Fighting brain cancer and defeating it. After my first surgery to remove a brain tumor..I was rectified to go back to using a de razor. I use a R 41 and just let the weight of the razor head do its job. Don't be in a hurry. I definitely learned to slow down, but never once cut myself. Slowing down is essential for a good shave. Too often us fellas get in too big of a hurry. Enjoy the shave and get baby smooth. Thank you geo for all of the videos and tips! You are the JEDI Master of shaving!

Growing up in New Jersey in the late 60s and 70s, I remember the body counts every night on the news. And then I saw how the vets were treated when they returned. I asked my dad, a WW2 vet why that was, and he didn't have an answer. Thank you to all the veterans for your service!

I am a cold water shaver. I take a large glass of ice cubes in the bathroom before every shave. I use separate cups for the razor and brush. I put ice in each cup and pour a few drops on top of the soap. After a warm/ cool shower, I put more ice in the sink and enjoy cold splashes on my face , neck and arms. The shave is great and causes less skin inflammation. I repeat the cold splashes post shave. Give it a try!

Hey Geo. That was an interesting letter you read. I too often shaved with cold water on board the ship while in the Navy. I restarted shaving with cold water after watching one of your videos and continue with it daily. Here in Phoenix it is more like lukewarm in the summertime though. I have applied many of the tips you pass on. When I 1st started shaving I didn’t have all of the luxuries offered now. One razor, and one or two types of soap. Glad things got better.
    Take care and be safe.

I tried the cold water thing a few times, but my skin didn't respond well to it. The shave was very difficult. Its interesting how for different people it works wonders. I am sure cold water is better for the skin though, as it is less irritating but it will depend on how a person responds to the shaving part.

You’re right. If you haven’t already, try a milder safety razor, though, and maybe a slicker soap.
A budget friendly combo would be a Merkur 23C safety razor and an Arko shaving soap (or stick), and don't hold back on the water for that lather !

I did some online searches on this topic and it seems that it was quite well-known since the 19th century that shaving with cold water results in better shaves. Great tip, have not done a cold water shave since my army days (40+ years ago). But now my skin gets irritated when I "hot shave", so I will try cold now. I guess cold water closes the pores, particularly around the hair follicles, and thus makes the skin less susceptible to damage/nick/irritations. Thanks!

Well I am as you know from my many mentions a great believer in using Thayers witch hazel as a pre-shave after warming up with tepid water and then finishing off with it again and I am like Sheldon in my mid-seventies with wire whiskers and paper skin. But I still find you need a good quality shave cream like Taylor of Old Bond Street and coupled with a good razor. I currently use a Feather AS-D2 coupled with a King C Gillette blade and find it is a good combo.

Have been shaving with a safety razor for a couple of decades ( a score) and I enjoy it better than cartridge razors.n I have tried a straight razor a few times only to require a blood transfusion each time. I have not given up on the straight razor but my face needs time to recoup. I have purchased a few more safety razors ( open/closed comb and adjustable). Do you have a recommendation as to how I should test (sorry, I am an engineer and like to test) each type of razor along with the numerous blades available?
