    I've recently been involved in a car accident in which the man in front of me backed up at a stop sign and hit my car to this day I don't know why he backed up and hit my car at a stop sign. But I'm having a world of trouble speaking with insurance about exactly what happened at that moment in the extent of damage to my car this video here I've seen before but after my incident it is motivated me to buy this product. Oh and lastly I'd like to say to the man speaking on this film I love your top gear style of your review perfect in every way I swear to God I feel like I'm watching top gear UK. :)

    Just keep it coming with the Car Cam Reviews. I love then, and will always do. Car cam is becoming more and more a "need-to-have-gadget" in cars these days. And until you find "The Ultimate" cam there will always be a need for reviews. ;)

    I got one and it's a super good camera!! You can see everything on the road. They fixed the "blocky vission" when you get under tree's with a software update. It's now much better!!

    You can see it on my wrist briefly in the video. I'm waiting for some proper apps to come out on it. It's ok at the moment..but since I've only received four text messages (three were spam) in the weeks since it arrived, its not really being used to its full potential.

    11:00pm Easter Monday and I'm just about to go to bed and then suddenly, there's a Techmoan video review and its 30 minutes in duration. Sweeeeeet . :D You're really making your mark in the world of video cameras, Mat. Such recognition from manufacturers is long overdue imo. I hope they take on board you're suggestions as the Chinese have. It will be interesting to watch. Thanks for posting this. Cheers, b.

    Hi. Fantastic review, concise and exceptionally clear, great job. I'm getting one of these in a month or so, and wondered if you had contacted the Pittasoft people regarding the map being well off. Also, when I got a very nice reply from them they included some details about a recent up-date. I told them that some clever UK techie users had made an alteration to the firmware to enhance the issue of Bandwidth, but Pittasoft have now addressed this, see the details below in a separate box

    Thanks for the info - it's surprising that the software isn't auto updating. I'll download the new version now and put an annotation on the video if this fixes the GPS issue. So just to confirm you also have the pixellation that I have - I want to be sure that I didn't have a faulty one.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 років тому

    Criticism is better when used constructively. The camera has some good features, but the compression and exposure need development. The GPS bug needs fixing as well. I did notice stuttering on the high compression video, but not on the low compression, higher bitrate footage. Presumably an even higher bitrate would resolve it issue completely. Even if they used the 1080p bitrate in the 720p mode I think it would be a big improvement.

  • @Techmoan
    @Techmoan  11 років тому

    The GPS bug has been resolved in version 1.001 of the player software downloadable from the Blackvue website. See the onscreen annotations and the information on the blog entry for more detail and links etc.

    the 3gf file format is for the accelerometer built in, (shock sensors if you want to call them that) it records acceleration in 3 dimensions, so as you race away or stop suddenly (hit something) and everything in between. [up/down, back/forwards, left/right) hope that helps.

    You might find that a monopod is useful for filming in tight spaces such as the car. In a pinch a tripod can be a monopod: extend one leg, keep all the legs folded against the centre column, and tape the legs together. Cheap monopods are genuinely useful in way that cheap tripods aren't.

    Just a note on the the GPS and the map views, it could be that the GPS date is set incorrectly. Currently it is set at WGS84 and it could be that the GPS in the camera (or even the viewing software) has the incorrect date specified

    I suppose in some parts of the word people would never contemplate breaking into someone's car to steal a camera...perhaps its like this in South Korea (where this is made). Unfortunately in the places where I tend to park, I wouldn't want to leave anything on display.

  • @sludgeguts

    Not just you Andy, I felt that the video was 'chasing' or 'hunting', almost as if the video was set to run at 1.5 speed for a few seconds then back to normal speed.
    tbh, this foible and the odd bit of pixellation isn't a huge issue for me - as long as there is clear focus to see registration plates or other such important detail. I also love the wifi aspect - easier to setup the camera.

    an excellent review as always. i've had my eye on blackvue dvrs and plan on getting one in the near future. the previous model had heat issues being in a hot car interior, hence the vents on the case for this model.
    according to a review of this unit at amazon there is a firmware mod to up the bitrate: " Standard bitrate is a bit low at 7000, but with some modding (search forums) you can increase it up to 15000." i'd be interested on how this could improve things and if there are drawbacks.

