Being from Fife, going to the Anstruther Chippy nearly every week, I can't tell you how happy this makes me. My Grandad took me there for years, when I moved to England, he took my Gran every week, he was so loved there that the Manager and one of the staffeven came to his Funeral. I ate here a few years ago on a trip to Scotland and drove from Edinburgh just to eat here...and it brings back terrific memories. So happy for Anstruther Chippy. It was delicious. Thanks Gary.
Hi Gary, I believe you are the third reviewer at least to assess the Anstruther fish and chip bar. Every one of you gave the fish and chips 10/10. Thank you for visiting 👍
Hilariously, this is the closest we've seen Gary come to stunned speechless.... Honestly, it all looked absolutely great. And the scenery! Hats off to your costar, the seagull. He took a loss on the food, but he stole a bit of the scene, and he absolutely seized a talking role when he'd only been hired for a walk-on. Brilliant!
Scottish person here, and I know a chippy owner (from another Scottish award-winning establishment) and they told me a very interesting thing…. that is; at certain times of year and in certain locations the haddock eat a far higher proportion of prawns as part of their diet, and that (regardless of how they are cooked) makes a huge difference to the taste! In fact many (good) Scottish chippy owners will travel far and wide to procure the catches where the haddock have been eating prawn. (Don’t know how scientifically proven this is but I can attest to the amazing taste). Cheers!
Hey up mate even if that's an old wives tale is makes sense to me and after all it is nature's way, there's something similar with tree's, firewood and time of year
you have no idea how happy i am , my late mum used to love this chippy and always said it was the best ever as loved going there for their hols from kent, so glad you went after we all told you it was the best. dad ( 82) is going to be over the moon when he watches this and i bet he will shed a tear as he will be think of his wife and my mum. thanks 4 going.

