I totally forgot that i used your template until a friend of mine asked me about my template! UA-cam resume and your face came up lol I was like ,yess it was her! I am looking to get into the IT/Tech field with little to no experience in that field. I do currently work for a tech company but my current job is more customer service based. Before that position I did hardware repair on some video video equipment. I feel like that would be laughed at. Is it acceptable to list an eight-year hiatus from employment as, "Spent some time getting my head together"?

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin
      @ProfessorHeatherAustin  Рік тому

      Hi there! Great question. It may not be the best way to describe an eight-year hiatus from employment on your resume or during a job interview. This type of language may not be professional and could raise questions or concerns for potential employers. Instead, it would be better to describe the period as a personal leave of absence or a break in employment. If necessary, you can provide a brief explanation for the time off, such as for personal or family reasons, but avoid getting into too much detail unless asked. The goal is to present a clear and concise picture of your work history to potential employers. Hope this helps!

  • @nicoinformatics
    @nicoinformatics 2 роки тому +6

    I can attest to the content of this video and the important points, it's pretty spot on. The one thing that other "resume tips" seems to get the wrong idea is the point that you need to create a "good looking" resume from a design perspective. And as someone who has been working as a HR lead, recruiter and Project Manager for the past 10 years and I have taken care of well over 100 resumes personally and oversees over 5000 applicants over my entire career on multiple different companies is to tell you how wrong this is.
    I can assure you, unless you're applying for a designer/artist position, no HR will ever give a single crap about the design of your resume. Quite infact, a "pretty" looking resume gives out red flags if you don't do the contents properly, because if that's the case it may further emphasizes that you don't have anything to offer in relation to the job so you had to "compensate" it with pretty designs. And as Heather mentioned, your employment, career and skills summary in a paragraph or two on the header is about the single most important thing you can put on your summary, bar none. No HR will ever read everything everytime when we have dozens or hundreds of resumes on our desk or email. We look at the header and short list it. And we read the whole thing LATER.
    Also, yes, quantify, summarize and describe the results of your experiences and achievements. Be confident, and list EVERYTHING that you deem appropriate to put on a resume. Have designed a website for your gaming community? write that down, been a reddit moderator with 100k+ members? write that down. It matters. A lot of people seems to think non-professional experiences don't matter for job applications. They are WRONG. I don't know you, the HR people don't know you, these small bits of achivements goes a long way of letting us know you more. And be confident, no company will ever hire someone who does not believe in themselves.

      Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about your business in 2020. When discussing your past experience, it's okay to mention that you were the owner. Being a business owner for 25 years means you've accumulated a wealth of skills and knowledge. Employers can view this as a testament to your leadership, resilience, and versatility. Just be prepared to articulate the transferrable skills you've gained and how they can benefit your potential new employer. Whether you frame it as being an owner or as someone who worked there, the key is to emphasize the value you can bring to a new role based on your extensive experience. Hope this helps!

      Hello and welcome to my channel! Transitioning from a long-standing career can indeed be challenging, but it's absolutely possible. With your background as a Physician Assistant, you have a wealth of skills that can be valuable in many fields, including case management. It's all about positioning these skills in the right way. I recommend starting by tailoring your resume to highlight transferable skills from healthcare to case management. Consider skills like patient coordination, communication, and problem-solving, which are crucial in both fields. Also, my toolkit has resources and templates that might be beneficial for someone in your situation. It's designed to guide job seekers through career changes. Remember, networking is invaluable. Connect with professionals in the field you're aiming for, and gather insights about what they're looking for in candidates. Stay persistent and positive! Best wishes on your career transition! ❤😊

    So do you actually send the resume template free? Because I tried to get it from your site with two different e-mail addresses and all I got was a "progress bar" indicating that the e-mail was "80% done being sent" and a page full of links where I could buy things from you. I don't want to buy things from you, I wanted the template you were offering. It's been hours since I attempted to get the template and nothing has arrived. Don't advertise giving something for free if there's a condition like a required purchase.

How do you list your 3 key skills and what are the proper words for the career objective sentences? I wouldn't want to use the wrong buzzwords, fluff, or cliches.

    Where would the pt work and freelance work go in the resume? I had one independent contracting job that I fell back on during moves and layoffs. It's unrelated to my primary profession, and often times I feel if I include it, it throws off my chances, but if I don't, it can get thrown off during an interview. Please let me know what your thoughts are.

    • @ProfessorHeatherAustin
      @ProfessorHeatherAustin  Рік тому +1

      Great question! Whether to include your part-time or freelance work in your resume will depend on how relevant it is to the position you're applying for. If the work is directly related, include it under the "Work Experience" section. If it's not directly related, include it under "Additional Experience" or a similar section. Be sure to present the information in a way that highlights your relevant experience and qualifications for the job. Hope this helps!

      Thanks for sharing! Age discrimination can be a challenge when looking for employment. However, it is illegal in many countries, including the United States, to discriminate against a job candidate based on their age. If you believe you have faced age discrimination, you can file a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in the United States.
      In terms of improving your chances of getting hired, it can be helpful to focus on highlighting the value that your experience and skills bring to the job. Emphasize your strengths and achievements and show how you can contribute to the success of the company. Additionally, consider networking and reaching out to recruiters who specialize in your industry and can help match you with job opportunities that are a good fit for you.
