Hey guys! My husband and I are starting an indoor microgreen farm in Sanger, TX, and I just wanted to say that your videos have been an incredible source of information for our start-up. Thank you so much for the wonderful information that you share.
I use all of these same Barrina lights on my grow shelves. In testing these lights I found that the PAR output of the cheapest lights was more than doubled by removing the frosted plastic diffuser. Doing so voids the warranty of course, but I now routinely remove the diffusers from all the lights that have a frosted diffuser. Also, the blurple lights ship with optional reflectors. Using the reflectors significantly increases the PAR output of the blurples.
I will try the reflectors on the next set of tests! I have been waiting to pull the diffusers off until I finish the current experiments. I am going to do that and see how the 3 non-diffuser compares to the 6 with diffusers. Should be cool! Thanks for the suggestion!
trying to chase down these pinkish lights, but having trouble finding, Barrina, 42W, can only find the magenta grow lights, do you have a link or are they no longer supplying? thanks, good tip on removing diffusers... greg . homegrownmicrogreens

Do the T8 and T5 even matter anymore, now that they are LED? It isn't like they run on a ballast like flourescent bulbs and the T--- followed by a number only means the width of the bulb. I don't know why they continue to use that information other than which new bulbs fit in what fixtures, but there are not many fixtures T8 and larger.
Agreed! That’s why I assumed they were all T5... the T8’s are slightly thicker, but just barely compared to the T5. Like you said too, they don’t need the ballasts anymore so not sure why it’s broken into those classes still.
I was the person thought they were too far from the light last time you did a lighting test. Nice to see you do the measurement from shelf, tray, and plant.
@@OnTheGrow Glad you did. I just couldn't see the distance in the video so I thought maybe you didn't know. I am sure you get plenty of comments like that on your videos. But it is good to add it to the videos and if I can make a suggestion.... Maybe add the reason you discuss the distance to the light, so people know for their own purposes. Not everyone knows that the distance to the light can greatly effect the growth. Thanks for the reply.
@@robertm4050 what would you say is the perfect distance for my lights to be from my plants? I have them pretty high (12" or so) above plants right now but they seem to grow fine.
@@mofomoco I would say less than 6 inches, but older bulbs can get really hot so you may want more distance. Higher end bulbs don't need to be as close as the cheaper newer ones. You might want to look at the directions that came with your light.
The PAR meter only measures visible light and not ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), both of which can be beneficial to plant growth. This shows in the results in that the blurple light had the highest yield but the second lowest PAR measurement. The blurple lights are not really full spectrum but actually multi spectrum and have fallen out of favor, at least with growers of "medicinal" plants, as problems with plants are harder to detect under the pinkish light. An interesting test would be to duplicate this test but with white lamps of equal wattage with color temperatures of 6500K, 5000K, 3500K, and 2700K. The lower the K number, the higher the amount of red in the light spectrum. Great channel and nice comparison tests, keep it up.
@@ashtanga2000 - The Quantum boards in this case would be overkill. Digikey sells LED printed circuit board arrays from Samsung, Seoul, and Bridgelux. They are available in lengths if 280 mm, 560 mm, & 1120 mm, or roughly 11", 22", & 44" and in widths of around an inch. The Quantum boards use the Samsung 561 or now 301b LEDs as do these Samsung strips. These arrays are also available in several color temperatures and are extremely efficient providing from 140 to 200+ lumen per watt. The inexpensive LED shop lights that I use for starting vegetables provide only 112 lumen per watt. A diy'er could easily make super efficient LED grow lamps suitable for micro greens using these parts. The expensive parts are the constant curremt power supplies and potentially required aluminum heat sinks The electric bill is a factor to be considered for commercial micro green or other growers.
Thanks for the support! We are actually about to start a test where we use a light that can operate in different temperatures and we are going to compare what your suggesting! It will be 6500K, 5000k and 3500K I believe. It only has three modes so we will see how it turns out!

