Now I feel sad.
Fuck Sony
@@hitcism1043 more like fuck you. It's not Sony's fault for killing Sega.
Minion_Bazz 2 It was Sega’s bad decisions with the Sega CD, 32X, and Saturn. The Dreamcast never stood a chance especially with all of the hype for the PlayStation 2.
@@gedaman I agree. Making the Sega CD and 32X was unecessary, especially when the Sega Saturn was already coming out soon. Because the Sega Saturn surprisingly came out sooner and being difficult to develop for, most gaming companies refused to make games for the Saturn. The Dreamcast had a good run in the beginning, but because the PS1 was already popular, many people bought the PS2, which decreased the sales of the Dreamcast massively. But you're right. The mistakes Sega made cost them in the long run.
Alas what could've been had we've lived in a world where Sega had won an alternate history if you will, I often think what the world would be like if Sega were still around in the hardware business today, it would be them enjoying the launch of the third or the fourth Dreamcast, and imagine it having specs that far surpass the upcoming PS5 and Xbox Series X. One can still Dream. Perhaps one day when one of the current big three fails and has a fate similar to the Dreamcast maybe then Sega will come back to rightfully take the console throne.
I was a PlayStation bloke, but then I took a Dreamcast to the heart…
I feel you. Dreamcast has a special place in my heart. I still own the one I begged my parents to get me if I advanced a year in public school in half the time. Fucking school grades were on point.
Sorry to hear that

I actually remember watching this back in 1999 :S
Can't forget something like that! ^_^
Salman Siddiqui I remember watching this a year ago. Because i was I born in 2001 ):
Incredibly honest of Iramajiri to even concede that the PS2 would have "a little bit better graphics". That might work in Japan, but in Western markets that kind of soundbite can do damage.
I remember Sega Europe's Mark Hartley [then Marketing Manager and Head of PR] remarking at the CEX lock-in event when they got the first PS2 consoles in from Japan, that the Ridge Racer launch game (was it Ridge Racer 5?) still had jaggies on the track where diagonal lines were concerned. He was checking out the competition, and felt relieved Dreamcast didn't have as much to worry about in terms of better graphics from PS2, than had first been feared. Before it launched, everyone did feel the PS2 was gonna be, the second coming basically, XD. In the end it was just a cheap DVD player that could still play uprez-ed PSOne games while you waited for the first decent PS2 games to arrive - and the good games didn't really arrive until Devil May Cry in mid 2001 - months after Dreamcast was already announced as discontinued.
Fantastic video! Really takes me back to the millennium, my lil brother picked up a dreamcast, I held out for the PlayStation 2.
Man what a time to be a gamer!! Thank you for uploading this gem of gaming history!!
Wow, the graphics are so rad
I got torn apart for that comment when I went back to school after it aired. #rad #savage 😂😂

I remember my girlfriend in high school wanted a Dreamcast for her, I was more expectant for the PlayStation 2.
No wonder she left you
@@rossthesauceboss I bet she's playing Dreamcast with her now loving husband and 2 kids. Having a blast in Power Stone 2 four player action. I wish her well.
We all know how this sad story unfolded... it was inevitable for the Dreamcast to fail, the PS2 was successful before it was even launched thanks to the unstoppable entity which was the original PlayStation. The media frenzy and mass hysteria surrounding the lead up to the PS2's release was damn real and unbelievable - I was young back then, but it felt like as if the new millennium was bringing about new & strange technology which was so far advanced, and being the successor to the original PlayStation...my god. But this was way back in the day when the Japanese ruled the video game industry, and then Microsoft stepped in with the Xbox...
Marketing too. PSM's magazine spread the word about it like wildfire. Dreamcast's official magazine was boring. Dreamcast's magazine did not reflect the games' quirkyness at all.
*Best NewsRound report EVER!!!!!* ⭐️
Too true! ^_^.
I wish SEGA stayed in the console business if they have survived, and I really want to see more of this stuff recorded back in the day and how things were of the 6th generation
Good that the SEGA boss was reqlly honest about PS2 vs Dreamcast.
Wow so Nintendo themselves said what became the GameCube would play dvds. Wonder what happened.
The Panasonic Q happened, ^_^.

Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive 2 look great on Dreamcast. I'm sure if it was around one more year, it would have Virtua Fighter 4 too!
Virtual Fighter 4 was both critically acclaimed, and did fantastic sales numbers upon release on PS2. I totally expected it to steal Tekken's crown from all the PlayStation fans...except things just went silent until VF5 on PS3/Xbox360...and where is VF6...? Why are there StreetFighter X Tekken games, and not the two main competitors from the era pitted against one another? A Tekken Vs Virtua Fighter game would be immense! ^_^. Fighters Megamix on steroids, =). I did finally pick up VF4 on PS2, and was like - wait - how can I jump? Lol. XD. I still need to adapt to VF4. I realise now you can still do jumping attacks, just not jump for no reason.

My opinion Sega should fight on with the Dreamcast. On the long run they could be a winner. Imagine the Yakuza games where Dreamcast only games......for some reason all Dreamcast gamers saying the same thing “Dreamcast is the best console ever made “
@Joshi Oyabun they wouldn't of won,but could of been competitive
SEGA was losing so much money, pouring it into the Dreamcast marketing, but you'd never know that it could draw more polygons and nicer features because they never told anyone outside of the company!
OLD TECHNOLOGY
Old but gold
A pitty the DC couldn't stand the PS2 launch and threw the towel so early
I agree. I remember Dreamcast was doing incredibly well in the US when PS2 launched. The end did come rather suddenly in March 2001, and Xbox and Gamecube wouldn't compete with PS2 until 2002...so PS2 really had the market to itself for a while, for a great headstart. Dreamcast still had a good bunch of releases for 2001...and even game-specific Bleemcast discs finally got released. Yet the announcement of Sega going third party, took the wind out of DC's sales that year, =S.
everybody I knew back then wouldn't even touch the dreamcast until after the PS2 came out - the hype was so huge everybody assumed it was gonna blow the games on the dreamcast out of the water - which it didn't, but the damage was done. That, and it played DVDs - which was a big deal back then. I bought mine at the US launch and everybody who came over and tried it said it was great, but they all still waited.
@@bradybrapples I know right? They all waited to see if it would be another Mega CD, 32X, or Saturn. =S. That said, when I had my Dreamcast as a student, in a flat next door to the landlord - the landlord's kids would come into the flat and play Sonic Adventure - it was cool, I said they could - and it was cool to see such enthusiam for Sonic from a whole new generation, ^_^. Only problem was I put some spray paint cans below the dart board, and the kids tried playing darts too, punctured a can, and I came home to find the landlord on his hands and knees scrubbing gold spray paint off the carpet and apologising profusely, XD. Lol.

Probably not, I am sure he also got crazy taxi, power stone 1 and 2 and a load of other games then ultimately got a Ps2 like i got a Ps2 eventually. He also had a good 2 years of his (largely ignorant) friends going wow, and even then until around 2002 nothing on the Ps2 looked better than the Dreamcast overall. Basically at 199 quid I am sure he got his monies worth and you're being a negative nancy or a fanboy.
@@grimmfandango832 heheheh PS2 can run games that Dreamcast could just dream of to handle
@@itzelvenmage7434 WDYM?
@@grimmfandango832 Can't agree. There wasn't a game like Klonoa 2 Lunatea's Veil on Dreamcast which came out in 2001 and FFX, MGS2 and SH2 looked better than anything on Dreamcast and they released in late 2001 as well.
It depends on where you lived. UK/Europe always got games so late due to localization issues.
@@TheGoldenPS1 Remember we're taking mid 1998 tech vs 2001 and it was 200 pounds. The DC was just let down by its cpu, also @elvenmage it's a cpu issue that with have made some geometric effects difficult, but those genes would have ran if scaled back a little. After all the ps2 was running games that the xbox had, and tech gap was greatest. The ps2 just got a boost because it was the lead development console (for various reasons)

