At 3:49 there's no need to remove the flex cables to remove the battery. Simply warm up the screen side on low 80C setting on a heat plate for about 3 minutes, bend the flex cables over to the screen side and apply a bit of tape to hold it, pull or pry the battery, and it comes out nice and easy. And for heaven's sake, please don't inject any rubbing alcohol under the battery, while it evaporates, it can damage the sensitive AMOLED if it seeps under the screen. I do this every day at my repair shop, saves a lot of time and aggravation. ;)
No, you're not alone. I'm running a iPhone8 with iOS 11.3. Still does what I need it to do.

For a second there, I thought Apple kidnapped Hugh and is holding him hostage (because of delay in uploading this video). 😂
HAHA LOL
They can't do this because Apple doesn't have the Australian hostage adapter. It's not compatible with the American standard.
They will update the American Standard so you can use the Australia hostage adapter, but you have to get the new Australia hostage adapter @alexandregb566
I'm _totally_ not the one they held hostage instead
Wow you’re such a buzzkiller.
Glad to see phone design turning towards repairability. Battery pull tabs, modular parts, removable rear glass glue. Needs some tweaking, but we're getting there.👍🏽🖖🏽
What’s crazy is all these phone companies can use a nice clamp that sits over the battery and utilizes the other screw spots. I don’t see the need for any adhesive. Just need a nice cushion so the battery doesn’t shake around.
True, like an aluminium frame or harness that just sits in place holding the battery snuggly
That's pretty much what Sony use to do in their Xperia phones. The Xperia Z2 had a battery in plastic housing, that was held just by two philips screws and two clamps. The phone was still as slim as their newest phones
They could simply use two metal or plastic brackets held down by a couple of screws. Mind blown! ha-ha
@@TheMaychalPl Had that on a Fujitsu Lifebook U904, it's just 19mm thin, so similar to a MacBook Air, but the U904 and also the newer U938 are really modular: they have a soldered CPU (the U series were never made socketed), but RAM slot (some RAM is soldered on but they have a SODIMM slot for expansion), M.2 SSD (7mm 2.5" in the U904) and WiFi and mobile Broadband "WWAN" modules, all these parts are socketed.
They also have a very fancy Ethernet port that you pull out and then it unfolds, IMHO it shows that Apple took the easy, lazy way to simply ditch the ethernet port since the Retina MacBook Pros instead of developing such a thing.
And the battery isn't glued in with a ton of that but held by a plastic "carrier" with a few screws.
That might be dangerous tho if the battery expands. If it has no room to expand it will just burst instead which is very dangerous
This is what I love about android, the repairability, only a single screwdriver to remove all the internals. No matter how easy iPhones's displays are easily replaceable, but I'll still take the android route since android phones have less parts to work on
Exactly this.
Not only less stuff to work on, but you don't have to worry about losing BASIC functionality if you want to fix your screen..
iPhone screens are super friggin easy to replace... but what's the saying? Nothing worth it ever comes easy? I'm heavily considering abandoning the newer iPhone repairs in my shop... At least until I'm able to effectively do some chip swaps.
I get the repairability. I moved to iPhone after galaxy s8 active. The damn thing was constantly mistyping words, making up new words I had mistyped before and overall being slow and freezing constantly