Soon to be new grower here trying currently under the impression that microgreens are optimally grown with PPFD of 320-440 µmol/m²/s of primarily red and blue, but at least some green. Advice on initial light purchasing considerations or product recommendations?
Very nice! It's interesting that even though the bottom three had the highest yield, the profit margin on the top shelf totally blows away the other three... half the running cost and not too far behind in yield. The equipment cost was much lower, too. As far as appearance difference, another day of growth may have mitigated that.
We completely agree! It's pretty amazing what the three 20watt LED's can do in terms of growth for cost. As you upgrade you operation, you can easily add more lights to each shelf if needed.
The cost was for electricity only I believe, not the seeds, mat, and time. All of which were the same so really the total cost is only pennies difference.
More lumens = more PAR. The Migro youtube channel has a recent informative video regarding this since most people will not spend $200 - $500 on a PAR meter.
I must respectfully disagree goat. We see lumens, plants see (use) PAR. There is a difference. And when it comes to usable photosynthetic radiation, lumens aren't important.

Though this video may be too years old, this iVERY helpful to smaller (and old enough to be your parents!) food-for-family growers. REALLY appreciate the steps you took to more closely follow a scientific experiment process which brings to much more validity to the content! I did read about some quality issues with the clips and switches in a few of the Amazon reviews. Do you have updates or additional info about these concerns after long-term use of the cheapest (and best for folks like us in particular) Barrina lights used on shelves 1& 2?
Love the way you share your result with others, please keep the vid’s coming - With reference to a comment made by mnelson 10000 i.e. “half the running cost and not too far behind in yield”: I don’t use lights to grow micro greens but I do use them to produce seedlings. Like many other growers, I have found that being able to adjust the height of the grow lights pays dividends in producing healthy seedlings, especially with a cheaper lighting set up. I appreciate that your setup is fixed and not easy to alter but you could try an experiment, via raising the height of each tray under your cheap LED set up, with wooden supports of various sizes, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3 lengths, etc. to increase the “PAR”. Just a thought that may (or may not?) improve the quality / yield of your product, at “half the running cost”, with the cheap LED’s.
Yours and many other UA-camrs motivated me to try microgreens and DWC... Bought a bunch of supplies, seeds, lights, etc... Just started my first seeds a few days ago.... As I'm setting up my shelf and got thinking that aluminum foil would reflect light more on the plants... I see you don't have anything around your shelves.. Is it better to keep it open for better air movement???? thanks for all the time both of you put into these videos.... Your grow area always looks so clean....
In my opinion preventing mold with better airflow is more desireable than yielding more due to more lightpenetration. But if u still want to test with reflecting light then u should use a white foil or something like that because white light reflects better than the aluminium foil. i hope you´re having a great yield :) happy growing
Thank you so much for the support! We do like to keep our shelves opened so that there is no interruption with the airflow. When we first started, we had bad air-flow which caused a lot of issues... There is a little reflection on the top of each shelf... There is a reflective foil layer to help bounce some of the light down. Also, that back wall is great at reflecting some light back. That is really it though. I’d choose good airflow over trying to reflect a bit more light... You could leave just the ends open and cover the front and rear. That sounds like it would help to reflect and keep airflow, but I haven’t tried it yet! Thank you so much for your support!

This is like the best video ever. Getting started is expensive and tour videos help people who are less fortunate not waste their little budget. Please buy reputable brand expensive lights and show us if they’re worth it. The yellow and blue strong af high par lights u have r the best and i wouldve boughten either but theyre not available of course. Seeing least expensive vs most expensive is imperative i think. Because Its mind blowing the results you can get by making upgrades.

I’d suggest the Barrina T8’s over the T5’s for indoor growth the the flowering stage... we have grown to the full flowering stage in the past with the T5’s and they did a good job, but they will definitely cause a bit more stretching... I’m pretty sure we used 4 of the 20-watt T5’s for our indoor edible garden system. I’d swap that with three of the 40watt T8’s in the 5000k spectrum and that would likely do the trick! Thanks for comparing the LED lamps. I just bought 2 a couple weeks ago(before your tests lol ) and so far I'm just doing seedlings for the garden but i have three more shelves to buy lights for and your experiments are helping a lot towards maybe buying up as i can afford it. Oh and can onions be grown as micro greens? I'm planning on buying a few bags of onions to plant just for going to seed as i really love onion sprouts but the cost is a bit prohibiting right now. Ive also bought a little black pad and turned it into a blackout cover for my sprouting trays. And im glad to have found y'all channel as my alfalfa sprouts look a bit fatter now that they are in blackout for the few first days. Guess i should have done one tray like normal as a comparison keep up all the hard work and thanks for all the free advice I know it's for micro greens but sone if it really is helping with just sprouts too.

