I can't believe it's been 20 years since this masterpiece came out luckily there is emulator called PCSX2 that allows everyone and me to play games in 1080p or 4K
Ya im a huge fan of emulation and pushed PCX2 pretty hard on my 980ti and 1440p monitor back in the day. But, i just picked up a Fat ps2 from the thrift store (with the intention of selling it) and im telling you there is some magic to those blurry, smeary, fuzzy, ps2 graphics on a 4:3 monitor or crt. Not to mention just seeing the console and using the official ps2 controller. Its like going back in time. Im gonna load all the iso's on a micro sd card so i don't burn out its optical drive and party like its 2000 on original hardware. It was cool to take it all apart and service it too. Plus PCSX2 is missing some effects and cant play everything 100% accurate. I used to not care and play with any old controller when using the emu but its just not the same.
@@rosevillereaper9230 also, some games still run terribly or have terrible bugs in emulator, its a reason to go and pick a real one, because real hardware ps2 hasnt been emulated to perfection yet, but we are really close.
To be fair the upgrade from psx to Ps2 was one of the most life changing experiences I had in video games. Ps2 to ps3 was less apparent. And ps3 to ps4 is almost the same but with few extra details like better draw distances, better fps and more detailed textures or anti aliasing. Video game technology is advancing slower and slower. Just check how crazy changes were from 1990 Sega genesis period to 2000 dreamcast. And now 2010 ps3 to 2020 ps4.
Rendering in huge worlds is also a constraint. The PS5 is supposed to have a 4x better processor than PS4, and a SSD built in so hopefully PS5 should perform.
Kyle Hayes why would rendering a larger world been an issue? If we talk mostly non dynamic geometry that has not been a scaling issue really the last 10 years or so. (yes of course an SDD will allow to stream in more quicker but my questions is more related to the “render” and CPU statement)
@@litjellyfish Rendering or image synthesis is the automatic process of generating a photorealistic or non-photorealistic image from a 2D or 3D model (or models in what collectively could be called a scene file) by means of computer programs. Also, the results of displaying such a model can be called a render. you ever play a game like dayz? To be fair it's a 10 year old game.
Kyle Hayes I think you miss understood me. I did not ask what a render is. I asked why you saw rendering a huge world a constraint. I then followed by explaining why I found the statement questionable. My statement is that for huge worlds there is plenty good systems in software and hardware already. Occlusion culling and distance based level of detail. So pushing those polygon data sets around for pure rendering is not really a big problem world based. It’s like manage those data set in memory and also to update the dynamic stuff in it. And for this more memory, quicker storage and more powerful CPU is great. But that is just to handle and update the huge worlds. It’s separated more or less totally from the actually render pipeline Hope i am more clear how :)
Ps2 was technically flawed, but Sony did almost everything else right, the hype, the games, the backwards compatibility. It's just my opinion, but ps3 and 4 can't hold to ps1 and 2.
The ultimate sony product is a backwards compatible FAT PS3 that's been case modded, NEC capacitors replaced, 1tb SSD installed, and delidded to run cooler
@@vgrepairs You do realize I'm talking about the systems as they were back in their day, right? It's like if someone said, "NES was a great system" and you go, "na-ah, my PC can play NES games and more!" It's pretty awkward that I even have to explain this, but that's internet for you.
The last great gaming generation ( so far ). Hopefully 9th gen returns to this former glory. Dreamcast will always be my fav 6th gen console ( PS2 was great just not as Innovative ).
Meh... I still think it was largely over-hyped and most people bought into the hype like from this video with claims like "Emotion Engine" and "Real-life characters." In reality, the Dreamcast, which came out two years prior had even better graphics in ways as it didn't have to rely on interpolation techniques to render (so it was much clearer/more stable looking). The Dreamcast was also easier to program for, included a modem for online play, had 4 controller slots with visual memory units, had tons of great launch titles, and cost significantly less than the PS2 at launch. The DVD-playback and PS1 backwards compatibility were the two main reasons I and many others still got a PS2 initially but technologically and even games-wise, I would rate PS2 behind the Dreamcast, GameCube, and Xbox. For a laugh watch this old video from the time: "Dreamcast VS PS2 funny faceoff"
@@JonBlack413 I think it just depends on your preference of games. I spent more time on Phantasy Star Online than any other game in my life - by far. I also thoroughly enjoyed Shenmue, Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, Jet Set Radio, a bunch of great fighting games, and many others on the Dreamcast and just overall spent a lot more time with the Dreamcast but there were still a few games on PS2 I enjoyed too obviously. The PS2 was still a great system and I'm glad I bought it but in my opinion it definitely wasn't the best of that generation.
tbh i really wanna know if there's any game which does that, like physics simulations can run at whatever you want it but actually rendering hundreds of fps when you don't need to waste those resources sounds... dumb
I remember playing GTA 3 on the PS2 at a friend's house for the first time. It was the most amazing thing I've ever seen! I don't think I was impressed much after that until I played Oblivion on PC. That was the next leap in graphics and physics later released on Xbox 360 and PS3. The current gen I dont think has impressed me any in terms of graphics. Its basically the same as last gen but better resolution, framerates, more particles and draw distance. Hopefully the PS5 and Xbox will bring that wow factor again later this year!!!🤗🤗🤗🤗
@@LuciferSerpentking what!? Ps5 or XboxSX difference will be huge.. don't forget this new next generation hardware has Ryzen Zen 2 Cpu which is still kicking Intel's ass and Suffering in GPU department only because of AMD's shitty GPU drivers but GPU drivers is not a big issue for console since its upto Console manufacturers to fully utilize PS5 and Xbox Series X gpu power.
2002 was when I got really into gaming and I was already a full grown adult. This era captivated me more than the gens before it when I was a kid. Still have a PS2 and Xbox though they aren’t the original ones I bought.
The ps2 was released in 2000 and this video is from 1999, that is, a year before the launch they were already talking a lot about the console, showing the capabilities of it and etc., however nowadays there are only MONTHS left for the launch of the ps5 , and nothing is shown, but nowadays obviously there are many more means of dissemination and such, I think this at least strange, Sony should have already revealed much more.
I remember the old myth about PS2 back in the early 2000s that Iraq ordered thousands of PS2 system to be used as clusters of supercomputer for missile guided systems. Good times tho 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
I was reading an interview about the scientist guy that took a few hundred or a thousand PS3 and created a supercomputer and he said back in the day he tried to do the same with the PS2 since it ran Linux like the PS3(before it was taken out) but there was an architecture problem and they could never make a supercomputer out of the PS2. If Iraq War had not happened Saddam should have bought a few thousand PS3 and made a supercomputer for the scud missiles.
7:12 ...sounds as if they where planning for PC card support and it initially was going to work off from that for some things. Wonder how that looked like in the prototype casing.