Wow, great upload !
And like clockwork, Sony over hypes their upcoming 'super computer's with one of the worst launch period libraries of all time. I'll always hate them for heavily contributing to Sega's death.
I love Sega, my first console was a Master System. But it is not Sony's fault that Sega didn't do better PR... They made crucial mistakes, although they already had the future in their products.
Where can I find more stuff like this?
Google it
New consoles will never match the hype and festivities that these consoles brought when they launched. PS4 generation and onwards just felt like going through the motions. You'll buy one eventually to play games but you won't really care that much... It's sad.
@TBrizzle01 depends who u ask.I was at every system launch and got excited for games like god of war, metal gear solid,ff and many others.now granted the Xbox never had excitement like dreamcast.its all on the person
If companies were allowed to freely develop for sega (even Capcom devs later admitted re:cv was meant to be named re4, but they couldn't because other companies wanted "exclusivity" to the "main" series for marketing reasons), we would probably seem more games and comparable ports.
I knew that CV was the real RE4

To be fair, it had good third party support (Tomb Raider and Resident Evil came back, even if EA was missing) - the problem was they gave up the ghost just as PS2 was launching, so the writing was on the wall, and third parties could see it was not going to be the future. The PS2 launched in the UK in November 2000 in very limited numbers only available via a controversial reservation scheme, with many people not able to obtain their PS2 consoles until Q1 2001 - which is exactly when Sega announced it was going third party. This would be like The Xbox 360 launching a year before PS3, then giving up one month after the PS3 launch, XD, despite having gained so much market share. Dreamcast was the best selling console in the US at the time of its demise - look it up - more consoles sold than PS2 that year. It just came down to how many years of losses Sega could sustain, and a decision by their CEO to take the company in a new direction. If you were a third party, you knew you needed to support PS2 and not Dreamcast. PS2 would go on to have the market all to itself, as Xbox and Nintendo didn't join the console wars until 2002. It was the alignment of stars for PS2 - a huge PSOne base looking for their next-gen console, Dreamcast giving up the fight just as you launch, and even producing Sega PS2 games, and Nintendo's Gamecube and Microsoft's Xbox more than a year away - Sony couldn't have asked for better market conditions. There were very few good PS2 games at launch. We had to wait for Devil May Cry and Onimusha in the Summer of 2001 before the games started picking up - but nobody cared. We were playing upscaled PSOne games that looked better than ever on PS2, and I rented a tonne of DVDs, which was exciting to do at the time, as the quality was much better than VHS, XD, and it felt like the PS2 was "convergence" as it could play CDs, DVDs, and Games, =). Not that I ever used it as a CD player mind, ^_^ - it was simply my, and many other people's, first ever DVD player, =).
Didn't the original Metal Gear Solid get the Bleemcast treatment for Dreamcast at least? It was so exciting to think Dreamcast may have been backwards compatible with PSOne...

Man Sega should have released the Dreamcast in 1997 instead of making The Saturn they should have focused on the sega cd instead
tech wasn't there yet i guess.
The Sega CD was old ass tech and you needed a Genesis to play the terrible FMV games on it. PS1 would've eaten it's lunch just the same as it did the Saturn. No matter what Sega was ALWAYS doomed going up against Sony! The fools at Sega of Japan should've listened to Tom Kalinski and worked with Sony on a new system together!
@@G18999 More people already had the Genesis since it was the cheaper system compared to the SNES. It's the CD add on that was hundreds of dollars. It should have been it's own system. If they had some kind of deal with Sony or Panasonic or something, they could have sold them in higher production. Not saying that would drop the price, but it would be easier to advertise in other stores and would be playable from the get go, no add on required, no extra plugs.
@@G18999 I agree Tom had the right idea. By 1996, I was still playing a Genesis. I didn't get the CD or 32X.

You do know that Dreamcast can get away with image quality and PS2 can get away with physics, polygons, and other stuff. Yes, it could produce 14-16 million polygons a second at a smooth framerate if developed correctly. That's what the PS2 could have done.