Hey, now that’s a great comparison. I wish it was two weeks ago and I would have gone for the winner, I did find an interesting light however. I ended up going with a lamp that holds two led strips in one tube. I’m using them now to grow out my seedlings for this spring. Once I’m finished with the plant sales I intend to turn to micro greens and give them a try. Thanks for the info👍

one thing i'm concerned about in this test is the light leakage going downward to the other trays, for example if you put the top trays and lights on the bottom, would the result be the same given that those plants would now be getting light leaked from the above levels. just a thought.
In my testing, I found that the Barrina shop lights actually have greater PAR output than the Barrina blurple lights when the reflector is not used. Although the Barrina shop lights have higher PAR output, they are less expensive than the blurples. Interesting side note, the reflectors from the blurple lights also fit on the Barrina shop lights.
Interesting, I didn’t see the slot for the shop lights for reflectors which is why I opted to keep them off the other groups to keep it all the same and not a product of the reflectors. I will try this out! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video! I grow a lot of my own food. Start my own seeds for everything. I'm looking for new lights 🙂 in about the last month I discovered Microgreens, wanting to grow my own, that's how I found your videos. I can find a few at the local rural store but they are puny and at times they have growing medium in them...I think I can do better. The ones you feature in your videos are massive to the ones I find in the store 🤣
The top shelf greens would be the most profitable if you calculate cost to grow per unit of weight, plus the initial investment was super low. Maybe adding one of the bottom row lights in place of one of the top lights would be a near perfect combination of cost and quality.
So from worst to best, 10% difference in product weight. To get there you spent 2x to almost 3x in equipment, and 2x in power. If you changed the order of the lighting and it's shelf placement, how would that compare in product quality and weight? Good job on the testing, always wonder about reflected light affecting the plant growth though.
Great question! We are about to change up the test with light placement and how we test them... As for reflecting, we turned all the lights on, one-by-one and looked at the light passing to the shelf below and it is very minor. There is opaque layers in between each shelf and the rack is placed so close to the wall that only about an inch of light passes onto the wall to the shelf below it... if that makes sense. It is very little light. I was going to show that in the videos, but it added 30 seconds to an already long start of a video.
Great Videos. Would you recommend these Barrina lights for growing seedlings/transplants of Peppers or Tomatoes? Or are the light demands of micro-greens quite different. Thank you.
The top one is the most economial, though, considering the costs you gave us. I'm assuming you include the dehumidifying, ventilation and temperature control in the costs, but you probably don't. Would be nice to know how those costs affect your prefferences..

Hi guys, love your videos. But the bottom 2 shelves look like Barrina T8 lights not T5's (the T8s have two strips of LEDs vs the one strip of LEDs in the T5s). The T5/T8 just stands for the diameter of the tube - T5 = 5/8 of an inch, T8 = 8/8 (1 inch).
Amazon sell 4 60 watt single tube lights for $15 each in 6000k ,and 6500 lumens. They have a version with LEDs mounted on a flat strip, or a V shape which would spread the light out to the sides. Also, the outer light on each side of your shelves should be mounted in a little from the edge.
I can't seem to find the pink Barrina lights on the bottom. You said they're t5's and all I find that is actually full spectrum are t8's from that brand. You have only the Blurple bulbs listed in your Amazon store and those are also t8's. If you could update your store I'd really appreciate it. Thanks so much for the video!

