  • Just a fast video Explaining #40 chain sizes and what it means! Seems many have no clue what MX and H values stand for. Is there a difference from a 410 or #42? Why do they call it that?
#40 Chain General Term grouping all the sizes!
It can be Expressed as #40-1 #41 410 To which all are the same chain! So this is where it starts to get confusing for some! Here is a fast cheat sheet!
You may wonder? Why are some chains grouped with others of same number but be so much wider? Like below!
41 410 # 40-1 Almost Always 9/64 pin Unless Custom Purpused! (such as half link)
41 415 # 40-15 Almost Always 9/64 pin Unless Custom Purpused! (such as half link)
    --------------------------------------
    (# 42 pins length ranges from 1/2 to 5/8)
    42 420 # 40-2 Non Commercial 9/64 pins or industrial use 3/16 pins
    42 428 # 40-28 Non Commercial 9/64 pins or industrial use 3/16 pins
    ------------------------------------
After # 42 Chain they get grouped by pin length only Example: # 43 3/4- 1 1/4 lengths)
    43 430 # 43-3 Always has 3/16 pins 3/4" length
    43 445 # 43-45 Always has 3/16 pins 1-1/4" length (Double Linked chain)\
    --------------------------------------
Everything after 43 is 2 to 5 rows of #40 links for industrial specialty items up to 3.5 inches width.
Normally used in areas where a low profile high strength chain is required. such as between conveyor belts of between shafts and such. It can be found in some Engine timing setups and Shredder drive lines.
Reason mainly the Value goes up 4x spacing between the two inner plates! Reason the second number goes up a Size for that category under #!40 chain Is due to pin size Value and how much it can hold in force as a result! Each time pin steps up in size! second number will follow! After #43 Dia no longer changes but the Length will change in 3/16 increments!
I just hope it helps to explain what most ask and why and how they come up with all these screwy numbers for the same type of chain. In a nutshell pretty much a #48 even at 3 inches wide! will have the identical sprocket teeth profile as a #41 chain that has a 1/8 wide sprocket teeth profile.

Hi sir, it seems like you know your stuff so I have a minibike and there’s a really thick 40 chain on this Mini Bike and it has a 40 sprocket. I’m changing the sprocket same thickness as the 40 but I’m changing it to a 35 would the 40 chain fit that because I’m getting so confused people are just telling me no it won’t fit you need a 35 chain. ?

Hi sir I have a question it looks like you really know your stuff. I have a minibike motorized minibike and it’s set up right now with a 40 chain. It’s a thick chain and a 40 sprocket. I wanna downsize the sprocket to 35 sprocket will the 40 chain fit I mean, it looks like it would fit, but I asked a few people and they said no you need a number 35 chain but 35 chain is way too small and the sprocket thick like the sprocket ?

So I have a 35 rear sprocket and a 41 front, is there a chain that will fit both at once so I don’t have to buy a new centrifugal clutch

No chain can fit that. #35 is 3/8 spacing and #41 is 1/2 spacing "pitch". You would have to buy a 40 or 41 rear sprocket to use your clutch.

Grinding off the link so it's thin enough to peel it off with a flat screw driver...

428 and 428h, cuz i live in brazil and here everything is over priced, i saw a 428h in a promotion for about 8$, and bought, just waiting it to arrive. Those 420h here are 12 to 18$ 😅

Sadly will not. They require 415 chains and sprockets.
