    My favorite PBS Kids shows were
    -Cyberchase (one of the more superior PBS Kids shows in existence)
    -The Electric Company
    -Fetch
    -Arthur
    I also remember being absolutely _OBSESSED_ with all of the flash games they had on their website, like _Cyber Quest._ I even went back to check and replay a bunch of them for some good nostalgia, when I found out alot of them were GONE.
    So I acted accordingly and used the Wayback Machine, even though games like _The Wordsuckerupernator_ were gone to time...
    Also does anyone remember a show that was called something like "Chuck Vander Chuck" because I can barely find anything on it.

      On the topic of games that got wiped out, I remember there was this Wild Kratts thing where you could collect animal discs by winning the different games, and even customize your own character. I think there was even a final game where you had to defeat the villains using all the discs you had. You bet I played every single game to get all the discs and win them all. Years later I went back and that whole thing was gone, they still had some games and episodes of the show IIRC but it wasn't the same anymore

    Since you asked, I was terrified of Jay-Jay the Jet Plane as a child. The second I saw that first frame of the sun rising over the mountain, I would instantly turn the channel to something else. From the footage you showed, I think the physical models would’ve made it more watchable than the abysmal cgi but it still looks absolutely horrifying. Funnily enough, I absolutely loved Thomas The Tank Engine, which you would’ve thought I should also be scared by, but their face plates were much more grounded in reality and they had a unmistakable charm to their design that made them way more visually appealing.

    • @vixenrevitup
      @vixenrevitup 3 роки тому +23

      That’s weird because for my twin sister and me, it was the complete opposite! We were terrified of some of the expressions made by the characters of Thomas! When Thomas came on, one or both of us would run out to the kitchen and ask our mom to change the channel for us (we weren’t allowed to use the remote, only the volume buttons on the TV itself). As for Jay-Jay, my twin and I thought the characters were so morbidly ugly that it was hilarious! We never really paid attention to the plot. We just laughed at how ugly everyone was! We were odd, I guess!

    About the whole Mandela effect thing with the Berenstain Bears, I personally have a theory that it stems from how our minds can autocorrect things to how we expect them to be or how we usually see them to be. Stein is a common suffix in last names, and so, we'd unconsciously correct the -stain to -stein. This sort of stuff happens all the time, from people reading lines of words wrong (i.e dig bick memes, yes I am using that as an example) or how most people can still clearly read and comprehend things that are spelled horribly wrong.

    • @zoebee1656

    • @killerkitten7534

      I think another big part is that as kids a lot of us were read the book by our parents, and it’s possible a lot of our parents just mispronounced the name. Then we grew up assuming it was spelled the way we thought it to be pronounced.
      Or idk, maybe we’re actually in a merged parallel universe or whatever mandela effect people say

    • @PupBoxxy
      @PupBoxxy 2 роки тому +22

      Simianization was heavily present in late 30s early 40s European/American society. Being aware of that makes it difficult to view media of the time which depicts apes or monkeys, as they almost always reflect racist attitudes towards Africans during those times. Common examples include war propaganda (obviously), political satire, newspaper comics, etc. However, such a practice was used for practically any ethnic group that Americans and Europeans were hostile towards - US outlets depicted Asian people in such a way following WWII, Germans were depicted as such by the allies after WWI, and of course the practice has always been used to abuse African people. It is also almost always used to define which ethnic groups are "white" and which aren't - for example, Irish people in New York were commonly drawn as apes to denote their racial inferiority to "white" Americans, despite the fact that most people agree that Irish people are very white.
      Hence the critical view of a very popular piece of media in the 40s focused on a monkey and a man dressed in colonialist attire. A comparable way of viewing older media is seeing characters with typically anti-Semitic features in the 40s as well, or people wearing white hoods in the late 1800s in media. Of course it isn't always bigotry, whether explicit or implicit, but it often is, and that makes it important to examine through a historically critical lens.

    • @VahlTV
      @VahlTV 2 роки тому +36

      You're right about viewing things with a historically critical lens, but the idea of Curious George being in any way related to the concept of race is still a reach in my opinion. If Curious George represented a black person, he would have been a black person-keep in mind that this is the same era as "Bosko the Negro Boy" and other such goofy, commercialized portrayals of black stereotypes. The simple truth is, kids like cute animals, monkeys are cute, so someone wrote a few books about a monkey doing monkey things. The level of mental gymnastics needed to rationalize claims of racism being a present undertone in Curious George of all things is enough to win you a gold medal and then some.

    • @PupBoxxy
      @PupBoxxy 2 роки тому +16

      @@VahlTV The article from the video (and the much older one from June Cummins) are less about Curious George being racist propaganda and moreso the way that European and American societal views (as the books were published and edited in the US while the author was European) affect the books.
      This is why the article from the video draws parallels and make distinctions between the Curious George books and "Tintin in the Congo", with the latter being far more explicitly racist and orientalist.
      And yes, but no. Monkeys are cute and funny, but the 40s were a very different cultural context for monkeys in media. Especially when a large section of the books' plots are centered around George being from Africa.
      Plus, the original paper being a reach is kinda the whole point. It was a class paper from a sophomore examining the historical context of children's media. Like the only reason you or I can read it is because it got published in her university's program's journal years ago, right before it stopped getting issues put online.

    fun fact: the sad story of Henry was originally written in the books because the Rev. W. Awdry didn't like the character and wanted him written out, but the publisher refused to publish the book unless he was given a happy ending. so Awdry cooperated and wrote another story where Henry was let back out of the tunnel and Henry was eventually given his own book and backstory, and is now a fan favorite character.