I regularly travel from Edinburgh,50 miles, to go to Anstruther Fish bar…it is outstanding and easily my fav in whole of Uk and I have tried a lot. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Anstruther.
@@smoll.miniatures fish market at Newhaven is the best in Edinburgh albeit not quite as good as Anstruther. It is the light batter on the fish at Anstruther that separates it from others
Try port Seton for a change, or pop into Dickson's fish shop for top quality fish, they will always take all bones out of your salmon also. There's also a hotel in Lauder "Black bull " that serves excellent fish n chips.
I'm originally from Anstruther although I've lived in Edinburgh for almost a year now. Thanks for visiting - we're truly blessed to have 2 top tier chippies so close to each other!
Ex-chef here, I can see the batter is really light by the way it's uneven and kind of drip-shaped, I think that's definitely made with beer and/or sparkling water, nice and cold, that's the best way to get a light batter. Seriously impressed by seeing the name of the boat that brought the catch in too. Fish and chips has become a bit of a treat nowadays, not like when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. A couple of weeks ago I paid £14 for haddock and chips but it was in Soho, it wasn't bad - but that was £14 for just the fish and chips, no curry sauce or mushy peas - and I reckon the one you had was probably nicer. I'm having haddock and potatoes tonight but it's defrosted smoked haddock from Lidl, and new potatoes from Tesco, with peas, all of it with a lot of butter and probably dill on the potatoes, I'd honestly prefer to batter and fry the fish & potatoes as chips, but that's a bit messy and hard work for me as I would have to make the batter and deep fry it on the hob. Still looking forward to it.
Fish and Chips in Soho. The ultimate tourist trap destination, and I’m a Londoner. IMO the only place that did fish and chips in Soho was Dyonasis and that was a kebab shop. Best kebab’s I ever ate.
@@spaceodds1985 Yeah I know the thing is I was working there, in fact it was my last day there, in a shop; on Dean St, and normally I'd have had a meal deal from Tesco but decided to treat myself, as I hardly every have fish & chips nowadays.
@@harrykinskywalker3349 It was as it happens. I had to check first as I only went there once, and won't go again, as I no longer have any need or wish to go to Soho. It was perfectly fine, cooked to order, and the clientele was a mix of British people and tourists. I live in East Acton at the moment and don't know of any chippies around here, there are a couple further north next to Westway though.
Ah my home county of Fife. We used to put my elderly Nana in the car and taker her to Anstruther when the weather was nice and she always enjoyed her wee fish supper from the chippy while getting some lovely fresh air and looking at all the sailing boats in the harbour. Makes me homesick as I am now down south and the chips are soggy here 😐. Lovely review and glad you enjoyed them.
So so happy to see you've been to Anstruther, we absolutely love it there too. Beautiful place with the best fish and chips and lovely to see how much you enjoyed it!
Glad you enjoyed it Gary I live 20 miles north in Broughty Ferry and yes the Fish Suppers are wonderfull in Anstruther btw it's pronounced Anstr-other 😀
I was amazed that you didn't get surrounded by gulls but, of course, they make their presence felt in the end. What a lovely experience , two great chippy's in one video. Nice one Gary and congrats on the ever increasing subscribers.
Thank you, Gary. It's a pleasure to see top-notch food being seriously enjoyed. I showed a previous video of yours ( London Breakfasts ) to my 91-year-old father-you now have 2 more fans. Keep it up; you make our world a better place.
It certainly is , as a Southern Englishman I went as part of the “ League of London Club head chefs “ too Dumfries, I stupidly wore a jumper with an English Flag 🏴 embroidered on my chest , and went too a local Night club “ chancers “ 1 pound entry fee , get the picture ! , as fights broke out left right and centre , I remained unhurt , the locals too busy buying me drinks and calling me “ Big Man “ I had a blast , and I have always had a huge soft spot for Scotland ever since those wonderful days in the mid nineties.😊Scotland rocks .
It's rare for the "Best fish & chip shop in Britain" to be that good. Glad this one delivered. When the fish has just come off the boat across the road, it has to be good because fresh is best. It is no coincidence that the best chippys are right by the sea. As for the "scrag ends". I used to love getting a bag of bits from my local chippy (for free) as that was batter just chucked away.
Once again, I am nearly drooling! As the only one in the family who likes fish, every time you do a fish and chips video, I cry a little inside. I adore fish and haven't cooked nor eaten it in decades because of my finicky family. If I had the chance to try either of these establishments I'm sure I would tear up with joy! Thank you for your sweet, honest, enjoyable video. It was wonderful seeing your speechless response to the excellence of the food. You are a treasure!😊❤
@GaryEats.....the look of awe on your face as to you tasting that fish is tantamount to the expression on our son's face when he was 6 years old and we took him to Disneyworld in Florida at the Magic Kingdom. Fantastic review sir. Good to know fish and chips (the good stuff) is still available on either side of the pond!
We used to stay in Anstruther when I was a kid. Wonderful place. My dad even did a beautiful oil painting of the harbour which hung on our wall for years so we looked at the place everyday. Will have to return for some fish and chips.
as a child our family used to holiday regularly holiday in nearby Elie and it was always the highlight of our break to be treated to a fish supper from Anstruther. Very happy memories!!
Fresh, quality fish, fresh mushy peas and Scottish Piper spuds are a guaranteed successful meal. 10/10 for managing the seagulls. 10/10 for the food.👍👍👍
Thank you Gary for going there (as per my request) ❤ appreciate it I told you Gary … it is the best … you will cry … it’s joyful … it’s like a childhood memory !!! Anstruther is the best!!! Whitby… Yorkshire… hah!
Love it all! Just watching Gary trying to get across the road and get into the ‘plaice’ is entertaining enough. Thanks to CM for keeping Gary on the straight and narrow 😅. Loved that crunch. I wanted to run up behind you and grab the box and I’m not the seagull. Fab video 😍

