    I have a 2015 27" 5k, I had to open it to replace a failed drive, I didn't feel like messing with adhesive so I just used clear duct tape to hold the machine together. Makes servicing so much easier 🤣

    Took the quick route, and used an external SSD to replace the internal hard drive. On older systems, the external is fast enough. There's no risk of breaking the iMac during the opening or upgrade process. An external drive is easy to back up, using imaging software; unplug it and pop it into another system.

    Theres a quick and dirty method ive done which was to simply stick an ssd to the front of the og hard drive with double sided tape and move the cables over. This way you dont need to fully remove the screen. Theres enough clearance for the imac to be sealed up again without any issues.

    I got a base 2011 iMac 27 inch for $20 at a yard sale with a bad hard drive, bought a 1TB hard drive with thunderbolt, formatted macOS to run off the external hard drive and boom! I got a iMac. It takes about 2 minutes for it to warm up and get going but for UA-cam videos and using it for my iPod, ds, psp mods it works great! And I’ve brought the drive to friends houses to boot their Mac off of it to mod their stuff.

    Use 99.9% isopropyl-alcohol with the plastic cutter to ease cutting through the adhesive tape and reduce chance of the screen cracking ;-) Glad to see you used a Samsung SSD as certain drives will cause high fan spin on start-up, usually non-Samsung drives without the Apple firmware.

    I just picked up a 2010 27in imac. The 2010 doesn't have the bad gpus the 2011 has and i can upgrade other things like the cpu, gpu , hard drive and ram. i have 32 gb ram already to install. It comes with a i3 unfortunately but more fun with upgrades. I also plan to install a ssd card drive in to the cd drive area and a 3.5 storage drive that will maybe be 4tb in the old drive area. should have a nice running computer when done with hackintoshing it up to a newer os and or installing linux on it to keep it running in the future.

    Have a 2013 27 inch. Considered replacing internal drive but saw videos where screen fell off late at night. Mr Rosman? even recommended not doing this upgrade as they have had screens detach. Plus I shake👍😁 Hung a 120gb ssd off the back. Works well. The 27” is massive. Great big screen. Tried using a T5 and a T7 to boot from but no major improvement. So used a ordinary ssd. I think the T drives are too modern for the 2013 to take advantage of their speed.

    I have this exact same machine. The fusion drive failed and I bought the iFixit kit to replace it an SSD. Took it all apart, redid the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU, replaced the drive, put it back together...and it doesn't boot. Only one of the 4 diagnostic LED's on the MB lights up.
    I'm about to take it apart again, clean up and re-paste the CPU and heatsink, but I any other help is appreciated.

    • @Simulation101YT
      @Simulation101YT Рік тому

      The graphics on the CPU back then, was the Intel HD 4000, It was in fact worse than the one on the board (I'm assuming an Nvidia GTX 650-670), and even now, most CPU graphics chips have generally worse performance than that of an official graphics chip. Although the CPU upgrade itself would have been somewhat viable, it would have been more suitable to just keep the graphics chip on.

Shortly after I bought the Mac a power interruption scrambled 25% of my data, which was unrepairable with the SSD/HD combination, so I formatted and religiously backed up ever since! Still a great computer even after 10 years.

    • @ronkemperful
      @ronkemperful Рік тому

      @@psivewri It is comprised of two separate drives - a small SSD and a slow mechanical HD. Sometimes with a Mac, the two drives can be formatted separately but the SSD is quite small - just a few GBs. The combination, when it works is for the user like a magic trick for the frequently accessed data is stored on the faster SSD giving the illusion that the whole computer is running off an SSD. But because data is spanned over both drives, conventional drive repair software cannot repair the data like a regular drive when there is corruption.

    Why did you use rubber grommits on the SSD? SSD's don't have vibrasion concerns or need dampening...

      Because I used the existing drive mount. Why wouldn't I reuse that?

      @@psivewri I called it out because you made a point of mentionining it early in the video when you didn't give any context or reason behind doing so, which then made it seem as if it was a beneficial move for the changes you were making or as if it was an improvement.

    How is dGPU on the 2012, compared to previous years? Did they get slightly better like the 2012 MBP, in regards to failure?

      Basically bulletproof, I have never had the actual GPU die on one of these 2012 models. They also do not suffer the U8900 issue as the MacBook Pro 15-inch models from 2012/2013 did.
