Using a CNC actually IS woodworking. It is the mind of the woodworker, or the craftsman, that creates the project. The CNC is just a tool that facilitates completion of the project. Now, I don't particularlyt like watching videos of things created by CNC, because I want to see things that I can do, not what someone else can do with tools that I can't afford. That's the most common gripe with CNC use in video projects. Aside from that, this is brilliant work. I love what you've made.
That's how I feel too. Wood is the medium, so definitionally anyone working with wood is a wood worker. I hear you about the CNC, I try to include all sorts of different mediums and techniques in my videos so that these video are still useful for non-CNC owners. I also really like working with a CNC because I can freely and easily share my designs with other people. Even some shallow CNC grooves for designs/patterns would look cool too. First time watching, love the content from a fellow T.O guy. Although I'm more GTA. 😃
There's this speaker company called Vandersteen that does linen wrapped speakers that have similar proportions to the Xbox. They used posts at the corners and wrap translucent black linen around them so you can see the inside of the speakers at the right angles. I think that would have been a nice halfway point between clear acrylic and the white linen covered sides.
It's beautiful to look at and it goes so well with the whole esthetic of your room. If I had to do mine, I'd have to go with some charred dark wood, some dark textile and warm colored metal accents, but the design you've made is going to look good in a lot of finishes.

Sweet build. Kind of reminds me of a Japanese paper lantern which makes me think it would look super cool if it glowed like one. Might be a neat future project to make one like that using some EL Panels.
Using a CNC machine is still woodworking, granted its not like running power tools with your hands but I'm sure it still takes a great deal of effort to take the measurements and think of how to design the parts and also to learn to use the computer software to transfer the designs you came up with to the computer and operate the CNC machine. Plus I'm handy and good at woodworking and building things and I think it would be fairly hard and time consuming to make pieces that small and precise with regular tools. So if you have a CNC machine that'll make the job go faster and make it easier and also help make the end product better you should absolutely use it, it makes sense to use all the tools you have at your disposal to do your work that's what they are there for!
Just to add to the "woodworking with a CNC isn't woodworking" debate: I do feel that a lot of instructional UA-camrs often use tools that are out of the grasp of the amateur, but it's nice that you do show plenty of ways to do other projects sans expensive equipment. It is hard though, to see something made with a CNC and think "oh...well I can't make that because I don't have 1k for a CNC, or a festool (insert specific item here)". As a jeweler who does a LOT of 3D printing and casting, I do understand how nice it is to have a machine that accomplishes the creation of a said design, but it's still frustrating to see a video where in order to make the end result, you have to mortgage your house (assuming you own a home). Regardless of all that, I absolutely love what you've created, and I may have to mod my series X now :D. Cheers!
It's super cool how Noctua make 5V fans, but there's one catch with that. USB charge support. When something's plugged in to a modern PC or an Xbox, it's always on, if it's a USB device that's not a human interface device (keyboard, mouse, webcam etc.). If it's just got power pins like a fan, it'll just be on all the time. If you look at a wiring diagram for the stock Xbox fan, if I were you, I'd splice the Noctua's fan wiring into the Xbox fan PWM so it ramps up when the top fan ramps up, and it's off when the console's off. Super cool build though! Love the dedication. 20 Minutes really makes a long build look like it takes no time to make, when I'm sure that's not true
Was about to say, I have the same fan plugged into the front of my system and it runs 24/7 unless you unplug it, splicing it in would be perfect for sure!
This looks absolutely amazing! I wish I could have that much expensive! Also I love that kiss method! Also in your image on patreon, I thought you did the branding with a laser cutter, but I’m so surprised you did it with the CNC router! Great video and project Zac
I don't see how anyone could argue that your not a woodworker if you use a specific machine over a bunch of other machines to achieve the same results. If you use a table saw, jointer, and sander to make your wood stuff, then your just using different equipment. Now, in relation to using hand tools, I would say that there is a great deal of skill gained in that process, and there is a wealth of enjoyment in gaining that skill. You'd be surprised at how many people love and use hand tools almost exclusively. But that is a hobby separate from mechanical design and construction, which is basically what you do with a CNC machine as well as a table saw. I love using hand tools. But at the same time, a CNC machine has such an attraction, I plan on one in the next few years.
In the future, if you use a flatbed scanner to scan in things--and a ruler/calibration square/etc.--that you need to get dead on in CAD, you can easily put the image in the background, scale the workspace by the ruler/calibration square/etc., then add in features where needed without having to break out your calipers. To be honest. If anyone would like to recreate this but don't have a CNC. A router comes a long way as well. The CNC is a nice and easy thing to be able to use when it comes to more precise measurements. And it's more than valid to be using one if you happen to have it available. Why the hell wouldn't you? If you're a purist and think that you shouldn't be using a CNC when wood working, then all good. Perfectly valid for you to do so. But using one is just as valid. Your way is your way, doesn't mean it is the same for someone else. That's part of the beauty in wood working.
Really like these videos, been watching them since I never knew about your channel until recently. Out of all your builds though, this just reminds me of some kind of Ikea lamp.

