Cracking video. Liked and subbed. As hobbyists we could definitely learn from your "have a go" attitude. The highlights for me (excuse the pun) were; the white ink for pre-shading and that yellow crane is gorgeous. Love your work.
Thanks, and welcome to Goobertown! I probably have more test models around here than finished models. Lots of fun experiments to make videos out of :-)
Thank you for this all-encompassing review. It inspired me to test some new things. I never used inks through the airbrush before. BTW did you ever tried to use Daler Romney’s fluorescent acrylic inks through the airbrush? Does it have the same flow and consistency as usual inks?

Hahaha "energy drink commercial at a monster truck rally." I know exactly what you mean. Thanks for watching! I'm really glad that you're liking the channel, I'll keep making these videos :-)
Awesome work, my friend. For me, the real winners were the smoothness of the liquid white pigment through the airbrush, and the vibrancy of the yellow. Paints that use granulated pigment just take so much work to get right, whereas this seems like it just wants to be sprayed! From one new channel to another, you're making amazing content! :)
I work pretty much only with inks during basecoating. Favorite stuff. One thing I love is if you've got ink left in the cup and you want to go back and pick out details like the tops of shoulders, you can mix a drop or two of white into your cup and mix it in there before going back. Prevents you from wasting ink you overestimated needing.
Wow! A+ video man. I've used some of the darker green liquitex ink through an airbrush for doing mossy/grime effects but I never even considered that something like a white ink would work so well. This is so much better than thinning white paint.
I really appreciate you taking some time to talk about airbrush safety. I feel like thats something that often goes unmentioned. From someone who lives in a small place with two cats, and just purchased my first airbrush, thanks a lot!

so you were "new to airbrush" in February, and then I watch your videos in December same year and the following month and I have say: wow. Not sure how much hours you spent to "practise" but the 100hours time lapse shows, you practised on a loooooot of models. Great development, and great motivation for someone who just started painting.
Goober is changing the game with some of these tips, these inks look like they could be fantastic for my upcoming Squig army, keep up the good work Goober.
I've used the liquitex inks mixed with some plain acrylic medium and it has worked great for glazing and creating other similar effects. The layer is translucent and also works as "glass" or "crystal" effect when used with high gloss medium.
Awesome!! I've been meaning to do some experiments like this, I definitely be giving this a shot. I've got a variety of media around here waiting for some color :-)
I just bought my very first of these, the Liquitex Deep Violet at 10:45, and I absolutely love it. This feels like it was MADE for my cheapo Harbor Freight airbrush, and I think it's probably the smoothest-to-use paint of any of the ones I've tried, even more so than the already-very-good Army Painter Air starters and Citadel Contrasts that I've tried. I absolutely intend to buy more of these inks, plus the airs and contrasts. Thank you so much.
I really love your videos. I don’t mean to take away from your ability when I say this, but your channel is very approachable. You’re not trying to be over the top, which I greatly appreciate. You’re obviously talented, but also just seem like a normal guy trying to help. Thank you so much for investing in this experiment! Keep up the fantastic work!
I had to come back to this one Brent, a brilliant tour of the ink possibilities. I've just bought a set of 6 plus BW, so tomorrow my Frostgrave Demons. Thank you for the great videos.
Thanks for showing those inks, I bought the white one for zenithal preshading, but wanted to try more colours...and now it will be easier to choose colours after I saw how they look on models.
Excellent video. It was really nice to see just how vibrant these inks are and how well they cover. I’ve previously heard about using the black and sepia tones from these ranges to make more economical Nuln oil but this was a really interesting look at wider application for these inks.
Thanks! Yeah i'm going to try to get some more use out of these colorful inks soon. I also still need to try the darker inks for making washes and doing weathering, but I've heard good things.
I have to admit that I had never thought of airbrushing models with acrylic inks but the results are outstanding. I think the Thalo Blue would work very well as a base color for a Space Marine tank or APC. The Land Raider color is close enough to the Salamander scheme that I would finish it as such. After seeing the results a wash would really set off the color schemes. I will seriously think of using this method on a Rhino model I plan to build. Thanks for sharing this interesting and helpful tutorial.
