That sounds good on the surface but humans are naturally tool using creatures. So many of the activities that we do involve using tools. With the wii you're holding a very basic object in your hand so it's easy to imagine it as what you need.
One of my friends got the Kinect for Christmas but his parents didn’t realize you need the 360 as well to actually play the games. Laughed at him for a whole year.
Prower's Edits that’s too funny. Now that I think about it the ads weren’t in your face clear that it was an add on so I’ll bet a lot of parents probably did that. No wonder I still bump into them new at thrift shops sometimes
Ironically, the Kinect is by far the coolest video-game accessory for non-gaming applications. It's quite a capable depth camera that can be found for very low prices, so it's found its way into no end of amazing interactive art exhibits and the like.
Not really. The camera was pretty good at the time but the it was over engineered for something they wanted to be "basic" which caused it to be overpriced being half the 360's price. All the motion tracking was done via software and it had no depth sensory, so its hard for it to be called amazing, but its definitely a cool accessory to look back on. I know I'll get criticism from this reply but its how I see things.
It does in fact have a legit depth camera - I've used it and it's pretty good at its job. All the pose tracking is done on the Xbox, but you can hook it up to a Raspberry Pi with a USB adapter and get a very usable 240p depth image straight out of the box. It definitely wasn't worth the price at launch but these days it's a great deal.
@@dotdotmod but thats wrong. "The depth and motion sensing technology at the core of the Kinect is enabled through its depth-sensing. The original Kinect for Xbox 360 used structured light for this: the unit used a near-infrared pattern projected across the space in front of the Kinect, while an infrared sensor captured the reflected light pattern. The light pattern is deformed by the relative depth of the objects in front it, and mathematics can be used to estimate that depth based on several factors related to the hardware layout of the Kinect. While other structure light depth-sensing technologies used multiple light patterns, Kinect used as few as one as to achieve a high rate of 30 frames per second of depth sensing"
I have too many memories of my friend screaming “XBOX” while wailing their hand in front of the console….it was stressful finding that moment when to just hand them the controller.
My brother's ex wife had a very thick southern accent so it couldn't register what she was saying. She would say "eyaxbawx" 30 times and get pissed when nothing happened.
Throwback to when me and my cousin traded our Kinectimals Cat back and forth, one would play with it while the other would pretend to be at some business adult job, and the Cat was like our child I guess.
So Kinect is good for two things: - Dancing games, as it tracks all of your body - Children games for really young children Edit: - Exercising with tracking
Man, I can remember when the Kinect came out. Every Xbox owner tried to justify its existence, pretend it was great and that it would CRUSH Nintendo. While it did sell well at first (mostly on manufactured hype), the fact that they were fearfully forced to rip it out of the Xbox One speaks volumes. If Microsoft had been smart, they would've just waited until One to introduce the Kinect. Nintendo waited until the Wii to introduce motion controls, as they were originally planning to release for the Gamecube. Luckily they avoided that disaster, Microsoft... not so much.
Let's be fair here, the Kinect for the XBOX One was forcibly removed due to privacy concerns and an outrage over always online. It was a technical improvement over the original, but sadly, being a good product is nothing when you don't have the software to back it up, and with the bad rep Kinect got its first time around and with the privacy concerns the 2nd time, Microsoft just decided to drop it so its support kept dropping until Kinect disappeared from the XBOX namesake forever.
The Kinect required you to move your body. The Wii controllers on the other hand used gyros. You can use the motion controls easily while sitting down and making small gestures. Cameras in general aren't a good idea.
One thing I’ve found funny about Kinect’s technology is that it was way more useful to the medical industry than it is for gaming. Being able to do things without touching anything is surprisingly useful when you’re trying not to contaminate anything in an operating theater.
When me and my friend were younger I always went to his house and he had a kinect but instead of playing games we would beat the hell out of each other until one of us were the only green figure on the screen
I enjoyed Skyrim with the Kinect, nothing quite screamed (quite literally) "I'm a loser" like yelling out a dragon shout in dragon tongue and having your character use said shout.

