After watching your channel about 3 or 4 years ago, I decided upon the mobius action cam and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Great sound and picture quality and very small. I mounted it in the matrix with a magnetic mount which I can easily remove on a hot day or to take inside to view the clips. I have caught so many close calls and even hit a deer one morning and put these on my UA-cam channel. Thank you so much for your reviews. I trust your opinions.

    UPDATE 02 March 2015
I've received the answers to a few questions I asked the manufacturers.
    1) The Car Lamp Open/Closed menu as expected does warn the driver if they are driving in the dark with the headlamps off. It judges this by the exposure.
    2) Apparently the battery used is a Standard GoPro size....which is great. Normally I try to avoid dashcams that use batteries, because when the internal battery fails you have to replace the whole camera - in this case you can buy a new battery. Just a reminder - I can't comment on the long term reliability of any cam after only a month of use.
    3) I wasn't sure how the emergency button handled the files. I was concerned that if you saw something you wanted to keep - but the camera started recording the next file before you managed to press the button then you would be protecting the wrong clip. Well it turns out the manufacturer has thought of this. "When this button is pressed, if current recording is less than 1 minute, then current file and the file before this (together 2 files) are locked"
    4) Not a question, but I have raised the issue of the need for resellers in China who can export to Europe and also the Speedcam database is no use in the UK until the camera can support additional database formats. Both these things are being explored...but the database issue isn't a simple quick fix.

A solar battery charger option might help when going o short trips while using that parked mode & eBay has relatively cheap 12v one's. This might aid on having constant power during the day at least.

I plan to get this as my first dash cam...finally...but my dream unit would have one additional camera...one with good sound that I can hide and point towards the driver's side window for protection against lawless marauders (of any sort) who typically approach the driver's side of the vehicle. There may be more of a need for this in the USA than elsewhere but the need is very real. Perhaps you can convey this to manufacturers in you travels. Regards and thanks for the wide variety of gadget reviews at different price points. I appreciate all you do here.

Wow, that is an awesome package they put together there. I would guess the OEM on this is the same as the SJCAM series by looking at the case styling and software menues.

Fantastic, I've was looking for just a one camera system like this until the 0803 mini you reviewed (Work colleague also got one based on your video) but always found they had 480p res. Will keep an eye out as a few hundred quid for a solution like this I would pay for. Unsure why anyone would want a suction cup, I simply have a dirt cheap £30 dashcam I have in the boot if I have to use another vehicle.

We installed the K1S this week and it seems to work great. Several problems we have are with the rear camera on a 2014 Toyota Avalon. With the rake of the rear window and the defroster grids, there were only two places to locate the camera. Middle of the window or about five inches from the top center. The only places the defroster grid were wide enough to adhere the base without covering the grids. This produces an extraordinary amount of glare from the rear window shelf (tan interior). Covering the shelf with a dark towel has helped but figuring out how to attach a CPL filter would probably eliminate 90 percent of the glare. Other than that and wish the GPS cable were longer. The camera does pretty well in both daylight and night driving. We did tweak the AE down to -0.7. Techmoan thanks for your great reviews.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Got mine on 06-06-2015. Was easy to install. Decided to test it by driving in St. Louis. The system freaked out while on the Daniel Boone Bridge on I-64/U.S. 40/61. It didn't like the action of passing under the green superstructure. Other than that it worked well. As you noted, the audio is hideous! For what it is, it does the job. Barely. I'm happy with it, and $240 is a fair price. Now if it survives excessive summer heat and the deep freeze winter cold we have in Missouri, then it'll earn my respect.

I've held off on buying & wondered why no one made a car cam like this. this is definitely closer to what my idea of a good vehicle cam should be. my ideal is one that is completely integrated (not visible) & totally fuss free while driving. i want it to be trustworthy so if anything occurs during a drive, I know it'll be recorded. I do wish the remote cams were smaller on this unit.

Priceless. Most people buy dash cam to record every day. thats not me. i only record when i feel like it. Living in OZ and finding myself in the middle of NO WHERE GPS is a good thing. A good quality Navigator will also have GPS. But still it's good to have a back up when all you can see to the horizon is, NOTHING! when the temperature is 45 degrees C ( 113 F in the shade). I need to know which way is water, & home.

Nice video as usual. Very informative. I found only one for sale on ebay here in the U.S. and it was going for $345.00 or 224.00 pounds. Quite expensive. The sound quality is important to me as I belong to a neighborhood watch program & currently us a gopro 2 mounted directly in front of me on the dash and the video and the sound was used to disprove a confrontation I had with a person when he pulled up next to me and tried to say I confronted him. It was priceless when presented at our next meeting and to the sheriff's deputy who attends our meetings. I would have liked to have had a dual
lens camera at that time. Thanks for your work. I do subscribe.