I'm glad to hear that this is giving you ideas- these inks definitely have a ton of potential. Please let me know if you end up inking that rhino or anything else! :-)
I'm so glad I decided to try out these inks. I was using Royal Talens' Amsterdam line of acrylic inks for zenithal highlighting. I was constantly getting a speckled texture at the transitions. I thought it was my technique or my airbrush that was causing the issue (I'm still a noobie painter). After switching to Liquitex, my transitions are coming out buttery smooth. Thanks for the tip!
gonna be totally honest, that Carnifex with a blue carapace looks really cool. I hope you do finish that one and use the scheme to make a small Tyranid skirmish team at the very least. Love watching your vids and this is the best one I've seen around for airbrushing so far. Honestly, your advice works for more than just miniature painting too. My fiance just doodles characters on her drawing tablet from time to time in order to practice the muscle memory. The practice she has gotten has helped her lineart feel much more alive than it used to be.
Thanks! Yeah this is an awesome technique that I need to find some excuses to use. I have some dull browns and gray inks as well, but I felt like bright colors on the day I painted these :-)
I've been watching back through your old airbrush videos as I recently got one myself, and this one got me thinking about all of the fountain pen ink I've got floating around from my last hobby. (I do still use my pens, but have put the brakes on getting new ink and paper for now😅) There are some pretty interesting iridescent inks there that might be interesting to apply. I've got one for instance that is a dark blue normally, but if it gets dense enough turns into a iridescent red
The tanks both looked amazing as you were dropping the additional highlights. I really like the Space Marine Chapter Invaders and that color scheme was getting there so quickly.
Brent - thank you for publishing your experimentation with inks. I particularly liked the tiger stripes once you hit it with the more yellow highlight.
Would love to see you do an absolute beginner's tutorial on how to start out with airbrushing. It's been something I've considered, on and off, for a couple of years now, but I've never taken the plunge. Since you seem pretty new to it as well I'd love to see you go through how you started out. Plus your videos are so nice to watch! Keep up the great work.
Well done video! This is the best trial and error type video I’ve seen for using inks through an airbrush and you’ve answered a ton of my questions. Thank you!
This was super interesting, particularly how the white ink covered a black base coat. That alone is really useful information for the future. Also, I'm envious of that Kroot model at the end. I've been trying to find that one for a while now.
That white ink changes everything doesn't it? :-) I've been very lucky with a few craigslist scores- the gentleman with the Kroot hooked me up with a whole bunch of other cool stuff (like that big eisenhorn and the white dwarf). Anyway, that Kroot is all bagged up and sitting somewhere in my goobertown roulette treasure box, I hope I get to it someday!
My absolutely FAVORITE way to do light blue is Alpha Legion style - purple shadows, cyan midtones, and greenish turquoise to light green highlights. It’s so amazing - my Black Shield has a light blue cloak of this type that is BEAUTIFUL. I may post some pics later if you’re interested.
This sounds awesome. Alpha legion hadn't crossed my mind since I picked up these inks, but that sounds like a ton of fun, thanks so much for mentioning it. I'd love to see some pictures of what you've come up with!!!
Hi Brent, I do enjoy watching your videos I may say that A lot but I am a newer mini painter. Well I have not painted models in over 20 years so I have so much to re-learn! This is a rather old video so I imagine you have solved your blue highlight conundrum. If you are still looking for an ink answer, you might try a blue that is transparent, it will layer differently than ink with the white pigment,(like some cerulean) which tends to be opaque. You can also try to use color shift to highlight, go to a violet transparent ink for shifting your blue inks to lighter or darker! Just a splash can change an image drastically so I imagine it is the same for a mini? I hope to see more and learn more from you and your channel. Take care and be safe!
Just wanted to say thanks. Being inspired by this video, I tried white ink for preshade highlighting for the first time today. It worked out just awesome!
Another thing i noticed about the Liquitex Ink(dont know about the Daler kind) but the Liquitex flows off the airbrush REALLY nice, It makes painting white parts really easy. Plus they are all really strong, They have become my go-to for painting my AT models since the colors are so bright and vibrant.
This is a great idea for just trying something out. I have issues getting started sometimes, but if I go into it with the attitude that this doesn't have to be the final product, I'd probably get more minis painted.
For a warm yellow scheme, start with a "dark pink" base coat, like of the color of Pepto Bismol but a little deeper. Then do zenithal highlighting with white. Finally, spray on a layer of transparent yellow.
@@strangetonic I might give it a shot myself in the next week or two. That sounds like a fun trick, I'm sure I could work that into a video someday :-) I have Stynyylrez dull pink airbrush primer, I might give that a try as the basecoat.
