I am here because I am trying to learn about growing microgreens so please don't roast me for the questions. I know farmers that sprout and grow some of these same seeds to feed their animals some nutrient dense feed called fodder to help replace their natural browsing of fresh greens during winter months. They grow their fodder in these same 10x20 trays using some of the common microgreen seeds I have seen in videos like wheat and Black Oil Sunflower Seeds and occasionally some other seeds I haven't seen in microgreen videos like barley and oats My point is that when they grow their fodder they don't bother with using any sort of lighting or growing material like coco or potting soil, they just dump soaked seeds into a sterile tray and they keep them watered in trays with drainage holes. The seeds sprout and just grow a big ol' mat of roots that all tangle together into one solid sheet and the farmers just fling the entire edible mass of greens, roots, and all at their animals for disposal. My question is: If they can do it without lights and growing material, why can't we? What's the real pros/cons for the different setups?
Where I live, covers are required for lights to pass inspection so if a light breaks it doesn't contaminate your crop. Also, I think I would repurpose the water from the dehumidifier for nutrients. Nice system overview; thanks!
I'm so much happier growing sprouts. I'm trying to get a little bit into microgreens but Sprouts have spoiled me. I'm growing 42 trays hydroponic sprouts a week and I could double that each week if I wanted to it takes me about 6 hours to harvest 42 trays of sprouts and have the growing containers and trays cleaned up and sanitized by the time I'm done. This is enough to fill up three refrigerators with 14 to 16 quart plastic containers with lids. I get a minimum of $20 per tray as well. Harvesting from me is simply rolling a thick tray of greened sprouts into a container of water, dehull using a hose with spray gun and salad spin using a 5 gallon hand power spinner. 2 trays fills up one 14 qt dollar store Bella box and averages to about 5 lbs. I'm charging 10 a lb wholesale. My shelf life averages 2 to 3 weeks. I'd rather just grow pea shoots and juice them at the farmers market and make $3 a cup of juice combining what greens I grow including Sprouts and mixing it with premade apple, lemon, and Ginger juice to sweeten it. It's funny watching this video because I never see anyone talk about Sprouts the same way. Maybe I'll be the first one on UA-cam doing it
Thanks for the video, Curtis. I'm trying to figure out which lights to use. In his book Mini Farming, Self-Suffieciency on 1/4 Acre, Brett Markham says he uses one cool and one warm bulb on a double fluorescent ballast to inexpensively emit the blue and red ranges of the spectrum and gets good results at what was then (2010) 1/6 of the price of specialized agricultural lights. This sounds interesting in the spirit of the 80-20 rule, but I need to research three things: 1) Current price of bulbs, light fixtures, and electricity to operate LEDs vs. fluorescents. (Apparently LEDs have dropped in relative price since 2010.) 2) Lifespan of LEDs vs. fluorescents. This would yield a truer cost per year of operation. 3: Whether Markham has changed his lighting system in the 14 years since his book was published.
There's more to lighting than just cost savings on its electrical usage. Especially in AZ,.... the less heat, the more saved on cooling the room. less hazard for fire, etc etc,

I am starting some microgreens and lettuce for home food. I enjoyed seeing these racks and large trays. One of those metal racks with 5 shelves might be good for all of my winter greens + spring seed starting. Excellent video!
Just seeing that room has made me feel way less hesitant to get into it. I have a bachelor apartment with a large window that I usually cover up. I'm looking to change my lifestyle, and abandon some assumptions about my space I have held onto. Currently thinking I can give up to a 6' x 10' space over to growing foodin my apartment by the window. I could fit 4/5 of those racks in that space(on rollers or sliding track for ease of access), I would just have to look into optimal lighting options around here