Not far from where I grew up! Lovely part of the world and some great food around the east coast. You’ll eat the very best fish around the east coast. Thank you for showcasing Scotland Gary. Makes me a little homesick watching you there while I’m in Warwickshire 😊xx
Hi Gary! What a lovely & peaceful looking area on the coast of Scotland. I've seen you review some fantastic fish + chips on the channel before... & some duds, but I've never seen you quite so gob-smacked by how good this was at Anstruther Fish Bar. The beef dripping must play a big part & it was great to see how much you enjoyed it. The Wee Chippy presentation looked better I thought when you first opened the box, though overall not quite a perfect 10, but close. They certainly know how to do it in that neck of the woods! Your reviews in Scotland have been brilliant Gary & Mr C. Better than anything I would have otherwise watched on the tele! 😊 Safe travels & see you next time. 💙💐
Thank you very much, really appreciate it... the Wee Chippy certainly had more colour but Anstruther's batter... wow. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment as always!
Hi Gary, I’m so glad you enjoyed them both and they didn’t disappoint. We stay 50 miles away from Anstruther and thoroughly enjoy a wee day trip up there for fish and chips - they’re the best I’ve tried……. Please keep up the good work 👍
What a beautiful fishing village. I must admit that freshly caught fish eaten beside the sea always tastes better. Wow the first fish and chips looked superior, loved the lighter batter and nice sized chips. The wee chippy batter looked denser and as you said slightly greasy. Another great video Gary, have a great weekend xx
The best two chippers ever! The Anstruther also has AMAZING ice cream 🤤 You’re the nicest fella on UA-cam and we’re so happy the algorithms brought us to you. Even your comment sections are always so lovely 😅❤
When I first came to live in Fife 25 years ago, someone recommended the Anstruther Fish Bar, so I popped in when walking along the coastal path. Just like Gary, it was such a wonderful and surprising revelation how delicious the Fish and Chips were - also the best I’ve ever had!
The Scots do fish and chip shops so well. My father in law is from Lossiemouth. The chippies around there are very strong. And of course deep fried mars bars/creme eggs, etc. Lovely.
Hey Gary, Congratulations on this great review. Really enjoyed the fact you ate just by the sea harbour (perfect setting) tasting & consuming possibly one of the best Fish & Chips you ever had! Kudos to Anstruther Fish & Chips AND The Wee Chippy 👌🏽
@RockerMark .........You will love visiting Fife ........Recommend St. Andrews (expensive).......and Falkland Village and Palace are amazing (like stepping back in time)........and if you fancy a trip to Dundee its a short trip over the Tay Road Bridge (toll free) or head to Broughty Ferry and try Murrays for fish n chips (one of best in area)
Let’s be honest Yorkshire or any where in England are not in the same league as Anstruther. I live about an hour away from there but many people drive over to get their fish and chips . Thanks for making the effort to travel up here. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Gary Lucky residents of Ansthruther! To have at least 2 fish and chips of that quantity is fantastic. A really good fish and chips meal is a great thing to behold. I agree entirely with your scores on this one and it inspired me to cook my own fish and chips tonight (just finished it). I don’t mind different size of chips as they can bring different textures to the dish. Brill video as always mate
@@Kty27-65good memories of those newspaper wrapped fish & chips. I remember tearing into them and they were steaming hot and crisp. A bit of vinegar and salt and there was nothing nicer. It’s been years, and I’m not even in the UK any longer, but the memory is there like it was yesterday.
@cheshirecat7132 I'm no longer in the UK either, i haven't had decent fish and chips since 2017 !!!!! I just so remember sitting on the sea front, in the car because it was usually raining 😅, with my parents and siblings, munching away....... I can still taste them now ☺️
Thank you Gary, Cameraman, and Seagull. A fab review, and the most beautiful scenery ❣️ Proud of you for using the zebra crossing on such a busy road🤣❤
I’m extremely happy to you do Anstruther Fish Bar. I know I keep commenting about it on your videos. I love it and was here on Monday AND Tuesday last week for fish and chips. Comparing places we have both been to (Whitby various and Murgatroyd’s) I call this the best. It edges out Murgatroyd’s, which is some achievement. Such a beautiful harbour and was cracking weather to have a walk around.
@ glad you both enjoyed it. I had the “Big ‘un” at Murgatroyd’s, which was great. You will likely end up sharing it due to the size. I had fetched a car from Ormskirk so I saved some fish for my mum. I often am tempted to go even though they are over 2 hours away. If Fife wasn’t 6 hours I’d be there every week.
I saw another review of these places a few weeks ago, and decided I’d treat myself. I’d use my free bus pass to get there from Edinburgh. But ….it takes 3 hours each way ! You make it sound like it might be worth it ! Cheers Gary.
Hi Gary chap, lovely review up in Scotland…”what can I say”…you can’t beat Fish n Chips ….looked bloody scrumptious 👌👌😋😋 nicely cooked..10/10 from me chap…Enjoy the weekend 😎
I can’t believe how clear the audio was - I feel like if I’d filmed by the coast in Scotland it would have been mainly wind on the soundtrack!! Love you Gary & cameraman. Seeing you happy makes me happy!
