- This video is all about tongue posture! I've received many messages from patients who are trying to attain proper tongue posture on their own and in this video, I explain why it's not a good idea to do this without the help of a practitioner who is trained and experienced in providing myofunctional therapy! Myofunctional Therapy is a type of physical therapy for the muscles that surround and support the tongue.

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos!
Why is mainstream dentistry not looking at issues like tomgue posture in adults .Instead, they say all growth is over , only benefit adults can have is cosmetic
Yes, I wish mainstream dentistry did look at all these things.
@Ayo well dentistry is a job, so that's a strange thing to complain about. More importantly though, there's no credible evidence of any medical benefits of orthotropics, so no ethically sound, non-quack dentist will recommend it.
@@joshbarghest7058 rubbish answer, adding to the bad rep dentists have
@ayo9057yes, but its what they weongly THINK makes money. innovation makes more. help everyone and you "lose" customers briefly. -are jobs for a purpose, or is that just pretend? capitalism doesnt work bc we act like we can trick ourselves into doing the right thing by focusing on money
in reality, focusing on money isnt even the best way to make more money. greed makes you poor and miserable, like most dentists
@@joshbarghest7058Josh the reason you may not be able to find “credible evidence” I.e. research, is because orthotropics mostly threatens the revenue streams of orthodontists and the mainstream medical field. Free solutions and prevention are rarely popular. Fixes and treatments that cost patients money are more often touted best, and researched, and thus more readily “credible.”

I’ve recently developed Tongue thrusting due to bad bad posture. Thanks!
Sorry to hear that and I hope you found this info helpful :)
I feel a bit lost with the tongue posture thing. Few years ago, my tongue was always on the lower palate. Now, with (a lot) of practice, my tongue is always resting automatically in the upper palate (so it's supposed to be good). Yet, I am not sure it is such a good thing because I have strange sides effects that my be linked to this. Maybe because my tongue is pushing pretty hard all the time on the upper palate, wich is not so good...
I’d recommend meeting with a practitioner who provides myofunctional therapy. Best of luck to you!
I tried mewing but it always feels like I am biting my cheeks....
Sorry to hear that! I’m definitely not an expert on Mewing so if you have questions you may want to ask Dr John or Mike Mew.
I've been having TMJ symptoms for a while now (right eye with occasional muscle twitches, tinnitus and jaw cracking sounds when chewing/opening mouth) and have been training for the last 2 days to keep my tongue in the right position as described in your video (used to have a low tongue posture). It has been surprisingly easy for me to do it for the entire day. Have you had patients with similar problems and if so, would you know how long it can take before I see improvements specially when it comes to the muscle twitches? Also, as per your suggestion I'm looking for a myofunctional therapist where I live. Thank you for the great content!
Thank you for your kind words. I actually don't use correcting the tongue posture/myofunctional therapy as a treatment modality - I've seen it make TMJD worse. I recommend treating the TMJD FIRST and then proceeding with Myofunctional Therapy when you're symptom free.
You are so informative and such a pleasure to watch. Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful.
You are so welcome!
I wish I had seen this video earlier because years ago I tried fixing my tongue posture, and now I realise that my supertight tongue muscles were the reason for my extremely tight fact/neck and even upper traps lol
Well I hope the info can still help!!
exact same problem going on with me. have you figured out anything thats helped you? its been eating away at me for a bit
@@armrahi Yes, I think my tight/strained digastric muscles were the reason for it so I looked up release techniques on YT. I also discovered I've been breathing wrong by using my chest instead of my abdomen (diaphragmatic breathing) which was a big contributor to my tight neck/upper back muscles and stress in general. Diaphragmatic breathing is also way better for oxygen so properly breathing like this while stretching helped a lot.
@@kwertie thanks for the info, a lot of this applies to me, so ill start working on that. appreciate it :)

My dentist says they don't do TMJ, they only do a splint or a thing to put in your mouth while you sleep. What doctor should I be seeing for this?
Are you looking for someone to help you with tongue posture or with TMD?
@@theTMJdoc Sorry I saw you replied to my other comment about it already! ty
i only learned this today after 30 years when my dentist told me when I am in the process of fixing my underbite so I am searching this now in internet. Thats why i had underbite because my tongue was always resting at the bottom and pushing towards my lower teeth. Wish this was taught in school or maybe I was just not listening in school before if this was taught haha. 😂

