Hey, cruisers, we are back with a fun little video on prohibited items on a cruise. We've done lots of videos on what to pack for a cruise, but not so many on what NOT to pack on a cruise. We had a lot of fun with this one, but there definitely are some items prohibited on a cruise, and trying to pack prohibited cruise items can lead to embarrassment, and big delays for you and your cruise ensemble. Of course, we don't cover everything that is prohibited on a cruise, so be sure to check out your cruise line's prohibited items list if you have any questions or concerns about what not to pack for a cruise. We had some help from our subscribers on real stories about what items are prohibited on a cruise, so big thanks to them for helping out. Their contributions help make this topic a bit more fun to watch. If you want information about what to pack for a cruise vacation be sure to check out some of our previous packing for a cruise videos: • Packing for a cruise -...

Great video Sherri. We can't believe some of the things people bring with them either. We haven't ever been called to the "naughty room" and don't intend to. LOL It's a fun place to walk by and see all the weird items people try to sneak aboard though. LOL
When I think of Items that most cruise ship companies do not allow longboard, I think of a list of weapons that Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority doesn’t allow into The East Asian country without lawful permits or other authorization that is mentioned in the UA-cam video “Crimewatch 2010 episode 5 - To declare or not to declare” & that includes, but is not limited to:
- Handcuffs
- butterfly knives
- nunchuckus
- flick knives
- Barongs (type of knife of Southern Philippine origin)
- kukris
- batons (also known as truncheons)
Hi FRANK!!
can i bring a drone??
one time I was going trough security and the family in front of me packed their own life jackets
Daniel Patterson XD
Is that like those poofy coats....I had one of those, once. no one could sit in the front seat when I was driving, didn't have room...they had to sit in the back seat....
Wonder why they bothered. Cruise lines are required to make sure there are more than enough of those for every passenger.
😂🤣😂Just trying to be extra safe
Quantavious Jones I was going too do that 😂
Bring thermacare heat wraps instead of the heating pad
lol I can't believe someone would take a toaster on a ship!!
I have smuggled booze on a time or two 🤦🏾♀️🙈
my wife bring her own pillow.....has 2 have her own....
the guy in the cabin next to me was furious cause they confiscated his nespresso machine AND bagel toaster...
Edna's World what’s the best way to take booze on a ship and not get caught lol
Guess you ain't allowed to cook in your stateroom!
I'm going on my first cruise in 3 days!
Really that's cool. I'll hopefully be going on my second cruise with my mom in July this year :) . The ship we are going on will be the Liberty of the Seas from Royal Caribbean.
JoshKicks what ship?
Ryan Pipgras i am going on the Norwegian breakaway
TheMeloettaful same except different ship
JoshKicks, I’m going on my fourth cruise this summer
My son and I was chaperoning our high school choir on Royal Caribbean and being the techie he is he put a surge bar in his carry on. The kids and I had a good laugh at his expense since we were all held up while he was "talked to". Lesson learned.
So glad u posted this! Going on royal caribbean cruise in a month & i was so ready to pack my steamer!!! Ugh! Back to the drawing board...i have tried wrinkle release sprays but they don't seem to get the job done.
Btw, i bought packing cubes because of all ur awesome packing videos! Never knew they were a thing until ur videos, keep 'em coming!
What did you do for your wrinkled clothes? Going on RC and trying to think of alternatives.
If you can pack a hair straightener, then you can also use that as an iron... I've done it. Just be very careful and don't leave it on clothes for very long.
Hi Sheri, good info as usual. I got off a cruise a few weeks ago and they were also making a big deal about the Samsung Note 7. They even went so far as to say if a cabin steward saw one in your room, it would be taken. They said they would be put in a safe place and be returned at the end of the cruise. I'm retired law enforcement and once traveled with a backpack I recently took to the range for qualifying and they found five empty magazines I thought they did a good job catching them even though they arent much good without bullets and a gun. LOL They offered to let me take them back to my car or they would have to bring a police officer come over and talk to me. I could have gone back to the desk and just register as an armed flyer. The cop was nice and offered to lock them up in their office and I picked them up when I got home.
Another reason to check policies in advance is with DRONES! I know the Princess does NOT allow them onboard, even packed away for use in the ports. Carnival permits them to be stored in the room, but must be used off the ship and according to the rules of the respective country [makes sense!].
