Guys I get it, I was wrong about The Predator. 😅This video came out 2 YEARS before that film released. And yes, Prey is the best sequel - I wish the Predator itself had a little more moment-to-moment character; think him looking around the trap and not going in whilst Arnie is yelling "come on, I'm here" - Hall's performance as the Predator in the first film just came out more. There was also a lack of gore, for me. It was nice to see lots of BLOOD, but guts and gore (and general getting human trophies) was a little lacking, plus the CG didn't help. That said, it's a great small scale, intense flick with a simple, uncomplicated story. The final fight was a little confused second-to-second, but it all came together really well. Big fan.
I didn't dislike the movie the predator all that much it was ok, more watchable that AvP. What I didn't like was how much comedy was written Into the script, way too much comedy. And let's face it, the action stars of today aren't even close to the guys in the 80s in terms of masculinity. The only writer that can recreate the feeling of 80s action movies is stallone. Rambo last blood was awesome.
Prey is purely shitty feminism movie. Do u think a predator can be killed with just bow and arrow. They totally shifted the predator franchise. Prey is good for 2k pussies not for 90s kids who watched real predator
@@marcusfossa6695 yes.. if something girl do like a man in the movie.. these men will lck her a*s like a slave… that movie is really shit but they are over hyping the movie..
One thing I love about this movie is that Schwarzenegger actually plays a *smart* character. Dutch is able to deduce quite a lot on very little information. He figures out the predator's tactics and motives, despite having no obvious analogue, and the cat and mouse game at the end where he basically single handedly sets up an anti-predator fun house with nothing more than a knife and a bit of boy scout ingenuity.
It makes sense considering he plays the commanding officer of the group. It's probably the most cerebral role you could cast a guy that looks like Arnold in, and have it be believable. Well aside from the Terminator which is smart because it's a computer. lol
I agree. IMO is maybe one of the bests (if not the best) Schwarzenegger roles ever. Although he has some memorable unintentionally funny lines as in other movies ("GET TO THE CHOPPA!!"), I also think he overall did a good acting work there.
Totally agree. I also like that with this role, and against the T-1000, his huge physique didn't mean jack as he was completely overpowered both times.
+NavySharkz One of the things that really helped to make the "Predator" character so memorably imposing and terrifying is how well done is the contrast between him and Dutch. The fact that a man in his peak physique is not able to hurt a Yautja in the slightest with his own strength tells a lot of how superior those monsters are to an human being.
The thing that stuck with me was that Arnold didn't walk off into the sunset with a girl at his arm and a witty line. He was happy just to be breathing at the end.
and the men weren't mistreating her, she wasn't an annoying chatterbox, she didn't fly the chopper out of there and kill the predator because girls can do everything boys can do etc.
You could even subtract the "happy" part. He's got the 1,000 yard stare and is not even acknowledging anyone who is around him. He's totally gutted, metaphorically. He's lost all his team, which were like his family. He's lost a good friend in Dillon. And he barely escaped with his life fighting a creature no one will believe ever existed.
What I really like about this movie is that all the characters (Arnold included) are scared and frightened. They don’t play heros, they fear their enemy
Agreed. By that time, we had all those action heroes from other movies. The first action sequence establish these characters as this kind of badass soldiers. Then the Predator comes in, and these guys are TERRIFIED. Makes you wonder what kind of horror could scare a squad of Rambos.
Mid 80's was a great time for action movies; this gem,Terminator, Robocop, Die Hard, Aliens and most notably none were watered down for a PG certificate.
Why is it so good: 1.) Arnold 2.) The other guys, all like action figueres 3.) Quotes you will remember 4.) A good monster seen late and rare 5.) Heat signature vision 6.) Cloaking device 7.) Not tons of computer shit that ruins it 8.) Believable setting and story 9.) Not putting Arnold in the focus 10.) Not these kind of happy-ending-movies 11.) A cast of known actors that do not try to wipe the others out 12.) A movie you can show your girl, until even she tries to make the predator sound or remembers it when you do it 13.) Its always a nice gift on DVD for a man 14.) The music, man 15.) Al Bundy recommended it
Two questions people often ask themselves when watching Predator these days. "Why is it so good?" "Why does it keep getting better with age?" That is a sign of a true classic.
I love it more now than ever.. Tightly executed awesomeness. That blend of War-film / sci-fi / horror ..and PERFECT casting from top- to bottom. DAMN! !! the movie still has me hyped up.. what was that like 1988?
Agree, this movie, is one of the best movies I ever seen, this, terminator, the thing, aliens, scarface and many more 80's movies are masterpieces. I wish I was born in the 80's, many nowadays movies aren't this good, even the nowdays songs.