Hi Gary. Wow. As a Yorkshireman proud of his counties’ fish and chips, this takes some swallowing. I fully agree with your comments on the southern version. Living in London, the quality is here if you know where to look, but the taste is not the same. Not even close. So I now regard them as two distinct dishes. However, I do respect your reviews. I’m also magnanimous enough to accept the lucky residents of Anstruther may have two of the finest chippies in the UK. Indeed, fine fish and chips, haddock cooked as it should be, is always cause for celebration.
That is a wonderful comment, and I really appreciate it, I really think that both fish and chip chops were amazing, however I still think the fish and chip shops in Yorkshire are amazing as are the people
Thank you not only from myself but also my mum who has terminal cancer and has been following your journey since you started the vlogs, you are one in a million with your level headed views when reviewing establishments. If it’s possible can you give a mention for my mum Janet in the same way that James from bythecurb did and also St Christopher of Atlantis, it would mean the world to mum (if it’s not possible it’s ok), once again thanks for the videos and hope you have a good Christmas x
Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear about your mother. I’m honoured and overwhelmed to hear that she enjoys the videos and that I’ve been able to help. Have a lovely Christmas, can you send me an email at contact@garyeats.com?
How lucky are the folks living in Anstruther to have not one but two award winning Fish and Chip shops. Great review again Gary thank you. I loved the light batter on the haddock it looked just the way I like my fish. I think you are going to be hard pushed now to find better takeaway fish and chips in the UK.
There also used to be the very best ice cream -from the same location. It was owned by the Brattesani family, and the ice cream was the best I've ever tasted. It was always served at Sunday School Parties and such in Anstruther. It was one of the haunts of our High School (Waid Academy) pupils!
Hi gary I believe the Scots call it a fish supper!! Especially at nite. The fish looked absolutely amazing. The best fish I ever had was in lowestoft at a place called the Hatfield....it was like the fish jumped out out the water and onto my plate ! Onto my plate . Another fantastic review......we love Scotland ❤❤
Many holidays have been spent in and around Anstruther since childhood. I introduced my kids to the area and they loved it. As adults they haven't quite got round to going back yet but as they have very young babies just now, I can see them going as the kids grow. Our weekly treat was the Anstruther Fish Bar, then another day would be 'picnic'things we made and a visit to one of the local Ice cream parlours, there used to be a fantastic green grocers in Anstruther and their fruit (and veg) was so fresh and delicious. We had a couple of' pub meals' which were OK and Cafe lunches..... Kids were never bored even if it rained or a bit 'stormy'... They were used to doing wet weather picnics on the west coast of Scotland. Thank you for sharing the review, maybe get husband to go a drive!!! Also bringing back fab memories....
I really have to agree with this, I don't watch any other food reviewers, none of them can hold my attention for long, Rate My Takeaway is just annoying and nothing gets remotely close to the content Gary regularly gives us
Anstruther fish is the clear winner! While they both looked good Anstruther had some details that I would favor, the first being cooking in beef tallow really ads flavor, second the batter was crispy but not greasy and thirdly the chips where proper chips not a bunch of scraggly small pieces. Definitely a 10* Like you said had you tried Wee Chippy on it's own you would have been delighted but in comparison it is lacking to Anstruther. Gary really enjoyed the review and your bravery in fighting off a hunger seagull....🤣 Cheers.
Essex Bloke here. Had many a holiday on that east coast area...Anstruther and Pittenweem...It's a long time back but I'm sure my wife and l visited that Chippy..... Lovey area...to visit, to photograph, to dine of fresh fish.....Your enthusiasm makes me want to jump on a plane.....
I grew up in Pittenweem, and it used to have a great chippy too. (Used to get a 2d bag of chips there after Brownies!) Sadly, it was closed after a fire, fairly recently, and I don't know if it has ever been re-opened.
Gary, your reviews are hugely entertaining. Down here in Australia and wishing I was in Anstruther right now! It was mouthwatering just watching you have the first fish n chips! I watch a lot of food reviews and you are one of the best! Keep up the great work mate!
Gary, my Australian stepdaughter will be visiting us here in the UK - including Edinburgh - next year, so I’m sending her the link to this review. She’ll love this place. Brilliant stuff as usual. Thanks so much.
Conversing with the food again 😅. I am so hungry for fish and chips now lol, unfortunately, no good ones around me. Food done with care, always tastes better. I would prefer the first one as that batter looked lovely and light like a tempura. Thank you for your wit and charm yet again, and the camera man's usual greatness too!
It is worth repeating: The best fish & chips are cooked in lard and made from locally sourced fish and hand cut chips. My dad, who sold fish always believed that North Sea fish was the best - what a really brilliant touch naming the fishing boats. Also, the Fife coast is fabulous and, of course, includes St Andrews.
Good honest review as always, I was in Edinburgh at Easter , and just never found the time to get to Anstruther dissapointingly, happy to live vicariously through your reviews, and now know to make the journey next time x

