Thank you! I recently went to a seminar at my college for tips on landing a job with the state and this refreshed the notes I had taken from then. Writing resumes are a real kick in the ass!
What if you worked mostly in retail and have little accomplishments? That’s my resume struggle. Like how do you make years of retail experience look good? My resume consists of a cringe “career statement or cover letter” Core Competencies and then it’s job duties. I could put my linkedIn but again I feel it’s for more accomplished people in their careers. I struggle with my resume and things like LinkedIn because I lack or I feel I lack accomplishments. Though I know I contributed to the companies I worked at. 😞
It seems to me like LinkedIn is designed for business people. I tried a month of LinkedIn Premium for free and found it very difficult to find people who would be hiring me. I am sort of in your situation where I have small accomplishments but nothing major. I have some jobs but nothing major and no promotions.
Thank you! I would love to see some resumes for healthcare workers, especially those of us with graduate degrees, where we have done a lot of internships and practicums and previous volunteer experience.
@ProfessorHeatherAustin awesome! It seems like most things are geared towards tech or sales, but in healthcare/social work, we have so many internships, practicums, and previous jobs/volunteer work that are relevant. It's hard to make it two pages, let alone one! 😬
Thank you. These tips are so helpful. Question thou, I’ve been a SAHM for 5 yrs hence there’s a long gap from the last time I worked as a relationship manager. Should I still include the “title” from yrs back or just leave it blank since I am currently unemployed? Thank you
Great channel. Useful tips. Thank you. I am your new subscriber. 😊 This is just a funny observation- all the companies you named where you helped your clients to get top jobs are the companies that had major layoffs recently. 😁
I have had different executive roles for years, MD, GM and BDM mostly. I find it difficult to give a specific name /professional title. Any tips how I can present the resume content for different roles without limiting myself to one title or target as I am open to any of this positions. Thank you.
I’m helping my friend now with a résumé, and I can tell you as a civilian myself I found the whole process of trying to help him bring everything into the résumé was a little intimidating. I love what you said about not really summarizing your career description, but point out your highlights. So the question I have for you is, how many pages was your résumé when you were finally done? I find that trying to condense his stuff. I feel like I’m taking away all the important parts, or the aspects of what he did. But I can tell you this is been a fun ride. He has or months until retirement and we’re only on day one.
Thanks for sharing great info. Question - you mentioned not including your full address for one, to avoid unconscious bias. What do you think about the detailed ethnicity and disability question that every employer seems to ask on their applications these days? It is positioned as to show their diversity and nondiscrimination efforts. But it just comes off feeling boxed in and judged. And if a person chooses not to answer, which is always an option it almost seems pointless because there is the unstated assumption that a person has a disability or minority if they don’t answer.
Great question! In general, employers are not allowed to ask about disabilities on a job application. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits employers from asking about an applicant's disability before a job offer is made. There are some exceptions to this. For example, an employer is allowed to ask about an applicant's ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation. I hope helps! Let me know if you need further clarification.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin wow well that perplexes me even more because in recent applications (almost all) at the end there is the usual disclaimer statement about equal opportunity and diversity. Then there is this question that ask if you identify as a person with a disability. They list a whole bunch of symptoms that are examples of a disability (from clinical depression, ptsd, learning disabilities, autoimmune and heart disease) just to name a few. Then they ask if you identify. It’s multiple choice giving you the option to say (yes, no, prefer not to say, etc.). The other question is what race do you identify as…. I just don’t see how these questions are fair and even relevant.
@@ProfessorHeatherAustin Apparently a lot of employers these days think the laws don't apply to them and asides from all the disability and race questions, have the gall to ask how people identify, what their sexual persuasion is as though it has anything whatsoever to do with one's ability to do the job, all in the name of DEI, diversity, equity and inclusion. Were they not so blatantly discriminating against people, they'd have no reason whatsoever to ask such questions. Don't believe me, go and apply for a job with GoFundMe as one example and see the questions applicants are asked. They and others deserve to get sued for this abomination.
Hi Sarah! You don't want to include references on a resume. Type up a separate sheet with your references name and contact information. Then provide it when the employer asks. Thanks for watching.
2 questions (1) can we keep it as word or can we save it as pdf - will the ATS system read it? (2)In my country photo is required, can we insert one or is it gonna mess up with the ATS? thanks :)
You should have a word and a pdf version of the resume, the word will go to the ATS and the pdf goes to the recruiter. Some countries require photos on resumes but it won’t be a problem if you need one.

What happens if the metrics work against you for making your career portfolio Look too small or too big for example if you use finance if you say you work for an organisation work 30,000 as apposed to organisation worth 3 million pounds
Great question Andrea! When including metrics in your career portfolio, it's important to use accurate and relevant information that accurately reflects your experience and achievements. Be transparent about the size and scale of the organization you worked for, avoid exaggerating your experience, and focus on highlighting relevant experience and qualifications. Remember that metrics are just one aspect of your career portfolio and should be used in conjunction with other information such as job responsibilities, accomplishments and skills.

Going from a 15 year career in the federal government to a private sector career is hard. Resumes for government jobs need to be loaded and heavy with information where in the private sectors you need to say a lot with a little.

If your name is LeSean, DeSean, DeMarcus, etc., drop the first two letters. Why? You don't want the company to racially profile you before the interview; it's kind of like don't put a picture of yourself on your resume.