It's like the goose that leads the flight, the ones behind or below benefit from his effort due to the downward reflection of the lights. It would be interesting to see what the lights would do compared to just indirect sunshine.
As soon as you said radish I remembered I forgot to put my blood thinning spices like ginger in my smoothie this morning. But I have to be careful not to thin the blood to much because of the surgeries. So who knows?
I wondered about that too, but there are opaque layers in-between each shelf and I checked by turning one on at a time to see what light passed below and there was very little reflection off the back wall.
I'm no plant scientist, but it looks like that meter is measuring PPFD. PAR is a range of wavelengths that are photosynthetically active from my understanding--it is specific to the plants chlorophyll systems and would not easily be measured. The units expressed are those of PPFD, micromoles per square meter per second. PPFD is measuring the PAR flux density. Please correct if wrong.
Love your videos! I am a newbie for growing. I purchased the Barrina 2FT T8 (24W) version of your 4FT one. My question: I was limited to length for my setup. Is there a huge difference in the 24W vs. the 42W ??? I would like to grow lettuce, microgreens, and start tomatoes and peppers. Your videos are the MOST comprehensive that I have seen. Great videos and thank you so much for your education. I am from Australia and I have been watching your videos, inspired and started broccoli microgreen. I am growing it under my garden window, it's spring here so some days it gets very hot and sunny, while some days very cloudy and cold. Do I need to have 12 hours of sunlight? The LUX measurement is down to a few hundred in the afternoon. Should I move it to under a grow light when the window does not have bright indirect light ? Will the heat cause any problem ( I saw some leaves dries out from morning sun even with the window open for airflow). Thank you again for your inspiring videos.
So you guys do full light for long periods of time, not, for example 18 hrs dark - 6 hrs light per day? Do you find that the full light for days on end is working better than having dark periods?
We run our lights for 17 hours on, 7 hours off. We will likely be playing with light time in the future, but that's worked perfectly for us over the past three years.
The 300watt is a lot stronger. For example, the highest PAR on the 4 shelves in this video is 190. The 300watt LEDs put out around 400PAR. I’m gonna start some tests with the lower three and the 300watt on Monday!

I'm surprised you didn't test against your 300 watt Reclassy Full Spectrum LEDs that you had previously shown to be the winner of your previous light tests.
I will be! I’m starting a test tomorrow where I’ll use the bottom three in this experiment with the 300watt Panel also! I can only do 4 at a time or it gets too complicated, so I wanted to see a few other options!
@@OnTheGrow Groovy! Recommend adding the rank order of the light performance in the comments and their Amazon name. Lot's of confusion on what it what because of the errors in the video. Also, in looking at the Amazon link in your store, there seems to be only one purple light but no pink, so confusion there as well.
This experiment really makes me want to use sunlight than lamps. Because sun is crazy powerful, I test using doggo lux meter for android and the result is insane, my t5 18watt 120cm light setups only give 1300 lux (1 lamp), 2500 lux ( 2 lamps), 4600 (3 lamps). while outdoor sun can range between 4000-10000 , direct sunlight is insane 120,000-140,000 while being so far away, nothing beats sun. I just need to make a small tabletop greenhouse for it.
Comment: you neglected to mention the length of the bulbs (guess: 4ft ?), and you seem to omit the cost of the strips/ballasts from some or all of the lights. Buying grow lights isnt just about the bulbs - they dont work without the correct ballasts. Anyway, It would be helpful if you included all this info in future comparisons, just for completeness. Aside from that, THANK YOU - ive been learning a lot from you guys. Cheers and +1.
The ballast are included in these, they are 4ft and we list all items in the description with direct links so you can see all the details. We try to include as many details in the video without it becoming too much. Hope that helps!
Apologies ... I got confused between different brands on amazon unbundling lights from ballasts. Question ... So, I have a pair of Active Grow T5 23w in my shopping cart, but I was wondering ... In the vid you use 2 per 18d x 48w shelf. Is 2 ideal, or would 3 per shelf be better ? How much lux is optimal vs too much of a good thing ? I'm putting together my 1st grow rack, so this is timely.
@@RovingPunster great question! I'd suggest around 60 watts or 1200 lux per shelf as the minimum. We aim to get 60-100 PAR We like to run 3 x 40 watt LEDs like these : a.co/d/c6aNt4A We find the stronger light adds more coloration and you don't need to run the lights as long.
So, I think the grow lights are actually the T-8 lights from Barrina - their T-8 grow lights are labelled as 42 watts each, their T-5 grow lights are labelled 20 watt each. Which is confusing, since in flourescent lights, T-5's are brighter than T-8's... I guess with LEDs it's just determined by how many diodes they can stuff in the tube, and the T8 tubes are bigger, so more LED's? Apparently.
The Relassy are great, but they don’t fit our shelves well. We use them mainly for starting outdoor crops or getting some beautiful color added to crops! We like the Barrina because they fit the shelves better and provide more even light coverage on the crops. Plus they are much cheaper 🤗🌱🌱

