    If you want to add a parking mode to this camera and don't mind all the extras wires - they do make an accessory for this - I haven't tested it. amzn.to/2GhXtef

    *The day I finished making the video, this camera went out of stock on Amazon US. So I've held back publishing it for a few days to see if they were getting any more stock. But as this seems unlikely in the short term and it's still available elsewhere, rather than wait any longer, I've published it.*

    Hi Matt. Thank you so much for this! I purchased one based on this video and review and installed it in my Mini. Last Saturday I took the car in for some minor works and MOT, and after reviewing the footage I caught the mechanic doing 114mph when on a test drive!!! Furious does not cut it, but I have him backed into a corner because of this camera (if you want to see the footage let me know!)
    Thank you again for this and for a most excellent channel. Always a family favourite.

    I'm yet to see anything by aukey which isn't good. I have a drone, a mechanical keyboard and some phone cables by them- and now I've heard good reviews about their dashcam and charger packs. For stuff so cheap it's really remarkable. They're rapidly becoming one of my go-to companies.

    I would no longer recommend this. It's good, but they're creeping the price up on it. Instead, wait to get the Viofo A129 on offer, better quality, has GPS and lens filter, as well as 2.4G and 5G Wifi.. It's about £160 normally, but at least once a week it goes down to around £115 on Amazon. Well worth it!

      I also bought a Mobius after his review. In fact, I bought 3. Two in my car (front & rear) and one to use in my bus at work. 128gig card gives over 20hrs' recording. the cam runs for almost 10 hours each day, 5, sometimes 6 day per week, 48 weeks a year for the last 4 or is it now 5 years? I've dropped the cam at least twice whilst removing it & getting out - so at least a 6' drop onto concrete. And still the Mobius continues to provide sterling service without so much as a dropped frame. The ONLY downside I can find with the Mobius is the low light/nighttime footage isn't too good.
      For me, a dual setup is a no-no, I don't like all my eggs in one basket. my current setup of two identical cams at least allows for redundancy, if the front packs in, I can at least put the rear cam in my windscreen so I have some cover.

    My philosophy is that good videos win cases and get convictions whether in the car or where you live. So, it's worth investing in a little camera like this especially if you live in a congested area. It can save a whole lot of grief with legal and insurance claims. Thank you for the video.

    One other thing about having a large memory card is that since it is larger with a longer period before it starts writing over previous files it saves write cycles and the card will last longer before it starts corrupting data. This would still take awhile even with a small card to use up the write cycles but it still better just to have the little bit of extra reliability along with the longer record time

    Great review as always TM. Bought the DR02 after watching your video, I was waiting over a year to decide and I was hoping you'd post something that suited. Got the GPS module too with 128GB Toshiba. Working like a charm. Wish the start up chime was louder. The cable is thick but to be honest I think it's a positive, once the cable is tucked in along the car trim it's less likely to work its way out. Long time subscriber, keep up the wonderful work!

    Thats a really good dual Cam. Thinking seriously about upgrading to that. Presently i have a cheapo Chinese ebay dual cam. Its "OK", but the rear quality is a bit pants where as this one has equal quality cams front and back. After recently being re-ended by someone who was Txting at the wheel. Its definitely worth spending a bit more for a quality product.

    Quite interesting. I was surprised about how the file structure worked in the device. My dashcam is a function of the GPS mapping software I use on my smartphone, and it saves the last 5 minutes if I tap the save button or there is a crash (detected by accelerometer chip). I had (wrongly) assumed that recordings were 1 file per journey.
    I was quite surprised to see GPS as an optional extra. This is something that I would have thought was a standard feature, in-built.

    I don't have a car, or even a licence, but I still keep watching these videos! Regarding the short time it takes the camera to fill up and cycle through the SD card memory, is wearing out the memory becoming an issue? How many write cycles modern cards can take?

    I finally bought it and installed it in my 2000 BMW E-46 without a care about the digital radio which is not available in this country. However as soon as the camera was on (specifically the rear camera) the range of remote locking-unlocking from the key was severely limited. I had to walk next to the car to be able to use the key remote. Back to the installer we tried different keys, fresh batteries, syncronize the key, nothing worked. Until we unplugged the rear camera and the remote key was back to normal range again. I believe that the sensor for the remote key is somewhere around the rear glass so the cable of the rear camera was interfering. I drive with the rear camera unplugged now and I will be going back to the installer as he is working out a possible solution. I will keep anyone interested up to date when or if I resolve the issue.

    Looks like the camera can record roughly 6.4 hours when using a 64 gig card. But I presume that the size may be higher or lower depending on how much video data there is. For example the software I use on the computer can record the screen with a much smaller video file when there are changes on the screen only in a smaller part, or the changes are slow ..

    Humm, I would have thought the choke would have fixed it. I like the lack of bells and whistles on this...these cams. I just realized the field of view might be a little narrower than I first thought because you're in a Mini. It might look different if it was looking over the hood of something like a Buick Roadmaster lol. Great video, even if I was late watching it.