Yep, that bullet thing happen more often than people realize. My son had it happen to him at the airport. One tiny bullet had slipped into a tiny crevasse of his backpack. He had NO IDEA, but they can find anything with those scanners! Now he does not put that type of gear in his luggage. Lesson learned!
Regarding taking wine aboard- most lines allow it, but also charge a "corkage fee" to open and serve it to you. May still cost less than buying theirs, and you can have exactly what you want, but you are not getting by completely free on it.
You don’t look nearly old enough to pull off a Lawrence Welk reference. Nicely done.
Can you bring a flashlight? I carry a small pocket flashlight with a clip on it in my pocket. Sounds silly but they come in pretty handy when you're trying to look for something in a poorly lit area.
You sure can!
Thanks for the reply!
People were able to get pot aboard if they wanted to when I was there (before 9/11 ). Before you had to lose your belt, shoes, etc. they'd just bring it in bodily in their socks and shoes. Getting it on wasn't to hard-using it was. It leaves a rather distinctive odor, for those of you who've never tried it, and you can't do it openly in front of everyone. You could only do it from a balcony cabin and even then people could smell it in the hallway.
Rachael Adler edibles 😉
I think Emily was talking about my dad he accidentally had a loaded bullet in his hunting bag even though he had washed and dried it a week before. Safe to say we got delayed an hour or two
I know they say no water and nothing with a heating element but I was allowed to bring gallons of baby water on board and a baby bottle steamer for my 11 month old to make her bottles while on our 7 day. The steamer has a hot plate but they allowed it with no question.
What really bothers me is not only can't I bring my bubble maker, but that I'm old enough to know what the thing is..
+carolyn lucca haha, exactly!
Lol. I feel your pain
I grew up with Laurance Welk. Loved the bubbles.
Excellent video..thanks for all the effort and work you put into your videos! Always informative. Keep up the good work.
"Know your ship before you cruise" - I have watched an UNHOLY number of ship tours specifically for this purpose...
I always take a mini steamer I bought on hsn on all of my disney cruises. my husband and I are embarking on our first disney cruise kid free to alaska and I'm looking for tips on packing for flight and cruising for an overpacjer like myself. i cant imagine taking only 3 pairs of shoes. We usually drive to ports but this one we have to fly to. So I'm looking for tips on not over packing. This is very helpful. Thanks
My iron was taken on Royal, but I got away with it on Norwegian. Next time, I'm taking a 2 1/2 inch flat iron. I was good when they took the iron because I ironed everything before leaving and packed it in packing cubes and used the Downy Wrinkle Releaser Spray...worked like a charm in the steamy shower.
Hi Sheri. You whipped up another great vlog, as usual. I don't know if you remember, but I told you in an earlier vlog that I used to work on one of the big three. My answer to your title is "good grief, where should I even begin?"
Haha, NO kidding huh?
It would be a sad sad day if i could not bring my curling iron & hair straightener... My hair would be a wreck!
Carnival allowed my friends to bring theirs. The regulations stated if it was considered a fire hazard it would be confiscated.
Alicia Langmack I'm going on s cruise in January. Carnival victory. I NEED my flat iron. 😳
I have cruised many times and always brought my flat iron, never had a problem. You will be fine to bring it, unless things have changed.
I'm addicted to your channel! I started watching and now I can't stop!
Do you think anyone would notice if I tried to sneak my 25lb Bichon, Bubba on board?? He is a certified companion dog - but he also failed basic obedience twice!! He's a good boy (cuter than the towel animals), but he whines incessantly when he sees food - the buffet would be Bubba's favorite place on the ship!!
+bonnie bergstein Poor Bubba! He'd be all over those chicken tenders!
Bubba would be the one wearing his tuxedo keeping his eyes on the chef at the slicing station (but chicken tenders would make him wag his little tail too)!!
A few mini booze bottles can be packed & get by security in shoes. We also use empty & clean saline & contact solution bottles for clear liquors like gin & sliver rum! These are effective for bringing a small amount of alcohol... If you enjoy more than two drinks a day, just go with the ship's alcohol drinks package. Princess, Celebrity & Royal offer great value drink packages.
Renee S. Or maybe just forego the liquor just for a few days. That's an awful lot of trouble for something not necessary
My dinner table mate's son brought a whole case of .22's bullets onboard. Delayed the ship 30 minutes while the captain gave his blessing
Aw man I wanted to get high on a hover board
Well, there goes my candlelit handcuff costume hoverboard party with bubbles and marijuana-infused espresso. What am I going to do on sea days now?!