Here in europe i can only find the 24w variation of the pink led full spectrum tubes. they produce 2880 lumen which i think is quite good. Would that be sufficient or better search for a good 6400K tube? What is wise?
Did you find a difference in flavor? We were using 4 of the blurple style barrinas and found our greens were way too potent in flavor and everything started showing true leafs really quick. We just dropped down to 2 a shelf to see if we get a slightly softer flavor from our greens. And your costs, is that per day, per tray? Or Per tray total?
Sorry, just got to the flavor part! I would recommend cleaning your palet with something designed for it to get a better comparison between trays. Just a suggestion. And good for you eating so much radish first thing in the morning!
Hey Guys, is there any other Brand or LED light setup you can recommend? It needs to be 120 cm wide and accessible in Europ, in best case scenario Germany :-) I was thinking about the MARS HYDRO LED Grow Lampe SP 250, but it might be to mutch for growing microgreens.

The problem with cheap leds are their lumen will decrease drasticly over time, way way faster than the expensive ones. At the end you safe money buying the expensive ones, i guess.
We haven’t noticed any substation degradation in the lid output… we’ve used some for over two years, every day, 17 hours a day and they still have similar luck output to day 1… even their PAR has stayed similar.

I have tried 5000K and it worked well! I have not compared them side-by-side with other spectrums yet though. I just got some in so that I can test 3500K vs 5000K vs 6500K

Do the T8 and T5 even matter anymore, now that they are LED? It isn't like they run on a ballast like flourescent bulbs and the T--- followed by a number only means the width of the bulb. I don't know why they continue to use that information other than which new bulbs fit in what fixtures, but there are not many fixtures T8 and larger.
Agreed! That’s why I assumed they were all T5... the T8’s are slightly thicker, but just barely compared to the T5. Like you said too, they don’t need the ballasts anymore so not sure why it’s broken into those classes still.

But it is good to add it to the videos and if I can make a suggestion.... Maybe add the reason you discuss the distance to the light, so people know for their own purposes. Not everyone knows that the distance to the light can greatly effect the growth. Thanks for the reply.

@@mofomoco I would say less than 6 inches, but older bulbs can get really hot so you may want more distance. Higher end bulbs don't need to be as close as the cheaper newer ones. You might want to look at the directions that came with your light.
The PAR meter only measures visible light and not ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR), both of which can be beneficial to plant growth. This shows in the results in that the blurple light had the highest yield but the second lowest PAR measurement. The blurple lights are not really full spectrum but actually multi spectrum and have fallen out of favor, at least with growers of "medicinal" plants, as problems with plants are harder to detect under the pinkish light. An interesting test would be to duplicate this test but with white lamps of equal wattage with color temperatures of 6500K, 5000K, 3500K, and 2700K. The lower the K number, the higher the amount of red in the light spectrum. Great channel and nice comparison tests, keep it up.
yeah, quantum boards are current tech. But, may be overkill for microgreens.
@@ashtanga2000 - The Quantum boards in this case would be overkill. Digikey sells LED printed circuit board arrays from Samsung, Seoul, and Bridgelux. They are available in lengths if 280 mm, 560 mm, & 1120 mm, or roughly 11", 22", & 44" and in widths of around an inch. The Quantum boards use the Samsung 561 or now 301b LEDs as do these Samsung strips. These arrays are also available in several color temperatures and are extremely efficient providing from 140 to 200+ lumen per watt. The inexpensive LED shop lights that I use for starting vegetables provide only 112 lumen per watt. A diy'er could easily make super efficient LED grow lamps suitable for micro greens using these parts. The expensive parts are the constant curremt power supplies and potentially required aluminum heat sinks The electric bill is a factor to be considered for commercial micro green or other growers.
Thanks for the support! We are actually about to start a test where we use a light that can operate in different temperatures and we are going to compare what your suggesting! It will be 6500K, 5000k and 3500K I believe. It only has three modes so we will see how it turns out!

