Thanks for sharing! I agree, the 421 is a excellent microphone. It seems the 7B and 20 get most of the “attention” while the 421 quietly goes about being used for recordings and live productions everywhere for a good reason…
Much appreciated. We have heard the “421 sound” on records spanning nearly all genres for decades… A great microphone to have in the locker in my opinion.
Glad to see you did a demo using the MD421 on a bass guitar. Thank you! I'm curious about the mike placement you did. How far back did you place the mike? Was it directly on the cone or between the cone and the speaker? @askdrkt
Thanks, bass doesn't seem to get much coverage in mic reviews imo and whether for recording or live performance, bass is not only about DI... For the tests I position the mic at 8 inches away just off the edge of the cone. While we can generally achieve more punch straight at the cone or a darker tone towards the the edge of the speaker, I place the mic just off the cone's edge for the demo to help show the transient response of the mic while balancing enough lower frequencies to test the microphone's low end extension. Ideally I would do multiple test locations, but these videos (and this response by now lol) tend to be a bit long. Thanks for asking and I hope this helps out!.. Cheers!
Perfect video. He covered every point I needed to learn about this mic. I appreciate His talent and askdrtk keep the video moving forward quickly, Awesome! Now all I need to get is the MD421 compared to the e945 which costs less.
I use the 421 for radio production, commercials. Love it. Other great mics too, RE-20, SM-7, etc. I just love the 421

Exactly!! Good point. I like the SM5 too, but very hard to find, AND expensive!
Ah yes, would love to have an SM5 and I have always wanted an RCA 77-D (probably will get a DX at some point, but again, expensive…)
Woah! Hey, me too! 27 years in, and we still, have 421's in the Master Control's of a few of our stations! NICE!!!
Radio Ga-Ga, baby!!!
I love the clarity and brightness of the 421 compared to those other dynamics.
Fantastic review. Thank you.
8:40 warmth with clarity. Well said.

Love it placed near the bridge of an acoustic guitar panned hard left with the right side being a sdc on the 12th fret
