- Basketball dad Mark McLaughlin absolutely destroyed an elderly referee by pushing him to the ground during an in-game scuffle. The ref suffered a broken nose, fractured ribs, and other injuries and McLaughlin has been charged with second degree assault. Rick Strom breaks it down. Give us your thoughts in the comments below!

@@awptsm There is a big difference between a ref trying to break up a fight and accidently pushing his kid to the ground, vs. someone who has no business on the court bum rushing an old ref. He could have been killed hitting his head on the court that hard. If the dad had any guts, he would have gone after the ref who accidently pushed his son to the ground.
BTW - Did anyone notice how the dad went after the white ref who did nothing, but ignored the black ref who actually pushed his son?
I like how he blindsides the ref then casually begins to walk away as if nobody noticed. What a complete coward!
The son started the brawl by elbowing the opposing player in the back. Wonder where the kid learned to do that. Bet the dad was a dirty player as well.

"No-one touches my son" then plants a 72 year old referee face first into the court, who categorically had not touched his son. Didn't have any problem with his son's behaviour though! No wonder the son is like he is and no-one wonder the dad is likely going to jail, what a terrible example.
I was at a Lake Washington Soccer Association game when a MOTHER ran onto the field with her dog and sicced the dog onto a referee. She was banned for life from attending any more games. The ref kicked the dog hard in the face in self-defense. Kids on the team were crying and my daughter stood there stunned and couldn't believe someone did such a crazy thing.
Whatever other punishments he receives, he should be permanently banned from attending any sporting events played by minors.
What is the disciplinary measure for the ref who assaulted his son? Without that then it would have been a normal on court incident

Needs to serve time and anger management classes. Son needs to be suspended from playing, if not there is a very high probability that the son respond in the same way as his father. Feel bad for the kid, but the cycle of behavior needs to be broken. No excuse for this behavior.

As a youth sports coach I can confirm a lot of the awful children these days are nothing compared to the awful parents

Then a teammate retaliates and the ref pushes his kid down trying to stop a fight?. At the end of the day this dad has anger issues and the apple did not fall far from the tree. Given that McLaughlin was a 31 year old parent with a son who was at least 13-14 years (middle school) old and maybe 15-16 years old (high school freshman/sophomore), that would mean that the idiot parent had the child when he was 15-18 years old. This clearly shows the character and irresponsibility of Mr. McLaughlin, so is anybody surprised that he still has character issues?
The fact that he plead not guilty should be grounds for the sentencing to be as harsh as possible.

He missed the true target. The ref who snatched his son up is who he was after. And I am not sure why that ref would have touched his son like that. So mis directed fire but he definitely should have let the other ref know not to put his hands on his kid like that.

If he was to take a plea deal with the DA, the judge needs to add more stipulations and should still give him a lifetime banishment of ever attending any of his children's sporting events no matter what state the event takes place in. From grade school to the professional level, from basketball to football to baseball to soccer, and on and on...

@@internetuser7156 A lifetime probation can be in forced by a local, state, or federal judge and it can be implied to any jurisdiction in the country. You can always go to another state and live your life while on probation, but if you violate a given order by a judge, anywhere in this country, you can and will be in violation of a judicial order that is punishable to jail time. And plus, look at how his son is being unsportsmanlike towards his opponents. This will be a lesson learned to the son that actions like this has consequences.

Not a coincidence that the dad’s son was the one that started it all. He committed the foul (which is semi ok, hard to tell whether he swiped at the kid’s face on purpose or not) but he then later put his shoulder into the other kid’s back which started the physical altercation.