Following the great review I bought one of these through Amazon (UK) in July. Pricey (£210 GBP) for the full spec but went for it anyway. I was initially delighted with the unit as the image quality was good and accessing the data (via PC) was straight-forward. Unfortunately after a while I noticed the unit sometimes wasn't recording correctly and occassionally froze. It now is very intermittent ("recording started" shortly after "recording stopped") and the truth is that it is just luck whether it is recording or not in the even that something happens. It seems that I'm not alone and quite a few people suffer with this (search dashcamtalk forum) issue. It is such a shame because as per your review it is potentially a great product, if it just worked reliably I would be singing it's praises. I'm trying to get a replacement control unit in the hope that it will not be faulty too, I so want it to work! So be warned guys, research this problem and make sure it's cured before you commit your hard earned cash.

I bought two of the Mobius cams based upon your excellent review of that camera, and have been using them as front/rear dashcams with EXCELLENT results for close to a year. Even with the wide angle option, the 'super capacitor' option and the deluxe accessory version my setup is still far less money than this offering from K1s, and having two complete separate systems allows greater safety & versatility in the event one of them were to fail. I wouldn't want a tiny monitor screen like this one anyway because to actually try to use it while driving would be far too distracting and of very limited use, IMHO. The Mobius cameras have been completely reliable & easy to set up and use, and even after all this time they appear to be the best value for the money particularly when compared with a front/rear system like this. I agree that having a GPS tied in to your dashcam system is not helpful.

I must say its really rather nice, and thanks to Mats excellent review it was everything I expected.
    * As a little update, after installing and using the camera for a while I must say that the sound quality I'm getting with my camera is far superior to the sound in the review. I'm not sure if its something that's been sorted in a firmware update or not, or whether I was just lucky. Just thought I'd mention it.*

I like how small and unassuming this entire system is, this is really made so you could really hide it, to keep them from getting jacked, and the button could be put on the dash, so you don't need to ever see the unit unless you really need to.
one thing i could think of if i wanted to modify the base, I'd extend out the buttons from the main unit so you could put it in the head unit and be able to fully control it and even get a backup cam if i so choose.

Just gone through a few of your car-cam vid's. Very informative, I should say, as well as interesting. What I do like is your audio presentation. You have the perfect voice for this kind of 'info-vlog' (did I just invent that word?) But, in any case, you do a great job. Great video's, very informative and fantastic presentation. Well done you.

I have been looking a dash cams for awhile and after your excellent review, I have settled to purchase this one. I am very interested in the rear camera as a reversing camera as well.. As I run a dual battery system in my vehicle I will have problem with the battery running flat by using the 12v plug..I just paid $517.70 AUD, but I am sure I am definitely going to get my bang for the buck out of this... Keep up the great reviews.. Cheers

Hi Again, Just letting you know that I've just checked out prices on eBay and for this unit under the brand name "Ambarella A7LA70 K1S Mini Car Dash Camera Front Rear 1080p 64G Hidden 2CH DVR " it's selling for $332.69 from China which I think is pretty dam good for what you get in this package. Date of view is 6/06/2016 at 19:12:53. Again from the first post I sent, it's a BLOODY YIPPA MATE. Thanks for all your reviews you do to help "US" choosing the best product that suits our needs. And with this one, I didn't care how much it was even before I typed it in eBay. I would have paid up to $500 for it. Thanks, Kev.

Anecdote: I'm giving you the perspective of a friend who i helped set up their dashcam and OBD reader. I do have my own but have yet to run into this issue, there arent many traffic cams where i drive
'I've actually used my GPS and OBD data login to successfully contest a speeding ticket, claimed i was doing 10MPH over the speed limit the GPS showed my estimated speed and my OBD data logging showed my engine RPM and what gear i was in, take that and work out how many RPM the tires were spinning at and the size of the tires and you have an exact speed, this showed that at no point in that day was i ever 3MPH over any of the posted limits, and at that specific intersection where i was claimed to be doing 30mph in a 20MPH school zone, i was between 3 and 5MPH under that entire block(15-18MPH) the automated ticketing system was either miscalibrated, spoofed by my vehicle's unusual dimentions, or the camera tagged me with the speed of someone else'-paraphrased

    • @denvera1g1
      @denvera1g1 8 років тому

+denvera1g1 note that, at least in my experence the OBD reader only shows the gear you are in on manual vehicles, on my car the page isnt populated with data, though it does tell me output shaft RPM, so it would work just as well for me if i ever have to contest a speeding ticket

Just picked one of these up and it's a great system overall. If I had one complaint, is it's use of micro USB connectors for everything. If you have to remove the unit that's 4 plugs to remove and we all know how unreliable they can be in the long term. Would be nice to see a future model have a more robust connection system.

CONSIDER investigating AMAZON -U.S. negative feedback: here's an interesting excerpt of a 1-star post ...(Titled "Doesn't cut the mustard in typical Southern California Temperatures" Sept 14th, 2015)...
"I see a lot of complaints about units failing in the heat. Working in the semiconductor industry for the last 30+ years I know there are 3 basic grades of IC's:
    Military (-55 to +125C),
    Industrial (-25 to +85C)
    and Commercial (0 to 70C).
Dashboard temperature easily reach 160 degrees F (71 degrees C). Since the actual junction temperature of the IC is considerably higher than the ambient temp, ALL commercial grade devices will probably fail. I'm not sure if the ICs made in China follow these basic temp ranges, I suspect they don't even test for temperature under typical worst case ambient temperature. Thus all the failures.
I've returned the product and I'm in search of a reliable unit..."