ahhh 1999 I was 24 at the time and me and my work mate we're driving to Game. He was trying to convince me to buy a Dreamcast so we could play games together online. I bort the n64 in the end. I convinced him to wait for the playstation 2 because of the dvd technology, and we did.😵 though in retrospect, perhaps I should have bort the Dreamcast. I never did know what it was like for online gaming😞
Well, the internet browser and Dreamcast Arena site were decent - but you'd have had to wait until the Easter after Christmas for the first online game - ChuChu Rocket - a basic 2D puzzler. That's all I ever played online on Dreamcast, and was a bit of a let down. Later good online releases were Quake III Arena and Phantasy Star Online. I was all about Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi though - those were the fun Dreamcast titles, even if they were offline. The latter came to PS2, the former went to Xbox as Jet Set Radio Future (or Jet Grind Radio Future - depending where in the world you live) - which will also work on an X360 so I hear.
+Digital Abandonment Don't think too much about it. Dreamcast was dead on arrival anyways. Sega made two add-ons for the Mega Drive/Genesis with short lifespans. 32x was released the same time the Saturn was released in Japan. By the time the Saturn was released outside of Japan, 32x was discontinued and swept under the rug. And later, the Saturn was discontinued. People and retailers had more confidence on the Playstation brand than Sega. Don't feel bad for buying the PS2. It was a cheap DVD player and was backwards compatible.

PS2 also had online........lol

Sega dreamcast vs Ps2
Even Sega didn't believe in itself, the PlayStation 2 does indeed have better graphics and a DVD drive... (Not including a DVD drive was its largest failure, with it, it could have kicked Sony all around the room)
Including a DVD drive would've been an even bigger failure. Increasing manufacturing costs and DVD Forum fees would jack up the price of the Dreamcast (and keeping the price low would only hurt Sega even more).
The only way the other 3 consoles could compete would be to have the DVD player. At the time that shit was killer and it made the console an all in one device. People will gladly hand out the money if it can handle all non cable functions. GameCube and Xbox not having an immediate way to play movies I think also lost them big time.
@@mr.goodboi2780
The GameCube including them would've cost them a lot more. DVD Forum fees would've driven up the manufacturing costs significantly, and they always profit on consoles. Nintendo would've priced the GameCube at more than double, and a lot of people would've ignored it for the much cheaper PS2 or Xbox. Reducing the price of the GameCube to match the competition would've cost Nintendo a bundle on hardware, and the Wii, Wii U, and Switch wouldn't even have existed. The only reason Sony and Microsoft easily handled the hardware losses was because their individual pockets were a lot deeper than Nintendo's and Sega's combined (and since Sony owned the DVD Forum, paying royalties was the least of their problems). Nintendo still profited big time on the GameCube. They didn't lose money until the early 2010s, with the launch of the 3DS (at its initial $250 price tag) and Wii U (we know about that). Their first (and biggest) loss in over *three* decades.
Sega already lost bundles after the disastrous North American launch of the Saturn and the poor performance of the 32X, and the Dreamcast, their last hope of a comeback, came up short due to the competition rising. Adding a DVD player to the Dreamcast would've bankrupted Sega for good.
@@GamingDelight "The Wii, Wii U and Switch never would have existed"
Bullshit. Nintendo could've taken a hit on GameCube and came back swinging with Wii. They technically already did. GameCube did not sell well to begin with at 21 mullion units. Adding a DVD player would have have helped them regardless of spending. DVDs were all the rage in the early 00's and added more value and would have gave the other two consoles an edge. The only reason PS2 sold as well as it did was because it had backwards compatibility and DVD playing. Graphics sure, but accessibility is what made it blow up. GameCube would have sold a lot better had it N64 backwards compatibility as well. Nintendo chickened out on both, and using those mini discs instead on DVDs when everyone needed a lot of storage for games cost them many ports that could have sold more consoles. GTA and shit could have been on it had it had DVD technology like PS2.
@@mr.goodboi2780
Sony and Microsoft's pockets are deeper than Nintendo's. (read Service Games: The Rise and Fall of Sega) They can handle the losses on hardware far more than Nintendo and Sega ever could. Besides, by the time the GameCube launched in 2001, *standalone DVD players were coming down in price, so expensive DVD playback for the GameCube was pointless.*
Adding backwards compatibility with N64 cartridges to a disc-based console would've driven up the GameCube's manufacturing cost and retail price even further. The Game Boy Player (an accessory that plays Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance games on the GameCube) was an inexpensive and popular way to make up for it.
And mini discs were a way of decreasing illegal copying, which would've skewered Nintendo's profits on software. Again, Sony and Microsoft had pockets deep enough to handle years' worth of losses over piracy. Sega's Dreamcast had easily pirated software, which was a factor in their departure in the hardware business. Nintendo couldn't afford to find a way to make CD or DVD discs completely piracy-proof without consumers finding a way around it like what happened with the original PlayStation.
The key phrase here is *Sony and Microsoft each have deeper pockets than Nintendo and Sega combined.*
Sega lost a lot of money on Saturn and Dreamcast hardware (and even more so because of the Saturn's disastrous North American launch) and that's why they're only making games now. Nintendo wasn't going to make the same mistakes their old rival made.
DVD playback didn't help the original Xbox either (especially since it was released around the same time as the GameCube, *when standalone DVD players were getting cheaper*). It just *barely* beat the GameCube by three million units. But Microsoft lost a lot more money on hardware than Nintendo did.
Besides, Nintendo wasn't competing with Sony or Microsoft. They had their own market.
I come from the future ps4 came out sega didnt survive...a new system named xbox emerged....and donald trump is our president of the u.s.

