  • There's a newer, updated version of this video at • My Packing List For A ...
    After 43 cruises, I've learned through trial and error what to bring along with me on a cruise vacation. My packing list contains a few things you probably haven't thought of. I imagine that a few people might even think a few of these are weird. But each item has a purpose, and helps make my time on the ship a little better.
    Leave a comment with other things you recommend bringing on a cruise!
    A few items I recommend:
    Indoor/outdoor thermometer: amzn.to/2ENLTuV
    Luggage scale: amzn.to/2EQqVvA
    Noise-cancelling headphones: amzn.to/2CFbVL5
    220v to 110v power converter plugs: amzn.to/2ET9t5l
    6-outlet power strip without surge suppressor: amzn.to/2F5fEGO

    Bit late here, but we recently on Harmony of the Seas and they were confiscating ALL power strips regardless - as they said with all the weird countries on board, and different models and such a big ship, its far to time consuming to work it out so they just take them all now. When we got off there was a table with literally hundreds of them on it , including ours which you could pickup - it was such a line, we just left them - they are cheap. Just a suggestion, might be easier just to not take them at all.

    i also take: 1) a NIGHT LIGHT whichi put in the cabin to find my way to the restroom; 2) MAGNETS to hang all the printouts the ship provides on a wall; 3) a 3D COLORFUL LIGHTWEIGHT ITEM to tape to outside of cabin door. it lets me quickly locate my cabin. i use a pineapple honeycomb centerpiece and only expand it 1/2 way - $1.99 at a party supply store; 4) CLEAR PACKING TAPE, which is use to tape objects to my cabin door & to cover my liquids as the covers seem to get loose in air travel. want to avoid oozing goods. I leave a small flashlight in the bathroom, so i don't need to turn on the bright bathroom light during a night visit.

    Great video Jim .
    another thing I would say to those first time cruisers, don't buy your souvenirs on the ship the first few days. By the last 2 days everything goes on sale by design

    I'm sure when you said beach bag, people went "what" yeah, I'll tell you we forgot one once & boy did we miss it! I bring several of the items you mentioned, my family used to make fun of me as being "too prepared" but when I had safety pins & duct tape, they didn't laugh anymore.

    Always great recommendations Jim. Thank you. I am forwarding this to a cruise client of mine!! :) My best recommendation is to buy a cologne or body lotion and don't use it until after you sail. When you return home, every time you use it - it will take you right back to that great cruise. Our senses are amazing!

    Hi Jim
    When you talked about the power strip, it reminded me a cruise I did last year on Ovation of the Seas out of Hong Kong. During the pre boarding security check, our family was denied to take the power strip on board the ship, they say it was to prevent power surge or sth. Now I heard that the Ovations is coming to Alaska next year so I thought you might wanna get a heads up first. Thanks.

    Great Video. My wife and I took a power strip on our last cruise and the convenience was incredible. One thing I would suggest as a "must bring" (and it really depends on the length of your cruise) is a specific set of clothes for dinner on elegant night. If you're not dressed appropriately then they might not let you into the dining room.

      Took my mom on a celebrity cruise last August, rented a scooter and requested handicapped room. The staff was so helpful. The second night of the cruise, a staffer overheard me tell mom that I wished there was a way to watch the show closer and not block isle with scooter. He took us to behind stage wheelchair lift and to the front row. I memorized how to operate the lift and got mom to the seats every show.

    Definately love the tip about the OTC meds! Learned the hard way recently on Oasis. One of us got a bad cold/sore throat and we had some advil cold & sinus, which works great, but not enough! the stuff they carry on the ship or at the pharmacy in Cozumel is not the same stuff and DOESN'T WORK! Will be very well prepared next cruise! good tip about the plugs too - didn't realize they had euro plug converters.

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  6 років тому

      I regret that I focused so much on the cost issue of getting OTC meds on a cruise ship, because that's not even the most important issue. If you're really sick, it's one thing to pay a little more for some meds on a cruise ship than you would have to at home. But the real issue is that a cruise ship simply doesn't stock the huge variety of OTC meds that your local pharmacy would have. What if you want a cough syrup that doesn't have any pain reliever in it? Or what if you want a decongestant that won't interfere with sleeping? Your local pharmacy has a huge selection, with all the quirky variations you might want, but a cruise ship only has the most basic stuff in their little store.

