I am here because I am trying to learn about growing microgreens so please don't roast me for the questions. I know farmers that sprout and grow some of these same seeds to feed their animals some nutrient dense feed called fodder to help replace their natural browsing of fresh greens during winter months. They grow their fodder in these same 10x20 trays using some of the common microgreen seeds I have seen in videos like wheat and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and occasionally some other seeds I haven't seen in microgreen videos like barley and oats My point is that when they grow their fodder they don't bother with using any sort of lighting or growing material like coco or potting soil, they just dump soaked seeds into a sterile tray and they keep them watered in trays with drainage holes. The seeds sprout and just grow a big ol' mat of roots that all tangle together into one solid sheet and the farmers just fling the entire edible mass of greens, roots, and all at their animals for disposal. My question is: If they can do it without lights and growing material, why can't we? What's the real pros/cons for the different setups?
Any growshop can order these trays in for you. Do not order them online as they can and more than likely will come in cracked. Sun blaster is also a T5 bulb and ballast style, common item at a grow shop. Sun
Just seeing that room has made me feel way less hesitant to get into it. I have a bachelor apartment with a large window that I usually cover up. I'm looking to change my lifestyle, and abandon some assumptions about my space I have held onto. Currently thinking I can give up to a 6' x 10' space over to growing foodin my apartment by the window. I could fit 4/5 of those racks in that space(on rollers or sliding track for ease of access), I would just have to look into optimal lighting options around here
I'm so much happier growing sprouts. I'm trying to get a little bit into microgreens but Sprouts have spoiled me. I'm growing 42 trays hydroponic sprouts a week and I could double that each week if I wanted to it takes me about 6 hours to harvest 42 trays of sprouts and have the growing containers and trays cleaned up and sanitized by the time I'm done. This is enough to fill up three refrigerators with 14 to 16 quart plastic containers with lids. I get a minimum of $20 per tray as well. Harvesting from me is simply rolling a thick tray of greened sprouts into a container of water, dehull using a hose with spray gun and salad spin using a 5 gallon hand power spinner. 2 trays fills up one 14 qt dollar store Bella box and averages to about 5 lbs. I'm charging 10 a lb wholesale. My shelf life averages 2 to 3 weeks. I'd rather just grow pea shoots and juice them at the farmers market and make $3 a cup of juice combining what greens I grow including Sprouts and mixing it with premade apple, lemon, and Ginger juice to sweeten it. It's funny watching this video because I never see anyone talk about Sprouts the same way. Maybe I'll be the first one on UA-cam doing it

Thanks for the video, Curtis. I'm trying to figure out which lights to use. In his book Mini Farming, Self-Suffieciency on 1/4 Acre, Brett Markham says he uses one cool and one warm bulb on a double fluorescent ballast to inexpensively emit the blue and red ranges of the spectrum and gets good results at what was then (2010) 1/6 of the price of specialized agricultural lights. This sounds interesting in the spirit of the 80-20 rule, but I need to research three things: 1) Current price of bulbs, light fixtures, and electricity to operate LEDs vs. fluorescents. (Apparently LEDs have dropped in relative price since 2010.) 2) Lifespan of LEDs vs. fluorescents. This would yield a truer cost per year of operation. 3: Whether Markham has changed his lighting system in the 14 years since his book was published.

Why doesn’t he grow mushrooms in the same room just a thought us cannabis growers do it to increase growth of plants also the mushrooms grow nicely if u plan on cultivating them because they require oxygen and the plants are putting out plenty, now you’ll have to increase the humidity to 70% in the mushroom grow but I’m sure you’ll figure that out :)

In 2022, using 3 4ft 20w bulbs per rack, five shelves per rack, I would still estimate that setup at about 2000, but it would be even more efficient and profitable. That's assuming a cost of about 500 to 600 per rack to do it right. Each shelf having a 120mm fan like it should and so on.
Hi. Great tuition. Thank you! At 11 minutes and 44 seconds more light and "heat" is mentioned. But, as I understand it "heat equals mold" Could you kindly comment. I'm in South Africa.
