Why PETA is Protesting in Animal Crossing

- PETA, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, have a bone to pick with Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Specifically, the activism group seems to really, really hate Blathers and his carefully curated museum?
The reason? Because the museum has an aquarium and a vivarium. According to PETA, catching (digital, pretend) fish and insects, then putting them in (digital, pretend) cages is cruel and simply not vegan. Blathers is cancelled.
(This despite the fact that Blathers doesn't actually WANT a bunch of creepy crawly insects in his museum, but puts them there to tolerate the player...)
This is far from the first time PETA has picked a fight with Nintendo. The animal rights group can't seem to stop harassing the company for making games featuring animals.
Pokemon Black and Blue, the parody flash game, kind of makes sense. After all, we've never really bought Professor Oak's repeated claims that no, seriously, Pokemon LOVE battling each other.
Less logical is the claim that Mario's tanooki suit is made of real tanuki fur. Is it? Really? Honestly, if you're going to go after Mario, he's perpetrated far worse crimes against animals in his long history.
It almost seems as if PETA's motivation isn't actually an attempt to stand up for oppressed animals. It ALMOST seems like their goal, instead, is to get as much attention as possible by doing weird stuff.
If this is the case, congratulations PETA, mission accomplished.
For the record, this video was written by Kotor, who tries to eat vegan whenever possible, but isn't strict about it because he hates seeing food go to waste. He agrees with some of PETA's efforts to stop animal cruelty, but with issues like this, he just doesn't understand what they're hoping to accomplish.

I donate fossils to him and get nothing in return. The fossils that are usually donated to him are worth millions of dollars, and I'm over here not even receiving a dime (or bell). I haven't even payed off my house and he's over here getting fossils that are worth millions of dollars for free. I don't expect a million bells from him but at least 5,000 bells would be nice. And even when you sell the fossils to nooks cranny you only get 100 bells🤨.

they make claims such as ''''domestication hurts animals'''' (which is their reasoning for why they kill all the animals that go to their shelters--even as far as stealing animals from families. there's a notable case where a nine year old's pet dog was stolen by PETA and then put down immediately after arriving at the shelter. also, their shelters are so bad that some states have considering labeling them slaughterhouses instead of shelters.) and such. also the idea that domestication hurts animals and that all domesticated animals should be put down is, uh, bad.
especially as there's a scientific theory going around that humans domesticated themselves. meaning, to PETA's values, humans should probably die too.
furthermore, they don't actually do that much fro conservation efforts. DISNEY does more through donations at Animal Kingdom, last I checked, than PETA does.
PETA may have started as an actual animal rights group, but these days they're more like a creepy cult than an actual organization that works for the betterment of animal rights.

since peeps are liking this comment (which means it might be popular soon), i just want to say that this comment is a joke and that i’m not trying to send hate to peta. trying to save animals is a great thing to want to do, even if their tactics of trying to do so are...questionable and maybe not actually helping animals that much. animal crossing is just a game, so i feel like people should be able to have almost complete freedom in-game, even if those things aren’t considered vegan in real life. so, if any peta supporters or members read this, then please don’t take this comment seriously. but i do have one suggestion. if you want to try to oppose things like fishing and catching insects, then i’d recommend going for a real-life example approach rather than taking on an internationally beloved game series. i feel like that would get less backlash than just basically trying to dictate how people should play a virtual video game. once again, no hate intended.
also, might be worth noting that “GO VEGAN, EMPTY THE MUSEUM AND FREE THE ANIMALS” is not the worst behavior possible (and certainly not the worst message possible) regarding the modern-day, post-new horizons animal crossing community. if you want to play the game like that, then go ahead, i’m not intentionally trying to stop you from doing so. everyone’s preferred playing style is unique, so if you want to play the game in an entirely vegan way, go for it!

Also, this might be a stretch but they are assuming that because it isn’t “vegan” we shouldn’t do it, therefore saying that we are all vegan, or should all be vegan, this is not ok, seeing as they are basically forcing their beliefs on us and saying that if it doesn’t fit with THEIR beliefs then it is not good. Another example of people doing this is discrimination towards certain religions, seeing as they are saying if you fit with our beliefs, you are not “good”

Talk about hypocrisy. To show how they are against animal abuse, they abuse an animal.
I mean, I think they went a bit far with this (and many things they do), being a video game and all. But like, if a human was storing animals in tiny cages, then getting mad at the human is helping more animals (of course only if they actually are going to change anything). I guess it's a case of the lesser of two evils.
But I do agree some of their ideas are kinda hypocritical.
I feel like the reason why Isabelle eats tofu is because Animal Crossing is a Japanese game. In Japan, people eat tofu.
Actually, putting specimens (one of each species on the island, that is) into a museum or aquarium is necessary for research and habitat maintenance, especially on such a small island with such a vast ecosystem. I have a degree in art history and studied museums. 🧐

I don't think PETA actually played the game, they say to not get clams from the sand, but when trying to help Gulliver you might accidentaly do it. Also the dog house is only a decoration, you need the museum to actually progress, when they say hermit crabs need left alone, it was just a pun, when peta says you "rip animals out of the environment" it comes with a fish tank.
And they are worried about this game more than real life

Considering veganism doesn't exist in Japan... even being vegetarian is rare. With how health-focused a lot of japanese cuisine already is, there's no real advantage to changing it. Hell, you're required by the government to get a full check-up with a doctor when you turn 30, just in case you have any signs of dangerous medical conditions.

There are no slaughter houses in Animal Crossing. Fishing, and “calming”(?) is not bad for the envoirment.
If you'd like my two cents, my guess is this: they don't have to do anything to protest within virtual spaces, aside entering them. If they actually target companies and real-world organizations, then PETA would have to deal with various laws and lawsuits each time they went to court against one company or another. Obviously, they have neither the time nor energy nor money to do that, because all of theirs is going to making another protest that they can use to vaguely "highlight cruel practices toward animals (in other companies, never mind our own)" - without actually naming who and what, specifically. Not to mention they'd likely lose a court battle if they actually had one.
And it's not _quite_ dumb enough to protest out in the open during a pandemic.