A person would have to be high to bring a canoe on board
A couple a few cabins down from us were taken off the ship on the first day in cuffs because they brought drugs on board. Unlike passengers, police CAN bring hand cuffs on board! And how embarrassing for that couple!
On one cruise I was questioned about my metal finger nail filler, I was 12 and wanted to be like my mom. On the same cruise my 15yr old sister was questioned about her strawberry green tea she was drinking while tying board. We got some strange looks. This was 15 plus years ago though, customs has changed a lot since then.
hahha the things people bring on a ship , really enjoyed this episode .at the screening section before you board my brother in law on one cruise had long bladed scissors taken away and the next cruise it was a pocket knife my hubby and i decided the next cruise we would meet them on board.
Does Carnival allow hair straighteners, curlers etc?
yup, I took a whole bunch of hair curlers(different sizes), and a straighter, no problem
Concha Campa oooohh. Thank goodness. Going on a cruise in January. I HAVE to have my flat iron.
At Costa Cruise is also prohibited an iron hair... so I tried a hair treatment (keratine) that It went OK three months but It damaged my skin from my hair making a serious burn. So... I don't know how to straigh my hair without spending a lot of money or not using an iron hair on the cruise.
great video! we were actually planning on bringing handcuffs on our cruise in a couple of weeks! glad to have this psa !
So I have a spine issue and use a heating pad Day and night. I understand the fire hazard, but is there a way I could have permission from a medical reason to use it?
I wonder if they would mind a surprise slip n' slide set up in the atrium? Or a trampoline on the aft?
+thejokerspeaks Hee hee!! but I just had a visual of someone trampolining a little to high and flying overboard :-)
I tried to bring my macbook but they said i could still bring it LOL
Great tip on not bringing a steamer... because I was definitely going to!
For the no irons one u can use staithers they do the same job
Packing now and needed to know about the iron. Thanks. 7th cruise and still didn't know.
Have a wonderful cruise!!!
Hi Sheri. I'm going a bit off topic here. Crystal doesn't have any water slides, and RCL has never had people doing guest lectures, but they ALL have pier runners. I can't speak for anyone else, but I think a vlog on that would be great (probably good for a thousand thumbs up too :). ).
+Toni O'hara i would love to- we will keep en eye out for them. We've had "slightly late pier walkers" who were more like speed walking to the ship but I've never actually seen any runners
I love your videos! "Know Your SHI (P)!!!!LMAO That's a great t-shirt! You need to get that patented and pressed up. I would definitely buy a few! Lol
I have a fairly restrictive diet and I make bulletproof coffee daily. I was going to take my mini hand blender on my 22 day cruise. I guess I'll need to check with the cruise line to see if I can bring it. I'd hate for it to be confiscated.
It’s probably okay but if you have to replace it, a mini whisk might work - even a motorized one ❤️
So, why was my can of hairspray confiscated (on Royal Caribbean) last year???
I am getting cynical about cruising, where the lines want a monopoly. Gratuities, etc. If a purchase is needed, better for them to pay the ship's price. Ages ago I was on a cruise, and impulses to do it again?
Back in 94 got stopped boarding a princess baltic cruise with my cap guns. I WAS 7, OK!?!? Anyhow, the bobbies were very nice and understanding once they found out they were clearly fake, and being from Arizona, they posed for pictures with me wearing a Bobby helmet and one of them with my Stetson hat on. That picture still hangs in my hallway. AND THEY LET ME ON WITH MY CAP GUNS!!!
jordan hicks stuff have changed over the years because of 9/11. Awesome story though!
I have taken a kettle style steamer with me on a lot of cruises and never was stopped for it on Celebrity, RCi and Carnival. I guess I was just lucky :-)
philip L. I actually think celebrity allows them. I have brought my little mini steamer and I worked.
I thought she was saying know your shit
I thought she said that too
i really dont want to go on a cruise to be so limited, thanks for the tips, this has helped me decide against taking a cruise
I went on Alaskan cruise last August my brother was able to get on board with a box cutter, but they found his wife chocolate chip cookies and they told her she could step out line and eat them or trash them.
+Adrienne Dastgir oh my goodness!
Can you bring e cigs?