I have just installed this one in my car and im very happy with it, I have to say the audio is almost a waste of time however i find it great at video front and rear and is very easy to install, what i will say is use a very good quality micro sd card with high read and write speeds, the first one i tried would record for about 45 mins then the videos would show as invalid on a white screen, i switched out to a high speed card and all is now great. I love its small size, the version i have is im miles per hour but that is ok.

The only thing that I think it needs is a circular polarizer for both cams to get rid of most reflections. Everything looks fine and the screen at the DVR is a good thing to have to play with settings.

    I acquired this in 2015.
Mine did stop recording at a point, but the issue was resolved when I changed the microSD card. I have since acquired a high endurance microSD card specifically targeted for dash cams.
My unit is not on the dash or in the glove box it is well hidden, so although it's warm, I don't recall it overheating.

Majority of cameras that you have shown us, produce that effect and I am guessing this is due to the the video quality rate.

Understandable, but for the past two years I've been using my K1S in my car without any major issues aside from not paying attention to the impact sensitivity and a cheap peach memory card. I still like this one, plenty of features and still darn reliable despite all the emergency recordings from hitting the ever growing number of potholes...
There was this firmware that I will refer to as "Bitching Betty" where a voice prompt would CONSTANTLY announce what mode the cameras were in, or the GPS signal mode. Glad they nipped that one in the bud...
But like any electronic device this dashcam requires some basic maintenance where you will need to reformat the card once every month, aside from that and proper settings... I LOVE this dashcam. While I agree with Techmoan, the audio isn't the greatest... it still performs well even after two years.

Techmoan has the best ability I've seen to create reviews on technical equipment that doesn't assume viewers have a reasonable level of IT nous (that's me !). I only recently embarked on research to decide what dashcam to get and Techmoan has been a brilliant resource for me. Huge thanks to you Mr. Techmoan.
If this IT numpty could ask a question please ....... The layout of my car means that the front camera lead supplied with the K1S isn't quite long enough to facilitate hiding the wire out of sight. With your expert knowledge of electronic gizmos, are the connecting plugs fitted to each end of the supplied camera lead such that a decent electronics retailer would be able to supply a lead I could use to extend the reach of the supplied lead ? (if any other viewers have been able to resolve this problem, any clues to take the pressure of Mr. Techmoan would be most welcome). Thank you.

Nice review and nice introduction and end seeing your face! I like to see you talking to the camera! One thing (maybe somebody else asked this before, but I couldn't find it): May having the screen unit inside the door pocket be the reason for the poor sound quality? Where's the microphone? Maybe having the display over the dash could improve the sound. It's just one thought I had while watching your video. Anyway, I agree with you, this dashcam looks very interesting! Thank you!

Great video as always! cant wait untill manufacturers start catching on to this and start building the controller seperated from the camera so we can have better quality cameras and if need be bigger control boxes that we could hide with out being in the way! i wonder if they support bigger cards for this. maybe next dual set of cameras would be 1080p front and rear with dual cards or something for longer record time.

I purchased this camera at Amazon: Spy Tec K1S Dual Car Dash Camera + GPS Logger. I was very happy when I received it. Finally got myself a dual 1080p camera. My happiness was really short. I unpacked and hooked up cameras, but it worked aprox. 20 seconds and started to constantly rebooting and freezing. I was doing everything to make it work, but nothing helped. This unit was simply broken out of box. I had to return it back to Amazon. I'm very disappointed with this camera. Hopefully it was the only one unit which was bad, not the entire line of bad cameras.

I think the lens have different color coating, one is blue and one is red. Good!
The cameras are not so small to be considered hidden, I think can be even smaller.
After I saw that the Mini 0806 is using two MicroSD card slots now I expect for all future Ambarella dual channels to have two MicroSD. Not necessary one card for each channel but if is recording in the same way as Mini 0806 does will be great.

Well i thought it would be nice with an update about the K1S:
I had this for now over 2 years August 2016, and so far this has been working really well.
It is pretty decent and does its "job" i permanently mounted this in my old Opel/Vauxhall astra,
right behind the ignition lock below the instrument cluster it is a nice small unit that is more or less
    hidden.
I think the quality been pretty decent i read about that people had problems with the micro usb
connectors, i have not taken my unit apart but i know it is common practise not to solder the metal housing
of the connector to the board correctly.
So i assume most of the people who had problems had some force/movement
on the connectors, these connectors are small and fragile. I think it pretty important that you
do not wiggle the connectors around to much, Otherwise i think this unit performs pretty well.
Only thing i really could wish for is a lower compression of the videos, they are a bit unsharp/blocky
    due to the high compression.