Also, Golden's line of acrylic inks are called "high flow acrylics". The sell a product called "high flow medium", which is basically clear ink. You can use that with inks in the same way that you would mix Citadel washes with Lahmian Medium, i.e. to make their color less intense.
@@GoobertownHobbies I have since gone through and watched some more of your videos. Really enjoyable! Keep the positive vibes flowing :) I now feel motivated to sit down with my Genestealer Cult for a painting and orientation meeting for the new members ;)
Thank you so much for this. If nothing else the white for Zenithal is something everyone should switch to. It was so bad for me I always have a sponge moistened with airbrush cleaner so when the tip dry/clog happens every 30-45 sec using white primer and clean and be back in business relatively quickly (as quick as you can be having to do something so often that isn't your paint job.) Thanks again!
Wow, first time on your channel, and with this video, you just jumped into my top 10 mini painting channels. And I seriously can't wait for the pigment video!
And now, having watched it all the way through, I just want to say GREAT JOB! I'm loving the long-form, easy-delivery style you have. Love the cat. Love the laid back approach and nod to Bob Ross. Just love it! Keep it up!
10:37 This is _exactly_ why I plan on rebuilding my mini paint collection with an emphasis on artist's paints and inks. (Also that bit about having a better handle on phthalo blue than a bunch of weirdly named mixtures)
Its probably been answered a dozen times since; but, bone is a good highlight to many blues that arent too electric. If I recall, Old school Alaitoc Eldar and dire avengers were tastefully highlighted with bone/blue. I may be wrong on that, but bone does work to get creamy blue highlights, likely very useful on that tyranid. Great videos, and awesome exploration of the hobby keeping fun first. I felt great watching you and wanted to carry on with my own minis! Subbed!
I was just sitting there procrastinating today, but this video really put me in the mood to some painting! got the whole night ahead of me now :) thanks for making such awesome videos!
With some of the green/blue ones, they work rather well if you want a ghostly look. Give a good layer of white first and thin the blue or green inks (you want the brighter blues and greens, even to a more yellow-green on that end) and pretty much use a heavily thinned ink and basically treat it as a wash over the thing before then picking out things for other painting.
I discovered how amazing Liquitex Acrylic Ink is a few years ago. Other than primer some models only have Liquitex on them. I consider them my best work.
@@GoobertownHobbies It's like painting with Game Air, but more pigment. If you try it as a wash it typically completely covers even watered down 10:1 it has so much pigment. I think that is why it is so great for airbrush, flows like water and covers like primer.
@@the_algorithm Nice, yeah I'd love to give it some try as just super thin paint and see what happens. I'll be careful with any wash experiments- I have plenty of washes anyway :-)
Last time I was modeling I was hand painting with Tamiya Acrylics which I think were fairly new at the time. Things have changed a lot in 20 years! Doing some research before I dive in and you see one video after another about acrylic paints, tip drying cleaning airbrushes, overspray, splattering etc. etc. Inks seem to resolve all those issues quite neatly. They also aren't any more expensive than most high end hobby spray paints. I don't understand why these acrylic inks haven't taken over the hobby world!
Way late to the party but I've found out the secret to get absolutely stellar effects from these inks is layering them: zenithal -> undercoat -> basecoat. It's insane how vibrant a red you can get from undercoating with a yellow ink first, or even undercoat with a green in the shadows then yellow zenithal and finally red to get great shadows with a slight green tint that make the red pop even more!
You're my modern Bob Ross for miniature painting. You're the only one who makes these videos without prestige and pressure, and I love it! Tha is for taking your time showing us things we didn't think of didn't have cash/time to try out.
Cool video. Im off today's to get some these inks seem ideal for the airbrush. I think if you had thinned them you would have got the transition you was looking for. It's quite surprising how well they covered.
Thanks! Yeah, thinning these is next. This experiment showed which colors REALLY need to be thinned if you're trying to do anything subtle. Good luck hunting these down, and have fun!
Oooh, I just discovered you and I am having a blast. I love me a fellow pigment head. I do watercolor too and need that pigment info to be completely happy with a color! To be honest I'd be very happy learning to paint minis on a split primary palette base and then add metal and see where I could get to with that before widening my paint collection.
I've been wanting to step into inks, so this was great to see! I remember seeing someone spraying transparent inks over an undercoat like you did, but the pre-shading was colored. (both Red and green over blue shadows with yellow highlights) I tried out the red and liked it a lot- instead of just changing values from dark to light it also changed the temperature from warm to cold. It would be neat to see you do similar experiments with colored shading.