What I love most about Predator is its subversion of what we expect from an action film. We have this group of super masculine, confident manly men. Body building commandos able to destory a compound of drug runners like its nothing, carrying big guns and tearing through people. And when faced with Predator they don't stand a chance. He is bigger than them, he is stronger than them, he is a more efficient killer than them. He reduces one to a terrified mess, traumatizing him. Predator picks them off one by one, but that's just because it wants to. It was clear he could easily destroy all of them, besting their best efforts to trap him. It was only until Dutch's entire team died that he was able to find a way to fight Predator, and that was through a sheer accident when he was covered with mud, giving him a way to fight back. Excellent movie, my favorite Action movie of all time.
So the predator played off their stupidity and weakness, picking them off and messing with them to drive them into paranoia, but it fucked up because it underestimated Dutch's cunning wit. Dutch was always observant and methodical, keeping a level head and figuring shit out before everyone else. Its like he was studying the creature even while it was attacking them. Thats freaking genius.
And better yet: Dutch "won" not because his hardness and strength, but because his flexibility, intelligence and willfulness to adapt. Such a great movie
and I still think in the final showdown when Arnold lights the torch and let's out his yell to summon the predator to battle....is still one of, if not the best battle cry in cinema.
No. The simplest explanation is that predator is a great idea but only has a shelf life of one film, like Jaws and Jurassic Park and Blair Witch Project
Most of the people doesn’t understand what you mean. Modern times people don’t know what “care” about what you are doing means. They think they do but they don’t.
That score when they are showing Arnold and the Pred preparing for the final showdown, slowly building up to the scene where Arnold lights the torch and screams is a pure eargasm it's so good!
I agree, it never gets old no matter how many times you watch it. Only Shane Black's glasses and the team's civies in the beginning draw attention to the fact that it's an 80s film.
jerry trejo Kind of ironic that the guy who played the character that makes stupid jokes for most of his screen time would make a predator movie filled with stupid jokes.
It's really good because the commandos don't do anything stupid in the whole film. They are the ultimate badasses that earth has to offer and they are still no match for the predator. It's annoying when the protagonists in films get caught in situations through sheer stupidity.
They litter and leave their equipment and clothing behind that's pretty stupid (it's a long term thing that dosen't effect the movie but defiently effects things latter).
maxcoseti billy knew he was gonna die. He died on HIS terms in effect. And his dying bought the others some more time. His death fits in with the mindset of the tight knit group being portrayed.
“You’re bleeding” “I ain’t got time to bleed” “Huh? Okay. You got time to duck?” Classic. Not to mention, it’s the only film in history to star TWO future Governors.
one thing that blows my mind about predator is how good the predator looks at the end. Only certain 80's movies could really pull off practical effects.
@Billy Hill .. Totally agree with ya Man, they lost the plot of Stan's original concept of the creature and came out with some really stupid looking Predator designs thereby ruining pretty much the Predator Story-Franchise .. .
80’s practical effects are the fucking best. I’m not even trying to be one of those “I was born in the wrong generation” retards. They always just looked so good and it’s a fact that good practical effects are arguably even better than good CGI.
They couldn't make this movie today, the black actors wouldn't be allowed to be killed off, the girl they saved would have to be a transgender non binary. They would need a certain percentage of female actors as to not exclude anyone also more nationalities. The camp they eliminated would also not work, I mean do we simply assume only south American nationalities would be in a south American jungle "extremely stereotypical racial profiling" a big no no with today's left leaning woke actor's
@@williambaxter8663 Literally can’t think of any modern action movie that checks all those boxes, but okay. Whatever keeps you hating on people that are different from you and that gives you something to be angry at I guess.
Fun fact in "Die Hard", in the scene where Hans is dropped from the window (his death), Alan Rickman was actually dropped from a significant height. He was told there would be a countdown to the fall but they dropped him early on purpose, so the look of panic and shock on his face was very real.
We all have fond memories of "Predator". One of the coolest factors for me was: what started out as a "POW"-type movie went completely LEFT FIELD and became an "E.T. from Hell" survival flick. Very cool twist that movies of today don't bother with.
Yeah you really get the feeling that it was meant to be enjoyed at it's fullest if you went into it expecting a Rambo clone, and walked out thinking wtf was that! I dunno but it was awesome!
And it is true with all the ingredients that could've made it more trash It definitely surprised a lot of people !! with possibly one of the coolest deadliest villains in the SCI-FI pantheon!! enjoy!
When you pointed out that a 2nd unit director handled the raid on the rebel's base, I suddenly had a realization that it might have benefited the film as a whole. Allow me to explain: See, my understanding of the Predator is that its supposed to fool you into thinking its a standard 80's action film with the musclebound heroes with big guns mowing down cannon fodder, throwing one liners, and blowing the place up. And then subverts it and gives it a twist by introducing an unseen invincible threat that suddenly turns it into a thrilling survival horror movie.
PEGASUS MASTER Well in my opinion the action sequnce were one of the best part of the movie, but I actually think John Mctiernan could just do little more better as he did with Die Hard.