    My opinions on the whole "Thomas is in an Authoritarian dystopia" idea: There are so many holes that it's blown down by the wind. As for the episode "The Sad Story of Henry", there's obviously the 4th episode that followed afterwards, they show Henry being let out of the tunnel, and even in the US dub, it was changed from the original.
    UK: "'And we will leave you here for always, and always, and always!'"
    US: "'And we will leave you here until you are ready to come out!'"
    While I find the Smudger Story fair in terms of authoritarianism, I'm pretty sure that the Narrow Gauge Railway operated separately from Sir Topham Hatt's railway at the time. Lastly, about the scrapping and various terrors occurring to steam locomotives outside of Sodor, the Railway Series has a separate timeline and separate universes. I actually recommend looking into UA-camr's The Unlucky Tugs videos on the timelines of the Railway Series timeline, the Model timeline, and the CGI timeline.

    Fun fact: Because the Teletubbies were so tall (10ft), the rabbits they used in the series were Flemish Giant rabbits! They're super sweet and are up to 2-4 ft long, as to not give away the terrifying scale of the characters. But the rabbits were very notorious for uh... doing what rabbits do on set, and filming had to be paused/reshot multiple times because of it.

    That stuff mostly happened in Thomas The Tank Engine because the author of the RWS the Reverend W. Awdry liked his storys to be realistic other than the alive vehicles and when “Stepney the Bluebell Engine” was published steam engines we’re getting replaced with diesel engines. The story of Smudger was based on the story of Stanley which was told in a story from the RWS book “Duke the Lost Engine” Awdry based what happened to Stanley on what happened to a real engine. This is just my thoughts as someone who knows a good amount about TTTE.

    • @robertcorbell1006
      @robertcorbell1006 3 роки тому +3

      The other thing is that they were Christian allegories written by a reverend for a reason and the horrible things that happened to the engines came as punishment for disobeying the commands of their boss (along the lines of Hell and God). The "useful" thing was also about finding your calling or purpose in life. C.S. Lewis and other religious authors of the time praised the author of RWS due to him being essentially the Max Lucado of his day. This is all something I remember from minoring in religious studies/comparative religion in college.

    21:00 The only issue with this theory is that it's out-of-context to when the Railways Series of books was written. It was written during the transition from Steam to Diesel traction in the UK post-Nationalization. The author of the Railways Series-Wilbert Awdry-and presumably most of his reader base was not a fan of diesel locomotives. They lacked a 'personality' so to speak. Every steam locomotive is one-of-a-kind, no two are exactly the same even if they're in the same class. The sound of a steam locomotive is unique to it, and changes as conditions change. Diesels, meanwhile, are mass-produced and largely operate and sound the same. Which was the point, they're primary selling point was efficiency and reduced maintenance costs. This is seen with Devious Diesel and the various other Diesel engines in Thomas & Friends with the exceptions of Boco and maybe Daisy (who's her own separate can of worms). So yes, Sodor was written as a safe haven for steam locomotives. But only in the context of contemporary UK at the time of their publication. Awdry was big into world-building, creating a compelling history and map for his fictional Isle of Sodor. As such, he needed to account for current events and write around them to keep primarily steam locomotive only.
    TL:DR: The scrapping of Steam Locomotives in the Railway Series of books which the TV Series Thomas & Friends is based off is only portrayed as tragic since, in the eyes of its author and readers, it was.
    Additional Thoughts: Having Draconian punishments would probably make sense also in a post-war setting. After years of chaos, people would want order and everything exactly in its place. Even if they were ultimately doing their children a disservice. Also, the line about Henry deserving his punishment was altered to be "How long will it be until Henry comes out of the tunnel?" in the US version. Lastly, no one seems to mention that the next story chronologically has Henry leave the tunnel as he's recruited to pull Gorden's train after he bursts a safety valve. Does it make up for Sir Toppam Hat/The Fat Controller saying fuck it (or in the episode "We'll leave you here in the tunnel for always, and always, and always")? Probably not, but it's something and was added at the request of the publisher. Everyone also seems to forget how beneficial the series has been to people on the autism spectrum such as myself

    There were some other PBS kids shows that I watched but hated for no reason like Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood and Thomas & Friends💀

    I always remembered it being BerenSTAIN. My explanation for the Mandela Effect: Tons of people have just been pronouncing incorrectly for so long that it has become intertwined with their memories of the franchise.

    My favorite story from Ghostwriter was "Into the Comics" and I used to check out the VHS from the library all the time around '99/2000.
    I used to think the failed artist antagonist from that video was pathetic when I was kid, then re-watching as an adult, I sympathized with him so much 😅

    I'm not really that into icebergs. But I loved PBS when I was a kid, so this was a real treat!

    I genuinely forgot how bad the CGI was in manufactured nightmare that was Jay Jay The Jetplane
    18:58 I’m a huge TTTE fan. Henry gets let out after Gordon’s safety valve bursts in the episode right after it (that being Edward, Gordon, and Henry). Smudger and Bulgy deserved their punishments after sabotaging work.
    Also, Awdry meant for the series to be realistic, showing that engines were being scrapped to add realism to the story. The TTTE fandom on Tumblr stated how far they were reaching.
    36:45 Jesus FUCK-, also I said that out loud and my fucking bedroom light dimmed, that was very coincidental

    Ok, something about PBS Kids I remember VIVIDLY, was when Elmo had a book about potty training and one of the buttons that was supposed to be used with the story said “uh oh,*laughs* who wants to die?”… Ik VERY SCARY ESPECIALLY TO BE MARKETED FOR CHILDREN!

    I loved pbs so much. Very fond memories. Now I watch it with my kids. Arthur and zaboomafoo were the best.
