good Keith Moon was, but she, who never listened to a rock song before, noted how good the drummer was. I guess that says something.
When Kieth came to Melbourne he got on a local bus and ordered the bus driver to take them to Brazil! The story was molly Meldrum found him and got him back to the Motel where he swang from a chandler pretending to be a pirate.
He had a drinking problem. A dr. prescribed him pills that would make him feel drunk so he wouldn't drink. He was invited to a party thrown by Paul McCartney when he was with Wings in Hollywood. He was so afraid that he would drink while there; and, did. That was the night he died. At the autopsy, they found 19 of those pills in his stomach!
@@phlushphish793 That happened in London after attending a party thrown by McCartney in honor of Buddy Holly. I believe he died in the same flat where Mama Cass Elliot had died.
In almost all rock bands the drummer is kind of a supporting player. The film Spinal Tape with its serial drummers even made a joke about it. But Moon was just as much a Who core member as Townsend, Entwistle and Daltry. And his drum patterns mirror the music beyond the typical mere keeping of the beat.
All the best rock bands in history, wouldn’t be squat without the drummer. Integral member of the groups. Beatles, Nirvana, The Who, zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix Experience, Black Sabbath etc etc
I can listen to this all day! Keith has done everything I would love to the do if I had the money. This era you will end up in prison but a guy can dream!

Neil Peart talked about his influences on his "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" DVD. At one point he divided his favourite drummers in those who recorded solos, and those who put all of their tricks and abilities directly in the songs. First he dropped a few names of solo-recording drummers. Then he started with "There were also drummers like Keith Moon. ... actually, there were no drummers like Keith Moon!" ua-cam.com/video/Uu46KZRp9co/v-deo.html
John Bonham is the THE greatest rock drummer of all time. Nobody else had the unique combination of Sound, Groove, technical ability, dynamics, power and sensibility. He knew when to get on top and when to lay back. His drumming was more about feel than perfection. He had that incredible right foot and don't forget about his hi-hat work and those sick fills, that are often never mentioned (overlooked). He remains the All Around perfect drummer for rock. He could have played in a Funk band or a Metal band just the same. He was extraordinary
It's so interesting how some of these stars are normal people, who are just putting on a role for their crazy rock persona, while others actually are that strange.
Roger Daltrey said that it was a brand new Lincoln Continental. They had a hell of a time getting it out of the pool because it was on the third floor! Holiday Inn used to put The Who in old rooms that needed renevating to cut down on hotel costs. And they still charged them $16K and got the room done for free.
So tired of hearing about the greatness of john bonham. He was , for the most part very pedestrian, listless, and basically a pounder. Moon was emphatic, innovative , articulate, creative, and one of a kind! Bonham couldn't hold a candle to moonie!