Did u ever find out about this one
Anthony Phillips yes you can
My mom sailed on Royal Caribbean about 3 years ago and got sent to the naughty room after coming back from port for bringing a piece of coral she found
Oh no!!!!!
SICK Lawrence Welk reference! Thanks for the tips.
I want to take my drone on a cruise to use at ports. I know idoits have ruined this for most cruise lines as some have tried flying them on the ship. There's a simple storage system any cruise ship can do to make this easy for a fee. Have the staff secure your drone and release it to you upon getting to port. Then you check back in with security upon returning. They take your equipment and you get it back upon disembarkation. I missed out on taking aerial photos and footage in Bermuda because of the strict no Drone policy. Even shipping my Drone was prohibitive because they charge tax on the value of the Drone. So my Phantom 4 Pro would of exceeded $600 in shipping. I do hope cruises can accommodate for this hobby in the future as anyone with a cell phone can take decent on the ground shots of their vacation. But a drone while not uncommon as it use to be still offers breath taking photos.
I have carried a Leatherman multi-tool with me for 20+ years. I don't go anywhere without it I'm going on a Southern Caribbean cruise soon. Will it be a problem to pack my Leatherman in my check-in bag?
Are curling wants and straighteners prohibited too? It said on our cruise line website that they are. I was hoping that was just a suggestion. I don’t think I could survives week without my hair tools.
Yes, they are FINE. I take them on every cruise.
I've been binge-watching your channel, and I just wanted to thank you. I feel so much more prepared and excited because of you. I can tell how much work goes into these videos, and I'm so grateful. I bought some items through your marketplace, and I was wondering if you'd add the GoPro in there! I'm going to get my husband one for his birthday, and I'd love to buy it through your marketplace.
Lisa! Hello and thank you for the kind words! Yes, I’ll
Get that GoPro back in the store immediately- which model are you after!?
The Hero 5 is the one I heard you talk about (I actually heard that specific thing on your cruise gift podcast time).
They’re both in the shop now Lisa. Let us know if we can help further ❤️🎬
Now I have to choose which model!!! I got so flummoxed, I just ordered sandles and an ID badge holder you had there! Coming back for the Go Pro after more research!
I went to the Bahamas last year in December and one of the gift shops had a pocket knife as a souvenir. I almost bought it as a gift but realized it probaly wouldn't be allowed on the ship. I wondered why it was being sold. Even if someone were flying out of the Bahamas you still couldn't take it with you. So, I wonder why it was being sold in the first place.
+tarah M. I think blades under 4 inches are actually allowed :-)
If the gift shop was in port do you think they care? Once the sale is made. Same thing with port liquor stores.
1, 4, 5, 7 all kinda the same thing. heating elements and/or flamey. :)
I need my fan to sleep, and they took my fan, so we went to customer service after the ship left port, told them i need my fan to sleep, so they gave it back, so let them take it, and then complain your cant sleep without it. maybe your will get it back, this was with Norweigian cruise lines,
Your videos have convinced us that a Cruise is not for us. Thank You, we were thinking of Alaska but no more?
Thank you Sherri, love watching your videos.
Loved the TBT to Lawrence Welk show!
+danesha spearman heehee! Glad you can appreciate it :)-
So I know this is an older video but I was curious. My husband carries a small 3" blade pocket knife with him pretty much everywhere he goes. Is that a no go or is his pocket knife allowed? Its kind of hard to separate a Marine from a knife that serves as letter opener, package opener, and just all around open all the things tool. If not allowed I'll just tell him to abide by the same rules you would for an airplane.
From other post small pocket knives are okay on some lines. I think your husband’s is too large. Think the smallest Swiss Army knife.
Knives less than 4 inches blade are ok. So do you pack in carry on bag?
What about hair straighteners or curlers?
My family and friends were annoyed that only wine can be brought on Princess Ships, as most of them only drink pre-mixed spirits
Sadly this is the policy with most major cruise lines, except Disney and very upscale lines
No bubble machines? Damn!
