    Just picked up a lews mach pro combo and my casts felt a little short. I am newer to baitcasting and especially braided line. A friend recommended 10lb braided and haven't had an issue until today when my line dug into the spool and I watched my new jackhammer chatterbait fly into the abyss. I'm guessing I need thicker braid....

      Back up line? Do you mean backing? If so, no, I tie my braid directly to the spool and use a small piece of tape on top of the arbor knot to stop any slipping.

    Does spool depth make a difference? I have a Curado Bantam CU-200 and it's a very deep spool. I just put some boca ceramic bearings on it as well

      More depth, more line, more weight. Not great for start up and finish but great for pooled energy mid flight

    so i just started fishing a week ago and i noticed that my line wasn’t going far at all (like 20-25 ft) i think it might be the way it’s spooled but i have not idea. i’m using a cheap $80 abu gacia maxX w/ 20lb mono line. could you think of anything thats causing this? (edit) also notice that it stops casting at a certain distance, almost like im stopping it but im not.

      Could be spool tension knob (small round one under the star drag) is too tight. That's what it sounds like

    I was always told to adjust 2 brakes at a time that are opposite of one another for balance. But most all my reels have 6 brakes. Is this not necessarily true?

    What lb test would you suggest for my Curado DC paired with a 7’1 MHF rod for crankbait/glidebait in more open water? 12-15lb flouro ?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Glide baits need heavier line than crankbaits. I run 12-16 on my cranks depending on the cover and I run 20-25 on big swimbaits and glide baits depending on their size.. of you want to run one set up for both I would compromise in the middle but heavier fluoro will.dramatically affect your crankbaits running depth.

      @@JPDeRoseOutdoors Hi JP, just wanted to follow up. Been happy with the results I’ve had using 16# Sunlime Super FCSniper for throwing small hard swimbaits like the bucca bullshad up to an S Waver. I feel that 16# is too light for using jerkbaits, square bills and lipless cranks such as a Rat L Trap since at the end of my retrieve I always seem to find the lure at the surface. A second rod/reel setup with heavier flouro will have to wait at this time. Thank you as always for your input and advice!!

    With which rod can I throw the 20gr minnow lure farther? For saltwater. Baitcasting or spinning?

      Depending on your line most likely spinning. Especially if you are using lighter braid.

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      Best bet would be to see if there is a light weight aftermarket spool available for your reel. Lighter spools make casting lighter baits much easier!

      @@JPDeRoseOutdoors Ok thank you. What’s the average price on a lighter spool? Also would lowering my brakes help??

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      @@Vel_200 honestly have no idea as I have never changed a spool before. I have heard about these lighter spools but have zero experience with them. Lowering your braking will help with the lighter baits as well but you also increase the chance of backlash so you need to find the right balance for you and your setup

      Fill half the spool with braid backing. This will make your spool lighter and will give you faster startup speeds which equals longer casting distance. Plus when you go to replace line you won't be wasting so much because you're only filling up half the spool with usable line.

    How much does the position of the line guide affect casting distance?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      On casting rods it's negligible on spinning rods the distance and size of the first guide (the stripper guide) can affect the casting distance.

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому +2

      Lol. Just re read your comment and totally misinterpreted it. Sorry man! The line guide on the casting reels can effect the distance if they are at either end on wider spools but it is fairly negligible on the narrower 70, 150 and 200 size low profile reels from my experience.

    More bearings make it spin forever witch means it throws your line forever till it hits the water more bearings more speed farther casts and the roll dosnt stop

      There is no point in that until the brakes are so tight that it is restricting that cast even with ZERO brakes. Most people can’t cast with that low of a brake setting anyway. And your rod with only throw a lure so far (it’s called physics). I have measured it out with a line counter, I can make 55ish yard casts with my black max, with zero brakes, on a 1/2 oz squarebill.

    I average 100 feet with 15lb test mono. If I put on 30lb braid will I be able to cast 180 feet as well???

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      15lb test mono is equivalent to almost 65lb braid. If you switch to 30lb braid you will definitely gain casting distance but I would go down to 20lb braid to gain even more.

    Are you SURE everything is on the up and up?!?!?

    • @JPDeRoseOutdoors
      @JPDeRoseOutdoors  3 роки тому

      1000%. Think about the rotation of a spool versus diameter of the line. 65 lb braid is 0.016" diameter, 30 lb is 0.011" diameter. Makes a big difference when you travelled the same distance on a cast and your spool is still 40% full with the thinner line.

    • @binkwood
      @binkwood 3 роки тому

      Are you sure it isn't because of the color differences in the line and not the diameter? All kidding aside I resisted braid on spinning reels forever because I was just feeling "too much" and swinging on everything but man it's so much nicer not having to deal with line twist of fluorocarbon! Took me a bit to learn that damn FG knot but I'm good now. Keep up the good work
