      I met Gabor... way back in the 70's and was a sweet and talented man. I lived on Doheny next to Herbie Hancock and Gabor came to a house party that we had... guess it might have been '74 or so...

      My cousin was 30 years older than myself, so I called him Uncle. He was the conga player on several albums with Gabor. This was great for me whenever they played the Philly area I was there. His stage name was Hal Gordon. I got to meet Gabor who was a true gentleman.Miss them both.

      Thank you, he was a great sideman. I remember him telling my family that he was not fond of being on the road, as he could not even get his clothes laundered in one town due to time restraints. He passed away of a heart attack while living in Los Angeles, his brother, my Uncle Wallace called and asked if I would like to have his equipment as I was also a kit drummer. I of course said yes. The very next day I learned that his apartment was broken into, and all of his instruments were gone. The one thing that I will always have is his music, which will live on forever.

      Carlos, it seems, has one of the most generous hearts in all of MUSIC (let's not limit it to just rock!) He always gives credit where it's due. It's never about himself. He's sure of his talents, he doesn't look to take the spotlight. To those younger listeners, I don't care WHEN you fall under the magic of Carlos, as long as you do. He's been an inspiration to me, glad I was into him from the very first album, and I'll be listening to him when it's time for me to go. Blessings to you, Carlos for all the joy you've brought us.

    I picked up my first Gabor Szabo record around 1980. To be honest, I'm 1/4 Hungarian and was mostly just curious as to what another Hungarian guitarist sounded like who actually lived in the old country. I was quite surprised because the stuff he was playing was from a completely different place than what other fusion guys were doing at the time. He was playing mostly acoustic, but it wasn't the typical Oregon or Paul Winter Consort kind of thing. His music was even more introspective. He didn't play like anyone else. He had gotten to this place where he had found his true self and was expressing that, which I think in the end is exactly what all good jazz musicians are striving for.

    • @wildbillhackett
      @wildbillhackett 8 років тому +8

      Honest to God, I wrote the above comment _before_ I watched this video and heard Santana say basically the same thing at 11:26.

    • @NorbertVarga
      @NorbertVarga  8 років тому +18

      Hi Bill, you're totally right, Gabor himself said the same too! His vision was to mix different kinds of genres together and create something new. If I had to put a tag on his music (which would be wrong I think) I'd say he played "world music" before anyone else. There are a few interviews with him on YT, if I have some spare time in the future I'll make some English subtitles to them.

    • @wildbillhackett
      @wildbillhackett 8 років тому +8

      Yeah, "world music" is a phrase that represents him very well I think.

    I can explain Szabo's posture while he plays. Well, an idea from my own experience. The strap lies on the top of his spine, and the vibration is shot down his neural highway. Reverberating through the floor with passing blows from the sound in the air from the amplifiers/band composition. That is a direct path to the sense of self by occupying all his senses with one focus. By himself he creates a space with his sound, that can hold you from all directions. That's so important with music. To use the waves of the sound, and the language it's speaking, to shape an art project & experience beyond what is heard. Many senses are involved. He is so deep in his senses. He's in an instinctual zone. His ear may be fine tuned to familiarity with his sound, but imagine his level of experience with other senses shaped to his personal comfort. That is something only to be attained by such passion for cultivating the spirit of leaving some of the best history I've ever found behind.
    I would give anything to sit with Gabor, Santana, (don't wanna name any more to detract from the loving subject) and other wizards of their craft just to simply pick their brains. To get a glimpse of their perspective on the musical language and to exchange dialect with them in it. I could go on... I look to the moon often, and remember I am that person I want to consult for such wisdom in these times. That is the one and only perspective I can hold in a long journey, in which I must travel light. This is all for the love in the end. Hopefully all touched by this hold a similar notion somewhere in them.

      that's well put. it's true that everybody has a very specific mind, body, sets of influences and experiences... artistry requires an acceptance of this... the fact that there is nobody to go to for answers. and that is not a bad thing. the hero with a thousand faces.

      @The_G_in_Jesus I always assumed his bent forward posture along with some of his facial expressions were more a result of heroin use. But I like your explanation much better.

    • @openmodalguitar61
      @openmodalguitar61 5 місяців тому

      Another theory on Gabor's playing posture. I think he might be controlling feedback and overall tone by using his body to block or expose the pathway from amps to pick-ups. The hunch and sway might just be part of this technique. Or perhaps he just wants to keep certain angles correct for his hands on strings and frets, and the rest of his body had to adjust to that.

    [Carlos Santana talks about Gabor Szabo]
    … with footage of Szabo’s live performance mostly without interruption or fadeout, which shows Santana’s respect for Szabo's music.
    I’ve been a great fan of Gabor’s music since the 70’s when fusion jazz started budding. And, I've known all along that Gabor is among the greatest influences on Carlos.
    Besides being a great guitarist, Gabor was even greater as a composer/arranger, and his version of Breezin’ was what George Benson played and made famous. And, naturally that's what Benson and Santana jammed on in the late 70's on a TV show hosted by Benson. The vid must be somewhere on UA-cam.
    Check out Gabor’s “The Last Song”, which I’m sure will impress you.

    Gabor Szabo "Baccanal" was one of very first albums I ever bought back in 1967. I've always loved great guitarists, reguardless of genre. In example, another album I bought about same time was Byrds 8 miles high a,bum. (Roger Mcgwinn, 12 string.) So I can easily see Carlos Santana being influenced by Gabor Szabo.

Kiváncsi vagyok hogy hallott e róla mert úgy veszem észre hogy a jazz kicsit mintha távol állna a nőktől, és most elnézést is kérek a Gábor összes hölgy rajongójától :)

      Thankfully the West will always remember him.
      But somehow I have the feeling that he's kinda underrated...

    Thanks Carlos for those words about Gabor Szabo.....he was a true original and is one of my influences too.....(B B King was appreciated, but not an influence like Albert was)

    This may be the only video of any of the members of Pleasure performing live from the 70's... Plus Bobby Lyle's perm is on point... Not to mention these kats got down on Breezin'...

      Breezing was Gabor's opening tune forever. He used to play at the Lighthouse a lot.

    The tone sounds like middle PU position on a Les Paul or Jazz box Gibson. His action sure looks low but there's plenty of sustain with that 42 or 45 model. Great bass line while accurate playing...huge pocket.

      He used a DeArmond Model 210 pickup and flat wound strings on his D45.

      SO there it is. flat wounds and DeArmond.. I have 8 Gabor records in a closet somewhere. Love it. It's funny some of his licks are so cheesy but the rythm section lays down the huge pocket. Then he'll make a signature harmony excursion and the rhythm section allows that to be the psychedelic or human voice. His phrasing is spot on I even like the messed up notes occasionally left on his records. He seems to go all in and play with dynamics that require a band to learn or listen. Battling an acoustic, even with low action, isn't as easy as some other guitars.
      Thanks for the spec and the cool rainy day listen for me. I am in the middle of 1966 Spellbinder.

    CS has a funny way of expressing himself: never heard Rodrigo described like this (16:34 to 17:00) before :). I like what I've heard of Szabo lately. He played in "bands", but his music (or way of approaching melodies) is kinda European gyspy/folk like that has an "authenticity" appeal, to me anyway, a bit like the way Django could sound a lot more interesting and expressive than American guitar players of his day