Very nice! It's interesting that even though the bottom three had the highest yield, the profit margin on the top shelf totally blows away the other three... half the running cost and not too far behind in yield. The equipment cost was much lower, too. As far as appearance difference, another day of growth may have mitigated that.
We completely agree! It's pretty amazing what the three 20watt LED's can do in terms of growth for cost. As you upgrade you operation, you can easily add more lights to each shelf if needed.
Although you do create more product at a lower cost, I'd say the quality of the product is also lower, which should generate a lower profit margin.
Quality over quantity for me.
The cost was for electricity only I believe, not the seeds, mat, and time. All of which were the same so really the total cost is only pennies difference.

More lumens = more PAR. The Migro youtube channel has a recent informative video regarding this since most people will not spend $200 - $500 on a PAR meter.
I must respectfully disagree goat. We see lumens, plants see (use) PAR. There is a difference. And when it comes to usable photosynthetic radiation, lumens aren't important.

Maybe this will help you understand my comment. More lumens does not necessarily mean more PAR. Having more lumens in a spectrum unused by the plant does not help with growth.
Though this video may be too years old, this iVERY helpful to smaller (and old enough to be your parents!) food-for-family growers. REALLY appreciate the steps you took to more closely follow a scientific experiment process which brings to much more validity to the content! I did read about some quality issues with the clips and switches in a few of the Amazon reviews. Do you have updates or additional info about these concerns after long-term use of the cheapest (and best for folks like us in particular) Barrina lights used on shelves 1& 2?
Love the way you share your result with others, please keep the vid’s coming - With reference to a comment made by mnelson 10000 i.e. “half the running cost and not too far behind in yield”: I don’t use lights to grow micro greens but I do use them to produce seedlings. Like many other growers, I have found that being able to adjust the height of the grow lights pays dividends in producing healthy seedlings, especially with a cheaper lighting set up. I appreciate that your setup is fixed and not easy to alter but you could try an experiment, via raising the height of each tray under your cheap LED set up, with wooden supports of various sizes, 2x1, 2x2, 2x3 lengths, etc. to increase the “PAR”. Just a thought that may (or may not?) improve the quality / yield of your product, at “half the running cost”, with the cheap LED’s.

Yours and many other UA-camrs motivated me to try microgreens and DWC... Bought a bunch of supplies, seeds, lights, etc... Just started my first seeds a few days ago.... As I'm setting up my shelf and got thinking that aluminum foil would reflect light more on the plants... I see you don't have anything around your shelves.. Is it better to keep it open for better air movement???? thanks for all the time both of you put into these videos.... Your grow area always looks so clean....
In my opinion preventing mold with better airflow is more desireable than yielding more due to more lightpenetration. But if u still want to test with reflecting light then u should use a white foil or something like that because white light reflects better than the aluminium foil. i hope you´re having a great yield :) happy growing
Thank you so much for the support! We do like to keep our shelves opened so that there is no interruption with the airflow. When we first started, we had bad air-flow which caused a lot of issues...
There is a little reflection on the top of each shelf... There is a reflective foil layer to help bounce some of the light down. Also, that back wall is great at reflecting some light back. That is really it though.
I’d choose good airflow over trying to reflect a bit more light... You could leave just the ends open and cover the front and rear. That sounds like it would help to reflect and keep airflow, but I haven’t tried it yet!

Please buy reputable brand expensive lights and show us if they’re worth it. The yellow and blue strong af high par lights u have r the best and i wouldve boughten either but theyre not available of course. Seeing least expensive vs most expensive is imperative i think. I’d suggest the Barrina T8’s over the T5’s for indoor growth the the flowering stage... we have grown to the full flowering stage in the past with the T5’s and they did a good job, but they will definitely cause a bit more stretching... I’m pretty sure we used 4 of the 20-watt T5’s for our indoor edible garden system.
I’d swap that with three of the 40watt T8’s in the 5000k spectrum and that would likely do the trick!

Thanks for comparing the LED lamps. I just bought 2 a couple weeks ago(before your tests lol ) and so far I'm just doing seedlings for the garden but i have three more shelves to buy lights for and your experiments are helping a lot towards maybe buying up as i can afford it.
Oh and can onions be grown as micro greens? I'm planning on buying a few bags of onions to plant just for going to seed as i really love onion sprouts but the cost is a bit prohibiting right now.
Ive also bought a little black pad and turned it into a blackout cover for my sprouting trays. And im glad to have found y'all channel as my alfalfa sprouts look a bit fatter now that they are in blackout for the few first days. Guess i should have done one tray like normal as a comparison keep up all the hard work and thanks for all the free advice I know it's for micro greens but sone if it really is helping with just sprouts too.

