- We all have learned about primary colors. Can you use just these 3 colors to paint miniatures from beginning to the end? To answer that question, we need to go into color theory!

Primary paints are considered to be red, blue and yellow...BUT ARE THEY? In today's video we are gonna experiment with primary paints and find out whether you can use them to paint entire miniatures from beginning to the end while enjoying wide colourful spectrum of all colours.
Miniature painters usually stack so many paints that they are not even able to use all of them (which is certainly my case), but can you save some money by using...just 3 paints? With some color theory in miniature painting, hopefully!

I am painting miniatures for warhammer, age of sigmar, marvel crisis protocol, D&D and much more! Whether it is superhero miniatures, heroic characters or space marines, I will paint them! If you are looking for some sweet miniature painting tutorials or warhammer hobby content in general, this is the right channel for you!
Zumikito: i will paint a model using only 3 paints
Space marine players: two
well well well look who we have here
🤣🤣🤣🤣
This dude be painting better with 3 colours than I do with my entire S75 paint range.
I feel so sad, but inspired!
I mean, you can use the heavy body artists' acrylics, but you can also use Golden Fluid Acrylics, Golden High-Flow Fluid Acrylics, Liquitex Acrylic Gouache, and at least a dozen other lines of fluid acrylic artists' paints. Note that
1) Gloss paints are inherently higher saturation, because there is less surface scattering.
2) You can find anything from gloss to dead flat (Golden SoFlat, for instance) in artists acrylics.
I taught myself how to make skin tones from the five paints and did pretty well. Thing is, it wastes a ton of paint, takes a long time and it's not consistent. Just buying the tone you need is far superior in the end, unless you WANT to try and mix your own colors for the challenge.
I agree with you there, I would rather have my pre mixed skintones, few secondaries and browns and adjust with primary paints
You are now in my top 3 of the miniature painting youtube content creators. I’m learning more from your 5 minute stuff than i am from a £5 sub to a very well know mini painting Patreon! Keep up the excellent work Chris.

great video, thanks! I think it's time for you to make a discord channel, be the coolest! XD
"how to have a epic beard; explained in 5 minutes!"
This video is probably one of my favourites from your channel because many years ago, last time I stopped painting and retook the hobby again, quite an amount of my paints went… well, let's say stale. I had to throw them away, and I did not buy new bottles for most of the colors, since I bought them for a single mini the first time. Right now I have a very reduced set of paints for the hobby, just primary colors, secondary colors, a couple for add light and shadow, black and white (well, off-white). I also have a couple helper colors I like, but overall I don't think I have more than a dozen bottles now.
This said, I'm not very good at color mixing. Well, I can more or less get the color I want by mixing primaries, secondaries, helpers, etc. but REPRODUCING that mix is an entirely different matter. I lack that talent, clearly. I really struggle when I have to reproduce on my palette something I only see already dry on the mini, sometimes I match it but most of the time I don't.
Why am I telling you all this? Because you mentioned in another video that high quality painters, like you, make people like me hate the hobby and stop painting. And in my case, this video nearly had me throwing away all my tools and unpainted minis 😆Damn, Simon, you are VERY VERY VERY GOOD at color handling, I don't think I can even go near your talent no matter how much I practice.
Jaw dropping video, really, you're incredibly talented. And learning from you has made me loving my hobby even more, so I'm not quitting even after watching amazing videos like this. Keep doing such high quality videos.
Here is proof that learning can be fun, and isn't that the reason we take up hobbies? Finally, someone shows me what to do with the Kimera set sitting on my shelf. Thank you, sir, for all your videos. You got style.
I appriciate the joy in these videos. Really lifts the spirit.
I absolutely love your content mate.
agreed 100%
Seriously. His videos are right up there with the big boys like Squidmar and Miniac.
@@ryankrankowski7777 in 5 minutes or less 🤣
Always a treat to see one of your videos waiting for me when I hop on YT. Just the other day a buddy of mine was griping about not having enough paints to do anything with- gonna go shove this video in front of his eyes. Your uploads cover such a vast array of topics, I'm always able to pick out one of yours as a counterpoint to whatever subject they're grumbling about. Keep making us better painters, good sir- and have a great weekend.
I freaking spill my coffee with those drawings hahaha! Your humor is 10/10. Once again, thank you so much for the great content! I really love the approach from this one!
Awesome video. I dont have every color paint.. so color theory is definitely some thing I need to master. I think everyone should, it will make us better painters in the long run.
I've just started doing this as a hobby and you make it look so easy
Great video (and epic beard!)! I'm glad you made the distinction between additive and subtractive color theory.
Dude, you are the epitome of creativity for me. Hell of a painter and an amusing way of sharing your vast knowledge.