Im still using near 10 years old Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5 with Android 6.0.1, you're not alone using old device.
Can't believe it's still usable today (except some apps cant no longer support older versions)
Galaxy s5 for me
Galaxy Grand prime plus ( help me ).
Still rocking a Galaxy S9 from 2018 right now. If the S24 actually had micro SD support, I'd go with that instead.
I still use a Galaxy TabPro 10.1 almost on a daily basis. If I weren't on my second custom ROM, it'd be stuck on 4.4 Kitkat right now lol
I think the strong adhesive on the battery softens out with the time. You have to remember you are removing a brand new phone, with a brand new battery. With the vapor chamber being attached to the battery too, it will transfer head along the adhesive, so I think it so minimize battery movement on the near future, and also minimize battery incidents (aka note 7)
Edit: Well, to everyone, thats why I started with "I think", thanks for the explanations and personal experiences
I don't know about that. I can't say anything about Samsung or Apple, but when I replaced the battery on my over 10 year old Kindle, the adhesive in the device was still extremely strong. I don't believe they are accounting for softening of adhesives over time when they design these things.
@@klopferatorkindle does not use battery as a heatsink. But yeah, the glue is like 300% stronger than it should be.
They don't. Thats now how it works.
Also Hugh has the build of a reddit mod. PDK and Jerry didn't have much trouble pulling out the battery.
Except, the note 7 was not because the phone could move, quite the opposite
It was too tight in there that it was squished and popped
"Samsung has lost it's distinctive edge"
Indeed it's flat now:)
I actually prefer it being flat, because of screen protectors and easier repairs
I like that they rate it for 4000mAh but the battery says 3880mAh on it lmao
+/-10%?
Oh, close enough
This seems to be a common thing, my phone, a low end oppo has a battery of supposedly 5000mAh but when it's fully charged AIDA64 says it's charge is 4880mAh
That’s because of safety.
@@djplonghead5403 I imagine charging it to it's fullest could cause battery inflation, right?
im currently repairing a galaxy A20 And Man that battery is held with serious adhesive looks like it never changes after the first Samsung model without a removeable battery.
Running android 9 here.
I think the Galaxy S8 and S9 are the best looking phones Samsung ever made, with the very thin frame at the side that curves out a bit at both ends.
They are a bit slippery to hold though without case. (and tech wise pretty much outdated, although they have USB-C, Qi charging, a good oled screen, reasonable memory, wifi 5, NFC, gyro sensor etc. Pretty good for a phone that is now almost 7 years old (the S8 that is)
Yeah honestly that's why I gave it up because the case hides all that anyways so I really didn't care. Even my S22 Ultra is basically the same as those versions with the case in
I miss my 10e. I regret switching from it. The last of the true small screen phones outside of apple, it seems :(
In general Android 9 and 10 re the best versions of Android.. Freedom
I remember the Galaxy S7! Now that was also when you could tell a Samsung and an iPhone apart! Brilliant phones.
I put Lineage on my S9 and used it for a while but had to switch back due to issues with payment apps.
It's plenty fast, much better compared to the stock rom.
It just felt much nicer/premium to hold compared to my S20 and it has a MicroSD card slot... You're right the design was great, although I get why people hated the curved glass.
The battery removal thing still a good thing, i work as a phone repair guy and once i had phone get into flames, with this new system little bit of heat + alcohol will do wonders compared to just glued back as it was before. In my eyes, its a move in good direction

no, Hugh, you are not alone! i daily drive a Google Nexus 6P since 2021. albeit lacking performance in some scenarios i found it to be plenty powerful for many other tasks, such as watching UA-cam and sending texts. you know, the usual. granted, i have some gripes about it, but its still an amazing handset on its own right. Android 8.1 still kicking in 2024!
So thankful for your videos man! I replaced my wife's screen, daughter board and front camera last year (s21) then sold it for $$$ then bought her a new phone. My daughter board recently died, so i just repkaced the daughter board for $40. Took me 15 mintues. Really happy these videos exists!
I'm still on a lightweight android 5 for my very old google nexus 7 tablet. I use it as an of e-reader and it works fine. Cost me $10
great work as always Huge
That seems just about right to me. Easy to repair, yet still being modular and also not needing 4 different types of screw. You also don't need to remove microscopic bits and pieces to do a housing replacement.
Now I'm wondering what the S24 Ultra is like, given that the S24 Ultra is being heavily advertised in the UK market.
1:42 no i have the new Galaxy S24 Ultra and i'm very happy. I had the A52s 5G before but this is a huge stepup because its so much more powerful and i never had any lag issues.
The A52s lagged all the time and got slow
You're the only revewer
i hear confirming what i think, that they sell us the same thing for the past 3 or 4 years, but then again, you can be unbiased, you buy the phones you review.
I actually like the iPhonesque look of the S24 and S24+. I've always liked the look and in-hand feel of the modern iPhones so to have an Android option that feels the same way in-hand is a plus for me.
I love your vids your vids are so entertaining and helpful
I have a device called the braille note touch plus, as I'm lined, which I use for school. It's a braille note taker device that uses android as its main operating system. It still runs android 8.1, with a security patch from 2019. It also runs the software rather slowly.
Thanks for letting us know this. Good to hear how tech can help or hinder people facing challenges in their daily lives.
Finally an Apple iPhone that's easy to disassemble and repai... oh wait!? 🤣 Thanks Hugh, it's good to not be anxious about a repair job for once! 😎

05:09 Samsung is using a molex connector, seeing that name brings back memories from the 90s/00s
That's a SIM reader, not a molex connector. They make way more than just PC power connectors (which by the way are still widely used today, if you are into building PCs).
Huge you creeping up on the big 1 mil man. Hope you get there! Still rocking the S9 lololol
I hope the tech world sees some new innovations soon, like Apple Vision Pro. The smartphone formula is kind of perfected already, the only real thing to improve would be the build quality and ease of repair. Instead of spending all the research on making the camera better, they should make a phone more modular and get rid of the glue. I don't like the idea of glue at all, it has to be possible to make it water tight without glueing. I hope your vchannel reaches 1 million soon! Your videos are amazing!
Yes the vision pro. A 3500 dollar AR headset. Groundbreaking. Stunning and brave..