Each light is 14 watts, so 10×14=140 watts per hour light +dehumidifier is 60watt+fan 30 watts =max250 watts per hour If 1000 watts is a 24 cents 250 wats is 0.25 kwats ×20 cents =50 cent /per hour Monthly payment for electric would be 0.5×24×30 =$360 So
The amount of energy required to grow these few microgreens is straight up ridiculous. Lights, ventilation and especially air conditioning! One should calculate the CO2 footprint to grow these few trays.
Does he need a humidifier because there is standing water in the trays? Do the trays drain completely? It doesn't look like any tubes are bringing water or draining. Ebb and flow would save water and be automated to save time... I'm trying to figure out.... bootstrap has one but it's too much money... build it for half
Can I ask a dumb question? Has anyone grown Micro Greens with less light? I understand they will grow with no soil as they have everything they need to grow..I am thinking the lights are only to “make the plants green” as the Chlorophyll is already there and nutrients are already there in the plant...So I am suggesting possibly to run the lights on the last day or less before you take them out for sale..I am suggesting this all to reduce the light bill as this video is about “the cheap way”.. I am have been growing wheatgrass for the last two years on a shelf in our bathroom..I really grow it for a pee patch for our dogs as this one grows in our bathroom..But, my point is I don’t use a light..I cover it with a dark garbage bag (to keep out light and hold in moisture) until the plants are about two inches tall..They are just white colored as I pull off the black garbage bags..After I remove the bag, the next day, the plants are all green…There is just one small window in the bathroom that does not shine on the plants…They are getting green from ambient reflected lights in the bathroom with white walls..No light needed for the plants alone…

@@tangobayus yeah feel as though it's such a niche market. if anyone else has experience marketing otherwise please share.
@@namaste597 also you are producing a finished crop, albeit one that grows rapidly. last year a lot of people started gardening because of the lockdowns. the result was that garden supply centers were picked clean. if those people continue then there will be a good market for seedlings.
@@tangobayus I haven't grown anything this last season. Want to pick it up this spring. I've grown hydroponics and aquaponics for years tho.
Obviously UA-cam makes more than working.
Happy New Year
Amazing!
im just starting my microgreen project, i want to ask/ make it clear? they are not using a grow light? just ordinary lighting? thank you
You’re making me dizzy man! But thanks for the info
Great vid...lots of awesome info you shared ..thank you.....i now am growing wheatgrass for chickens and juicing for my self.......next i am trying the mixed sprouts😁 say where do you get your heavy duralbe flats and your bulk seed? Thanks so much for your chnl!
Do you have to worry about plastic chemicals like BPA from the tray leaching into the crops?
No.
I would think because the room or the trays don't get hot, there's a very low chance of leaching into the crops.
We need to BOYCOTT HomeDepot. Thanks!
Who or what company buys these microgreens? Very interesting.
You can sell them to local restaurants, smaller grocery stores or sell them at the weekend farmers markets
Is there any reason they you don't mix the water from the air dehumidifier with the water use for the plants rather than just drain it away?
Why did you stop growing microgreens?
LED shred your eyes unfortunately should wear weldor glasses if you are exposed daily...
20dollar for one plate? NEVER! 4$ MAX.
Do you think the LEDs would have the same coverage as the t5 or t12? Or do you think they would create funny light patterns across the flats do to the lights being so close to the flat and each individual led being one specific light spectrum?
Canadian youtuber, but ALWAYS amazon links you put are .com ..........
99% of my audience is in the US.
Very good. Please inform more about lighting system duration and wats capacity to a specific area
An alternative to Botanicare Trays is Duralastics. Duralastics identifies their trays by inside dimensions, 24 x 48 id and 36 x 72 id.
You will need to reduce the outer dimensions of your paperpot germination trays by 1/8 inch both directions or see if Duralastics can produce a 26 x 49 id tray to accomodate the paperpot trays.
poke you botanicare got bought out by Monsanto. Stop it y’all
Hi: I can't find the sunblaster link that you mentioned.
I learned nothing on this. I need a non-dirt style microgreen set up for personal use. Like one tray. This was not it.