Martin VR Im talking about the attack on the compound. The 2nd unit director shot that sequence and Mctiernan didn't like it. Static shit after static shot. Its still great seeing them work as a team tho
I rewatched this again fairly recently, and one of the things which struck me most about it was how well it’s aged. There isn’t any painfully dated 80s technology or fashions or anything. Even it’s setting seems out of time; you never find out where you are, just “the jungle,” and that’s all that matters.
Ha! Mine too! Friday nights. Mom was a flight attendant on the road. Arnold, Stallone, Van Damme. He laughed at most. I was always fascinated. It was dead quiet when we watched this film together, though. Best action flick OF ALL TIME. No question.
The movie is insane , first makes you feel safe then is a thriller then is some man vs nature vs alien duel , people need to show this to hes kids before they see the sequels
I have a son whos 5 soon to be 6, and hes friends are talking about modern action/horror movies, i might as well show the true meaning of great action monster movie with this soon. He now seen Star Wars and Superman movies, all the original movies. I can see and hear him talking about scary stuff now and his curiosity. Ive seen worse movies (horror movies) at his age lol.
One of the things that makes Predator work for me is that Dutch (Schwarzenegger) comes so very close to losing. Despite the fact he defeats the Predator, it is tempting to call this one a draw. It's not even clear (at least to me) if he will survive his injuries. In any good story, the protagonist must struggle, and that struggle is brilliantly shown in this movie.
Agreed. If not for sheer good-fortune (the mud), he'd have had no chance at all. Even at the end, he doesn't kill the Predator with his own hand, he just injures it sufficiently that it decides to take them both out by blowing itself up.
Bruce Carroll To call Dutch and the Predator equals is asinine. The Pred wasted Hopper's team, Dutch's team, countless guerilla, sniffed out the mud camo, beat him to a pulp, toyed with him, avoided his spike trap and just so happened to stand in the perfectly wrong place. It'd be like you beating up your brother then as you walk him down to finish him, a semi barrels through your living room and kills you.
Exactly. This is why I really dislike Predator 2. That sense of overwhelming power of the Predator from the first film is severely diminished in the sequel. Danny Glover is not some hardened green beret, and yet he defeats the city hunter in hand-to-hand combat almost effortlessly and survives to waltz away on his two feet. It makes the predator, as a creature, seem like a big joke, and all sense of dread and tension, and the feeling of "being hunted" is totally absent from the movie. Instead, we get the predator mimicking "funny" lines for comedic effect, and Gary Busey wearing a tinfoil suit.
@@snozzlehead92 actually, I attribute it to difference between two Predators. First one is discerning, honed, experienced Hunter. Second is young, driven by passion, ambition but without experience - that's why it chooses warzone instead of jungle, that's why it is going to rake up kills .... understand: thing that Predator I did works only once. That's why in later movie, they kept protagonists in the dark, but not the viewer.
i've honestly seen predatory maybe 300 or 400 times. literally. i used to watch it every day during the summer break when i was a kid, for multiple years. there are many movies i've seen many times but nothing can compare to this movie. it's also Arnold's best acting performance.
It's the perfect action film. It has the best casting, greatest score, ground-breaking special effects, a truly original creature costume, a killer script and note-perfect direction. What have I missed?
3:45 - The sequence works because it displays the team as professional killers able to mop up a force of greater numbers quickly, efficiently. So when you see them face the lone Predator afterwards, it really hits home how outclassed the average moviegoer would be in the same situation.
nice point. and I thought it was a nice pivot point for the movie, a false ending (the mission ended, but the real action just began), yes it used common action movie tropes and payoffs, but for many movie goers it paid off the ticket price right then and there, offsetting the suspense.
This film is so good and still enjoyable after all these years because it's honest. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, zero pseudo philosophical bullshit, no subtext about survival, or ethics or moral or humanity blabla... Action packed, humorous and funny, characters you care about, Arnold at his best, cheesy lines. 100% fun.
Major Gill.......last name Tee....but don't judge me....they stole my innocent....lol I don't know, thought it was funny and share that with you, just popped in my head lol
This movie perfectly combines action, horror, sci-fi and suspense with a strong undercurrent of friendship between the characters and a superb, almost invincible villain. Everything is blended seamlessly and that's why I think this movie is so beloved over thirty years later. Predator is my favorite movie and it always will be.
Well I hope instead that filmmakers of today are inspired by Predator so they can make a blockbuster in a similar vain that isn't boring, cash-grabbing or predictable. And I think Films looked a lot better when they were actually shot on Film, had so much richness, colour, texture, grain, Digital is just high definition but even then; it's flat and bland, Digital's like Tap Water and Film is like Gin, so start shooting with actual film cameras again folks.
If this movie came out today, it would be given 1/10 for not being sufficiently diverse. Sure, we see different races in the team, but where are the strong independent wahmen? Where are the LGBTQIA+ characters? Why are they body shaming the muscular-challenged? Where are the disabled team members? Oh no, this film would not do well today.