Hey, now that’s a great comparison. I wish it was two weeks ago and I would have gone for the winner, I did find an interesting light however. I ended up going with a lamp that holds two led strips in one tube. I’m using them now to grow out my seedlings for this spring. Once I’m finished with the plant sales I intend to turn to micro greens and give them a try. Thanks for the info👍

one thing i'm concerned about in this test is the light leakage going downward to the other trays, for example if you put the top trays and lights on the bottom, would the result be the same given that those plants would now be getting light leaked from the above levels. just a thought.
In my testing, I found that the Barrina shop lights actually have greater PAR output than the Barrina blurple lights when the reflector is not used. Although the Barrina shop lights have higher PAR output, they are less expensive than the blurples. Interesting side note, the reflectors from the blurple lights also fit on the Barrina shop lights.
Interesting, I didn’t see the slot for the shop lights for reflectors which is why I opted to keep them off the other groups to keep it all the same and not a product of the reflectors. I will try this out! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for this video! I grow a lot of my own food. Start my own seeds for everything. I'm looking for new lights 🙂 in about the last month I discovered Microgreens, wanting to grow my own, that's how I found your videos. I can find a few at the local rural store but they are puny and at times they have growing medium in them...I think I can do better. The ones you feature in your videos are massive to the ones I find in the store 🤣
The top shelf greens would be the most profitable if you calculate cost to grow per unit of weight, plus the initial investment was super low. Maybe adding one of the bottom row lights in place of one of the top lights would be a near perfect combination of cost and quality.

So from worst to best, 10% difference in product weight. To get there you spent 2x to almost 3x in equipment, and 2x in power.

Good job on the testing, always wonder about reflected light affecting the plant growth though.
Reflected light is as good as direct light although not as intense. Photons are all that matters

Great question! We are about to change up the test with light placement and how we test them... As for reflecting, we turned all the lights on, one-by-one and looked at the light passing to the shelf below and it is very minor. There is opaque layers in between each shelf and the rack is placed so close to the wall that only about an inch of light passes onto the wall to the shelf below it... if that makes sense. It is very little light.
I was going to show that in the videos, but it added 30 seconds to an already long start of a video.

The top one is the most economial, though, considering the costs you gave us. I'm assuming you include the dehumidifying, ventilation and temperature control in the costs, but you probably don't. Would be nice to know how those costs affect your prefferences..

Hi guys, love your videos. But the bottom 2 shelves look like Barrina T8 lights not T5's (the T8s have two strips of LEDs vs the one strip of LEDs in the T5s). The T5/T8 just stands for the diameter of the tube - T5 = 5/8 of an inch, T8 = 8/8 (1 inch).
9:30 So for twice the energy consumption you don't get twice the yield. So actually the simplest set up is most efficient.

Amazon sell 4 60 watt single tube lights for $15 each in 6000k ,and 6500 lumens. They have a version with LEDs mounted on a flat strip, or a V shape which would spread the light out to the sides. Also, the outer light on each side of your shelves should be mounted in a little from the edge.
I can't seem to find the pink Barrina lights on the bottom. You said they're t5's and all I find that is actually full spectrum are t8's from that brand. You have only the Blurple bulbs listed in your Amazon store and those are also t8's.

As soon as you said radish I remembered I forgot to put my blood thinning spices like ginger in my smoothie this morning. But I have to be careful not to thin the blood to much because of the surgeries. So who knows?
I wondered about that too, but there are opaque layers in-between each shelf and I checked by turning one on at a time to see what light passed below and there was very little reflection off the back wall.
I'm no plant scientist, but it looks like that meter is measuring PPFD. PAR is a range of wavelengths that are photosynthetically active from my understanding--it is specific to the plants chlorophyll systems and would not easily be measured. The units expressed are those of PPFD, micromoles per square meter per second. PPFD is measuring the PAR flux density. Please correct if wrong.