You know I believe Microsoft secretly wanted the Dreamcast to fail so they can start their own console. It was like they planned the Dreamcast failing all along. Sad how big business is like that. Sega is so much better than Microsoft, and it sucks that Sega got fooled into using a Microsoft OS all those years ago.
Paved the way for Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future, and Xbox Shenmue II though, right?
ajmetz82 those were all slated for the dreamcast but then they jumped ship because the dreamcast was sinking
fireheartis1 I highly doubt that. There's a Microsoft Windows CE on the Dreamcast console. Sony wanted Dreamcast to fail. Sony watched the Saturn failed because it was difficult to program for. The Saturn lived a little longer than Dreamcast but had EA Sports and GT Interactive like Duke Nukem 3D. They also had Psygnosis in UK because the ps1 exclusive deal made by Sony was only for North America and not Europe. Castlevania Symphony of the Night also saw release on Saturn but in Japan only under title Dracula X Nocturne of the Moon.
fireheartis1
Microsoft only took a stab into gaming because they knew Sony would crush Sega's Dreamcast. They are the new Sega and Xbox is the replacement of the Dreamcast. the control pad is similar to the Dreamcast controller. it has 2 memory card slots on the control pad just Dreamcast controller pad. Unlike the Dreamcast controller which only has 1 analog stick. Xbox control pad has 2. Xbox plays movies. Dreamcast doesn't. Microsoft saw the success of Sega's Seganet. Xbox Live is based on Sega net.

@@FIINKS your a dumbass the PS1 sucked I agree with everything that person said that’s why I am buying the marvel vs CAPCOM arcade 1 up for revenge playing the way they should of played PS2 should of been the first console but Sony couldn’t wait they just had to sell a weak console
@@emadstarns291 I responded to the first sentence which is beyond ignorant. I don't care or know about the rest hence why I didn't even mention it. The dreamcast is the technically superior console but that don't mean shit the ps1 still won and ps2 won against the Xbox which was also technically a better system. No need to get salty that Sony won lol facts are facts with inferior tech and this fighting game seems pretty niche and Nintendo have smash bros so who cares?
@@FIINKS don’t buy the Xbox series X please Microsoft doesn’t need people who say someone else beat them your not a true gamer fan your more of a Sony fan you buy only what Sony makes you play only Sony games on the PS4 like knack infamous son your a boring person I own every console I’m loaded with thousands of games
Too bad Sega did not have enough money to continue the war. If it was Microsoft, Dreamcast would have been no.1. Ps2 graphic sucks. It was still interlaced. Same Games looked between on Dreamcast.
Bruh ps2 was better
and how is 480i a bad thing, the ps2 was designed with a crt in mind, and a crt did 480i natively. to be fair though, 480i can look bad on a modern lcd tv and the dreamcast could do vga output at 480p on so many games, its easier to count how many dont support it
@@windowsxpnt2347 480i is not bad, but PS2 also doesn't support hardware anti-aliasing. The PS2 games have more aliasing and blurry textures than Dreamcast and Xbox.
@@rubyxo8699 PS2 had better games but it was the weakest console of the generation.
Nothing compete with PC
Fuck off nerd
