- It is fair to say that changes have been coming in thick and fast over the last couple years in Saudi Arabia. To some the changes are happening so fast the place is unrecognisable; to others the changes couldn’t come quick enough.
I’ll take you through all the changes I’ve experienced so far in my time here - most of which have definitely lead to a better quality of life - especially for expats who are used to a more liberal way of life.
I have no doubt in a years time this video will be totally out-dated with even more changes!

Decency is important too many people lack of it, I'm not saying Saudi should be strict but decency should be law, self-respect and for others heartbreaking that westerners just don't understand that
I tend to agree with you, but to be honest, most people coming out here aren’t educated / it’s not easy looking up exactly what customs are like. It’s very difficult coming from somewhere which is super liberal and you don’t even need to think about what to step out the house wearing, to being somewhere where you need to consider these things.
I agree with you but Western societies have no law when it comes to self-respecting your body so you don't come across cheap and slutty and cheap, then they turn around and call Muslim countries backward because we don't want to be animal like I don't call it free spirit I call it disrespect, balance is important

I know quite a few with lots of tattoos and they’ve never had any issues, Saudi women too, so I wouldn’t worry if I were you - the only potential issue would be if you’re in a super conservative type job I would assume
Everything changing is cool, but Alcohol is the actual big no-no. We absolutely don't want that shit in here. Personally, as a Saudi civilian, I'd be really disappointed if it ever becomes legal here. Also, thanks for this great video!
I couldn’t agree more - I think alcohol will ruin things. There is so much negative impact from the fallout of alcohol - both from an individual point of view and also in society. I personally don’t miss it whilst I’m living here and know you can definitely have fun without it!

It is inconceivable that alcohol will be legalised in the land of Prophet Muhammad. The Al Sauds will be overthrown if that happens.
Hi Pete! With all the changes, how is it when it comes to beach visits for women? Can you go as "normal" or you need to be covered / wearing clothes the whole time?
It’s not the best to be honest - you don’t really want to go to ‘public’ beaches… The ones worth going to are basically behind closed doors and so you either need to know someone to get in, or you have to pay an entry fee. This is really an area I’d wish would change - it’s such a shame being right next to the Red Sea and not really have facilities to enjoy it.

Recently i had an offer to one of the construction company there in Saudi Arabia to come and be part of them on the NEOM project and i am will to come and stay there. Obviously i will be based in NEOM. What is the mood for the this massive project there in Saudi. Lastly if things goes the plan i might be in Saudi Arabia end of October 2023.
Thanks for reaching out! Sounds like exciting times for you. The mood here is Saudi is pretty epic for all things up in Neom. I know a lot of people are moving there both from within the Kingdom and from outside. I’d say it’s a time of huge opportunity and could be an awesome thing to be a part of, especially as it’s all in the early stages. A bit apprehensive over it?

Alcohol well, Allah forbids a time will come when all the things which are forbidden will be done openly , it's one of the signs that the last hr is near.
We do get non alcoholic beer and wine here. I think that is enough, we don't need drunk ppl doing unethical things. Sorrynotsorry

there's no religious police + lawfully you can wear the short everywhere except in the mosque as well as government sectors