I'm trying to get set-up to sell microgreens by the time the restaurants open back up... I heard a few local, smaller growers have permanently stopped producing microgreens and moved on to self-sustaining personal crops. #covid19
So I've been wanting to do something like this for quite some time I have experience in outdoor conventional gardening and hydroponics but I've never done microgreens. How would someonebgo about marketing microgreens ? Are they highly wanted ?
I sampled microgreens to a top 100 restaurant in San Francisco and got no interest. Talk to chefs to see if they are using them. I told one guy I was growing in my garage and that ended it. I'm working on producing seedlings of various greens, basil, and tomatoes.
@@namaste597 also you are producing a finished crop, albeit one that grows rapidly. last year a lot of people started gardening because of the lockdowns. the result was that garden supply centers were picked clean. if those people continue then there will be a good market for seedlings.
Fluorescent is a great off-the-shelf option for lighting, but if you're looking to maximize efficiency I recommend checking out some DIY LED strip builds. It requires some electrical knowledge but you can use solderless fittings like Wagos for flexibility/easy changing of the lighting setup. LedGardener on UA-cam (has his own website too) does step by step guides to making your own LED grow lights. I built a true 490W (not a "490W equivalent" like some pre-built LED grow lights) LED strip array putting out 50,000+ lumens for about $375. You can also mix and match spectrums for max yield.
I have a 32 watt led strip light that puts out 3,000 lumens for $10. For $40 I get more lumens than your set up for about 10% of the price. They are also enclosed it shop light form that is dampness proof and has the plug and hangers included
@@doeydoey I actually miscalculated and mixed up PAR readings and lumens. It's much higher than 10k lumens. I built my LED strip array to slightly higher specs than the HLG 550 V2: horticulturelightinggroup.com/products/hlg-550
@@ben-7403 wow!!!! That is a great setup for that price!! I'm a lighting geek and HLG is my favorite company. You could grow any type of plants under that setup. Overkill for growing microgreens but with your setup I could grow a tropical garden that fills up my whole room.
Why spend that much when microgreens need the bare minimum? Unless you can cut a 7 day grow to a 4 day grow with your setup it doesn't seem worth it unless you're growing something other than microgreens. Regular shop light leds are cheaper efficient for about $59 for an 8 pk.
In 2022, using 3 4ft 20w bulbs per rack, five shelves per rack, I would still estimate that setup at about 2000, but it would be even more efficient and profitable. That's assuming a cost of about 500 to 600 per rack to do it right. Each shelf having a 120mm fan like it should and so on.
Hi. Great tuition. Thank you! At 11 minutes and 44 seconds more light and "heat" is mentioned. But, as I understand it "heat equals mold" Could you kindly comment. I'm in South Africa.
really makes me wonder where you guys get all the seeds. Seeds and power are the most expensive commodities in the business. $1000/week is WITHOUT costs, clearly.

Is there any reason they you don't mix the water from the air dehumidifier with the water use for the plants rather than just drain it away?
Will microgreens grow outside in a humid climate (>70% humidity)? Thanks in advance
Let that dehumidifier drain into a bucket, you save money to reuse it, and it is the right p.h.!
As long as your air inside is clean.
Condenser coils on dehumidifiers can contain cheaper metals that you wouldn’t want to leech into your water and then applied on your soil.

Not in the US. Possibly here in Kelowna.
Thanks for the video... how many hours a day does he have the lights on? thanks again
@@tangobayus yeah feel as though it's such a niche market. if anyone else has experience marketing otherwise please share.
@@namaste597 also you are producing a finished crop, albeit one that grows rapidly. last year a lot of people started gardening because of the lockdowns. the result was that garden supply centers were picked clean. if those people continue then there will be a good market for seedlings.
@@tangobayus I haven't grown anything this last season. Want to pick it up this spring. I've grown hydroponics and aquaponics for years tho.
Why wouldn’t you capture the moisture and supplement watering with that? The water should be cleaner than what comes from the tap, no?
In 2022, using 3 4ft 20w bulbs per rack, five shelves per rack, I would still estimate that setup at about 2000, but it would be even more efficient and profitable. That's assuming a cost of about 500 to 600 per rack to do it right. Each shelf having a 120mm fan like it should and so on.
Where do you get your bottom trays?
Great video!
you said the lights was cheap what would be a better light?
Why did you stop growing microgreens?
How would one manage humidity and temperature growing in an "outdoor" - an outside shade net structure?
You can lift the net at intervals, try to create vee shaped pattern of airflow from side to side.
The humidity problem comes up from being in an enclosed space with nowhere for the moisture to go. You should be ok.
If bottom watering micro greens, do I need to change the tray with no holes that I water into or just leave it for the next tray to be placed on it?
Good afternoon friend, where can I find this structure for microgreens?
Hi.
Great tuition. Thank you!
At 11 minutes and 44 seconds more light and "heat" is mentioned. But, as I understand it "heat equals mold"
Could you kindly comment.
I'm in South Africa.
Great video Curtis
how much weight 1 flat without tray
what are these growing racks called
really makes me wonder where you guys get all the seeds. Seeds and power are the most expensive commodities in the business. $1000/week is WITHOUT costs, clearly.
ObsessionPC electricity is actually very cheap
Why is he dumping the water from the dehumidifier down the sink? Could be watering his plants with it.
Pat Konelectric depending on yer location a lot of pans breed algae
they tend to accumulate dust and other things that often mold. at least my dehumidifyer did.
not advisible to use the water.
What about costs of packaging and marketing? Are these greens placed in individual packages to be taken to market?
Can this only be done locally?
How does he sell them? Markets, restaurants...?
why aren’t the bottom watering flats back in stock?
why let the dehumifier go into the drain wouldn't it be better to reuse the water?
Sure. Whatever works for you.
How many led lights and watts per rack ?