A coffee press is a great idea!
going on carnival valor later on this year. Have passport-will travel
Hi Sherri. Thanks for this video and all of the other ones.... A couple of questions. What about a curling iron? I thought I saw that you brought one on a cruise and it does have a heating element. Next question. My son has one of those ecigarette things. Are those permitted? We are going on the Golden Princess to Alaska after it refit. Thanks
Yes both should be fine but the vape can only be used in certain designated areas onboard
thanks for the information.... wife & I are doing out 1st cruise next year.... even we're not dumb enough to know that you can't bring a toaster or iron onboard a ship.... I might have to ask Celebrity cruses about my wifes hair straighteners though
+Nick Lambert hair straighteners and curling irons are totally fine :-)
great thanks for that... wife doesn't go anywhere without them!
I always wish that I could bring my Kurig every cruise. lol
My only booze story: A passenger got their booze through security but when the porter put the suitcase next to the door (as they do on embarkation day) their smuggling device, whatever it was, opened and drenched the entire suitcase. You could smell it halfway down the deck and I touched the bag as I passed it. The bag was wet even at the top so you know whatever was in there got soaked. Oops.
Toni O'hara hi
I have looked around (probably not deep enough) but I can’t find anything about a luggage limit. FYI i am going on a Carnival cruise. Does anyone know if there is a luggage limit and what it is for the Carnival cruise line?
Lydia_ Ann I dont think so- on my first cruise I took a huge check in suitcase and a rolling carry on lol needless to say Ive learned my lesson- all that stuff isnt necessary
Two checked bags per person for a cruise over five days. Max fifty pounds each. No limit announced on carry one, but remember you might be carrying it for hours before your room is ready.
are you able to bring a flatiron and blowdryer ?
Haven't been on a cruise yet but are curling irons for your hair on the prohibited list?
What about a flat iron and curling iron for my hair can you bring them???
Im getting in a cruise in 4 days but my mother's birthday is also during that time so does it means i cant bring candles?
grew up with Lawrence...but never needed a bubble machine...
You said you can’t take anything with a heating element, does that mean no hair curlers or straightener?
In my experience with cruising, I’ve always been allowed to take curlers/straighteners etc
Is it alright for a small travel iron I cruise in next week
In regard to an item being confiscated--do you get it back at the end of the cruise or is it gone forever? I haven't seen this issue addressed anywhere.
You Should get it back .. But sometimes it requires Persistence on your part. And you should get or ask for a receipt when item is confiscated.
Stupid question maybe but you mentioned that “toy guns” will be confiscated. I can see nerf guns being taken especially if they resemble real guns, but do you know if cruise lines will confiscate water guns?
It’s a tricky subject. Some prohibit and some don’t but I’d leave them home just to be safe
these are helpful im leaving Sunday for a cruise to Mexico
+peacock anne Bon voyage!
Hi Sherri, what about flat irons for hair?
Yes they are allowed
I always roll my clothes in my luggage and I never have to worry about an iron.
Stacy Oglesby the ship wants to make more money. Because most ships have laundry personnel for extra pay.
Dammit what am I going to do without my flamethrower and nunchuks?
I got a good laugh outta this one! Um yeah its for a uh Halloween costume....LOL I am surprised they confiscated the nutri bullet blender tho.
Great into! Thank you Sheri.
Where do you find the prohibited item list?
Usually it pops up if you search it on the cruise line website
for the Halloween costumes....yeeeea right! lol Great info. Anyone know about musical instruments? Thought about my acoustic guitar a couple of times
Always Be Booked Cruises and Vacations HI. I used to work on one of the big three but it's been awhile. Back then you could bring an instrument so long as it wasn't bigger than a harmonica, more or less. I think the theory was that you might have a few to many and then use your clarinet as a weapon.
You can buy booze for your room, cost $$$$$$, but you can buy it thru Carnival, add it 2 your room. about 80.00 per bottle...Pop, water, also....cakes, balloons....
I'm not allowed a hair straighteners or curling iron. So how am I supposed to curl my hair? Any tips please xx
you can find a curling creme gel, just smooth it into wet hair and scrunch. I like the garnier fructis brand
Are straightners allowed ?
How soon before your cruise do you begin packing?
+Theresa Connor usually a few weeks, but I'll
Hang things in a corner of my closet about a month ahead :-)
Can there be a water gun for the ships pool
hi, I make my DIY disinfectant and bug spray n body spray, etc with rubbing alcohol, vinegar,ACV ,distilled water and essential oils...are these allowed on the ship, especially rubbing alcohol (new sealed one from the store)...or will it be confiscated? thanks:)
is it better to make the mixes, label it and take it , to avoid any issues with security?
+SarSrik ss98 definitely pre mix!
