Social anxiety leads me to isolate my self from society 3 years ago so I lost my speaking skills and I can feel the effects of not using my voice for a long time. Now thank God i overcome my fears and I’m here doing your exercises before getting a job and start talking to people again. Thank you! 🙏😉
I a retired Home Health Aide ( CERTIFIED) I took care of people with strokes, head injury, dementia and Parkinson's. I did these exercises with my patients I did a lot of encouragement. I very hurt because my son is autistic and never got any exercise for my son and asked told them I was a AIDE, one on one is the best to help people. Thank you for your support.
Hi Shaun, I’m so glad to hear you were able to do these exercises with the people you were helping. These are excellent resources for caregivers helping those with neurological disease in their daily routine. I hope you find the support you need for your son and are able to work with a speech therapist to address his individual communication needs. Keep advocating! 🙌
@@SpeechSecrets Thank you for your support. I open up my patients care book and with your videos it's helping me out I'm doing a lot of visual with him and I have SPL Ittleman book. So once again thanks, I always say you guys are the brick and we are the glue. 😊💕
I wish I found your channel 2 years ago. I'm not going to share my long story here, but my speech became unclear 2 years ago. My tongue became super weak, yet also super tense. I have excess saliva, and dry lips. I have seen a speech therapist for this, but she didn't believe in stretching & doing exercises to help your tongue. I believe the majority of my speech issue relates back to my tongue. I've had such trouble finding actual help.. And even though it's been 2 years, I'm really hoping these exercises make a difference in my speech.
Hi Saundra, I’m sorry to hear about your struggles with speech. Glad you are finding these educational resources helpful. Keep advocating for yourself- way to persist in looking for solutions to your health care. 💜
Thank you so much from Singapore. I had a stroke, quite lost after discharge from hospital and found your excellent youtube site, and l am starting to practise them daily. Will update progress and improvements in future comments. ❤❤❤
Hi @gladiator4879, I am so sorry to hear about your stroke and I think many can relate to being lost after leaving the hospital. Way to be an advocate and start finding resources for your recovery. Hoping you have access to rehab services professionals in Singapore as well to help get some guidance. Many blessing in your rehabilitation journey. Would love to hear about your progress!
@SpeechSecrets Absolutely Yes! These exercises helped to strengthen the tongue and facial muscles of the person I was assisting. You are the best ❤❤❤❤❤
I'm so grateful to have found your page. Had a stroke in December 24 and my peach was fine but has gotten progressively worse since got home. Thank you so much for your time and efforts ❤
Hi Debbie! I'm so sorry to hear about your stroke and the progressive speech difficulties. I hope you find the videos on this channel to be a helpful resource. Comments like yours really keep me motivated to keep creating and sharing knowledge, so thanks for taking the time to write. 🙌
Hi! This is not my area of expertise. But I am very interested in learning more about orofacial myofunctional therapy. If I complete their training, I’ll reconsider your request! Thanks for commenting and letting me know what type of education you’re looking for.
Not for awhile unfortunately, I have through January planned out already. I have a running list for future vids though and that one is on it. I'll drop the link here once I get going on it. BTW I love chess!
Daring me to do another set after the first round is one thing. But to keep daring me after the second, third and fourth is just getting cruel at this point. But i'm no quitter.
Thank you for your video! Please, any suggestions or modifications for the tongue elevation practice? My frenulum prevents my tongue from curling up towards my nose. How do I modify this practice?
Individuals experiencing discomfort with the frenulum may benefit from trying to not rest the bottom of their tongue on the teeth. Elevate the tongue a little bit when protruding the tongue and moving side to side. Could also practice curling the tongue upwards towards the roof of the mouth or front upper teeth by opening the jaw a little bit.
That is really helpful. I find when I do the tongue narrowing in the third exercise that my tongue is curled upwards in a U shape, whereas yours appears flatter and triangular. Do I just need more practice with a mirror?
I cannot comment on your experience specifically. However, it took me some practice with a mirror to be able to achieve the fat/narrow tongue exercise consistently. Sticking one’s tongue out slightly may also help achieve the narrow position.
I'm a psychology major in Georgia studying behavioral and cognitive psychology I have a friend who had a stroke a few years ago and I'm using your videos to help she cant afford speech therapy so I'm doing it do you have any pointers for to use
How kind that you are helping out your friend with limited resources. Perhaps speech therapy is a field of interest for you in your future! It would be great to hear from other viewers who are also caregivers on pointers they have found helpful......... Any contributors to this? @shaunwalker6651 @caringcrystal11 @denisewhitaker5116
It very much depends on the person and the reason for their slurred speech. You might find these videos educational: ua-cam.com/video/6CzsZ5rNFyk/v-deo.html
Great question! I generally include speech based exercises for improving diction for individuals without overt oral motor weakness or oral motor coordination difficulties. Putting this on my video ideas list!
Hi Kessup! I'm so sorry to hear about the nerve damage and your recent radiation/chemo. Have you spoken to your medical provider about this and asked for a speech therapy referral? I hope you are seeing some improvement. I am legally restricted from making any person specific medical recommendations but I do hope that you find these videos helpful and are able to get the medical support you need.
Hi Shawn! I cannot give any person specific advice. I hope you are able to find a provider who can evaluate your speech with consideration to your medical history to identify your rehabilitation path. Thanks for commenting and hope you get the support you need with this. 🙌
This is definitely a hard exercise to master. I’ve never thought about the effect that tongue splitting would have with that muscle function/control. Keep me posted on if it gets any easier as you continue to practice!
Hi Nes! These exercises are not specific to individual sounds. However, articulation and sound production requires some tongue strength and range of motion for most sounds. For example, with the “R” sound, the tip of the tongue must have enough strength and range of motion to move upwards and slightly back towards the roof of the mouth. I will be working on an “R” video in the next few months so stay tuned!
Doc can you tell me which excercises to do to prevent the base of the tongue to obstruct the airway while sleeping, if you can explain which muscles are responsable for that would be awesome as well, Thank you!!!
Hi there! I do not have any videos on this currently but it's a great idea for future videos as there is research on oropharyngeal exercises reducing snoring. I will let you know if I research and produce something in this area!

I'll brainstorm that one! Thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks for your presentation. What should be if the tongue can be raised even to touch the palate..after a stroke
Hi @rotich6440! A little confused on your question. Do you mean if it can not be raised?
Hi, do you still have tonsils ? And maybe video with soft palate exercises?😊
Tonsils, why do you ask? Soft plate exercise video is a great idea!

Same here David - the narrowing seems most difficult. I also narrowing my mouth instead of my tongue. We'll just keep practicing!

I notice with tongue out and down that if I don't make a point of showing my upper teeth like you do, the whole mouth gets depressed lol.
Great awareness! Yes it can be challenging to keep your jaw stable and keep the movement isolated to the tongue.

Couldn't upward😢
When I stick my tongue out of my mouth, why can't I lift my tongue up? I can only curl my tongue tip up
Some individuals experience decreased lingual range of motion due to the size of the lingual frenulum.

My client's tongue is too short that is the major challenge am confused
A tongue tie would also make performing lingual elevation or depression anatomically challengingly.
