So many amazing tips in this video! I thought Ti White was clogging my airbrush because I was inexperienced. I'm so excited to try and use it on my pallette.
The only reason I have the White Ink was to try it in my airbrush, so it's just interesting that now I use it on my pallet and only use normal white in my airbrush..criss cross'll make ya jump jump I guess.
I tend to use Golden's high flow acrylics for thinning paints with a color when I'm not just letting my wet pallet do it's job, I do have a homemade thinner from Barbatos Rex that works wonders, but sometimes it's a little too much for some paints and it's best for use with the airbrush. I have NEVER had an ink jam an airbrush and I use a budget, $40 airbrush with a very mid-tier compressor. I think you need to play with your PSI and what you're using as thinner in the airbrush or how much you're using of it if you're getting jams frequently. I find that like two drops of thinner then the ink and a nice backwash blending is all you need to make it flow well.
Interesting video. From my research, I've found out that contrast/speed/instant type paints work really well over a silvery metallic basecoat. Another item to look into is Dr PH Martin's Spectralite Liquid Acrylics. From what I've been able to find out about them is that they're somewhere between acrylic inks and watercolors, so the white from those might work better in your airbrush.
I believe some of those Contrasts/Instant/Speed colours have the same kind of staining properties as the inks do, so I have no doubt they'd work too, I just wanted to focus on inks for this video. Those do seem interesting, I'll look to see what the internet says about them.
Yeah white liquitex ink cakes my airbrush needle in only about 10 seconds of use - it's maddening. If I thin it with flow improver it helps slightly, but then the problem is the ink becomes incredibly fluid and if I barely tap the trigger it blasts out and pools lol.
I need to try out my liquitex a bit, but Scale 75's inktensity line hasn't jammed up my $40 airbrush at all. Inks are a little bit of a chore to clean up, but dialing your PSI and making sure you have the right amounts of thinner can be really helpful. I'd recommend Barbatos Rex's thinner recipe if you haven't tried it.
GrG miniatures seems to get smooth white ink zenithals using a few drops of flow aid. Alternatively the guys at cult of paint seem partial to tamiya flat white, and looking at their videos it's for a good reason.
This was a great tutorial and showcase of the many uses of acrylic inks! Your presentation is spectacular and I hope to learn more cool techniques and applications from your channel. How big was the creature model? And the lizard men too? I typically work with 27mm sized minis, so am wondering if these techniques can be used effectively at that size.
All of these tips should work on any size mini as really for the most part it's just playing with the properties of inks or paint, not really a scale thing. Though I'm pretty sure all of OPR's models are set to 32mm by default.
Ink's might be a bit of an issue for priming. By default, the ink medium is very glossy and fluid. Which means as a primer it's likely to bead up on flat surfaces, and in turn become hydrophobic itself once dry. Mixed with a matte medium/varnish it might might work as the medium does the work of actually sealing the model while the black ink just adds some colour. And with a Tack coat it'll reduce the likely hood of it beading up. But I feel like just pure black ink might get frustrating.
@@PaintmanJourneying gotchia, cause I just tried base coating models today with a chaos black spray (I didn't cover every tiny nook and cranny) and just took some Abbadon Black, mixed with ink and some acrylic thinner and it seems fine
Mixed with a normal black the ink would just be acting as a thinner-with-colour so I'm not surprised in that case it worked fine. It's stand alone black ink that I would be worried about :D
I'd love to say I worked extra hard on it or something, but really it was just a quick airbrush job. Base of Yellow Oxide, add white for a angled highlight near the base of the plume, use yellow ink to restain the white in the paint. Then Orange about halfway up, angled. Then Red ink in with the orange for the tip of the plume. And then a mix of Raw Umber and black and just some airbrush control to get the smoky bits at the tip of the bulbs. Then glued it back into his snout cause the only reason it wasn't even on the model in the first place was because it broke off for the 12th time and I was just sick of it XD
So it's a custom mixing swatch board I did when I got all of the Scale 75 Artist series paints. So just a canvas I primed, drew a grid on and painted with every single mix between every paint in the line.

That's why I just use paint instead, why bother with the ink if all you want's the pigment.

I'd definitely add some Matte Medium if you were trying to make an ink behave like a primer. It's my go-to for making colored primers.

What size tip are you using in your airbrush?
Mine is a .15mm Tip, so one of the smallest out there, a .2 would be comparable to other brands.

@@PaintmanJourneying Yeah, try like a 0.2 or even 0.3/0.35 and you might get a little better performance out of those inks.