I thought maybe I did forget them. I finally had to purchase sunscreen on the ship, as the one I was going to buy in port was so expensive. Come to find out that I had put them in the back of one of those corner cabinets in our NCL cabin. Your check list would of come in handy. Also I like your flashlight idea and the duct tape. On our next cruise I will be sure to add that to our list. NCL Bliss 1/19.

    Good advice. Princess gives you a beach bag, but I don't know about the others. The power strip is a must take, especially on the older ships, one with USB outlets, if possible. Another tip is don't overpack. Unless you're some fashion slave, you don't need three changes of clothing for each day on the cruise.

    4:00 you could also use a magnet for the screen on the thermometer since most cabin walls are magnetic

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  6 років тому

      Yes, a magnet is a good way to attach things to the walls of a cruise ship. But... I think a 3M command strip can hold a LOT more weight than a small magnet can. The command strips are VERY secure, but come off easily at the end of the cruise. When I was on the MSC Seaside last month, we did a "cabin crawl" where I got to see some other people's cabins. One of them had a magnetic hook on the wall. I thought it was a really cool idea... but I was curious how much weight the magnetic hook could support. There was a baseball cap on a table nearby, so I hung the baseball cap from the magnetic hook. A baseball cap is not very heavy at all... probably less than one pound... yet that magnetic hook could not support it. As soon as I put the baseball cap on the hook, the magnetic hook slid all the way down the wall. So, I really couldn't see the point of that magnetic hook, if it couldn't even support a lightweight hat. A 3M Command Strip between that hook and the wall would have supported ten hats, easily.

      It should definitely be more stable than Empress Of The Seas. The bigger the ship, the more stable it will be. But also, since you seem to be sensitive to the motion of the ship, be sure to book a cabin on a lower floor, towards the center of the ship... no matter which cruise ship you cruise on.

    • @JimZim

      Is it possible that your power strip had a surge suppressor in it?
      It may also be that some of the cruise ships just impose a rule of "no power strips at all" because it's too hard to tell which ones have surge suppressors and which ones don't. I actually carry my power strip in my carry-on so that if they ever try to confiscate it, I can at least try to convince them that they don't need to confiscate mine since it does not have a surge suppressor. And you're going to think I'm really weird, but I also carry a copy of the Coast Guard bulletin that explains the issue. I started doing all this after they confiscated my power strip, from my checked luggage, on a Carnival cruise.

  • @mpace58

    Starting to feel a little unconnected from Jim... Once upon a time, I could relate to a balcony cabin on a somewhat older ship. Nowadays, its the newest ships in the exclusive areas (Haven-NCL, and Havanna-CCL). I used to book based off of Jim's reviews but now I can't because I'm not staying in the specialty areas...

    Ok FYI the EU converters are problematic I was in Spain for three days before my cruise.
    I plugged in my CPAP machine to check it it blew a fuse when I turned it on in the room. Now I’m in Spain trying to find a 10 amp fuse.
    I spent two of my days trying to find fuse finally I found the fuse in a shop that sells discount electronics run by asian family.

      Yeah, you have to be really careful about getting the right power adapter, depending on where you are going to use it. If you take a look at the Amazon product page for the ones I use on cruise ships, you'll see it mentions that it is specifically for use in Italy. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MRKRBDV I knew that would be the one that would work on cruise ships, since many shipyards are in Italy. I'm no expert about the differences in the power plugs and power systems around Europe, but I suspect that you ran in to some trouble because you were in Spain and their system must be slightly different than what your converter was designed for.

    Do we need a lanyard for ship ID

    • @JimZim

      I just keep my ship ID card in a pocket. But if you think you might be wearing clothes that don't have pockets, a lanyard might be useful.

    Was you possibly given a reason if any, why surge suppressors are banned on cruise ships?

    • @JimZim
      @JimZim  Рік тому +1

      There was some kind of incident... a fire, I think, that was started by a power strip with a surge suppressor. The US Coast Guard put out a bulletin highlighting the dangers of using a surge suppressor on a marine electrical system, which works differently than the electrical system in a home. The cruise lines reacted to that bulletin by banning surge suppressors.

    Thanks Jim these are all good suggestions but I think the only weird thing you take on your cruises is that giant microphone lol. ...They do make smaller ones you know - some you can even clip on your lapel. Just sayin.

    Good job but I have 2 suggestions. Small zip plastic bags. During excursions keep your wallet and room key and passport inside in case you go in the water or keeps the sand out on the beach. My most important thing is swim ear. If you swim you know what it is. It gets the water out of your ears instantly. Water in my ears drives me nuts. Its the first thing I pack on a cruise.
