  • "Red Ryder" began life as a comic strip in 1938 and told the story of cowboy Red, his aunt the Duchess, and Native American sidekick Little Beaver. A radio series began in 1942, first over the NBC Blue Network, then later Mutual and finally the west coast Don Lee network.
Red Ryder came to film earlier in 1940 in the form of serials and B-movies, the last of which was released in 1949.
Actor Jim Bannon, who portrayed Red Ryder for the last four films, also starred in this TV pilot episode, titled "Whiplash", in which Ryder is tasked with tracking down a stolen shipment of gold.
Neither this 1951 pilot, nor the 1956 pilot starring Allen "Rocky" Lane as Red Ryder were picked up for series. A further 'backdoor' pilot was produced as a 1963 episode of "Gunsmoke" titled "I Call Him Wonder".
The Red Ryder legacy is probably best known by the film "A Christmas Story" (1983). You'll shoot your eye out!

The Dutchess was played by veteran character actress Olive Carey who was in a bunch of westerns including John Wayne's 'The Searchers.'