Dub T what's great is all these guys are bad motherfuckers even the guy with glasses you get a sense he is a commando desire his personality and the way they move together and work together. Also the fact that at first they aren't even aware of the real threat they see something but don't know yet what it is. The movie paces itself really well with each commando dying one at a time and each in his own way
Skinny latino? His name is Poncho Ramírez and he's the last member of the team to die, so his physical appearance does not really matter at all. Afterall, he uses the grenade launcher.
Not strong and macho? He is: he took a whole log strike to the bare chest and still could walk, aim, and even tried to defend himself and his comrades to the very least...! That's one of the points of the movie, I think: every character is as important and likeable as the others, even Anna, she has a purpose in the story, and even thanks to her we learn more about the Predator itself.
I think this film is great for one main reason in particular: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnold is the one who hired John McTiernan to direct this film, and helped kick off his career! This film also had the benefit of being released after other great films such as Terminator and Aliens. These type of films are and always will be groundbreaking in the since they elevated the science fiction and action genres into what we have today.
predator 1 is good because it actually has the characteristics of a hunter. the others, you get the feeling it's more just a murder count or all out war on humans
Agreed. Thank goodness that when Stan Winston was drawing out the new design he was sitting next to none other than James f-ing Cameron who actually suggested the lower jaw/mandible part of the look.
yes, it looked really b-grade. imo they couldn't have improved on what they actually used for the movie. the face reveal scene near the end is one of my favourite all-time movie scenes.
It was also intended to be much more OP than the iconic model version, being able to shape-shift and stuff. But nonetheless, TBH I would like to see how the finished version would look like.
I think why people diss it isn't because it was a bad movie, but because it had soooooo much potential and didn't live up to it. Predator 2 had a great concept (taking the action to a major city to distinguish itself from the first movie), a solid cast that was very different from the first film (instead of elite troops the main heroes are 3 very underdog cops: Danny Glover's middle aged main cop, Bill Paxton's mouthy upstart cop and Maria Conchito Alonso's tough as nails pregnant cop) and an expansion of the Predator mythos. It could've easily been great if the director, producers and studio put the care into it that the creative team had put into the original.
I watched predator when I was 7. So I was desperate to watch predator 2 for years on end. Managed to finally watch it on tv when I was 15. The fight scenes at the end were totally worth the wait
Predator 2 is technically a very well made film and highly entertaining. However, its biggest problem is its tone - there is zero warmth or emotion in that movie. Compare it to this movie where you have scenes of the soldiers mourning their fallen comrades or just having some friendly banter with one another - it adds so much to a film. That scene in the original on the helicopter where Poncho throws a piece of rolled up paper at Hawkins (which he catches without even looking) and both kinda just look at each other and smile, says more about the characters and their kinship with one another than the entire film of Predator 2 put together does with its characters. You've got to have some human element to a film to make it resonate with people (which explains the popularity of Arnold's Predator). Predator 2's closing scene is two guys angrily confronting each other and the other calling him an asshole when he runs off. Kinda sums it up haha.
I'm a Vietnam veteran. The movie, despite all the hyper-masculine bullshit, captured the atmosphere I experienced in Vietnam better than any other movie did in its time. So did Aliens. In those days, when anybody asked me what the best moves about the war were, I always put these two on my list.
I think the reason for the film's success is the concept. For a film that's an Arnold actioner, it's completely out of left field. Sure, this could have been another cheap Alien-based knockoff, but like that film, Predator had very good characters, a good storyline, and filmmakers who cared about the film. In truth, this film came out of the blue, because for years, nearly every Arnold film had him being able to overcome obstacles without him having to do a lot of thinking. And in this film, he's challenged because not only has he been lied to by his former best friend about the mission, but he's faced with a psychological dilemma. He and his men have never encountered such a being as the Predator, and when they start dying one by one, a sense of claustrophobia begins to set in....And that's because no matter which way they turn, the Predator has a one-up on the team due to its technology, and its hunting capabilities.
Highconsciousnessman I agree 100%. I like most of Arnold's films excluding his most cliche' flicks, but this movie Arnold got his ass handed to him, he barely won the fight.
The scene when they are so scared they shoot up the jungle and Bill Dukes keep his finger on the trigger even when it's out of bullets scares the fuck out of you because you see despite all the firepower in the world it's going to kill you and there's nothing you can do about it.
EXACTLY. It was all about turning all the qualities of a typical Arnold action flick of the 80s on him. The Predator is hiding somewhere, it's stronger than Dutch, is just as tactical and it is relentless in it's hunt... I just watched Predator 2 this evening and goddamn, it's not bad when you get down to it but it is a let down. A real shame, I think: it could still been claustrophobic in the urban jungle. Instead, it shrinked back into B-Movie territory.
Easily one of the few timeless action/horror/thriller... definitely still a great movie by even today's standards...it's uncanny how good this movie is
Gentlemen, if you want to know if your woman is a keeper? Have her watch Predator. If she doesn't like it, she's a heretic and dump here. Relationships cannot be built without the mutual appreciation of the Predator.