Great videos and thank you so much for your education. I am from Australia and I have been watching your videos, inspired and started broccoli microgreen. I am growing it under my garden window, it's spring here so some days it gets very hot and sunny, while some days very cloudy and cold. Do I need to have 12 hours of sunlight? The LUX measurement is down to a few hundred in the afternoon. Should I move it to under a grow light when the window does not have bright indirect light ? Will the heat cause any problem ( I saw some leaves dries out from morning sun even with the window open for airflow). Thank you again for your inspiring videos.

So you guys do full light for long periods of time, not, for example 18 hrs dark - 6 hrs light per day? Do you find that the full light for days on end is working better than having dark periods?
We run our lights for 17 hours on, 7 hours off. We will likely be playing with light time in the future, but that's worked perfectly for us over the past three years.
How would you compare the bottom 3 racks to the relassy 300watt light setup?
The 300watt is a lot stronger. For example, the highest PAR on the 4 shelves in this video is 190. The 300watt LEDs put out around 400PAR. I’m gonna start some tests with the lower three and the 300watt on Monday!

@@OnTheGrow Groovy! Recommend adding the rank order of the light performance in the comments and their Amazon name. Lot's of confusion on what it what because of the errors in the video. Also, in looking at the Amazon link in your store, there seems to be only one purple light but no pink, so confusion there as well.
This experiment really makes me want to use sunlight than lamps. Because sun is crazy powerful, I test using doggo lux meter for android and the result is insane, my t5 18watt 120cm light setups only give 1300 lux (1 lamp), 2500 lux ( 2 lamps), 4600 (3 lamps). while outdoor sun can range between 4000-10000 , direct sunlight is insane 120,000-140,000 while being so far away, nothing beats sun. I just need to make a small tabletop greenhouse for it.
Comment: you neglected to mention the length of the bulbs (guess: 4ft ?), and you seem to omit the cost of the strips/ballasts from some or all of the lights. Buying grow lights isnt just about the bulbs - they dont work without the correct ballasts. Anyway, It would be helpful if you included all this info in future comparisons, just for completeness.

We find the stronger light adds more coloration and you don't need to run the lights as long.

So, I think the grow lights are actually the T-8 lights from Barrina - their T-8 grow lights are labelled as 42 watts each, their T-5 grow lights are labelled 20 watt each. Which is confusing, since in flourescent lights, T-5's are brighter than T-8's... I guess with LEDs it's just determined by how many diodes they can stuff in the tube, and the T8 tubes are bigger, so more LED's? Apparently.

The Relassy are great, but they don’t fit our shelves well. We use them mainly for starting outdoor crops or getting some beautiful color added to crops! We like the Barrina because they fit the shelves better and provide more even light coverage on the crops. Plus they are much cheaper 🤗🌱🌱

Here in europe i can only find the 24w variation of the pink led full spectrum tubes. they produce 2880 lumen which i think is quite good. Would that be sufficient or better search for a good 6400K tube? What is wise?

We keep our lights at 8" from the crop but most people stay between 8-12".

Did you find a difference in flavor? We were using 4 of the blurple style barrinas and found our greens were way too potent in flavor and everything started showing true leafs really quick. We just dropped down to 2 a shelf to see if we get a slightly softer flavor from our greens. And your costs, is that per day, per tray? Or Per tray total?
Sorry, just got to the flavor part! I would recommend cleaning your palet with something designed for it to get a better comparison between trays. Just a suggestion. And good for you eating so much radish first thing in the morning!

We have a test coming soon where we put the fluorescent against 3 different LEDs!
The problem with cheap leds are their lumen will decrease drasticly over time, way way faster than the expensive ones. At the end you safe money buying the expensive ones, i guess.
We haven’t noticed any substation degradation in the lid output… we’ve used some for over two years, every day, 17 hours a day and they still have similar luck output to day 1… even their PAR has stayed similar.
About to buy some T8 54watt 6000k 5400lm linkable lights on amazon. Good or not?

I have tried 5000K and it worked well! I have not compared them side-by-side with other spectrums yet though. I just got some in so that I can test 3500K vs 5000K vs 6500K

Blurple ain't full spectrum or is the sun blurple.
...the manufacturer referred to it as full spectrum meaning that it encompasses many different light spectrums that cater towards plant growth.