      I have 2 cars equipped with Mobius cams for about 4 years now (decision based on Techmoan review), with 32 Gb each and they work just fine except for batteries. Because of that the real time clock loses the time every time when I switch the car off. This is the only reason I am considering the new dash cam purchase.

    Was holding off on getting a new dual dashcam for a couple vehicles because of another trend I saw in the car audio community: I've seen a huge boom in popularity for those aftermarket Android head units. Some companies like Seicane make some really interesting models that blend into dash and look like OE.
    I bring this up since they have the ability via apps to run the dashcam software in the headunit. Could make for more stealth camera installations and serve dual functionality for a reversing camera. Was curious if you thought about looking into these android based radios for a future video.

    I have a similar issue with the Digicam rear camera. As soon as it is powered up, the DAB radio drops out and I get interference on FM and AM radio. I would say it is an issue with non-CE compliance of the device itself. I replaced my Digicams with a Blackview 650S and have not had the same issue.

    A great many dashcams - particularly top range cameras - seem to have dual cameras. I can see the point of a taxicam to view passengers but I am baffled as to why someone would opt to run a thick, inflexible AV cable to rear of their car. I have just got two separate cams and find it just far easier and more practical.

    My griffin usb power supply cuts out my radio, my anker one doesn't. Its possible i received a fake on i suppose. Ferrite beads can help too, as the usb cable acts as an antenna. Try getting some beads from maplin, keep looping the usb +5v power through it until it stops, might be more hassle than its worth though, ive had success with them.

    The rear camera interferes with key-fob signals in 2015 Subaru Forester and it greatly reduces the range of operation. Aukey has no solution to solve the problem except refund. The Aukey did not put any RF or EMI shielding. It is a big flaw in their design.

    @Techmoan:
    Thanks for this wonderful review! It came out just the moment I needed it! I immediately purchased this dashcam together with the optional GPS antenna (only hours, after your video release) and today I finally had the chance to install it properly (that is, with hardly anything of the system noticable from the outside and with no cable chaos in the car, all cables well hidden). In fact, I didn't use the 12V/cigarette lighter output at all, I got the power from the internal light circuits.
    I wonder however: Did you have any issues with objects in the car causing reflections on the camera's recording? If so, how did you handle this? Did you get rid of them?

    Just bought my 3rd Aukey DR02d for my camper van. Marvelouse camera, have installed in 2 other vehicles. Question is, how do I extend the rear view camera cable. it is 7 metres long and needs to be 12 mtrs to route. If I strung it like a washing line it would reach. Aukey support cannot help. The plugs are different to a standard micro mini-B although look the same. Cannot find any info. I think the only way so far, is cut into the cable and insert a length. Would extending effect the quality.

    Thanks for another thoughtful review. I got to thinking that instead of all that cabling front to rear that it might be acceptable to have 2 independent cameras. I have 12v outlets each end of the vehicle.
    Am I missing something, except a slightly higher cost?

    • @JsR-7and9
      @JsR-7and9 5 років тому

      Steve Jones Hi Steve. Yes, I realise that, but I was thinking about 2 independent (front type cameras) one at the front and one at the back, so they both recorded on their own hardware. I know they would cost more (as in my comment) but would be much more simple to install. Just a thought.

    But as I only do short drives I've only just put the front camera on today
    Yes I have been that lazy :P
    Decided to look at the video quality, and unlike you, I dont like it.
    You can barely read number plates!
    The vehicles has to be a single car length away in order to get anything legible!
    Any further away and you have no chance of reading the plates!
    So I am surprised you suggest this camera.
    As I would tell people to stick with the Mobius.

      In most recent cars there are two sockets of that form factor -- one is a cigarette lighter, and another is an "accessory socket" that provides something like ~10 amps of 12v current (way more than what the cigarette lighter socket provides). You're "supposed" to use the accessory socket for electronics and stuff, and use the cigarette lighter socket just as a cigarette lighter (though you can get away with using most simple electronics in the cigarette socket).

      Liverpool is an interesting city. It has some very fine architecture although it suffered badly during the second world war. A lot of the city was rebuilt in the 50s and 60s and many of the buildings from that period were utterly hideous. There used to be a Royal and Sun Alliance building a couple of hundred metres from the warehouse you refer to which was amongst the ugliest buildings I've ever seen. Fortunately, many of the worst examples have been demolished now and been replaced with much more attractive modern buildings.

    • @Jerbod2
      @Jerbod2 6 років тому +2

      Well to be honest you can't go much worse than how we did it here in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is known for it's canals and beautiful architecture, believe it or not, Rotterdam was just like that (just google "Rotterdam before bombing") you'll see how beautiful it was. After it got bombed by the germans the city burned days (a lot of the damage was done by the fire, not the bombs) but a common misconception is that the whole city was gone, fact is that poverty and stupid architects did the rest. They figured they could finally get a piece of land that they could make the way they wanted to, with straight roads, that's why Rotterdam is often called the Manhattan of the Netherlands, the skyline is unlike any other city. It's a damn shame what happened there, there's basically nothing left of a once beautiful medieval city, and the germans are barely responsible.