Wow they must've been good to beat Yorkshire and Whitby Gary, and what generous portions from both. Anstruther is so beautiful too. Fab review as ever ❤😊
We visited last summer and being disabled ate inside at both , tried Anstruther fish and chips on the first day and in all honesty thought they were just average and over hyped but it was exceptionally busy being the height of season. On recommendation from a local we opted for the Wee chippy the following evening and were utterly delighted we'd actually found the best chippy , under the same pressure as the rated one but they delivered....glad you enjoyed them both mate 👍
Hi Gary, I’m from Yorkshire, but lived in St Andrews for a few years. Anstruther fish Bar was a regular visit for us, the batter as you say is so lite. Scotland has some fabulous chippys, and generally always haddock, which I prefer. The Tail End in St Andrews is also fantastic.

In fact many (good) Scottish chippy owners will travel far and wide to procure the catches where the haddock have been eating prawn. Aye but these two chippies don't. They buy fresh as the catch comes into the harbour. I heard roomers they both own the boat. LOL
I used to travel to the Philippines regularly. November was the month the fish were known to be “fat”. The tuna and sea urchin was always good.
Makes sense. Rabbits, grouse deer etc are all tastier when they've been feeding well in the summer rather than after a harsh winter.
Interesting. thank you for that
you have no idea how happy i am , my late mum used to love this chippy and always said it was the best ever as loved going there for their hols from kent, so glad you went after we all told you it was the best. dad ( 82) is going to be over the moon when he watches this and i bet he will shed a tear as he will be think of his wife and my mum. thanks 4 going.

