spitting pure facts. after ditching the funko scene and going back to my roots to pokemon, i can remember how excited i was and how much money i spent on funkos. after a few years i learned the market and my anxiety went away. unfortunately since im so new to the tcg and investing in pokemon in general. the jitters and over thinking has come back. im excited to learn and collect out of this hobby. i also would like to make some extra money on the side to maybe on day fund my dream car. thank you for the information.
Great content and spot on! I've only been at this a couple of months after a good 23 year lay off from back when I lived next door to Wizard of the Coast in WA state. But the approach you mentioned is pretty much exactly what I'm doing. Putting my "fun money" into sets to resell/trade and then buying boxes for my personal collection for long term hold and some to open with my family. I have a little bit of everything but personally enjoy Japanese the most. Thanks for the content!

Something like - “ Why most won’t succeed… the first two years no one talks about” . Honestly thought this vid was going to be about how I need to hold booster boxes long term or something super generic but this was genuinely insightful.

The one thing I don't understand about Pokemon "investing" is only valuable to you in hopes someone is interested on the product by the time it reaches a certain price point in which it may not be appealing to most.

This video was great Alex. Im about 5 years into this collecting/investing venture. I made my fair share of mistakes from years 0-3. Not to say im perfect now but definitely focused. I used to try to buy one of every product and i wore myself out. Now I collect and invest with a purpose. By time i found your channel i was relatively seasoned already but you definitely helped me hone in on the investmet side of things. I appreciate you and your content more than you know!
Really enjoyed this video, Alex. You definitely brought a lot of your TCG experience that new collectors and investors in the hobby can use to avoid mistakes and stay the course long term. I feel like I followed the exact progression you described after re-entering the hobby in 2017. I'm at a point now where I just buy a case or two of each new booster box and sometimes a case or two of PC ETBs. I made plenty of mistakes early on and got too wrapped up in keeping up with every set, but now I feel so much more confident in my positions. Even though I'm about to become a father, I absolutely still love this hobby and have no intention of stopping. I may have to liquidate some of my older sealed stuff to make room, but I have no intention of exiting completely. It's just too much fun.
I think i need to take some of my evolutions, lost thunder, burning shadows, cosmic and turn it into some surging spark... Have a bunch of hidden fates and evolving skies but feel i should hold that
@@PappaSosa hold all of it you think? I just feel if I take maybe 10-20% of each of my more appreciated sets and sell and reinvest in the sub 100 booster boxes may have better gains overall.

I started not too long ago with twilight masquerade, so far I’ve been having a blast building up my own PC (to keep) and I also invest in sets and products that I won’t touch. It’s been working for me so far but. I’m excited to keep involved with the hobby!
I just got all my 151 booster bundles from wal mart. They had em for 28.98 shipped for a while. I max ordered 12 4 days in a row. They got delayed so I got nervous that I was too good to be true. Nope! All 48 came today but not one was in a sealed case. Everyone was loose. 4 boxes with 12 in them.

I feel you missed the whole playing card game as a start position. I started that way because of my daughter, then the collecting came as part of it. I got tired spending money and my motivation is to self fund this hobby through future profits. As with everything diversification is key.
Imo, the Pokemon market is going to drop off a cliff once the $600 tax limit goes into effect in 2025 as most Pokemon consumption is powered by a small but deep pocketed population that intend to make a profit. As the risk reward becomes unpalatable due to this tax law, it will have a massive effect on the Pokemon card market. The market will eventually correct itself though. If this is implemented, supply and demand will eventually correct itself but it will take several years. I expect 2025 to have a mass oversupply, which will then lead to historic low prices. Or… there will be a lag and we won’t see that oversupply until 2026

That's all on you. That's the hardest part is balancing a strictly financial mindset and a combo or collecting, nostalgia and investment together. I own things I know are not the best investment out there but they have other benefits like display and nostalgia for me.
What about the boxes u regret selling? Like i bought evolving skies case in low 100s per box than sold them 200 each. But i wish i ve kept them. Any tips on regrets? Lol
Well I also sold ES and another reprint never came so I bought back in when they were in the 300s so I also regret selling and having to buy again higher. I also sold team up back in 2021 when it hit $700s to $750s and that still hurts too. Can't worry about it. As long as you are making the majority of the right moves and that money from the sale is going to better use in yout mind then down look back. It happens to everyone.

I think it's always worth it to start an LLC and get tax exempt status when buying things to resell. Also, you cna use many things as write offs against your pokemon gains when you sell. I don't know if there is a certain dollar amount when this should be done but definitely if you are getting more serious than just consuming or collecting.

I’ve been in the hobby now for 2.5 years and I added all my collection and sealed into the Shiny app and was shocked what it was worth now.

Try to get at least 2 each so that way when prices goes up u can sell one and keep one pretty much free or bare minimum money in it.

lol there are always outliers. 99% of the time especially will brand new release full retail is always less than ebay or tcg player