      Manny Calavera I know Amsterdam very well and it is indeed a beautiful city. I know Rotterdam only slightly and having been there, I was in no hurry to return. I think you are right, short-sighted city planners and architects did as much damage to the city as the Germans did and the same is true in Liverpool. Fortunately, Liverpool is now recovering from that but I haven't been to Rotterdam for a very long time so I don't know if that is true there.
      I also know Utrecht quite well and that's a lovely city (or is it a town, I don't know how you define a city in the Netherlands) as well.

    The Debbie Downer on this kit is the mounting hardware. In Texas, we have this obvious need for sunshades in our vehicles. So putting one up means that the camera and shade may be incompatible. I use a third party mount affixing my camera(s) to the rear view mirror, which has the double duty of making the camera easy to remove (and stow it in a cooler spot) and set up my sunshade. Even if the camera is easy to remove, the adhesive is open game for the sun, easily destroying it in a matter of months.
    My 2 cents worth.

    According to UA-cam your video is at 30p but I notice the dashcam footage has a repeated frame about every second, which doesn't immediately make sense (it would if you were editing at 25fps but the cam was recording at 24fps for instance.)
    Is that how the files actually are recorded from the cam, or is something else going on (I'm guessing maybe they are actually variable FPS at roughly 30, like you'd get from a phone.) Just curious. Thanks!

      Interesting, finally had a chance to download them and take a look. They claim to be 30.0 fps constant, the repeating frames are indeed baked in. Searching around, I found clips from others from this cam and some showed the same problem, and some didn't. May be sloppy hardware timing, and/or may be something they can deal with in a software update.
      In the end, for a dash cam, it's not that huge of a deal.. but also given the application, where it's constant linear type motion, it stuck out immediately :)

      in media production, if it's not recognized as hobby, the spent time must be compensated (the time is money), also all media in current Internet-everything era are fighting for the consumer time(spent on their content)-it's quite interesting topic about "time deficit" of consumers - advertisers already know that each minute of person spent on their visual content (it's the main trend that we consume today everything visually, children with "clip-thinking", also big discussion by psychologists and etc.) is literally recognised as "gold". To conclude all this - i'm not sure that many people decide to spend their really "precious" time to watch "junk" reviews. I see that Techmoan become very popular because of very unique technical forgotten equipment, which young generation never heard of (and never will, because they also don't have time to learn about it). But if owner see such model plausible, it's his decision, junk reviews is also the niche on UA-cam, it can expand the presense or bring new audience.

      I mostly came here just to listen to techmoan talk for a 10-20 minutes, I don't really care what the thing is that much because I probably wasn't going to buy it anyway... I mean he does excellent camera reviews but if I was interested in getting a camera then a quick look on dashcamtalk would tell me all I needed to know within a few minutes, then I could go searching for video samples such as his and half of the other stuff he covers is old equipment, which I do find mildly interesting, especially as he gives a good overview of its history but I'd almost never buy any of it myself, so I can't speak for anyone else but his videos are mostly entertainment to me.

      John Francis Doe with all my years of RDS car radios I’ve never once had any useful traffic information from the radio. You could still have it turned on to have it interrupt your own programming.
      Make a playlist or use Siri to select songs. I tend to listen to Podcasts while driving though. String two or three together and your covered for most trips.

    • @vgamesx1
      @vgamesx1 6 років тому +1

      John Francis Doe Yeah but if you use google maps then all that traffic is taken care of in the background so you don't have to think about it or if you use waze then I can for example see that there's a pothole a mile away from me and it only took me two seconds to look that up, that's insanely quicker/more efficient.
      As for music, as Hulge suggested, you can either download some music and let it play in a playlist/random order or there's always spotify and alternatives such as google play music which can play random music, it's just my opinion but I don't see much of a reason to turn on a radio over listening to a curated list of music I've selected for myself, but then again, I am a little picky about the music I like so I guess take that with a grain of salt.

    Hi Techmoan, I wanted to send you a message of thanks. 5 1/2 yrs ago, I watched one of your dashcam reviews and decided to get one (a Novatek 96650 H.264) for my car for the first time. Earlier this week, I had a crash for the first time, at no fault of mine. I was in a turning lane to exit a roundabout when the other person cut me off from a non-turning lane. He admitted fault at the scene, but then later declined to admit fault to his insurance company who have made the dispute so much more stressful. After crying and being in shock for 3 days, I am now glad to say that my insurance company confirmed that I was not at fault - ALL THANKS TO THE DASHCAM FOOTAGE. So, thank you, Techmoan!!! I see that you haven't done a newer review since this one from 3+ years ago. If you have any special recommendations on front+rear dash cams, I would love to know. I will be looking for a set for my next car. Thank you!! xx

I still use the DR02 (4K version) and I am quiet happy with it, but I wonder if something new is somewhere out there, maybe 4K60P combined front and back camera. Many cams you can buy today are worse than the DR02, so I don't even know what to try out....