I think that in this video I ask you not to try this on your own. Have you seen a practitioner who provides myofunctional therapy??
@@theTMJdoc No i haven't consulted any myofuctional therapist , i actually started mewing because I had noticed that my teeth were not aligned due to my over bite over my lower teeth and my tongue resting behind my teeth, due to which my teeth became a little forward slant , so i searched for proper teeth and tongue resting position on the internet and came accross mewing but i thought it was some of false information, but every where on the internet every body told that it true and infact work for a better jaw line , so i started mewing for a better positioning of tounge, but it is hard to practics it all the time as it cause some weird tension behind the tounge and slight throat pain ,so i came accross your video hoping that there would be any information regarding how much should I mew per day .Thank you so much i didn't expect you to be so fast to respond , that was so sweet of you 😍
I am 30 years old male and my tongue rested on my lower jaw all my life...
I have severe underbite and asymmetrical jaws... Nobody ever told me about the right posture of the tongue. I tried many times to press my tongue against the palate but it's very hard to me to keep it long time. And i felt many times pressure on my lower teeth because of my tounge, please doctor give me an advise how to correct my tongue posture by myself, thank you
I cannot advise you on that. I'd recommend meeting with a practitioner who provides myofunctional therapy.
So pretty much how ur toungue ends up after swallowing is the right posture? u make me worried when u say dont try to get right tongue posture on your own, but how you describe how my tongue should be is how my tongue has been my entire life i believe, so then im good right?
if you're swallowing correctly, yes.
Thanks for the informative video Priya! Which procedure do you think helps a person more with removal of tongue tie - frenectomy or frenuloplasty?
It depends on the case! That’s not easy to answer because it can vary from person to person.
I have too high and narrow palate for my tongue to rest at the palate, there's always a gap there where my tongue cannot reach, so it can't create suction. Also my mouth is so narrow and small that for my tongue to "rest" it extends way beyond my front teeth and the tip coming out between the lips, slightly. That's the least painful position and when I can breathe the best. If I keep the tongue in, and behind the teeth, it's in a too tight of a space and also obstructs my breathing because the mass of tongue pressing against the back of my throat. So simply, there's not enough space in my mouth for a normal sized tongue and there's no way I can make it to take it's natural and normal position. I have severe TMJ issues and I went through many years of failed orthodontics as a child and teen. It did not help. So I guess I can't but suffer.
I’m sorry to hear this! Have you consulted with a practitioner who provides myofunctional therapy?
I am an RDH that sees the benefits of myofunctional therapy and would like to offer that value to my patients. Where can I receive more training or continuing education to do so?

Is my tongue supposed to touch my upper teeth? Some say that it shouldn’t but if it doesn’t my tongue is just too far back and it makes it hard to swallow and it starts hurting after a while of keeping it there
No it should not.
Check your body posture. Since exercising adjusting my posture, I have noticed my teeth gaps closing and my tongue resting farther back naturally. Look up “stacking” ribs over pelvis. My jaw strength improved significantly since I had been noticing weakness for awhile. My tmj issues are improving so much. This is how I ended up here.
i wish i learned more about this before i had braces. i think i saw something like this beforehand and wanted to have faith in it but didn’t know if it was true or where to get help so i went ahead with braces bc i wanted perfect teeth. well my teeth looked straight already if you werent trying to look like i was. If i knew about this reality I wouldn’t have extracted all my wisdom teeth and wouldve waited to get braces. Now my tongue really doesn’t fit in my mouth bc of the loss of space which makes this harder.

Hi Priya. I just found your channel. I've been suffering from TMD for at least a decade. I've had low tongue posture, with reverse swallowing, ever since I was a child and my nose was stuffed for a whole Summer. I had braces in High School and my orthodontist advised me to hold a button on the roof of my mouth with my tongue for 30 minutes a day. I also remember being told that I'd likely need surgery and that its not covered under insurance. This is what really confuses me. I experience so much pain in my jaw, neck, back, and shoulders, yet its still not covered under insurance. I just don't understand. Could you do a video talking about why TMJ and TMD treatments aren't covered by insurance?
Sorry to hear you’ve been going through this! Some insurances do have TMJ/TMD coverage.

