3:58 It's a small but powerful trick Rob is pulling here. Positive reinforcement in its purest form.
And also it sounds good. When you play something that sounds good (or you're part of something that sounds good) you get a lot of encouragement and excitement
Plus, having someone else playing "offbeat" (I know Rob isn't doing that, but you see what I mean) helps you focus on the beat and sets your mind for "whatever the hell is happening, I MUST keep on playing that beat". My old drum teacher used to do that all the time: "Oooh let's see if you really learned paradiddles" and started playing the cowbell way off beat just to distract me. When quarantine is over, Rob somehow needs to get on Bon Appétit's channel to do Back-to-Back Chef with Carla. He'd teach her how to jam, she'd teach him how to make jam, it would be awesome.

I’ve followed both of these men individually for years now, but never would I have thought to see them both in one of the most ambitious crossovers to date
When I first started learning to play it was way too structured, more focus on the technique than the enjoyment of sharing music, I changed my teacher, my new teacher was way more focussed on the joy of playing and encouraged me to spread my wings a bit. Technique is, of course, important but ultimately the enjoyment is what brings you back to any instrument. Having someone play alongside you on a guitar suddenly opens up the possibilities and actually forces you up your game, in a good way! Always great to see someone learn a new skill and enjoy doing it! 😀
As someone who's only played drums like 5 times in my life,I am impressed. The coordination isn't easy Edit: Also, now Jonas can drum for the White Stripes
Wow. This speaks leaps and bounds about your character. Me personally, I respond so well to that level of teaching. They way you were patient with him and broke it down step by step, and jammed with him. Even though it was simple beats, you kept jamming with him, and by the looks of it, never left him behind, or played over him, but more so played with him. Also, your excitement for him learning, or picking up on something is everything to a person who is learning. Idk about him, but I get nervous, so to feel someone else's excited energy, over something that veterans look at as simple is everything. You're a great teacher Rob!
One of my biggest compliments I've received was from a musician friend of mine who saw me like finger drumming along with a song, and he was like, "Hey, you'd probably make a decent drummer!" I'm someone with zero musical ability and I was like, "Whaa?" Definitely going to try this drum beat next time we hang out lol.
If somehow you can do an interview with some video game composers that would be awesome. The obvious fit would be Mick Gordon (DOOM, Wolfenstein...), why not Chris Christodoulou (Deadbolt, Risk of Rain). A lot of video game composer are more on the electronic side, but these two also know how to make great scores with guitars and drums!
It would be a definite stretch, but I feel like the top tier choice would be Koji Kondo. I mean who doesn’t know the Mario/Zelda theme? It would take some miraculous luck, but man I’d cry tears of joy.

Typical drummer.
@@HeRo-le4my we all were that way at the beginning but damn, it was some time ago and it seems weird seeing this with other people
It's like holding a wooden spoon..
It’s like that scene from talladega nights lol. “I don’t know what to do with my hands”
The feeling i get when i see someone experiencing a jam session for the first time is indescribable. I love it man
"You've heard of '8 Minute Abs'?" I died. His timing was excellent. Which is fitting for a drum video.
This is so fun to watch. Jonas definitely had natural rythm. Thanks so much for this video, its a treasure. We will all miss Jonas.
Really interesting how he managed to keep some of his "mistakes" on beat. The natural talent and beginner mess ups gave some of the parts a pretty nice groove.
Based from my knowledge in music, his improvement on learning drums is super amazing. Yes i agree with rob, he's natural. R.I.P Jonas
RIP Jonas, such a good dude
When quarantine is over, Rob somehow needs to get on Bon Appétit's channel to do
Back-to-Back Chef with Carla. He'd teach her how to jam, she'd teach him how to make jam, it would be awesome.
Yeahh... Good idea
Yeah... About Bon Appétit...
@@andyn510 2020 happened at that comment.
thats crazy i actually just watched a tetris tournament with this guy in it yesterday
Haha not so strange, UA-cam will literally see your interest in Tetris as interest in Jonas
its cool that he had the chance to try drum in his life ... Thank You Jonas.
Rob, you've misspelled his name. He is JONÁS from the glorious city of ALBACETE
VIVA ALBACETE Y VIVA IBAI
Is he actually from albacete???? :O
@@Twat2024 no its a meme that some spanish broadcaster pulled on all of spain. They said he was 60 years old too. Lol
R.I.P. Jonas!
BOOM! Tetris for Jonas!
Boom, drumset for NubbinsGoody. What a fantastically random and unexpected crossover.
Rest in power jonas, it's so nice to see him here enjoying himself with Rob by playing music
More of this please. This guy was super cool and it would be good to see more non musicians being introduced to this wonderful world of ours.
Just returning to this video.
Rip Jonas.
Died from a sudden medical emergency.
You will be missed.
His death still bothers me. No actual cause...
Rest In Peace Jonas. Hope wherever you end up is the best. We’re gonna miss you man.