One point that was not pointed out here that I really enjoyed nevertheless was the on point military tactics. The scene with the Native American cutting that one hollow branch to drink milk out of it was cool, also the way they snuck forward to the camp almost in complete silence. Also the more tactical, quiet approach in the beginning of the camp assault. The excellent teamwork. They really looked like they knew what they were doing, like an actual military unit. More accuracy and realism than most of nowadays action movies have
The geography point he makes is a really good one. It's also something that's really lacking in action sequences like Game of Thrones and the Borne films. They have these half second action sequences chopped together that makes me feel dizzy and confused as to what's going off. That kind of editing is not fun to watch.
I still believe there is a better cut from Black, that the studio sadly had almost completely reshot. We won't see it though, and I doubt there's gonna be a Snyder cut type support for it. I need to rewatch The Predator, but in the cinema after a couple of beers I dug most of it.
I remember seeing the vhs cover at my local video store, it was just Arnie and a big fuck off gun in the jungle, and the word PREDATOR. I always thought it just an army flick until I watched it when I was 11. Mind blown!
I think that the whole mess that was the first action scene actually helped. Sure, it wasn’t clean, but it made us feel like it was a typical action movie. Throw us off the scent that was the whole Horror movie to come. Made the characters feel like unstoppable action heroes. But to throw it for a loop after? Perfection
While it may just be me rationalizing things to sweep away criticism, I like how the first big action sequence kinda feels like a standard 80's era Arnold movie. It makes the left turn the movie makes once the Predator comes to play hit that much harder.
There are few movies which you can watch over and over again yet they never get old. Predator falls into this catagory. Over 30 years later and somehow it still gets better every time you watch it. Superb acting, ridiculously awesome script, and more action and originality that may never be surpassed in another action flick. Arnold's greatest movie by far.
Finally, someone who can explain why this is such a good movie in a more eloquent way than my attempt to mimic arnie's scream when people say it's trash! I'd love to see you do a video like this on the first Conan film, as the commentary kind of sums up the perfect mixing of Laurentis' attempts to make it esoteric and Arnie's dry humour which pervades the piece.
What'd you think of 'Predators?' Despite a few missteps I think it's solid as hell and I quite liked Adrien Brody as an action lead, more so than I ever thought I would.
Didn't like it anywhere near as much as the original, and wasn't a fan of the OTT serial killer guy reveal, but it's a fun diversion and better than the AVP films
Rossatron Of course I didn't like it as much as the original, but for what it was I think it executed it's premise quite well and, though the serial killer reveal was quite lame, even the idea of the predators transporting a serial killer to a game-planet is pretty interesting, Which summarizes 'Predators' as a whole, really; though the execution is flawed, the ideas and overall premise is refreshing and inspired. Too bad David Fincher couldn't get involved.
We cared about Dutch's team. All the other sequels and mashups had people I couldn't WAIT to see die. In Predators, I thought weird Lawrence Fishburn was wasted and not just when the Predators killed him.
Ouija1210 See, I liked that he wasn't a man-mountain, that he was skinny and shredded. I was in SOCOM, and more tier 1 soldiers look like Adrien than do Arnold.
Predator (1987) is definitely 4/4 stars --- it was the gold standard for thrilling action movie --- I thought Predators (2010) was a nice concept but failed on execution --- I give it 2.5/4 stars
A timeless classic. I have watched it at least 500 times, can watch it 501 time with the same enthusiasm. The new Prey movie was the closest they can get, imho. It was excellent.
I'm glad you took the time to point out that, apart form all the other brilliant things about this classic movie, it just looks fantastic. I've always though this. Every shot is perfectly framed, lit & composed. You can tell that the guy controlling things on the other side of the camera is a true artist, and McTiernan is certainly that.
I think it's a great film in showing expectations, and then driving a car right through those expectations. Everyone expected this movie to be another "Arnold shooter with big guns". Which granted part of it is just that. But it slowly peals that back and shows a taught horror/thriller movie that makes Arnold, someone who defined masculinity and heroism in the 80s and 90s, and makes him the hunted, the vulnerable target. Just a great movie with shattering expectations.
The only imperfection of this film, is not showing Billy and the Predator face off. The feels I got, seeing him drop his gun readying to go to war, only to be let down by it happening off screen.
No no no bro, try to think of it this way, every one of the guys in the group looked at billy ass the badass he is and the uniquely smart tracker and all with the badass machete right. And then towards the end he does his thing with the gun tossing and cutting himself on purpose which makes his presige and badass was even more so. Then the movie cuts to him yelling showing his head being carried off by you know who. Shortly after the predator takes out Poncho right. To me this sets up and all the more makes the final battle with arnold more scary. Because you at this point still haven't seen anybody try to take it on heads up (no pun intended) Anyways thought I try to change your mind. And don't get me wrong I too would like to have seen what if any fight did Billy put up against the Predator. At least they could have made an alternate scene and put it the extras part of the movie.
movie is great, like gone with the wind for action buffs. When men were men. Also the trap scene leading to the ending fight. Men of many ethnic backgrounds. the sound track was great, one liners that you still Iuse and the care you have for the characters. will miss this genre greatly.. guys who like that could kick your ass, now they just put on their girlfriend's maleup.
