  • Sometimes it feels like if we can be perfect enough, anxiety won't touch us. This could not be further from the truth...and continuing to hold on to perfectionistic tendencies can hold us back in our recovery from Hypothalamic Amenorrhea, Exercise Dependence, or Overtraining Syndrome. Learn why trying to be perfect at things is a terrible coping mechanism, how perfectionism hides in our behaviors, and why it's important to self-monitor to know if your world is getting smaller and smaller. Spoiler alert: if you're obsessed with being perfect, you're probably also being a mega b*tch!!

I didn't realize I said some of these things until you mentioned them in this video, particularly about "locking down" my training. In the moment, I just saw that as a necessary thing to do - now I see it was self punishment. The funny thing is, the tighter I held to my rules and goals, the harder it was to make progress. And definitely relate to wanting to be the natural at something, and not participating for fear of not living up to expectations. Thanks for your insight

These may be a bit peripheral but worth mentioning, there were two things I found extremely helpful in changing destructive patterns. One was to quiet the noise around me,ie social média,tv,small talk etc.I traded those for silence(so scary ),violin music, and soothing ambience videos. The other was to replace the rituals of perfectionism with soothing ones as cheese ball as it sounds.Candles at night, reading a good book before bed, baking for seniors ,and even just a good deep breath and stretch ,all of it helped my mindset transition to a gentler place!

Hi Jill, I have recently found your channel and am watching all your videos right from the beginning until now. They are so informative, helpful and inspiring! I've known I have HA for a while now, but have been in denial for ages. I'm finally feeling more equipped and resilient to tackle this head on and am finding your videos super helpful, particularly regarding self compassion and finding my new identity. You're like my virtual cheerleader! Thank you :)
