I grew up during the TNN days. I waited all week for the weekend fishing shows when I was a kid. All of them were good but Roland and Bill Dance were the most entertaining by miles.
It’s fantastic to see how much this channel has grown is such a short period of time. I used to watch Roland when I was a kid with my papaw, so it’s great to see him return and use a medium of entertainment that I watch on a regular basis.

Ok, here it is. If you want to cast farther and stop the bait before it hits the rocks or trees or whatever, then simply cast hold the line at top of your spool. Not up to the base of the rod. Then , if you threw too far you can stop the bait from going into the structure your throwing at. Obviously a longer rod and braid will allow you to cast farther, but it's all about accuracy. Using your index finger to stop the line after you cast will give you pin point accuracy. Also will give you more distance on your cast. I'm surprised I haven't seen this technique before, but it's amazing. Works way better then holding the line up to the base of the rod. This way allows you to cast farther and you can stop the bait wherever your target is. Similar to a baitcaster. If you got baby hands it may not work . I'm shocked fisherman don't use this technique. I'm shocked fisherman don't use this technique. Way better. It's funny cuz my dad throws his baits in the shore, trees, bushes ect all the time. I tried to show him, but I guess you can't teach old dogs new tricks lol. I was taught this year's ago by a great guy who taught me how to fly fish with woolly buggers. If you used the same rod,reel, lure, and hook but different lines that would tell which line casts further. Longer rod with braid will always cast further than a shorter rod with mono.
I made my own flats rods from Salmon/Steelhead rod blanks. They are in the 8 1/2' to 10' range and many of the blanks are made for 8-17 lb test line so they are light enough for the flats. You can cast quite a long distance with those loaded with 10-15 pound braid!!!
Good technique two-hand casting Roland ...... I will try it when Redfishing at the beach around the Myrtle Beach area and when I bank fish for bass around the dam at High Rock NC and rip rap.......
Brother, as usual you just keep explaining more stuff to me when I was a kid I want fishing once and caught a pumpkin seed never cared fish again till recently and I’ve been watching your videos to knowledge you have is on real. I find that in Europe we usually use 240-270cm rods for sweetwater spinning and 300cm for seajigging and spinning, perhaps what you said is about boat fishing only
this is a great video. there are brands that sell "long casting" reels with expanded spools that lay the line a little more uniform and precise. Couple that with the newer thinner braids being sold and you can really get some distance on your cast, even with shorter rods. When I'm bass fishing, I need a shorter rod to help maneuver in over grown areas. Any bit of help in gear is a huge benefit.
Long roads have issues as well..like snagging stuff on the back cast. I prefer nothing over 6ft. Been snagged with hooks in boats from guys with long rods. It's not fun get a hook out buried in over the barb. Jmo
Why do you use a left hand handle with a spinning reel and I've noticed you use a right hand handle with a baitcasting reel? I've always used a spinning reel with a left hand handle & I'm considering purchasing a baitcasting reel. I was planning on getting a left hand handle, because that's what I'm used to. I'm sure you have a great reason for the change and would appreciate your insight.
Very informative video! I have always used 4 or 6 pound monofilament on my Daiwa BG 1500 spinning reel with a 7 foot rod. I finally decided to try it with braid. I put on 10 pound Power Pro braid since it has a lower diameter but it doesn't cast any farther. I filled the spooled up completely. Any ideas as to why it's not casting any further?
Thanks Roland. Good stuff! I have to say though, I’d never put 14 lb mono on a 2500 size reel. 10 lb is about as big as I’d go and that is even pushing it. In my experience the 14 lb wouldn’t perform well. Of course I use cheap mono, and you likely do not. 👍🏻
I tend to go with a heavier mono because I don't like fooling around with leaders. But you're correct, a 2500 spinning reel is suited for 6-10 lbs. If you want to compare distance from a line weight perspective obviously the braid will go further as it will be much thinner for the same weight class. Therefore the thickness or diameter of the braid and mono a little closer would be a more meaningful comparison.
I had a project trying to come up with a heavy duty, long casting bass rod. I put a 5000 size spinning reel an a 7 foot MH rod. "Line slap" was terrible. No distance at all. (Line slapping against the rod blank during the cast.) I had to drop down to a 4000 size reel. 5000 size reels for sale. LOL
I have complete opposite problem the shorter the rod the farther I cast out. I guess my style of casting is different then most. My 5ft or 5'6 rods I launch the bait, but 6'6 and up I tend to do the short rainbow cast
Can you do one on how the number of eyes effects the rod and the different types of eyes. I think I have a good idea how it works but I'm not 100% sure? Have you ever fished in Kansas if so how did like it and where at?I really like your videos.
Bank fishing, I ain't got no boat and I hate! When I cast and it only traves 30 yards or so. IV always thought smaller tackle (excluding bait)would help cast farther but who knows now. Heavy vs light line? Small vs large reel? 2000-3000 Longer rode seems to help but (stiff vs light) This is what I wanna know roland

I use 50lb braid on my bait-caster due to digging if to small of line. I love my bait-caster because i got a 1 ounce sinker on it because i fish for catfish with it i can legit throw 50 to 60 yards with it and im a bank fisherman i dont have a boat i wish i had a boat but they are to expensive for something that should be 3000$ instead they charge like 10k for it
Not quite an accurate comparison... you one handed the first cast... and two handed power cast the other two. Interested in seeing a two handed power cast on the first rod with mono..

The first point was confusing. That's not the best combo for "freshwater fishing" in general. It depends on what you want. Heavy lures do better with baitcasters for example.

No, I live in Florida, so I figured I should take up the hobby sense it’s available everywhere, especially here in Lake County

its all about getting used to it-- youll find that it will become second nature -- go with right hand handle for baitcasting

I'm a primarily a bank fisherman, long casts required most of the time, UNLESS the big fish are busting bait against the bank I'm standing on.

He should have used braid, mono, Fluoro on same size rods and reels to have a fair comparison
I was trying to show that many anglers make a mistake buy using one hand and Mono. The other 2 rods used braid!

When you fish from the bank you want to cast further out. When you fish from a boat you want cast further in.