In my list of favorite and most memorable Movies of all time, Predator is number one, because its kind of a childhoodmovie and to this day, I can't get bored by that Movie.
The cinematography was unbelievable, it was muted but felt so organic and crisp. the brightest thing in some shots was a patch of dirty skin, and some of the wide angle shots showing them moving an interacting with the jungle looked as real as they must have felt, it didn't feel like a set, it felt like un-tampered environment. I believe, though, that Bill Duke as Mac actually turned in the best performance next to Kevin Peter Hall as the Predator.
Why is Predator so good? A great script by Jim Thomas and John Thomas(inspired by 'The Most Dangerous Game'), a fantastic cast supporting Arnold Schwarzenegger, Academy Award-nominated special effects, fantastic creature effects from the legendary Stan Winston(with input from James Cameron), a great musical score by Alan Silvestri, and a timeless 80s atmosphere that reminds everyone why the 80s were the greatest decade and why we desperately need another decade like it.
I never knew that the base fight was another director. Personally for me it’s even better that there was such a juxtaposition between the way the film was shot here to later. To me this was to lull the audience into believing this to be just another ‘action film’ but then totally changing that in the second half. It’s two films in one and that was why it always worked so flawlessly IMO. It’s also hilarious and adds a lot of fun to the film making it so nostalgic to watch years later and a classic.
Such a great insight about the 2nd unit directing the base attack scene. No lie, I have probably seen Predator more than 50 times in my life, I watched it endlessly with friends growing up. Each time that scene sticks out as slightly goofy and OTT compared to the rest which is just masterful. It's great to know why.
"The only existing proof we have that Arnold Schwarzenegger is in fact, a skilled actor. " Not true. There was also 'Kindergarten Cop': a perfect example of the empty heads of Hollywood movie makers. Even Jesus couldn't forgive that!
First saw the scene of the squad fast roping from the chopper when my cousin was watching the movie and this was around 2002-2003. I was only 10 years old. Since I was a big military fan i watched it once thrn twice and by now i probably i watched it almost 5-10 times. Its a timeless classic.
What i think that makes this movie work so well is, the team isn't going into the jungle to hunt a alien monster. They go straight in trying to rescue people then it turns into something else entirely different. Watching them going in so confident in themselves, then Watching them in confusion, horror, then helplessness. Wow! What a movie! In my top 5
Big fan.

And let's face it, the action stars of today aren't even close to the guys in the 80s in terms of masculinity. The only writer that can recreate the feeling of 80s action movies is stallone. Rambo last blood was awesome.
Nope, you are wrong about Prey. Prey sucks ass, and is awful film in general.
Prey is purely shitty feminism movie. Do u think a predator can be killed with just bow and arrow. They totally shifted the predator franchise. Prey is good for 2k pussies not for 90s kids who watched real predator
Prey is even worse than Predator 2018. They literally have a little pokimane killing the predator.
Also that "arrrg" when gets back-handed by the Predator is also funny.
@WheelManStan: good specific examples and lots of them
No doubt that Mr Universe nailed that hot latina woman at the end. No doubt.
wheelmanstan yep. If there is a remake it will star an all female cast.
Spot on
And the realism that fear spawns carries you right to the end, for me, this is the best Schwarzenegger movie of them all!

Damn, that's a powerhouse of a combo right there!
Why is it so good:
1.) Arnold

3.) Quotes you will remember
4.) A good monster seen late and rare
5.) Heat signature vision
6.) Cloaking device
7.) Not tons of computer shit that ruins it
8.) Believable setting and story
9.) Not putting Arnold in the focus
10.) Not these kind of happy-ending-movies
11.) A cast of known actors that do not try to wipe the others out
12.) A movie you can show your girl, until even she tries to make the predator sound or remembers it when you do it
13.) Its always a nice gift on DVD for a man
14.) The music, man
15.) Al Bundy recommended it

Excellent movie, my favorite Action movie of all time.
ttv0 and Dutch lucked out in the end, since the predator walked under the catch weight.
And yet if the Predator didn't have a sense of honor he could have EASILY just slaughtered every last one of them.
ttv0
Yes, and it holds true to maintaining the predator as an enigmatic figure that can only be beaten by 1/1000 odds.
They cared, that is the simplest, shortest explanation of why this movie worked so well.
It's funny how Shane Black is a skinny dude but fits in perfectly, great casting.
thats the problem with movies nowadays, nobody cares except for the money theyre raking in
You've got the number one action star of all time, the best action film director, and one of the best Hollywood composers alive, you can't go wrong.