I love your videos man. This one hit home for me. I think I have like 18 paints and 4 washes and I always thought I needed more after watching the pros (that’s you 👍🏻) paint, but I’m gonna give this a shot! Thanks again
>Save money with this mini painting trick

Looks great!
(Cyan is actually a greeny blue, but your bluey blue worked fine. 😊 )
Nice job and interesting experiment.
I tried something similar myself once: I painted a small Beastmen army just using: black, white, and brown.
Yeah.
You can create all the nuances of brown (skin, fur, terrain, horns, whatever...) and you can paint the melee weapons with the NMM technique.
The result was THAT cool, they don't even look like they've been made with just three color.
But they are.
This taught me that: you will want to use a limited palette for a miniature or an army, to make it/them realistic, coherent, pleasant.
I personally dislike what I call the Arlequin Effect on a model: too many different colours just because there are different materials, different fabrics, different items.
All your videos are absolutely gold my friend! Love the humor too!
I love not only the content of your videos but either your editing style and script. You are very good in both
Just noticed, that your channel had a massive growth. Not long ago and you had something about 7000. Congrats, you deserved it. And thank you for content helping me to get a better painter!
I feel like Zumikito tips are a lot easier to understand and utilize than everyone else I find on youtube. They also seem to be a lot more practical.
The more vids I watch, the better their quality! This is so great! Thanks for them :)
Subbed! Very informative! RYB is the natural, true classic way of mixing colors. They ARE the primary colors, wheras their " children " that comes from mixing the three are Purple, Orange, Green.. POG. RGB is " primary " colors mostly used in media, digital stuff. Im not 100% sure why but explains maybe why alot of digital stuff use RGB + Yellow and gate out orange and purple. Just look at your XB, Nintendo controller or play a game with say only 4 classes/ characters in which you cant customize colors. And then we have CYM. Cyan, Yellow, Magenta. Used mostly in paper/ cardboard production goids etc. I might be rusty if some of all of this is 100% true though. In the end I stand by the natural, down to earth color teachings. White and Black as the " ancestors " of all colors. One reflects all, one absorbs all. RYB are primary colors, POG are secondary colors. Mixing pims with secs or secs with secs give tertiary colors like Teal ( green+ blue ) Brown ( red + green ) Amber ( orange + red ) , Violet ( blue + purple ), Grass ( yellow + green ) etc
This was amazing! I've experienced something like this after a bought like 50 colours but 90% of the time I end up using always those 8 or 10 colours. I almost never use the very specific secundary or tertiary tones, mixing the paint on the palette feels much more natural.
you said "because of boring science stuff" and I took that personally
Terrific Video. Brought me back to my Painting I class . . . first we learned value scale and then color wheel.
I love the face and the silver nmm, but the golden nmm is not nice for me. It's like you wanted to rush it cause you were bored by this exercise. But for the rest of the mini, you nailed it!
Man that is awsome job
An epic man with an exquisite beard and an excellent video, what a magical combination to receive on a friday
An important concept for artists to consider is what I like to call "pigment primaries." Some pigments are lab-made or occur in rare minerals and are not found in any other way. Mixing them with other pigments is nigh on impossible. Top on this list is greens. Hooker's green, sap green, phthalo green - it's all chemical pigment. So while this challenge only uses CMY, for the hobbyist at home - don't feel bad about adding green or some high value reds into your money saving kit.
I got used to painting with a basic crayola box of colors (about 7-9 colors across the color wheel) and mixing from there. But there is something to be said for buying a color you will need a good amount of rather than having to mix a bunch at once or multiple times.
This was a super fun video...been watching a lot of your stuff lately and I love your style, and the content is good as well...
I am painting minis sometimes with CMYK colour system, very good once you need exact colour from the picture - just blend it in proportions which you get from photoshop - easy. Thanks for the video!
Awesome video!! Great result with only 3 paints. You are realy an artist!!
Yes you can... 😏
I would love to see someone making an army in the style of Black and White movies. All miniatures just grey, black and white.
I have definitely seen monochromatic armies and BW orks!
@@Zumikito 😱😱😱😱😱 really? I never have seen one 🥺🥺🥺🥺
Absolute legend! Great videos, great beard, great guy! Will often reply unlike certain miniature painters on this platform
Well, I can see why lol, so many comments that it will reach the point where I am unable to reply to everyone, tho I still wanna answer questions
@@Zumikito yea I understand that you guys get 100's if not 1000's of comments, there are just some that never even acknowledge. Even direct question.
Golden Soflat, or Golden Matte additive. Thata a MIGHTY HUGE pink.... ohhh a GEM! It looked like something else.
Wow! That's quite a result from such a limited colour pallette.
Nice video and great effect!
Sir you have a great channel and an epic beard.
Great video as always mate
You have a video about painting with limited palette ! you got an instant like
You really need 6 to be affective. The 3 primaries, white, black and brown. That's what I have and mine look dope.