I just wanted to come back and let everyone know that the easy tutorial that you have linked does work, it just adds a few extra steps. when you go to his website, instead of the app link being there, is is a link to his discord. when you go there, you can quickly find the app and then download it and continue on with the tutorial. I did it and took me about 20 min to get done and now I am playing N64 games on my xbox. super sweet.
I love the builds totally awesome. I'd also like to advice that when using a saw machine try using a long piece of wood to guide your work through the cut instead of using your hands. Again Love your work.
Fun fact: Technology's definition is basically just saying a tool that aid's in creating/practical purposes. That includes but not limited to: Saws Chisels Wheels Gears Ropes Chairs My sanity and much much more.
The reason that people sometimes get a little treiggered about people making use of the CNC is that they don't realize that, for some people, the fun part is working with wood, carving it, looking at it, feeling it in their hands... For other people, the fun part is to see the project done in the end with the best outcome possible. In both cases, they are right! Guys! That is a HOBBY! That should be fun!
Nice build. It still wouldn't be able to play most of the XBox 360 racing games that I want to play, including all of the XBox 360 Project Gotham Racing and Forza Motorsport titles, but that's due to Microsoft's half-assed backwards compatibility support on XBox Series X and not any problems with your craftmanship.
I love the design! But it looks like the low height of the feet could actually choke the fan and hurt the airflow. Most console designs suffer from choking fans which is one of the reasons they are getting so loud under load. Some additional spacing to raise the console should prevent that. For example some rubber feet :)
I do recommend putting like a mesh screen or something better on the vent holes on top to avoid dust or debris from getting inside the console, but nonetheless kudos for the awesome job
Adding that intake fan may not actually be helping the temps by much. When it comes to cooling you can have positive pressure, where air is actively being pushed out of the case, and negative pressure, where air is actively being pulled into the case. Positive pressure results in less dust being built up in the case, but negative pressure results in lower tempuratures, so the Series S and X both use a single giant exhaust fan to get a lot of negative pressure. By adding that intake fan you are reducing the negative pressure, so it could end up actually causing the temps to be a little higher than if you just stuck with the original fan. I personally would have replaced the original fan with one that moves more air, as IIRC the fan used in the Series S and X uses the same connector as standard PC fans with PWM.
Awesome stuff ! I'm not a woodworking guy, but this is cool. An idea is to have a hybrid box that have both Xbox and ITX PC build for ultimate gaming station. On a side note, I opted for just using Moonlight on Xbox to stream emulated games from PC rather than the hassle to having it on the Xbox itself. Much more powerful for those PS3 games and of course Switch.
I think one of the reasons people criticize the CNC is that while these vidoes are entertaining, since most of us don't have a 10k CNC machine sitting at home, it's not able to be replicated.
iF I hAD a cNc i CouLD mAke ThiS tOO!! j/k, CNC'ing is an entirely different skillset. This tuned out great and matches you the rest of your setup soooo nicely. Walnut PS5 when?
It really is, and I'm having a blast learning how to do it haha. Thank you for the kind words. I havent started on the PS5 just yet, I'm still brainstorming some designs. But believe me it's on my radar.
CNC is a completely different skillset than woodworking. You create the piece on the computer, the CNC creates the piece for you. So it's more a computer-skill than a crafting skill. But no, it's not woodworking in my opinion, wood is just a coincidence here. That doesn't necessarily make the CNC a bad thing, though. Just try to create your case without computer (not without tools), then you'll get the difference. But anyway, the case turned out really nice and skillful.
If you're only changing the outside for design, it really doesn't sound too fascinating to me, but upgrading the systems GPU/CPU insides would've made it more interesting giving earning it's name to become a Xbox One Z.
Cool project, but I'm not sure I love the linen. I appreciate that you wanted something a bit more natural/rustic looking to go with the wood, but personally I really like wood contrasted against more modern materials. I think it would look sick to have it wrapped in a carbon fiber vinyl wrap or something similar. Either way you did a really great job with the walnut and it's a huge improvement over the original look.
@@allanshpeley4284 The linen just looks oddly unfinished, and blends in too much with the wall behind it. I mean, I'd prefer to just actually use real carbon fiber, but I didn't suggest it because it's so much more expensive and would require rebuilding too much.
i think the real thing when people get mad at wood workers when they label something hand-made when 98% of the work was done with a machine i once bought a cup holder for my desk that said hand-made when it got here it was 3d printed i was pissed because i own a 3d printer and couldve done that myself nice job on this looks good im surprised you didnt make covers for those desk speakers using that same material on the xbox
Question: Could you CNC a material like HDPE (cutting board material)? It's just such a versatile material, super strong, dense, flexible, and it looks great. Especially if you get the kind that's semi-transparent. You can make it glow with LED's, so it makes for a great diffusor. I'd like to see some projects done with HDPE, wood and brass, copper or aluminum. Just as an example, you could use HDPE in place of the fabric you used here on a similar future project.
Amazing custom console better than any I’ve ever seen but it does bother me that you didn’t add the sync button although you don’t particularly need it lol
CLEARLY not talking about the tool you're using, it's the process, using a CNC is a programming skill, not woodworking. I'm not claiming the whole project isn't a 'woodworking project' just that remarks of a CNC not being a joinery/carpentry skill is factual.