I'm still rocking android 10 on my LG G7 and it's doing the work. Android 14 on my S21U is neat too but core functionality doesn't feel significantly different.
Good vid Hugh
My SHARP Z3 from 2017 with android 7.0 still runs without issues.i love this thing and i'm keeping it till it disintigrates by it self!
Amazing 🤩
For adhesive like that it's important to apply rapid hard forces than an even ramping pulling force. Otherwise you'll end up pulling a lot harder than you need to. Think of it like loosening a rusty nut, a few taps with a reasonably light hammer requires a lot less force to break it than a breaker bar and body weight.
I also run Android 8.1.0 on a LG Q6. It cost me 140 € seven years ago and it is still running OK, even the original battery is still going strong.
Engineers, why is a glass sandwich the optimum construction for an object you hold 3-6 feet above concrete?
"Premium" feel
Hugh what phone do you use?
Keep up the good work
I still love my Note 10+ and I am not going to let it go. Long live SD card slot. I will probally looking to replace the battery soon but considering the fact that the back glass glue was so weak that it fell off recently, the battery glue is not a problem.
You should really upgrade to the Note 20 Ultra. Last Note to have the SD card and probably the same cost as what you'll spend getting another battery lol
I would love it if Samsung brought the SD card slot back! In my Galaxy S23 plus it could easily take one since the A54 has one and it's in the software.
I'm still using my S10 and debating on replacing it either with an A54 model or maybe the Note20 since they both have the micro SD slot... I wish companies would stop taking away good features.
The super tight battery screams Note 7 all over it tbh
I think the Note 7s issue with lack of space was inside the battery itself tho, it was literally a design defect with the battery itself, where the layers could end up shorting if I'm remembering it correctly.
I don't think any phone in past 10 years has any room for the battery to freely expand a bit here and there.
Same thought 😂😂😂
@@Kalvinjj from what I gather the lack of space in The battery itself was caused by the lack of space in the phone where it squished ut with Enough pressure that they popped
01:37 - Hugh, I have a Galaxy S7 that's also up to Android 8. But I'm only using it as a spare device for phone calls and SMS.
Not only does the battery not last a day, but the security updates are very outdated. It's a security risk and that's why I do not log in with my main Google account, full of my sensitive personal information.
Google and Samsung has recently committed to many years of software and security updates. And to me, the security updates matters more than the software, and helps promote longevity of the device and reducing e-waste.
4:04 Hugh will remember that
It's worth mentioning not to use too much alcohol when softening up battery adhesive because some models have the fingerprint scanner under the battery that can become damaged...
1:40 My old tablet had Android 5 but I stopped using it a few months ago because nothing was compatible with it,
It was a Lenovo tablet and my aunt bought it for me in like 2015
1:40 My Oneplus 7T Pro runs on Android 12. And here I thought I was on old tech and somewhat old software [Although not that old) but sounds like yours is much, MUCH older. I mean hey, if it still works then use it till it dies out 👍
Runs great, battery still like new, no bloatware and runs my games just fine. I’ll upgrade until my phone either dies out somehow or slows down.
The fact that we can regard a phone that still requires heat and prying to access vital components (battery) as "easy to repair" says a lot about how screwed the modern tech landscape has gotten.
1:46 still using a Note8 - from what I'm reading it's 6yrs old by now, and runs Android 9.
Hey, do you not need to remove the old adhesive & add a new one to the back panel when reattaching it?
1:43 Android 9. It's a tablet tho and I use it for UA-cam and reading comics. The battery in a tablet don't fail nearly as quickly as the ones in a smartphone
I have the S 23 ultra but there’s still a lot of old games that don’t work on android 14 because it’s too new and the games that I like to play are too old so I still keep some old android phones around just to play those old games and I do love the old OSs too
1:42 my Galaxy A13 4G is at android 13 with the update to android 14, my Amazon Fire HD8 2018 is on Lineage OS 16 based on Android 9, Galaxy tab 2 on Lineage OS 13 based on Android 6.
Yes custom ROMs ! I use a pixel 4 on the daily broke my six fixing a ball joint ., I'm running graphenee OS !
Tbf, that battery glue degrades over time. The assumption is that on the vast majority of devices the battery will be only replaced after 2-4 years (I pretty much agree), and at that point it will be noticably weaker.
That's a piss poor excuse though. That battery has to be removed for display repairs. And I've known people to break their screen in a few months. Lol
@@-ThatGuy-
In that case, just use the alcohol and or heat.