Golden makes a artist grade matte line that’s mostly single pigment paints
Thank you for not perpetuating the RBY myth! It was fine for fine arts when they wanted to work in moody colors, but omg it's horrible for vibrant painting XD
Very helpfull video! Could you please give me some advise for a yellow and blue from Vallejo for the CYMK?
I’m amazed by your excellent instructions and, of course, your beard.
I love your videos! Have tou tried golden so flats?
Light brown and yellow mare a good skin tone I'm a novice learning with my craft paints until I cop some other ones.
I do this. Only use the primaries. I get some good results
Option three, add a matte acrylic medium to the heavy body acrylic before diluting thereby creating a matte pigment paint.
Awesome, he really come out great.
Nice one as usual mate.
Got this randomly recommended, 10 seconds in and I already knew you're Czech based on the accent haha. Good job btw
amazing video, i love your style and you keep me interested. Thank you for helping me learn to paint.
wow, thats nice! Its demonstrat me soo much
Just spot on!
Great stuff friend 👏 👍
Just to letting there is another option to the golden paints the line is called Jo Sonya there Australian if you can find there heavy bodied acrylics and have really matte finish just might be hard to find putside of Australia
This was an awesome demonstration! Would it be possible to still see you paint one with the Golden colors? It's not common to see people paint minis with heavy body paints, it's something I wish more folks would demonstrate. Keep up with the great content!
Great suggestion! I think that I will get to it at some point in the future
amazing work!!!!
which would be the cyan color in vallejo model color serie?
Hey man you video are damn awesome. I'm using vallejo game color series Could you recommend me a good primer, I'm painting it on vinyl toys and I had mixed answers from my research
what are you mixing the paint on top of?
Great video. To do your darker base tones, did you add black to your colors or did you mix them with brown or other colors ? (I'm notably thinking about the dark blue of the coat)
Try using Zorn palette next time to bring the challenge a notch
Master, teach me!
Oh, wait. You're already doing that!
Excellent content, with very high production quality! Helpful, concise advice in a fun presentation, what more could we ask for? A great film for the paint hording hobby massive to reflect on, but it might limit your sponsorship opportunities from Vallejo, GW etc. 😂
Thanks mate and have a great weekend! ☀️😎🍺
This channel has about 500k too few subscribers, amazing work mate!
Great vid :) next time you should do this without black and white
Did...did you just end the "you only need 3 colours" Video with "ah..a few more are useful" ? 😂😂😂 Awesome Video tho! Crisp, short and very useful!
Thank you! :)
I'm curious to know how long it took to paint this one mini with only 3 colors and all the mixing.
5:39 what exactly is sticking out of his trousers there?
Great content as always and great beard!
Bro.... You make that look way to damn easy 😅
You mentioned a lot of colours very quickly throughout the video. I have a Age Of Sigmar starter paint set, that comes with a blue, yellow, red, and green. What other colours should I add to this? A dark blue-green, and a magenta?
That was very cool.
I'm currently looking at a company called Techno log based out of Russia. They have a line called castle craft. I'm looking at the dwarf set. Does anyone know if they are the same size as whiz kids dwarfs and reaper bones towards? I don't want to throw away my money and I have to wait a long time for it to come in the mail justify that it's not size compatible. Any insight or help would be appreciated thank you
Super cool!!!
as a noobie i thought about that too... thanks for video, as usually f**** much usefull ! díky
Amazing work
So, 5. Three primaries, black, and white. The reason? Because I still have to shell out the cash for them, even if they are not found on the color wheel.
Great video and great painting job !
Could you estimate the excess time it took you to paint with this limited palette compared to your usual one (considering you would have use NMM in both case) ?
I would say it's about the same, but can not be sure until I paint the same minis with the 2 different approaches :)
Unreal bro
Impressive
XD You looks like Darvin
yes i;ve actually don it GOLD black and Silver AKA gun metal Color SO YEAH And im not exactly a Pro painter myself i am still trying to wrap my head around The basics
yes i used a metalic paint and i realise what the video was about
Super!
Consider that subscribe button smashed! Very helpful
(now that I've actually finished the video) this is honestly so crisp. That last edge highlight was incredible ✨ the end product looked like gshade effects, but in real life, with airbrushing
I can never find cyan, magenta and yellow for sale.
and they are not high value... they are just more precise primary colors as the old color theory was calculated 500 years ago by Da Vince and we can do better now with technology on our hands.
Спасибо, за твои видео!
Nice
Waou sublime j'adore gg ^^ ^^ !! !!
Can You Paint Minis With ONLY 3 COLORS?.... and two nuances
There are two type of acrylic paint..
1. Acrylic paint for canvas
2. Acrylic paint for model
Can I use acrylic paint for canvas for colouring scale model
Can someone give me the answer please
My master.
Please paint the eldar wraithguard in ulthwe.
