Like most people I made the change to a safety razor because of the price of standard cartridge type refills. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made. A safety razor when done correctly will give you a much closer shave and a puck of Shaving soap with a shaving brush will last you much longer. Listen to this man. He knows what he's talking about. Your skin and your wallet will thank you
Yes, yes. Same here. Made the switch in 2018. Never looked back. Months ago jumped the fence to straights. Found that once I produced a hell of an edge on a straight using hones and strops, been addicted again..lol... Cartridges, to many problems and waste. Geo is solid and right on.
I'm a Kiwi and I started shaving at 13. One of my earliest (and fondest) memories is of watching my Grandfather shave with his safety razor (which he purchased in the early 1930s!).
My Grandpa was born in 1890. I wish I had the straight razors he used. He died in 1976 when I was 10 years old. I wish I could go back in time and talk to him and share some shaving stories. Thanks for sharing this video, Geo!
I didn't have a dad to teach me. I'm thankful for men like you who share their wisdom for those of us who have just had to figure things out along the way.
You're a great teacher geo ! I learned to shave with a Straight Razor from you and believe me ,not only my friends were surprised , but even a pro barber admired me and said " They can not perform a shave like this on their own face with a Straight Razor ! Thanks geo .God bless you .
I started shaving when I was 12 with a Shick butterfly razor my dad had. I graduated to a straight razor when I was 16 when I found my stepmother's dads straight razor. I honed it stripped it and was shaving with it when she saw and gave me the razor to keep. I have a nice collection of wedge razors and DE razors.
An adjustable razor IS perfect for beginners! Start at 1 and work yourself slowly up to 6 with the Futur. You won't need to buy several razors to find the right one. Also, you can adjust an adjustable to the aggressiveness of different blades instead of using different razors on different blades. I started with adjustable and got bbs shaves immediately. Had I bought a non adjustable as a newbie and that razor had happened to be mild giving me a bad shave, I would have given up on safety razors. Get the Merkur futur, newbies. It's amazing.
Nice info Geo👍 I used to see my dad shave the traditional way with inexpensive razors, and he always got good shaves he always used old spice aftershave after alum, those days there were no aftershave balms. But yes traditional way feels.more natural to me than cartridge and foam Thanks for sharing this video 👍
Because of your videos that have educated me in the art of shaving with a safety razor, I switched over a year ago. I now use a 1964 Gillette Tech razor, best shaves ever and low cost. My blade of choice is the Astra platinum, followed by Pol Silver. Thank you Geo, I appreciate your time and effort to share your knowledge.
One bit of wisdom I got from George Bruno, a famous barber instructor, is to use Cremo as a pre-shave cream. Not only does it provide a second layer of protection underneath whatever you put on top whether it is shaving gel or shaving soap, but it also makes for a slick shave and it is easy to reactivate with more water if it dries up while you make your lather. On a bonus side, it's relatively cheap and you don't need a whole lot to put on your face. Note: I apply Cremo on my first pass and I only do two-pass shaves. I don't think it will linger after you shave it off, but I don't feel the need to add more yet with my setup.
I’ve been watching you for years now I’ve had a beard for 4 years and decided to shave normal cartridge razors are expensive and gave me irritation I already had a safety razor but was frustrated with trying to use it but I watched a lot of your videos and now i like using my safety razor I look forward to shaving because of you thank you for teaching me how to properly shave
My dad used one of these but he was greedy with his knowledge my grandfather gave him. I’m surprised, really, that I have only now into my 30’s, discovered this. Looking forward to actually shaving instead of scraping and pulling my skin off and planning a rather lengthy (3-4 days) recovery time from a cartridge.

outstanding videos, nice work.. Besibes, i love your backgrounds fron Greece.. Acropolis, Samos, etc.. I wonder if you are involved with my country in some way..