@@Alias_Anybody They just shouldn't make the adhesive so strong. Excessive heat is bad for batteries and alcohol is only so effective.
The back panel being easier to pop out is also a problem. There are numerous reports of it falling out just after 1-2 years of use.
@@-ThatGuy- If you go watch PDK or Jerry they pull the battery without much trouble. Hugh is either incredibly weak or he received a device with far more glue than normal.
I've recently switched from Android 8.1 (Blackyberry Keyone) to 14 on a Google Pixel 7 Pro. It took some time to get used to it.
Also, my main phone, Samsung Galaxy S9+, is rocking Android 10, which although reasonably modern, is the last supported OS for many apps nowadays, and the critical apps are now Android 7.0+. So it seems that I might be getting a phone upgrade after all soon.
Might also buy that folding Motorola as a secondary device - never had the chance to use a folding phone before ;)
You're not alone in running an old phone, I still use a OnePlus 6 because nothing that has come out since has felt like it meets my requirements.
My oldish tablet's android version is 5.1.1 lol. Good enough to some light browsing and watching videos along with a lil bit of gaming but nothing fancy. Camera lens is missing for some unknown reason but I've used the camera only a few times ever. Battery is bigger than I remember it to be, 4000 mAh capacity.
sounds an awful lot like an LG G Pad 7, I've got one of those (don't know if it's 5.1 tho or just 5.0 but not much of a difference). Removed the camera lens myself since the stupid thing is the thickest point so it got super scratched and couldn't read QR codes anymore (it's only real use).
Works well when you disable ALL the google stuff that just ain't helping with anything after all. It's quite incredible what de-googling the device did to it, runs like new other than some random reboots (I think it might be reaching storage write limits on some blocks and plain corrupting some system areas).
@@Kalvinjj Samsung Galaxy Tab A6 lite. I had to factory reset it one time cause I couldn't use the playstore on it but only thing I used it for was UA-cam, light gaming, and that radio app. I may just pick it up again, uninstall UA-cam & disable it, and install some games on it at some point. Most google stuff is already disabled so minimal work on my end. Love the tablet even if it is outdated lol.
If the iPhone 16 has this kind of repair ability, then I’m hoping to get one soon
You should take apart the Vision Pro and assess its repairability. It looks pretty painful to take apart
hey I have a question. Is it possible to swap the main board of the oneplus 9 pro into a another oneplus 9 pro? That seems a lot easier than replacing my screen.
That shouldn't be a problem as unlike Crapple, OnePlus didn't pair any parts to a specific phone
id bet yes but i cant promise they didnt do some serializing
Rocking the Galaxy Note 8 here 😊 changed the battery two times already. Without a new battery I would not be able to use my beloved Note 8
When has the battery moving around inside the case ever been an issue? I never heard about it being an issue back in the Android 4 days when you could expect your phone to have a removable battery; the only time my Galaxy note 3 used to switch off randomly due to a battery moving was because the battery was starting to swell and would lose contact with the pins.
the old removable batteries had a hard shell built into them, unremovable ones are a lot softer
but with how the phones laid out just a tiny bit of double sided tapes probably enough to keep it still
As your fellow BlackBerry KeyTwo user, I too am still using Android 8
Im amazed at how tiny the motherboard is compared to the iphone, or even other android phones! I just cant wrap my head around how they managed to cram all those components onto a board that small.
My S24 Ultra is a BEAST

Samsung has been using this layout forever, not that that's bad. My S7 was almost identical. My old Note II was very similar, albeit with a removable battery.

On the Samsung trying to be Apple thing, I recently went to the Highpoint Apple store to have them do something about the broken rear mic on my 15 Pro Max (which they covered under warranty and had replaced the rear-glass assembly within 2 hours), and I noticed across from Apple and one floor down was a dedicated Samsung store, and it looked just like the Apple store but 1/4 the size and with less people inside. Not gonna lie... this teardown just revealed all of Apple's flaws in what i feel is their sense of innovation. Why was this phone so easy to tear down?! That motherboard is extremely small!!!! Omg! Someone tag tim cook in this video!
4:18 wait, you were able to get it out *without* breaking the pull-tab!? All the newer Samsungs with that that I have done, I've never been able to do that without breaking the pull-tab, thus going back to the iso to get the battery out.
It's weird, because for Oppos or Huaweis or Xiaomis it's not a problem, but for Samsung it feels like it's much harder than it should be.
There are no Antenna wires ko unlike I found in many Latest Android phones after teardown them❤❤❤