Hello, with such setup and the fact that plants have different water needs, is it best to put just one variety per tray (botanicare) so they all get the same amount of water? and in addition, can we have 4 trays in each tub at different stages? (again, my concern is with the amount of water added per tray)
Hi, we met late afternoon today at the Heirloom Expo. What a great event. I feel like a kid with so many people to talk gardening with. It is amazing. Looking forward to the next 2 days. I and I will make sure I catch up with your channel. Thanks for listening to me today.
Curtis the UA-cam Grabbler. Nice small hat.
Nice Christmas tree in the background ;)
man, you guys NEvER talk about selling them. to whom? keeping cold produce. how much. we really need a better breakdown on the business sales end. Loe the info you AND Donny Greens put out, thank you.
Its a sham. He makes money off the UA-cam videos. Do you not see?
Why doesn’t he grow mushrooms in the same room just a thought us cannabis growers do it to increase growth of plants also the mushrooms grow nicely if u plan on cultivating them because they require oxygen and the plants are putting out plenty, now you’ll have to increase the humidity to 70% in the mushroom grow but I’m sure you’ll figure that out :)
If they don't need light get a grow tent for a germ chamber and keep em in there
At 70% humidity the microgreens will get too wet and turn to wilted sludge very quickly. 40-55% humidity is optimal for microgreens.
K Fox you’re so wrong bro. You need to consider airflow also. And soil medium and species of plants.
@@TITAN0402 This is a microgreens business. I run a microgreens business and had issues with high humidity and know the outcome. I stand by what I said.
@@kfox5301 can you lend any advice? I'm starting a company
I really like this simple setup for microgreens.
I’m curious. Where does this fellow sell these micro greens?
Hey man thank you for the information by the way let me ask you how you deal with the plage and the peOple ansking you if the product is 100% clean of everything ? You need special room ?
You can also get an led light with does not require ballast. You just cut the ballast out and use the led build that specifies no ballast.
The correct Amazon part number for those trays is B0784Z915J. The link provided is not the same as the ones in the video.
that cannabis in the bacground looks good
If energy isn't an issue, what's the ideal temperature for growing micros?
18-22 Celsius
Why dont you use the water from the dehumidifier?
In 2022, using 3 4ft 20w bulbs per rack, five shelves per rack, I would still estimate that setup at about 2000, but it would be even more efficient and profitable. That's assuming a cost of about 500 to 600 per rack to do it right. Each shelf having a 120mm fan like it should and so on.
Hi.
Great tuition. Thank you!
At 11 minutes and 44 seconds more light and "heat" is mentioned. But, as I understand it "heat equals mold"
Could you kindly comment.
I'm in South Africa.
Just curious how much these setups impact your electric bill.
Each light is 14 watts, so 10×14=140 watts per hour light +dehumidifier is 60watt+fan 30 watts =max250 watts per hour
If 1000 watts is a 24 cents 250 wats is 0.25 kwats ×20 cents =50 cent /per hour
Monthly payment for electric would be
0.5×24×30 =$360
So
The amount of energy required to grow these few microgreens is straight up ridiculous.
Lights, ventilation and especially air conditioning!
One should calculate the CO2 footprint to grow these few trays.
What media is he using to grow?
Great,,, perfect beginners video.. tks
Where do you get your bottom trays?
Nice! Big ganja tree behind you
Hi teacher !! Hope you are well ……. I wanted to grow with in ontario regiion inside my basement ….Can I start a farm in ontario like that….what about the consideration that I need to put …will they accept the basement growers…?? Do tou have any idea about this??
Youre a grower that doesnt know what Botanicare is? Thats like not knowing who Advanced Nutrients or General Hydroponics is.
that kind of profit IF and only IF someone can sell the product.
and seriously to me those selling prices are just ridiculous
Any body else notice the buds behind him at 36 seconds in
How many led lights and watts per rack ?
Do the grow light stay on 24/7?
Where did you get those watering trays
He can rebulb these fixtures with LED bulbs.
If you only have an uninsulated garage to run your grow operation in, is running a dehumidifier feasible? I'm in Florida, and the environment in the summer can definitely reach super-hot and super-humid.