I remember back in middle school when a few people were telling me that Kinect Star Wars would cause the Kinect to domiante the Nintendo Wii. I laugh at them to this very day.
With me I only remember 1 guy having kinect and they saw it all as just a fun toy. That was what it was for most people. Just toy that was a fun option if you happened to own a 360. However nobody bought the 360 for kinect. After all why would you do that if the Wii can do pretty much all the same things but costs less than half as much and has much more party games. There wasn't much mockery of the Wii though. Most accepted the Wii for what it was. A fun toy for things like Smash bros, Mario kart and other multiplayer games. It was pretty much the same reputation that the N64 had.
At the end of the day the only thing Kinect was and is still good for is Dancing games. After trying something like Just Dance on the Kinect the other versions feel really lame, as you only need to move your arm.. and not even in the correct way. The Kinect tracks your whole body, so dancing and doing it right is pretty rewarding. I know not many people are into those kind of games, but they are a really fun way to exercise and are great party games when friends come over.
Whenever my friends and I played Star Wars Kinect, we'd actually hold wii remotes in our lightsaber hands. In hindsight it kinda defeats the purpose, doesn't it?
It is insane how the Kinect is still one of the best AR cameras ever made and smart people have made it into a legitimately useful and powerful tool in science and engineering fields. But the people using it as proprietary hardware to make games couldn't really put anything together.
It's not one of the best of anything. However it's really affordable since its a consumer electronic which hardware like that typically is definitely not.
3:50 "Project Natal". About that weird name that made Microsoft Product Naming Specialists go "sure", it has a fun fact behind it. The main engineer/designer for the Kinect was a guy named Alex Kipman, a Brazilian electronic engineer that grew up in a city named "Natal". Natal is the capital of a Brazilian state located in the Northeast region of Brazil, called Rio Grande do Norte, and Alex decided to name Kinect after the city he grew up in. Natal also means "Christmas" in Portuguese, and Natal is known in Brazil for having beautiful Christmas parties. Even though naming a high-tech videogame camera after your city is cute, it's probably for the best the final name was "Kinect". Imagine naming your videogame creation "Project New York City". XD
It uses goodness there and cussing in the rest of the clip. Quite the juxtaposition. Is it different characters? Like that one watches his language (which I totally can respect) and the others don't care?

Man I have so many memories of Kinect! My after school care would have these Fun Friday’s where we had different stations around the school. It went outside, snack, homework time, outside again, then we would come in for a second snack! During that we had a option of either snacking normally OR going into this big area. Usually they would have a movie playing while we ate. But on those special days where gods would bless us, they had video games. The Wii, Xbox Kinect, PS 3 and 4?! It was my first introduction into the world of video games! Plus they were played on the huge projector screens my cafeteria had? It was so big and giant to 5-8 year old me. I loved it! I miss those days.
Playing Dance Central 3 with my friends was one of the most fun moments I ever had playing videogames, and for that reason the kinect will always have a special place in my heart.
Fun fact: the company that developed the technology in the Kinect, PrimeSense, later got bought out by Apple, who later used that technology to develop Face ID in the iPhone X and later.
I love the kinect, and it's stop a staple of the family Christmas to this day. The era of motion control was the best era for me, personally. You had all the traditional games, plus new styles. I'm very disappointed it was abandoned, rather than perfected.
I have such great memories playing Kinect Sports with my friend after schoom nearly everyday. He’d come round to mine and we’d just play it for hours. I remember how pissed I would get when he always beat me at Track and Field. Good times...
I feel like Kinect, with all it's jank and few good use cases, paved the way for consumer VR. A lot of things I saw on Kinect back in the day are making their way onto VR. A lot of concepts initially made for Kinect are in VR as well, heck even Fruit Ninja and Dance Central have VR versions. It's an interesting connection to make, especially when you're someone who's a big fan of modern VR.
A lot of things originally made for the WiiU are being adapted for the Switch, but that doesn't change the fact that the WiiU was a grave miscalculation.
i used kinect as a headtracker for a racing sim, now i use vr for the same end. yeah kinect feels like a predecessor to mainstream vr. thing is i used a VR headset for the first time almost 20 years before kinect came out. I'll never forget playing Dark Forces in VR. I waited 30 years to be able to do that at home properly (i'm sorry but every gen 1 vr headset sucked so much that i'm not going to count them. quest2 is the first good VR headset. being wireless is super important, in fact, a must-have)
Fun fact: Kinect still lives in the form of Azure Kinect and is used in research, science, logistics and various industries, particularly focusing on AI and robotis. Thats because at its core the original Kinect was a cheap depth camera which didn't require a tracker apparatus. This was a HUGE deal for universities, independent artists and startups, so much so they quickly started to hack into it to expand its usability. MS first tried to stop it but then realized they can gain more from it and released the original Kinect SDK, then in 2019 revamped the thing as Azure Kinect. It's funny how multi million dollar game dev failed to find use of it while cash strapped engineers and scientists turnt it into a powerfool tool.
I'm ecstatic that you mentioned the old Steel Battalion! I had the "pleasure" of testing 8 or so of those massive controllers and on a 13 or so inch TV. Yeah, that was an interesting version of HELL!
My own opinion with the Kinect is basically “Oh yeah, that existed” I don’t hate it, Kinect Adventures was kinda fun, and Dance Central was decent. All around a “eh” addition
17:25 funniest part of the video for me. "Oh my goodness, he's fixing to kill us! Whoa! You go that far and it ain't funny anymore." Blows everybody up anyways.

Pssst, kinect can be used as a way to get fully body tracking without trackers on you
@@finmueller7827 mine's currently shipping, I'm excited!

Oh god HOW?
Kinect 2.0
The Kinect's still around today: HoloLens basically has a Kinect 4 embedded in the headset.