@theTMJdoc does tongue posture relate to sleep bruxism problems? Have you seen patients with this issue. If so, improving the tongue posture, can bruxism be minimised and helped ( not completely cured, may be with the on going night guard as well)
tongue posture and bruxism are related but correcting tongue posture won't necessarily stop bruxism. :/
@@theTMJdoc thanks for the reply 👍🏽

Why does adopting this proper tongue posture cause a feeling of tightness and pressure across the scalp musculature?
It may be because you have a tongue tie. You should not attempt correcting your tongue posture on your own. I'd recommend working with a practitioner who provides myofunctional therapy.
Recently got TMJ symptoms and getting treated with my orthodontist with occlusal splint for upper teeth, they said it may take 3 to 4 months to completely get rid of it, and they also suggested me to not take much stress and eat soft foods. I don't have proper tongue posture, so now I'm trying to fit tongue in roof of my mouth(mewing), but I can't do because back of my tongue won't fit in the roof. I'm pretty confused now, don't know what to do.....
Sorry to hear this and best of luck to you!
Just want to check do you reply to everyone or just the paid subscribers ? 😅
I respond to everyone. I don’t think there are any paid subscribers
What happens if those problems that come from trying proper tongue posture happen to you? Is it completely reversible? Do you also know anything about hard mewing? Ppl have developed so many problems from hard mewing because Mike mew was irresponsible and tried spreading mewing as something anyone can do on their own 😑
I wouldn't recommend trying to attain proper tongue posture on your own. I'd recommend consulting with a practitioner who provides Myofunctional Therapy.
The thing is, I have already tried and it has resulted in negative outcome. I believe hard mewing caused misalignment of my cranial bones: definite changes in the maxilla, palate, etc. Do you know if myofunctional therapy and the correct orthodontics or cranial osteopathy can help realign my cranial bones?
@@MI-qj6xr I’m not sure? I hope it can help! It’s hard for me to say without examining you.
@@theTMJdoc thank you. That’s understandable. Would you know if there’s any type of headgear or device (although quite counterintuitive for conventional orthodontics that pushes for forward and upward growth) that can move the maxilla in a posteroinferior direction? Or if such a device, if not already in existence, could be made specifically for people of my case?
Why didn't my dentist tell me this when I was young. My teeth are all screwed up... tysm

Hey, quick question, I've subbed too ! For my tongue, Its perfectly behind the top incisors(not pressing). Occasionally when I breath through my nose, sometimes I feel air reaching the top of my tongue too(my tip 2/3 of the tongues stays on top, bottom is kept unconscious haha). Hi, are there any cases when it would be better to keep your tongue behind the lower teeth? If your lower jaw is narrower than the upper for example.
thanks priya very helpful as usual! was wondering say a patient has a bad bite and gets braces, then later on gets composite bonding / veneers. What happens if the teeth start shifting later on, can the braces be put onto of the veneers? have been debating between composite bonding and veeners but am 26 now so not too sure when they would need replacing. thanks
Yes, braces can be put on veneers but they could be damage in the process of removing the brackets.

This topic is incredibly educational. After getting dental crowns on my upper and lower incisors, I developed a habit of letting my tongue rest in the middle because I couldn’t get used to the foreign touch. Interestingly, this has contributed to mouth breathing (especially since I also have sinusitis) and has led to potential gastric issues like bloating.
Could you provide some tips for improving nasal breathing and maintaining proper tongue posture in this situation?
By the way, I learned so much from this video-thank you! ❤
Hi Dr. Priya! Great video, but I have some questions if you don't mind! How would one be able to know if one's tongue is fully touching the roof of one's mouth? Also, how does one with a longer tongue not touch their teeth while letting it rest on the roof of their mouth?
The only way I could know if the tongue is fully in the correct position is with a CT scan which shows the tongue. As for your second question, that may be be better answered by a myofunctional therapy provider.
@@theTMJdoc isn't there a good chance tongue posture would not be normal during ct scan, as standing or sitting posture would not be normal if you know you're being looked at for those things and you just paid for worthless CT scan?