The moment Jonas gained his confidence was pretty awesome.
R.I.P. Jonas. You will be sorely missed.
What happened??
Jonas is obviously extremely talented, but also Rob is a brilliant teacher! Such a fun to watch them both!
Jonas: "I play a little bit of Tetris"
Tetris history: "You sure bout that bud?"
I love the feeling of watching other people make discoveries and learn stuff on instruments. It’s so wholesome and shows how anyone can get started with music and much of a universal language it is. Also helps that Rob is a fantastic teacher.
I’ve followed both of these men individually for years now, but never would I have thought to see them both in one of the most ambitious crossovers to date
"The transitions are the final boss."
Oh Jonas, I wish there was a final boss in drumming. It just keeps going.
The coordination isn't easy
Edit: Also, now Jonas can drum for the White Stripes
I’m a huge NES tetris fan. This is the last crossover I expected
Dude has naturally good timing and that makes all the difference - awesome vid!
Rob: we will start really slow
Jonas: *getting it right away*
One of my biggest compliments I've received was from a musician friend of mine who saw me like finger drumming along with a song, and he was like, "Hey, you'd probably make a decent drummer!" I'm someone with zero musical ability and I was like, "Whaa?"
Definitely going to try this drum beat next time we hang out lol.
Musicians love to explain things. Just try not to ruin his rig lol
Guys the joy on your faces was a real joy for me too ! Thx for the vid' and may Sir Jonas rest in peace ! Bisous from a french Tetris/guitar player !
Maxime an interview with Lena Raine would be so freaking cool
It would be a definite stretch, but I feel like the top tier choice would be Koji Kondo. I mean who doesn’t know the Mario/Zelda theme? It would take some miraculous luck, but man I’d cry tears of joy.
Martin ODonnell would make my entire year
Chris christodoulou is an absolute genius and I love him
Frank Klepacki and Alexander Brandon!!
BRO the way he opened the hihat in perfect sync with Rob getting louder at 17:40 was kinda unreal
EXACTLY
honestly such a good idea for a series, like I know it a long shot but having such communities to collide together and make some fun happen. Like I would love to see bjergsen from TSM learning some immediate guitar/drums as he briefly mentioned wanting to get more into music.
And the other day, he had a MASSIVE Church rocking to Metal through the MIDI input on a MEGA Church Organ!
FreeSM
Im so glad to see this! Ive been subbed to rob and jonas both for years and never ever imagined this happening! Haha, ive been dabbling in guitar for over a decade and been a hardcore tetris player for about 3 years now! Good job everybody who helped make this happen!!
As a percussionist and a Tetris player, this video is the best crossover episode ever!
First found the video of you learning to play Tetris with the excellent Jonas, trying to pick up some pointers... then found you taunt him basic drum skills what a treat! Finding classic tetris 1-2 years ago and getting INTO the 2018 tournament, and trying to recently learn keyboard this is amazing crossover.
The joy of newfound skill and music you and Jonas made together here was simply magic, huge happy grin! I hope you do more like this!
Hearing Rob play jazzy slap guitar makes me wish he would do an "album in a day" with Adam Neely and Shawn Crowder in addition to Andrew Huang. That could be amazing having drums, bass, guitar, and synth at the same time.
I love how music can bring people together like this, I think if your bored at home during these times and are able to, pick up an instrument just have fun! You got one life, so live it to the fullest!❤️
Love how your channel is evolving into this wholesome "Musician connects with everyone" kind of affair Rob, keep up the awesome.
RIP Jonas - you've inspired many
That is cool and my final inspiration, I always wanted to play drums since I was a teenager, but circumstances did not let me (money and place/space) so I just move to the cords, now I am a bass player, and I am 34, but I after seen him who is 36 doing so well even without playing it before, (I did twice) now I have my final inspiration to fulfil my teenage dream, now I know i can do it, thanks 💪🏾🥁
been a drummer for 20+ years, and seeing this really takes me back to the first day i tried it. That feeling of excitement you get when you realize you did it for the first time is unforgettable. Plus im pretty psyched to see someone give it a go and really seem to enjoy themselves. Awesome video, and nicely done jonas!
R.I.P to the absolute legend Jonas
That's so great to see people you're watching on UA-cam making some stuff together and just jamming
I really enjoyed watching that video
Too bad I'm learning something new about Jonas only when he passed away
Rest in peace Jonas Neubauer
Thank you for everything
Man, he really did pick that up really fast. He had a great teacher though. RIP Jonas.
I love the Joy he had when playing. Incredible to watch, thank you for this great video!
this video is literally my two favorite universes colliding.
i love it.
You're a very beautiful person for being so patient and teaching him drums. The joy in his eyes playing with you he will never ever forget
I love this. So fun to see
Rest in peace my friend
The huge smile he has when he notices he's finally playing just fills my heart with joy honestly.