    Great review. I assume they'll be able to write a firmware fix for that inexplicable GPS inaccuracy. If they do that and eliminate that blocking problem I'll buy one. They're certainly one up over the GoPro app by allowing not only viewing of recorded clips but transferring them to your smart phone as well.

    For its successor, the DR650GW series, BlackVue just published a firmware update connecting the dashcam to the cloud. From a more practical point of view, I am excited that my proposal to replace the microphone toggle on/off with triggering manual recording has been considered as worth implementing. This new function enables recording of events and incidents not covered by accelerometers and motion sensor with just a gesture.
    Download firmware v2 from this location: www.blackvue.com/support/downloads/
    Good job, Pittasoft!

  • @PeterFalconII
    @PeterFalconII 11 років тому

    Just to let you know the update file is a zip with an exe all you need do is borrow a pc for five seconds format the sd card and run the application it will install the files onto the sd and then you put it into the camera. the new 550 camera just needs you to copy a file to the sd card, much easier.

    Very good review are always, I got hold of this DR500GW HD last month and as you say there are a few things not to good on a camera of this price, on this price point of just under £300 the pixilation is just not acceptable as is the one to two seconds back jump between one segment and the next and having a record time of 1,2 or 3 minutes when even cheap ones can have as much as 15 minutes lets this camera down,

    have this camera. One important point if you have a slopping screen, point your camera down a notch eg one click below the leveller which seems to be for cars which flat screens and not slopping screens like a Peugeot 307.
    If you don't you get too much light and too much sky - I had problems with light and watch initially a little dispaointed but moved down a notch and much better.
    pixilation through trees/sunlight still a slight problem which I think most cameras will struggle with

    Hi Techmoan - I've been enjoying your reviews. Thanks.
    I had considered the Blackvue DR500GW-HD, but I chose the DOD GSE550 instead because it was smaller, less visible from the outside, and it had a built-in LCD screen. This was useful to me so I could aim the camera. It also has GPS, shock sensors and higher resolution. It also doesn't have the exposure issues that I noticed in your review of the DR500GW-HD.
    I'd like to see your review of the GSE550, in contrast with the Blackvue!

    £280-400 price range according to the ebay link provided. Presumably some sort of wind-up or error considering that the £60 DVR in your last review is - overall - better than this in terms of performance and video quality. What you're paying for here is the brand name, a pretty box and a flashy GUI which, incidentally, is the exact same story with RoadHawk products. Once you remove all the fluff these are just average quality DVRs worth about £50. Thanks for the review nonetheless Matt. :)

    Hi Techmoan,
    To me, this looked like the camera I wanted, but as all the other cameras the problem is that if you want to put the camera in the holder, you always have to plug the power back in. Also when there is a rear camera, there is an extra cable to plug in. There must be something like an active smartphone holder for your car, but then for the camera. I just bought the Mio Mivue 358 this week and three days later a truck rammed my car.... lucky me.

    Hi. I love your reviews, very good, very well explained with great detail.
    I have recently purchased the new Roadhawk HD camera, which in my opinion is of better quality, less of the blocky image and less of the camera trying to adjust to the sun etc.. On the downside the software provided with the camera is not as good as the Blackvue.
    I think you should think about giving it a review.
    Stephen.

  • @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32
    @TwoPlusTwoEqualsFive32 11 років тому

    The only reason I could see me buying this is its smart motion detection. Other cameras have motion detection but this camera won't run out of battery. The think is, it's a theft magnet. My camera is the small bullet cam you reviewed and I covered it in some black duct tape to make it look cheap and hard to identify. In my town this would get your windows smashed or lock screw drivered insanely quickly.