I've been watching predator since i was 7. i literally watch it at least 3 times a year. it's that good and it still holds up today.
and the original score is AMAZING
That score when they are showing Arnold and the Pred preparing for the final showdown, slowly building up to the scene where Arnold lights the torch and screams is a pure eargasm it's so good!
you gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers in this bracket!
smitty manjensen Yeeahhh....same here. An amazing masterpiece.
I agree, it never gets old no matter how many times you watch it. Only Shane Black's glasses and the team's civies in the beginning draw attention to the fact that it's an 80s film.
Too bad Shane black had no clue what the predator was about.
He actually managed to make a movie worse than all the previous ones.
Jesus Christ what a mess he made.
Too bad Shane Blacks The Predator sucked. It wasn`t as good as the first Predator or Predator 2 for that matter.

It's really good because the commandos don't do anything stupid in the whole film. They are the ultimate badasses that earth has to offer and they are still no match for the predator. It's annoying when the protagonists in films get caught in situations through sheer stupidity.
kingbeef uhhh.. what about Billy?
They litter and leave their equipment and clothing behind that's pretty stupid (it's a long term thing that dosen't effect the movie but defiently effects things latter).
maxcoseti billy knew he was gonna die. He died on HIS terms in effect. And his dying bought the others some more time. His death fits in with the mindset of the tight knit group being portrayed.

@Trzn may have been inspired by the Rambo with aliens, but it was still very original
Don't forget, the back ground music was so good too.
one thing that blows my mind about predator is how good the predator looks at the end.

I loved the camera work in Die Hard and Predator. John McTiernan knows how to frame.
Lyfa Lee Zhure or a slasher flick that replaced horny teenagers with bona fide action heroes

Lyfa Lee Zhure Have you ever seen EVIDENCE on UA-cam? It is like that as well!
When you pointed out that a 2nd unit director handled the raid on the rebel's base, I suddenly had a realization that it might have benefited the film as a whole. Allow me to explain:
See, my understanding of the Predator is that its supposed to fool you into thinking its a standard 80's action film with the musclebound heroes with big guns mowing down cannon fodder, throwing one liners, and blowing the place up. And then subverts it and gives it a twist by introducing an unseen invincible threat that suddenly turns it into a thrilling survival horror movie.
Wilson Tortosa it was just directed badly
PEGASUS MASTER What? Predator directed badly?
Martin VR the action scene was directed badly. thats why John Mctiernan didn't like the sequence
There's litterally 2second of movie (bolt that hits Dutch in the arm) that need remaster.

Bruce Carroll
To call Dutch and the Predator equals is asinine.
According to the Making of Predator 2, Dutch died 9 weeks after the first movie, that's why he wasn't around in the second movie.
That's why in later movie, they kept protagonists in the dark, but not the viewer.

nice point. and I thought it was a nice pivot point for the movie, a false ending (the mission ended, but the real action just began), yes it used common action movie tropes and payoffs, but for many movie goers it paid off the ticket price right then and there, offsetting the suspense.

Predator 2 is HIGHLY underrated. I'm tired of people constantly dissing it. There are so many awesome scenes in that movie.
But 1 was so good it cast a large shadow on 2.
I thought predator 2 was a good movie. In my opinion predator 2 is just as good or as good as the first one.
Thank you for your service
👍👍👍
So uh traumatic experience?
Dense jungle is not open.
Well, simply put, ‘fear of the unknown’
Because the cast wasn't filled with a group of glamorous people or scared teenagers and as someone else mentioned, they were rated 18 for adults.
Predator a Masterpiece movie of all time in Hollywood cinema
"critics at the time were not as kind to it as they are now". Gee... isnt that the story of a ton of todays classics/cult movies?
Easily one of the few timeless action/horror/thriller... definitely still a great movie by even today's standards...it's uncanny how good this movie is
big thank you to everyone who worked on this movie (every position). you all made a perfect movie and your hard work didnt go unnoticed!
Gentlemen, if you want to know if your woman is a keeper? Have her watch Predator. If she doesn't like it, she's a heretic and dump here. Relationships cannot be built without the mutual appreciation of the Predator.
wise words
🤣
"Gentlemen, if you want to know if your woman is a keeper? "
I don't know why you posed that as a question, it makes no sense.
amazing movie. watched it like gazillion times. fun never ends
More accuracy and realism than most of nowadays action movies have
This movie is total legendary "no comments" 👊😎🔥
Sorry
fuck you
The geography point he makes is a really good one. It's also something that's really lacking in action sequences like Game of Thrones and the Borne films. They have these half second action sequences chopped together that makes me feel dizzy and confused as to what's going off. That kind of editing is not fun to watch.
"If one man understands Predator, it's this guy."
Oof. That did not age well.
I still believe there is a better cut from Black, that the studio sadly had almost completely reshot. We won't see it though, and I doubt there's gonna be a Snyder cut type support for it. I need to rewatch The Predator, but in the cinema after a couple of beers I dug most of it.
@@Rossatron How many beers?
@@ArchRotor ALL the beers. Clearly.
