The bird is a part of the game’s super cryptic method of achieving the best ending. You have to tame the bird by shooting your star at it, and only then will it take you on a trip to find that stage’s secret item. If you don’t collect all of the secret items you get a bad ending where you travel back home depressed, unsuccessful in saving Gimmick’s owner. Another fun fact, Red Bull produced a short UA-cam documentary about the magic of NES game soundtracks and the composer of this game was interviewed in it. He said the game’s soundtrack takes influence from all of his favorite music genres, of which there are many. The sheer variety of this game’s soundtrack is just one of the many reasons I adore it.
I'm curious what you are referring to. Are you talking about the star? I see 4 main forces applied to the star. An initial impulse, gravity, friction, and a reaction force (the force from bouncing off the wall or the ground). Most NES platformers have all of these implemented, but they generally just tend to avoid giving gameplay objects as much elasticity as the star is given here since it's hard to make something so unpredictable into a fun gameplay mechanic lol.
Found this game thanks to Pat The NES Punk's video years ago. After he pointed out all the little details about the engine, I knew I had to play it by any means. Def worth it, even if the good ending is insanely hard to get.
No joke: After Nick beat the boss at the end of the episode, I got an ad for the band Disturbed and was instantly greeted with "OHH WAH-AH-AH-AH" and I legitimately thought for a split-second that it was part of the episode XDDDD. The timing of that was the icing on the cake (the cake in question being this awesome episode. Or should I say s'more? Either way it was awesome).
Finally caught up. I first heard of this game on "Pat The NES Punk". Game actually looks to be a buried gem for the NES, seeing it was never released here in the state. And it was published by Sunsoft, aka the guys behind "Blaster Master", "Batman", and "Gremlins 2: The New Batch". Great episode.
Very well-made game! Released in 1992 so it was quite late in the NES lifecycle and at a point when the developers knew how to make the most of the hardware. Very nice graphics and animations as well as overall presentation :).
yo Gimmick is wicked! Cool to see you guys have fun with it. I'm really excited for the rerelease it's getting later this year. also white chocolate smores slap cheeks if you haven't tried em
"SunSoft, they made no games!" Fun fact, one of their many games was the original version of RealMyst, which wasn't as good as RealMyst Masterpiece Edition, and basically doesn't exist anymore. Also, I hope "Fucking Niiiiick murphy SEEECRETTTTS" becomes a running gag
I came to this channel cause it reviewed a specific game i was looking into.. but the 3 guys cussing like to the point where they sounded like elementary schoolers trying to be cool resulted in me asking never to be recommended the channel again on my feed.
Please use the 'Nick Murphy secret' jingle clip from now on whenever you guys find a secret in a game

The physics engine that advanced in a NES game is insane.

Nerd Talk (NT) - Nick, speaking of 'Gremlin-situation,' Sunsoft *also* made Gremlins 2 for the NES.
If ever a NES game needed a licensed official reprint other than Holy Diver, this is it.

I can't believe that Sunsoft made three games and two of them are based on the Michael Keaton Batman movie.