Very nice overview of shaving products. Surprised you didn't describe some of the starter sets you offer for beginners. Perhaps you should offer a starter set with several options. An adjustable safety razor - Rockwell 6C or Parker Variant (since they better suit different shaving skills (and beard growths) than a fixed blade safety razor), a large synthetic brush, Proraso soap or cream, IMUSA salsa bowl (which makes a great, cheap lathering bowl), alum block, and an aftershave (Proraso Green or Osage Rub), balm (Arko or Suavacito), or witch hazel option. One can make a sufficient lather with a pea-sized amount of soap or cream that is first pressed or distributed in a salsa bowl, before building a lather with a barely damp, synthetic brush. This can keep a soap or croap dry (and less messy). 'Blooming' isn't necessary to make a great lather, as you can make a great lather with flakes from a triple milled soap.
Thanks! In this one I just wanted it to be an overview of all the steps involved in the shaving process. I didn't even mention the names of all the products to keep it within time constraints. Thank you for your wise input though.
You have landed yourself in great the predicament! You may have to change your name from Geofatboy to Professor Geofatboy given how wonderfully well these tutorial videos are presented, structured and delivered. Bravo, Well Done and a Jolly Good Show! ;-)
This is the right way of healthy wet shaving. Pre shave cream. It's also recommended with wet electric shaving. The brush can clean your face. Actors and and stars and politicians for sure like these videos..
My grandpa was always impeccably well groomed and I pretty much got the habit from him. Shaving is a morning ritual that truly helps me prepare for the day ahead. The whole process of preparing the razor, lathering the cream, performing the pre-shaving/shaving/post-shaving is just bliss... I honestly don't get the big bearded hipsters I see everyday, but hey, if it's their thing... Love these videos Geo, keep them coming. Happy Easter.
I don't understand the hipsters either. Why would a young man voluntarily want to look thirty or forty years older than he is? Never understood that at all. Also I think a real man takes a blade to the face every day.
Even though I've been set shaving for a few years now, this was still good information. This is there first video to really talk about the alum block in detail. Sharing to Facebook, let the whining of, "I'll cut myself," begin.
Using safety razors is much cheaper in the long run, it's much better, much less irritating, and much more enjoyable when you lather up with a brush and nice cream. I realise I sound like an advert, but I used to utterly hate shaving until I switched to a safety razor a few months ago. I shall never look back. Wet shaving with a safety razor is a proper art in itself, and coming out of the bathroom clean-shaven and without suffering from severe razor burn is extremely satisfying. I'd recommend a safety razor to anyone. You also get the perk of not being preached to by modern ideologues...
@Thomas Jefferson I am budget shaver. One razor, one brush and two packs of blades. And a different soap every time I run out of it. I am not going to say that I do not want to collect but I can't. Good shaves.
My grandfather only has bad things to say about safety razors haha. He always talks about his time in the military when he always carried a pack of cigarette rolling papers to patch the cuts after shaving with a razor. He went to electric shaving when he got the chance. So i'm actually teaching him the DE razor method. How funny is that
I think I was 13 or 14 when my dad bought me a can of Barbasol and some 2-blade disposable razors to scrape off my then cappuccino stain of a mustache. I shaved with disposables for way too long - until I was 26. I was thinking "I'm sick of these things, I need to get a REAL razor" and was looking at cartridge razors when I realized that DE razors were still a thing. I saw the cost per blade and was immediately sold. Bought a Lord L6 (that I still use) and never looked back.
i'm looking for help finding the best safety razor to start out with. I tried a straight edge/single edge from "SUPPLY" and it did not work out so well. Chronic razor burn on my neck has plagued me for months and I need a fix for it
Rockwell 6c razor with feather, Astra stainless, shark, or trig blades. I hear persona and kai are very good blades but I have not tried them. I'm working my way through a sample pack of blades, and I found these to be good. My suggestion is to start on plate number 3 and work up especially with the feather- it is very sharp, so in the beginning you may push on the razor which will nick/slice you. Use short strokes and be patient at first. I have used feather blades on plate 4( helps with neck irritation) first and 2nd passes, with the 3rd and 4th passes on plate 3 to minimize the likelihood of cuts. Warning: you may become slightly addicted to shaving :)
I only wish someone had told me about wet shaving long ago. I think we're the minority. Gillette sold the masses on needing an overpriced plastic toy for shaving. Most won't try it