I regularly travel from Edinburgh,50 miles, to go to Anstruther Fish bar…it is outstanding and easily my fav in whole of Uk and I have tried a lot. I’m glad you enjoyed your trip to Anstruther.
Fishmarket in edin is close but just doesn’t have the view
You are very lucky to live only an hour away!
There’s loads of decent chippies in Edinburgh and surrounding areas to be fair. But yeah if I’m ever in Anstruther it’s the place tae go.
Which is your favourite? 😅
They aint top tier Alexander, Troon / west coast chippys clear.
You are very lucky Alexander
Wow, looked tasty !!👍👍
I like the scrag ends. The crunchy bits. They both looked lovely.
It adds a bit of crunch and texture, Chris
Yea, I prefer the "scraggy" bits too.
At the Wee Chippy this weekend - was deeelicious, scrag ends and all - yum!
Simon that's the best story I've heard in my life thank you
Fish and Chips in Soho.
@@simonh6371was it Hobson’s by any chance?
That's an amazing story. I really appreciate that, thank you very much
So so happy to see you've been to Anstruther, we absolutely love it there too. Beautiful place with the best fish and chips and lovely to see how much you enjoyed it!
I got the bus there yesterday from just outside edinburgh, because I fancied some fish and chips - throw in a pint next door and all was well.
I loved it Sarah, brilliant!
Anstruther reminds me very much of Grimsby. Which despite it's name is a beautiful little fishing village with a really good harbour.
Beautiful fish and chips, can taste them, lovely place. Thank you for a lovely review.❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it Gary I live 20 miles north in Broughty Ferry and yes the Fish Suppers are wonderfull in Anstruther btw it's pronounced Anstr-other 😀
Thank you 👍
I was amazed that you didn't get surrounded by gulls but, of course, they make their presence felt in the end. What a lovely experience , two great chippy's in one video. Nice one Gary and congrats on the ever increasing subscribers.
I paid them off luckily
When we visited the lack of gulls was a real bonus. We ate our food without hassle.
Brilliant quality and brilliant hosting...bravo Gary.

It is very rare for both places to be so good, but on this occasion, I was very happy Steve
Can't get fresher than that Gary. Thanks for the reviews, so pleased you enjoyed it, looks sensational!!!
It was certainly very fresh, Malcolm
Once again, I am nearly drooling! As the only one in the family who likes fish, every time you do a fish and chips video, I cry a little inside.

What a beautiful fishing village. I must admit that freshly caught fish eaten beside the sea always tastes better. It's so good!
Lovely.
Aye they certainly do, the Welsh also are masters of the Fish n Chip craft. Both countries absolutely blow England out the park for chippies imo
They do it very well!

Hi Gary
Lucky residents of Ansthruther!

Really really appreciate that, thank you Adam. I think it edges them out but I do need to try the jumbo at Murgatroyds at some point!

Hi Gary.

There also used to be the very best ice cream -from the same location. It was owned by the Brattesani family, and the ice cream was the best I've ever tasted. It was always served at Sunday School Parties and such in Anstruther. It was one of the haunts of our High School (Waid Academy) pupils!

Fantasic video Gary. Perfect stress relief after a busy week. Two 10* in a row, very happy for you.
I hope you have a wonderful and stressfree weekend and thank you
Many holidays have been spent in and around Anstruther since childhood.
Hopefully this brought you back some wonderful memories and the family as well Liz

Well said. I think the batter had nice bubbles which gave it an extra crunch!
Gary pulls it out the bag again .... always a cheeky surprise video .... "Gary" ! .... 😘

Well said David, fantastic comment
David, it’s not lard…..that’s pig fat. Dripping is what they are cooked in ( beef fat ).

Sorry to hear that. Maybe they get too busy and it causes quality to decrease
@@GaryEats ...our thoughts exactly.
Hi Gary,
I’m from Yorkshire, but lived in St Andrews for a few years. Anstruther fish Bar was a regular visit for us, the batter as you say is so lite. Scotland has some fabulous chippys, and generally always haddock, which I prefer. The Tail End in St Andrews is also fantastic.
Thank you for the recommendation Simon
Always happy to drive from Edinburgh a couple of times a year to the Anstruther Fish Bar, passing many chippies on the way.