Back when I had braces I had a palate expander across the roof of my mouth which made my tongue gravitate there and I think thats where my tongue position would normally be if it wasn't for this permanent retainer.
I wouldn’t recommend removing the permanent retainer because I’ve seen the teeth shift very quickly after this is done.
Same for me. I had the retainer removed 1 month ago and I regret it deeply. My teeth are shifting and there is still a lot of pressure on it. I’m doing training with the face former now for proper tongue posture and swallow technique. I have problems with my cervical spine and I guess my problems with tmj are due to this
So my normal posture has been my tongue against my teeth for my whole life and my teeth are crooked because of that, so I need braces or is there anything I can do?
I would recommend pursuing myofunctional therapy for this. Then braces.

Is it normal for my mouth to be a bit bloated when doing this
I wouldn't say that's normal, no.
*I did mewing on my own and now i have uneven bite. My tmj is worse now.*
sorry to hear that!
same bro how did you fix it then??
hello , couple of days earlier , i was playing with my tongue and pushing my tongue to downward part of mouth teeth gum and it was fun and i did it for 3 day continuously and after 3 day my tongue feel uncomfortable like its not resting or floating or like its (u) shape midde portion going downward ,what should i do now to get back to normal ?
I would recommend seeing a professional who is trained in providing myofunctional therapy.
@@theTMJdoc myofunctional therapist is not available in my place instead can i visit ENT doctor
@@sterferking1109 sure that’s a good place to start. Good luck!
@@theTMJdoc thanks , and one last question
I am still confuse where should i place my tongue tip at the top
Like
My tip should be touching the gum of top teeth or
At the little back where there is like hump slope steep
@@sterferking1109 the soft tissue hump right behind the front two teeth.
Doctor plz help me i am suffering from tmj disorder for two years starting cracking and now jaw locking plz help me😪😪😪😪😪
Sorry you’re going through this. There’s not much I can do over the internet to help you. You can try the muscle releases in my UA-cam playlist called “tmj exercises/muscle releases”. Many people have contacted me saying that these have helped with pain.
Go in and see a specialist, get an MRI of your jaw so you can see the route problem if it was caused due to trauma ( Ripped Out Of Socket ) Or caused from muscle inflammation or stress from there they would find the deeper route and give you advice on what is available to do next for treatment . Hope you get better man
Is mewing same?
No it's not. Please watch this video and let me know if you have any questions.

Will mewing will bring my maxila forward I have a slight overbite so should I do it or not ? Pls replyy 😣🙏
I’m not sure if Mewing will do that. I really cannot make recommendations for you without examining you in person.
@@theTMJdoc Thanks for replying but isn't the main function of mewing is on maxila as the tongue in it rest on pallet and also I can't properly swallow after I started it
I bite my cheeks while swallowing
@@uniquequeenhobbies1933 if you can’t do it properly you should consult with a practitioner who does myofunctional therapy. You may have a tongue tie.
Tongue pressed up against the roof of the mouth when not talking?? Wtf ya that’s never happened lol
Yes that’s the correct position! 😊🙏🏼
Yeah I can’t get anything but the tip of my tongue to the roof of my mouth…
Yes! Get evaluated by someone who provides myofunctional therapy.
Thank you very much for this✨
You’re welcome!
So this entire video offered nothing but “check out it these other videos” and “pay a doctor”. How helpful. Some people definitely can’t afford going to a doctor about this 😂
Thank you for your kind comment. Much appreciated.
question if u dont mind. after tongue tie surgery, can one develop strain under the chin. like the supra hyoid muscles. ever since i had it done i started having problems n tension there that i did not have before. i also started having issues while speaking which weren't there before. it started right after having the surgery done which makes me regret it and im wondering if there is anything i can do to fix this. thank you !!!
Have you been doing Myofunctional Therapy since the tongue tie release?
@@theTMJdoc i wasnt really given too many exercises from the dentist who performed it. so i wasnt sure exactly which ones to do. im finding some online and perhaps i can just try those. thx so much for ur responses, really appreciate it.
going for proper tongue posture on my own.
I really wouldn't recommend that.
it forces you to breathe with your gut and diaphragm instead of your chest
yes!
you act like that is accessible for everyone sis.
Geographically, myofunctional therapy is accessible because all you need is internet access. Financially I know it’s not accessible for everyone.
Very informative
Thank you!
Is mewing exercises harmful?
I wouldn't recommend them if you have TMJD pain.