If you're a purist and think that you shouldn't be using a CNC when wood working, then all good. Perfectly valid for you to do so. But using one is just as valid. Your way is your way, doesn't mean it is the same for someone else. That's part of the beauty in wood working.
@@thehollowbox white glue and fabric work well together
Basically, you're calling their cases crap. Well done 👍🏻
Really like these videos, been watching them since I never knew about your channel until recently. Out of all your builds though, this just reminds me of some kind of Ikea lamp.
Zac, I love wood, although I’m not skilled to work with it as you are. Loved your furniture and wall set! You are quite the cabinetry level carpenter!
Beautiful craftsmanship. Won’t be surprised if Phil Spencer asked you to make him a custom one
Wish I had the setup to make this for my autistic son, he’d be amazed. Awesome work my man
How has zac not got a mil subs 😂
One day I hope :)
Zac Builds i would love to see you do a continuation of these overhauls of the looks and feels of the consoles by making the controllers match the desgin of the system, you're really good with these builds and would be a cool solid finish to the makes of the new shells to the console. just an idea lol
I like the idea of making a whole new case, but how do you plan to pair a new controller with it as that button is missing 🤔😂
Moded a Xbox and Xbox one I love this build great job.
Was not a fan initially, but it looks great with your own setup. Awesome work.
Very fitting that a video about a box is sponsored by a square
I love the builds totally awesome. I'd also like to advice that when using a saw machine try using a long piece of wood to guide your work through the cut instead of using your hands. Again Love your work.
I would’ve loved this even more if the sides were acrylic. I think a transparent one would look sickkk
Fun fact: Technology's definition is basically just saying a tool that aid's in creating/practical purposes. That includes but not limited to:
Saws
Chisels
Wheels
Gears
Ropes
Chairs

and much much more.
Yeah ngl you blew my mind when you palmed the x shell in the beginning before I knew it was a shell lmao
Not him throwing shots at that gorgeous PS5 ❤
My only gripe would be to put air vents in the side boards under the linen wrap to just take advantage of more airflow and cooling
Keep a Fire extinguisher Handy. It might get A bit Hotter than normal xbox. Wood/ Linen/ Spray glue. = fire. But a very enjoyable video
This looks awesome! Its really fun watching you make the new shells and things
I think a case heatsink that would make it smaller thinner will be ideal with a smaller fan.
just the fact you are so cool w sharing all your info and detail & making it open source ... AUTOMATIC SUB !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you market your everything console? I've been wanting to build one but your wood case designs are just so sleek.
You sound like another canadian youtuber. The samurai carpenter.
Great job, I’ll keep my Xbox default though. I’m a man of simplicity.
Thanks man! And fair enough, different strokes for different folks
100 brother! Keep up the good work!
Good job on the design and especially on putting all the right inside parts in!
@zac_Builds I know this is a scam
Im so proud this man says z like a normal human should
CNC is a completely different skillset than woodworking.
Absolutely stunning!
Thanks Oscar!
When I saw him holding the shell I thought it was just an Xbox I thought he was Superman
You gav me a heart attack at 6:44
Hopefully you have The original GAUNTLET ON THIS awesome build
Thank you for properly pronouncing the letter Z as a letter and not a word such as ( zed).
So beautiful but please make custom ps4 pro or ps5
Looking up how to build a food truck don’t know how I ended up here but now I wanna build a console 😂🔥🔥
If you're only changing the outside for design, it really doesn't sound too fascinating to me, but upgrading the systems GPU/CPU insides would've made it more interesting giving earning it's name to become a Xbox One Z.
Zac is the console designer we all needed
Cool project, but I'm not sure I love the linen. I appreciate that you wanted something a bit more natural/rustic looking to go with the wood, but personally I really like wood contrasted against more modern materials. I think it would look sick to have it wrapped in a carbon fiber vinyl wrap or something similar. Either way you did a really great job with the walnut and it's a huge improvement over the original look.
How is fake carbon fiber better than linen?
@@allanshpeley4284 The linen just looks oddly unfinished, and blends in too much with the wall behind it. I mean, I'd prefer to just actually use real carbon fiber, but I didn't suggest it because it's so much more expensive and would require rebuilding too much.
Your video might just inspire me to learn woodworking!
i think the real thing when people get mad at wood workers when they label something hand-made when 98% of the work was done with a machine i once bought a cup holder for my desk that said hand-made when it got here it was 3d printed i was pissed because i own a 3d printer and couldve done that myself nice job on this looks good im surprised you didnt make covers for those desk speakers using that same material on the xbox
Another guy said Japanese Lantern, the white plastic would suit that. Will be collecting some white cutting boards from the dollar store.
Amazing custom console better than any I’ve ever seen but it does bother me that you didn’t add the sync button although you don’t particularly need it lol
Cool build it looks very clean
Thanks!
CLEARLY not talking about the tool you're using, it's the process, using a CNC is a programming skill, not woodworking. I'm not claiming the whole project isn't a 'woodworking project' just that remarks of a CNC not being a joinery/carpentry skill is factual.
