To fix the rolling shutter effect that appears on the screen, changing the shutter speed will help! I've found that 1/60 works great :)

Amazing to see you repair the OG one. This one was the one who started all this "slimness" and no upgradability for Apple (and all Ultrabooks later on)... But it was a beautiful one. I just remembered the envelope ad for this one (and then the ThinkPad moking it up), it was mindblowing.

I think I have to say that the ipod supports max usb 2.0 connection to a computer and the max usb 2.0 r/w speed is about 15-20 mbps so that's why it was so slow. The ipod hdd is 4200 rpm. It's way slower than that ssd.The macbook air in 2008 also had an ssd option and people recommend that if you can get it for your collection as the hdd variant is too slow for modern use.

Nice vid! At the end you mention that the flickering is an issue with your camera. Most probably, it's because the shutter speed is not set correctly. It needs to be double the framerate, so if you're shooting at 30fps, the shutter speed should be 1/60. It's called the 180 degree rule. If it comes out overexposed, i suggest you change the exposure instead of shutter speed. Hope this helps :D

Nice restoration - I have never been this early to a Hugh Jeffreys video :D (was literally 5 minutes after upload!).
I can imagine that laptop running hot if the heatsink is "optimized" in such a way, and the fan not working well at all due to design issues... Maybe going into the power settings and/or checking the CPU usage at idle should help to eliminate heat issues, as it certainly shouldn't idle in the 90s... That sort of heat/CPU load is also not good for battery life and longevity.

So true. I once bought an ‘immaculate’ PS Vita a couple of years ago, and it straight up looked like dude had spooged all over the front screen, it even smelt musty. I mean, I know within my age group the original PSP’s browser was our first access to.. questionable content 😅 but you kept the device er, ‘out of harms way’ if you get what
    I mean.
I straight up had to handle it with gloves, took it apart down to the very last component, cleaned with ISO alcohol on any electronics, deep soaked all the buttons/port doors in boiling water with anti bac solutions and scrubbed away.
Not only that but it was covered to heck in scratches, so I managed to get half my money back due to it being a mis sold item. The dude also forgot a game cart & memory card in their slots so was even cheaper after selling those off - bought some replacement parts from China, and it became a super cheap resto project. Its now genuinely ‘immaculate’, looks & feels like it was unboxed yesterday 😁

4:27 I know this video is a year old now, but you would've seen a noticeable upgrade with flash storage. The biggest impact SSDs have is exponentially faster random read/writes, which is specifically what hard drives suck at. Also, the drive on the Air isnt identical to the iPod drive, its a bit faster and has more cache.
But anyways, not like it'd really be worth the cost on something you aren't really gonna use.

Interested in the amount of thermal compound you used. My understanding is that the compound is only there to displace air which is a poor conductor and the best conduction occurs where there is no (or very little) paste between chip and cooler. Given this, I would have used less goo but I appreciate you do a lot of this work so would be interested in your view.

You can patch this device to OS X Mountain Lion and still get full graphics acceleration (there is a driver install utility for Mountain Lion).
The performance difference is pretty noticeable, especially using a fork of a recent browser like some Firefox Legacy.
UA-cam will play smoothly in 720P as long as the CPU does not overheat, and maybe even 720P60.

But the HP Mini 2133 uses a very low power VIA C7M cpu, this macbook air uses a core 2 duo, so i don't know if that fan/heatsink combo will do the job that well

I remember when my aunt got it she was all proud to show me.. I remember thinking it was the coolest looking and feeling thing ever.. then I used it for a second and was happy to slide it back over.. I think she knew lol.
It was an idea like ten years ahead of its time, still glad it was made though.
We need the 12” back with an M4 next year.. how bad I want that. My 13” feels to big. I’m really into compact.
Edit: hey even if it cost like $400 to rebuild it right, that’s a cool move. In twenty years you’ll have kids born this year pinging you offering $3,000 to buy just so they can see what it was like back then.
That’s neat. I’d never sell.. it’s just neat knowing you rebuilt and knew that well ahead of anyone else.

little late on the comment but... i've got one of these and a rectangle of the 3M heat sink pad between the bottom case and heat sink helps A LOT with the CPU/GPU temps. This does make for a very hot spot on the bottom case but mine has the nvidia GPU and idle temps near the max t-junction temps were not acceptable. If you happen to pick one of these up with the nvidia GPU and an SSD they'll run mojave with very little fuss.

You do a great job fixing this, but i think you use way too much thermal paste.
About the hard drive, besides the data transfer being the same speed changing to a msata drive, will read/write speed be noticeable at all?

When watching videos like these I just wonder how people even let their machines get damaged so badly

The flickering is not an issue with your camera. You have to sync your camera's frame-rate to that of the screen.

I would check the reallocated sector count on that hard drive. As well as how many hours of run time the drive has had. If the reallocated sector count is over 200 or some thing it is recommended you replace it.

hey, can you pls do a video on how to fix the flexgate issue on the MacBook Pro. I recently took my 2017 MacBook Pro to the apple store to get it fixed and they rejected it saying that there was damage which didnt make, "eligible for the program." I was hoping to fix this issue by replacing the wire rather than the whole display which is much more costly.

I didn't think the air was that old! I can't stand apple nowadays but 2008-2012 they made amazing machines

I understand having the port door -- lessens the chances of dust going in.
On the side note...with Apple laptops now soldering ram and storage on the motherboard, what's gonna happen after Apple will not support the device with upgraded software going forward? Is it possible to install another operating system like Linux in this case?