I went from ps1 and n64 to Dreamcast and swore nothing will ever beat that. Until MGS 2 was released! We will never see generational jumps like my generation did ever again!
Mango Steel true. Now it’s more slow progression. Still it’s not fair. In some ways there is progression but not as huge. I would say a lot of AI image analysis etc really has taken leaps the last 10 years.
Not necessarily. The growth is not proportional and it's getting smaller and smaller in every generation. Next gen we might not even get an upgrade in resolution. The largest generation leap came from 16 bits (Snes/Genesis ) to 32/64 (PS1/N64)... then to (PS2/GC)... Still, nothing was as major as Super Mario World to Super Mario 64 for example... A Link to the Past to Ocarina of time.. we will never see this leap again. The leap from PS3 to PS4 was the smallest we've ever had and it probably will be even smaller to PS5.
Thiago Vidal you’re right I was thinking we will get a breakthrough in the next 20 years. Graphene has always been promised as the next gen material and if we can get it too production it’s might create the leaps in power I’m hoping for.
@@RoughRiders55 But also, let's not ignore the potential of raytracing. commonplace in pre -rendered CGI for decades, only now became possible in real time, although limited, it can be what the industry needs in order to make this leap more visible in the next 2 generations, as the system get's more accurate. At least we have one exciting new feature to look forward to for next gen. This can make a big difference... perhaps higher than PS3 to PS4 if done right.
Tbh just llok at this: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_2_technical_specifications The basics of the hardware is nothing compared to what we know as GPU and CPU (some were embraced and is standardized now but other stuff just isn't practicable with a pc use case)
If the world population come to 12-14 billion now, maybe the next next generation of gaming console can finally beat the record of PS2 in marketing sale. But right now it will be unbeatable

uncomparable, ps2 was all about clever techniques and not horsepower. today's architectures is just power and let the developer/the one using it put it to work. You can't actually compare the hardware *especially* the gpu which both are so alike

Looks like kaz just ate giant enemy crab! 😂
You beat me to it 😂
😂😂😂😂 excellent comment
To be fair the upgrade from psx to Ps2 was one of the most life changing experiences I had in video games. Ps2 to ps3 was less apparent. And ps3 to ps4 is almost the same but with few extra details like better draw distances, better fps and more detailed textures or anti aliasing. Video game technology is advancing slower and slower. Just check how crazy changes were from 1990 Sega genesis period to 2000 dreamcast. And now 2010 ps3 to 2020 ps4.
The Grabisoft I would not say slower but less noticeable. It’s more upscaling now than new features.
It’s separated more or less totally from the actually render pipeline
Hope i am more clear how :)
Kaz Hirai went from a chunky Yakuza boss to a japanese salary man in the space of 10 years.
Yup. I miss that he is gone. Always loved Kaz.
PlayStation always manages to build extreme hype for their next generation console. I’m so pumped about PS5!
The PS3 WAS A PS1 AND PS2!! Epic fail!
@@vgrepairs You do realize I'm talking about the systems as they were back in their day, right? It's like if someone said, "NES was a great system" and you go, "na-ah, my PC can play NES games and more!" It's pretty awkward that I even have to explain this, but that's internet for you.

the last of us is ps3 graphics, this is not
The best video game console ever created.
@@Bristecom better technology: Agreed
Better Games: 😕 Not even close.

I remember in 2001 all of my friend is excitedly to discuss the outstanding graphic differences between ps1 and ps2
That fat Japanese guy was actually Kaz Hirai. Damn, I couldn't believe my eyes for a second.

Why should they?
i think somethings coming this month
PS2 released on March 2000 in Japan and at the end of the year in the USA. This video is from late 1999 so of course they will show a lot of stuff.
I remember the old myth about PS2 back in the early 2000s that Iraq ordered thousands of PS2 system to be used as clusters of supercomputer for missile guided systems. Good times tho 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
You could command an invincible army of jaggies with a cluster like that
US propaganda against Iraq they eventually killed him for having weapons of mass destruction of which there is no proof and it is a proven lie
I was doubtful about that rumor, but the US government DID buy thousands ps3's for data clusters
Thank you Sony for the amazing childhood. Can't wait to pick up a PS5 this year!
Always loved my Playstations! From 1 to 4 👍👍👍👍

Hello ,Father of Playstation and Hirai San!!
It’s amazing the leap of power we had in 20 years. Imagine the next 20 years it’s going to be fantastic