Colored pre-shading is very interesting to me! It's definitely on my list to try- and if it turns out well I'll make a video! Someone else in the comments mentioned using pink with a white zenithal under yellow... Very intriguing...
Love love love! I'm a big fan of acrylic artist inks with a brush too. At the release of this video, Michaels has a 40% off sale going on for fine arts supplies too!!
Thanks! I almost ordered from Michaels online because of that 40% off deal, but they were only selling the inks in 2-packs. Maybe I should stock up on a few colors... I'll have to check out your channel later tonight, I'm seeing some topics that I like :-)
Watching this now. You should try this but instead of highlighting, shade it with a darker ink mixed with matte medium. I wonder if it would sharpen up the deeper recesses.
Great video and very interesting! When using the opaque inks, if you thin them down with whatever thinner you use for airbrushing, it will help with the transparency and keep the pre-shade. As for blue, you could always use a bone/khaki color to highlight it if you want to do something different. Again, great video!
Glad you liked it, and thanks for the tips! There's a whole lot of stuff I want to try once I start thinning down these inks :-) I'll try the bone too!
Damn You! Now I have an assortment of inks coming my way for use on my armies! I need to stop watching your super-awesome videos! They inspire me waay too much! :-)
Thank you for your video using the inks. For the army painter paints ( I am sure you did this ) but when you first open the paint to remove the excess medium they put in the bottle for shelf life. If you don’t and just mix the paint it will end up super splotchy. If you already have opened and let it stand a couple of days the extra medium will separate and will be able to remove some of it. I have had good luck with thin orc blood ( 2 coats coverage over black primer ) I like it for base of demon skin

@@brie.cheese_x Oh yeah, that cloak is awesome! - thanks for sharing. Where did you get the nameplate on the base? That's a really fun touch too.
This is a great suggestion, I picked up some acrylic inks at the local art shop to try out on some new Daemons!
Nice! Have fun and let us know how they turn out :-)
Hi Brent, I do enjoy watching your videos I may say that A lot but I am a newer mini painter.
Awesome! That white ink is some really good stuff. :-)
Great video! Helped me decide to get a set of the liquitex inks.
it's fun stuff!!! :-)
I really need to push myself my airbrush. This has been very inspiring, thank you.
I'm glad to hear that! I'm still learning the airbrush myself. Have fun airbrushing!!! :-)
For a warm yellow scheme, start with a "dark pink" base coat, like of the color of Pepto Bismol but a little deeper. Then do zenithal highlighting with white. Finally, spray on a layer of transparent yellow.
Interesting! I've never heard of this before, I really want to try it. Do you have a picture or a video to check out?
I don't have photos that show each step, but I could get started on a sample miniature for that purpose.
@@strangetonic I might give it a shot myself in the next week or two. That sounds like a fun trick, I'm sure I could work that into a video someday :-) I have Stynyylrez dull pink airbrush primer, I might give that a try as the basecoat.
@@GoobertownHobbies I Googled "Stynyylrez dull pink", and on my screen it looks like the perfect "dark Pepto Bismol" color.
Also, Golden's line of acrylic inks are called "high flow acrylics". The sell a product called "high flow medium", which is basically clear ink. You can use that with inks in the same way that you would mix Citadel washes with Lahmian Medium, i.e. to make their color less intense.
I recently also trying the DR white acrylic ink, it is awesome, it is my new go to white color, same reason as you.
Really love your video and your channel! You have such an easy-going and humble approach that makes your videos really enjoyable. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I'm glad that people are liking these, I'll keep making them :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I have since gone through and watched some more of your videos.
You bet! Yeah I was pretty stoked about that white ink :-) Have fun with it!
This is so interesting and pleasant to watch! Thank you for continuing to create content.
Thanks so much for watching! I'll keep making content in this genre :-)
Man these thalos!!! I am so jealous. Also very useful video, will give these a shot, especially the white ink
Hehe, I actually used a few of those talos in a game last month :-) Have fun with the inks, that white ink really is amazing!
Thanks bought the white liquidex ink and it works like a charm!
Wow, first time on your channel, and with this video, you just jumped into my top 10 mini painting channels. And I seriously can't wait for the pigment video!
Thanks, welcome aboard! I'll have to move the pigment video higher on my list (and brush up on some inorganic chemistry) :-)
one of the best videos out there!! thanks a lot!