@@Rossatron what lol??
I only saw the trailer for the predator, and it made me want to drink beer
That's a score you'll recognize instantly.
Blue G Silvestri KILLED IT with the score I can’t wait to hear what he has to bring to Ready Player One
It makes the left turn the movie makes once the Predator comes to play hit that much harder.
delete everything before the first comma.
Mctiernan is a genius.
I sort of went into Conan the Barbarian on another video about swords, sandals and sorcery you can see in my vids.
Aye, too much of a good thing, I guess...
Not really, Conan can never have enough love
What'd you think of 'Predators?' Despite a few missteps I think it's solid as hell and I quite liked Adrien Brody as an action lead, more so than I ever thought I would.
Didn't like it anywhere near as much as the original, and wasn't a fan of the OTT serial killer guy reveal, but it's a fun diversion and better than the AVP films
Eons I slept I loved Predators fantastic pace
Rossatron Of course I didn't like it as much as the original, but for what it was I think it executed it's premise quite well and, though the serial killer reveal was quite lame, even the idea of the predators transporting a serial killer to a game-planet is pretty interesting,
Which summarizes 'Predators' as a whole, really; though the execution is flawed, the ideas and overall premise is refreshing and inspired.
This is one of my best films ever and I consider it a horror movie.
1. "Predator" 10/10
2. "Predator 2" 8/10
3. "Predators" 5/10
4. "Alien Vs. Predator" 4/10
5. "Alien Vs. Predator 2" 1/10
Allow me to rebut...
1. Predator (1987): 3.5 stars/4 stars
2. Predator 2 (1990): 2 stars/4 stars
3. Alien vs. Predator (2004): 2.5 stars/4 stars
4. Alien vs. Predator: Requiem (2007): 1 star/4 stars
5. Predators (2010): 3 stars/4 stars
... let's hope Shane Black's "The Predator" coming in 2019 properly does the original (and best rendition to date) justice.
madscientistgamer Dafuq? Predator 2 was still THE SHIT. AVP 1st is decent, but the rest are garbage.
NIGGAH PLEASE??????????
yo kid have u seen AVP Requiem ? I think not
Predator (1987) is definitely 4/4 stars --- it was the gold standard for thrilling action movie --- I thought Predators (2010) was a nice concept but failed on execution --- I give it 2.5/4 stars
Predator is a masterpiece
A timeless classic. I have watched it at least 500 times, can watch it 501 time with the same enthusiasm.
The new Prey movie was the closest they can get, imho. It was excellent.
Right. Same as predators, that was a good film. But you're right, Predator is a classic that you can watch over and over again.
I watched it 3 times this week and it's on my TV right now, its too good.
Billy said whatever is out there it ain't human. His death was the most noble in the whole movie.
Same man. It sucks
Can we get a Blain and Mac origins prequel.
I always wondered the back story of these two. Seemed like they went through a lot together.
“I ain’t got time to bleed” possible one of the best lines ever
Why is Predator so good? A great script by Jim Thomas and John Thomas(inspired by 'The Most Dangerous Game'), a fantastic cast supporting Arnold Schwarzenegger, Academy Award-nominated special effects, fantastic creature effects from the legendary Stan Winston(with input from James Cameron), a great musical score by Alan Silvestri, and a timeless 80s atmosphere that reminds everyone why the 80s were the greatest decade and why we desperately need another decade like it.
Masterpiece. Without shaking camera around!
Absolutely genius movie. 10/10!
I'm here 11 months later to say the movie was genius!
What the CIA got you pushing too many pencils?
Billie no!!!!!!
Get to the chopper!!!
Stick around.
I ain’t got time to bleed.
And so many more!
If it bleed, we can kill it...
Knock knock...
Go go on get to the chopper...
He couldn't see me...
Yuh set us aaghhhh.......sol bowlshiet....olov it.....ze kabanet minister...ze whole buzinezz!!
Mac.....MAAACCCC!!!
Dillon! U son of a bitch...
Predator has aged incredibly well compared to other 80s action movies. I loved it as a child and even more as an adult.
The only existing proof we have that Arnold Schwarzenegger is in fact, a skilled actor.
"The only existing proof we have that Arnold Schwarzenegger is in fact, a skilled actor.
"
Not true. There was also 'Kindergarten Cop': a perfect example of the empty heads of Hollywood movie makers. Even Jesus couldn't forgive that!
When a movies secondary actors are so great that you would watch a full length movie about their backstory its a winner for sure and then add Arnold!!
Spot on every single character was top draw
First saw the scene of the squad fast roping from the chopper when my cousin was watching the movie and this was around 2002-2003. I was only 10 years old. Since I was a big military fan i watched it once thrn twice and by now i probably i watched it almost 5-10 times. Its a timeless classic.
7:18 You step on a Lego
7:20-7:26 You realize you stepped on a Lego
As corny as it is, "You got time to duck?" never fails to make me laugh.
In my top 5