I think the person that came closest was Mike Myers. That was a least 5 to 10 years ago. I am pretty Roget Daltry was trying to produce it
This might just be the best video on all of UA-cam.
Love this man!!!-my mother swore she went to school with him back n the day in AZ...her mom was a devout pentecostal,my mom's rebellion shining through!!lol!
Man Alice COoper is one of a kind, what a great storytellers, something about people like him and Elvis man...theres a certain air to them
Moon will never win any awards for technicality and was not schooled or refined in any way behind the drums. They controlled him somewhat in the studio but like Hendrix, you had to see him live to appreciate his genius.
very well put i very much agree moon was genious
Absolutley Dana. Everytime I listen to I Can See For Miles Keith's drumming sends chills up my spine. The drums were the center of the piece. The rest of the band just filled in.
Before joining The Who Kieth was in The Beachcomders & one night Keith hit his drums so hard they broke through the stage floor. After that Kieth had to tie his drums to something to keep it from happening again.
Dana James yeah that's Bullshit. Who are you is about as technical and precision driven as they come
Well, since all of these opnions on who is the best drummer is purely subjective, here's my pick.
Alice is so beautiful
Alice, is a great guy. I saw him three times. Chicago 1975, South Bend , Merrillville.
His Overlord Upon High Star Plaza Merrillville now gone and Morris Civic in S Bend great shows😎
@@flyingburritobro68 yes, also The Chicago Stadium, now gone.
His Overlord Upon High missed the one in Chicago!
I adore Alice's laugh and it's so cute how he entertains himself with each story he tells.
Alice likes people. You can just tell and his interactions with others and what that means to him
Alice is easily one of the best raconteurs and entertainers
Moon inspired me to play drums, that was 1977 after hearing The Who in 74, Odds & Sods via my Cousin Kevin 😆
RIP Mr Moon
I love the way Alice tells a story he's so entertaining to listen to I'm such a great fan of Alice Cooper recently I covered one of the Elsa songs and I'm having a bastard next weekend such a great inspiration
..he's really slowed his backswing..but like all of us age will make u up a club.. 6iron go to 5iron....I heard he's using ladies clubs....coupe you fuck don't cheat at golph....just cheat your fans their all nitwits anyways
Go inhale a fart, fading.
Circa 1970
I just bought Tommy. My mother, who was from the silent generation, who had grown up on Sinatra and Dorsey, asked to hear some of the album.
I played the Underture for her. She listened quietly.
When it was done, her only reply was, "That was some really good drumming. I really enjoyed that."
I didn't know enough yet, to understand just how good Keith Moon was, but she, who never listened to a rock song before, noted how good the drummer was.
I guess that says something.
Alice holds the secret of longevity in rock roll, aside from being a great frontman, being a decent reliable person.
Him and Clapton.
Love this story and Alice. I bow down to the master.
I could listen to Alice forever💗💗💗💗💗💗💗
*_I liked the drums beacuse of Ringo Starr BUT I became a drummer beacuse of Keith Moon_*..
I want THAT on my tombstone
That last line is so true,no-one has ever come close to Moonie`s drumming.
0:29. Moon was a TRANSFORMER before being a transformer was cool
Michael Simion There should be a movie made about him. He was an amazing man, and also Ringos son who is his god son is now drumming for the WHO.
It was once said that The Who were: a lead singer, a lead guitarist, a lead bassist and a lead drummer, all fighting for attention.
Alice reminds me a tiny bit of Michael Scott in the way he speaks here. Awesome lol
Ha! Now that I think of it, Alice and Steve Carell's voices are very similar. Now I want to hear Steve sing "No More Mister Nice Guy"!
I loved story when the hotel manager knocked on Keith's door to know what all the banging was. He stepped inside and was horrified to see that Moon had nailed all the furniture to the ceiling so everything was upside down. 😆
Great story.
Moon was the template..Period
***** aye ,Baker =precision
He said he was the best "Keith Moon style" drummer ever...it's the height of narcissism to say you are the best, even if you are! Tasteful to give props to high achievers in your instrument....🙄
It's full stop mate. Periods are for girls
Rick Wakeman tells a really good Keith Moon story in his book. It’s really funny, worth reading.
Would love to watch the long-awaited Moon-biopic ...
Daltry called Moon ,,the funniest person he had ever seen ...
He was flawed genius our moony
Wow, great to hear about him, I just loved that guy so much how great he is at drumming. I knew he was crazy, but never expected it was so much. 😂
Neil Peart talked about his influences on his "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" DVD. At one point he divided his favourite drummers in those who recorded solos, and those who put all of their tricks and abilities directly in the songs.
First he dropped a few names of solo-recording drummers. Then he started with "There were also drummers like Keith Moon. ... actually, there were no drummers like Keith Moon!"

The Holiday Inn became a Days Inn and has since been demolished.
Alice Cooper is one of the best Rock'n Roll star of all time! And such a smart guy!
You are damned right about John. He was extraordinary.
i was waiting for Alice to say " And if he was alive today, he would be using a fretlight guitar."
Awesome videos!
Gotta love Vincent Furnier. He always seems to have nice stories; he doesn't bad-mouth people.
Thaks Alice to tell us this story, thanks a lot !!!
I heard about 25 years ago, that they were going to make a movie about Keith...why hasnt this yet happened??!!?? Long overdue!!!
It's so interesting how some of these stars are normal people, who are just putting on a role for their crazy rock persona, while others actually are that strange.
Yeah Alice so tame but lovely guy
Thank you for SAYING IT!! Keith Moon was and IS the BEST GD DRUMMER EVER!!🎉
Thanks for sharing!
The last temptation rocks. And is underplayed. Side show. Some of thebest lyrics i heard great ending. Beautiful intro
Ruger got that part of the story wrong. The pool was outside. You can Google pictures of the hotel. Holiday Inn in Flint Michigan.
love hearing stories about Keith Moon, but its still sad that he died so young. 32 is no age...
So tired of hearing about the greatness of john bonham. He was , for the most part very pedestrian, listless, and basically a pounder. Moon was emphatic, innovative , articulate, creative, and one of a kind! Bonham couldn't hold a candle to moonie!
Thank you Mr Cooper Moon the Loon 🤪 As a 7 or 8 year old I loved the album cover for You can go to Hel.. I loved that song so much as a child. .A friend of my mother had to order it I still remember the day he brought it home. What a wonderful time it was too be a child..The 70s.🧸 Funny thing is when I think about it I had no concept of what He'll was..I just know you where as cool as Fu.k😎