Woohoo! Glad to see you crank out another high quality video!
And now, having watched it all the way through, I just want to say GREAT JOB! I'm loving the long-form, easy-delivery style you have. Love the cat. Love the laid back approach and nod to Bob Ross. Just love it! Keep it up!
Thanks for checking it out! and thanks for the encouragement :-)
Great video Brent! I really appreciate your style and approach to explaining the products. I'm looking forward to seeing more tests.
Love that you did an inks video! Can't believe I missed it!
I just picked up some winsor and Newton inks for glazing but I will definitely pick up more now I've seen this
Excellent!! Have fun :-)
very relaxing video, makes me want to get an airbrush and give it a try with pre shading
It's definitely fun- think about it! :-)
This was an awesome video, I love the “go for it “ attitude. Keep up the great work Brent! Liked and subbed.
Hey thanks Jeff! Welcome aboard :-)
10:37 This is _exactly_ why I plan on rebuilding my mini paint collection with an emphasis on artist's paints and inks. (Also that bit about having a better handle on phthalo blue than a bunch of weirdly named mixtures)
I just want to say that I have enjoyed this video immensely - especially sciency bits. I am waiting for a followup on pigments. Great job!
Thanks! The pigment episode will be fun :-)
i had some liquiitex ink and was hesitating if i can use for my miniature, now definitely i will give it a try... thanks for the video. Awesome!
Loving your videos, Brent. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Doug! That means a lot to me, I'll keep making these :-)
Its probably been answered a dozen times since; but, bone is a good highlight to many blues that arent too electric. Subbed!
FW dark green is defiantly on my short list for my Eldar army. Looks great.
Between this and the Grot speed painting. I'm now subscribed. Great stuff!
Welcome aboard!!!
I was just sitting there procrastinating today, but this video really put me in the mood to some painting! got the whole night ahead of me now :)
thanks for making such awesome videos!
Omg this is funny this popped up now! Ive thought of this years ago but never tried to actually do this! Love it!
It's worth trying :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies i will for sure with gundam models i build!
Interesting video. I’m going to steal using white ink to zenithal prime minis with an airbrush. Thanks!
9:02 the Dark eldar vehicles especially would look awesome with the scheme. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yeah, that one really jumped out didn't it! Believe me, I'm thinking about it :-)
I discovered how amazing Liquitex Acrylic Ink is a few years ago. Other than primer some models only have Liquitex on them. I consider them my best work.
This stuff is great!!! Have you done much brush work with them?
@@GoobertownHobbies It's like painting with Game Air, but more pigment. If you try it as a wash it typically completely covers even watered down 10:1 it has so much pigment. I think that is why it is so great for airbrush, flows like water and covers like primer.
@@the_algorithm Nice, yeah I'd love to give it some try as just super thin paint and see what happens. I'll be careful with any wash experiments- I have plenty of washes anyway :-)
I've been doing this for a few years but with lacquer paint instead of ink. I'll definitely experiment with those at some point in the future.
Lacquer paint eh? I'll have to look into this! Thanks for watching & dropping a comment :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies They're great paint for airbrushing but keep in mind that they're toxic so mask, gloves, and good ventilation are a must.
@@duerf5826 Good call- safety first.
Awesome video. Just what I needed.
Sweet- hope it helps!
you are really channeling Bob Ross here. Great and inspiring vid.
Thanks!! That's high praise :-) I'll try to keep making stuff with this vibe.
Huge shout outs this video! Huge colors! Huge learning! Keep it up dude.
Thanks! This was tons of fun :-)
I really found this informative as I’m a newbie on the airbrush
Glad to hear it :-) I'm a newbie also, but the basics are actually pretty easy once you get going. Have fun!
Your videos inspired me to buy an airbrush, ive been experimenting with a zenith highlights on some poxwalkers... really happy with the results!
Interesting video! Given me the idea to thin and airbrush some GW glaze to use in similar fashion
Give it a shot and let me know how it works :-)
Just got my self that white fw ink from Michael's.... hyped to try it out
I'll have to check out your channel later tonight, I'm seeing some topics that I like :-)
@@GoobertownHobbies I stocked up :)
@@CraftsAndMinis Hahahaha, niceeeeeee
This video is awesome and you are awesome. Thanks for making it!
Glad you like it, thanks for watching!
Great vid. I'm sure i need inks in my life now!