As a western Muslim female convert, I actually was very sad to see how much things have relaxed in Saudi. I understand that forcing people isn’t the way to promote Islam and obviously some of these rules were not even Islamic, and more cultural, but I would never want Saudi to become like the West. Our Islamic traditions are better than the West’s. If you look at all the turmoil in the West over “liberalism” you can see that this “freedom” and “do what thou wilt” attitude has mostly created a corrupt and immoral society, full of depressed and deviant people. Islam is the best way of life. I hope at some point the Saudi people will realize that “progress” is sometimes regressive.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion, but the problem with opinions are that they are often biased by personal beliefs. Much like what you’re saying. I agree with you on some points here for sure with the West thinking that every other nation should be in their own image as the West is ‘civilised’ and can’t do any wrong.
But equally saying something is ‘better’ or ‘best’ is not fair either as it totally depends on what your definition of ‘best’ is and by what measure you are judging it.
There is too much ‘us’ versus ‘them’ in societies across the world today and instead of that kind of thinking, my opinion is that everyone could do a much better job of understanding different opinions without judgement and try to not be so closed-minded to different ways of thinking. That ultimately is how things progress forwards - sometimes for the better, sometimes unfortunately for the worse. But without it, we would still be stuck in the dark ages!
@@petedoessaudi Yes, well, I’m moving to Saudi soon, so this is really a troubling thing for me since the main reason I want to live there is to be in an environment that supports me and my husband’s values (he’s Saudi), and to inshallah be able to raise our kids in an environment like that. I think that it’s a very different thing when a place holds an ideological significance such as Saudi. It’s like if the Vatican suddenly allowed strippers or something. Obviously, only Mecca and Medina are holy, though other places hold historical significance as well, especially in the Hijaz, but as Muslims we think of Saudi’s as the gatekeepers and protectors of that land so if they become immoral then really what hope do we have? It’s difficult to explain these things to someone who doesn’t hold the same belief system. But I think you would find most Muslims would agree with me that it’s a nightmare for Saudi to allow alcohol for example.
@@khellege there are definitely things that I can’t relate to as we don’t hold the same beliefs, but there are things that we can agree on. For example, I still think alcohol shouldn’t be made legal - I think there are way too many negatives that comes out of it… Having been exposed to it over the years and seen the worst of it, I think the only reason to introduce it would be a financial reason, which ironically would be negated with the negative health and societal impact alcohol abuse has. Either way, alcohol is available in the country, just like in any other country where things are illegal. Where there is demand, supply will follow. That’s the reality of it unfortunately. For example, I know many Saudis and practising Muslims who drink alcohol. Does this make them bad people? I’m not one to judge.
There are many ideals we have in life, but they often don’t stand up as true and we are often disappointed. At the end of the day, it is naive to think that everyone is perfect and lives into their values 100% of the time - whether cultural, religious, personal or societal. Regardless of who we are or what we believe in, we are all human and not any one of us is perfect.
I believe in life nothing is black or white and who are we to judge someone else’s decisions. We can have an opinion, but judging people and being intolerant is how we create a further divide and an ‘us’ versus ‘them’ society.
@@khellege Converts can be a lot more pious in my experience. I know many Saudis who are born into Islam who do drink alcohol and have a much more relaxed interpretation of the religion.

Alcohol will be allowed in neom. They already said that the place will have its own rules, so it will basically act as a different country, kind of like Shirm al Sheikh. So this is a big sign that Alcohol will be allowed.

Things have changed dramatically in the past 3-4 years and I think it will continue to do so very fast. Regarding alcohol it will be available in the touristic areas once the gega projects are open for busines (2-3 years) I guess

Hi mate.. I'm an Aussie about to head to Saudi .. Riyadh for work at the uni.. am wanting to ask about what you said/... don't take photos of people in public.. I'm a portrait sketch artist.. and I know you say .. things are changing.. but.. should I bring my sketch board and charcoal to offer sketch to locals in social settings? I know . that it's also important to send a gift when making new acquaintances,, what are your thoughts and insight on this? How does art go done in Saudi .. as far as something closer to street art? just a few things to help me with the correct perspective .. cheers.. mate .. looking forward to checking out more of you vids ..

I think that’d be a really nice idea and people would love that. I’ve never seen that happen and I’m sure as long as it’s low-key and doesn’t look like it’s a business you’ll be good. Start maybe with just a small set-up like a notepad and charcoal and see how it goes down. Rather than an easel for example..!
To be honest, legally you can’t take a picture of someone without permission, but as you could imagine everyone is snapchatting and instagramming their day so pretty much everyone is breaking this rule… The thing to ensure you don’t do is make an individual the focus of your story, especially if in a negative way. Basically just be a respectful human.
