The ADHD-Overexercise Connection (Type A Women, You Need To See This)

  • Some of us are using exercise to compensate for feelings of inadequacy, to combat perceived flaws, as a way to drown out the noise of life, and even as a way to calm down and focus. Is it possible that a genetic neurodiversity might be triggering all of this? I've invited Dr. Thomas Puleo, a pediatrician who specializes in ADHD in adolescents, to dig into this topic. Fewer than 20% of adults with ADHD are actually diagnosed and even those who were diagnosed in childhood are likely to back off treatment and management as adults. We know that poor management of our compensatory behaviors can lead to exercise abuse in this community. So, let's get to the bottom of this!

Wow, thank you Jill and your brother Thomas for highlighting this link! Similarly, I have used all of these compensatory behaviors for my OCD (I was diagnosed at 15, not even sure if it was correct or not but anyway). I related so much to using exercise to compensate for feelings of overwhelm and being out of control, as well as STRAVA!! Oh my gosh, what an addiction that is, 'Need to log something on Strava today' I seriously can't think of anything that is honestly more meaningless, but it acts as a purpose of some sort when you're feeling out of control! Very important stuff, thank you :)

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! And of course, I am happy that we were able to provide valuable information to you. You can be sure that you are not alone in your feelings...there are so many people that are in the same situation. That's why we all need to continue to raise awareness and keep talking!

This was super helpful. My doc and I are now investigating ADHD. Have literally used excercise as a release since I was old enough to have a gym membership. True story, had my first burnout at age 16

@@jillcolangelopsych my doctor assessed and diagnosed me with ADHD. I have been on Vyvanse for about 3 weeks. Game changer. I can literally permit myself to not workout to death! I am overtraining/HA recovered beyond superficial level. Full transparency, before this post on was well on my way to HA overtraining round 2. No off switch! Had my first physical burnout at age 14. Never ever did I connect the dots. Thank you and your brother !

I had a hunch there was a relationship here. I am also ADHD and have a tendency to abuse exercise. I honestly abuse anything "fun". I use it all up until the dopamine isn't hitting anymore 😂

So relatable. I have been stuck in a constant cycle of increasing training volume as I need more and more for the same relief until I don't get the hit anymore, then I crash and burn and then restart when my brain craves the stimulation again. I keep telling everyone I'm quitting for good to get out of the toxic relationship I have with exercise but then my brain can't handle it and I do the shameful walk back 🙈

@eimearrosenicholl3734 well, take it from me, it's better to learn modern sooner than later. I ran myself down with 7 years of restrictive dieting and excessive exercise. I'm currently recovering from overtraining syndrome. I got some metabolic damage, weakened immune system, anemia, infertility (hopefully that's temporary), lots of injuries, etc. I had been feeling run down for a while but I kept pushing through until my body forced me to back off. Now instead of training 6 days a week for over 2 hours, I only do 3 days for an hour and do low intensity stuff every other day, like walking or light jogs

Extremely relatable. ..substance abuse(now sober), gaming-addiction, por*-addiction, shopping-addiction and 20 yrs of compulsive training. My life is still a mess 🙄 I was best in class up until college, then all went south. Never got a degree. I now live on welfare, due to a hard life. (Live in the eu)
But despite all that, I have always eaten super healthy and are in VERY good physical shape. People don't understand that contradiction.
I was dianosed with OCD at 10 or 11 and with ADD/ADHD at 40. 😂 The struggle is real..

Very good video with your Dr brother. Something I will definitely consider and look further into. I have never been diagnosed with ADHD but when I was younger it was not recognized and/or even tested for it. Again, much thanks Jill

You're welcome! Remember that symptoms of ADHD in adults can mimic many other concerns like depression, anxiety, OCD, and even hormonal disruption. Definitely consult a qualified doc to get more info!

Great episode. I've suspected this about myself. I definitely train to drown out the noise and calm myself. I hyperfocus on one thing and can't focus on other things sometimes. I'm now in my early 30s I find it slightly worse. Making careless mistakes and minor accidents even. I have never sought help and always felt it's "not that bad" & was afraid of bring judged ..since I'm not a kid. This gave me confidence to ask a professional. Thank you.

I am so happy to hear that this video inspires you to look into speaking with a doctor. As I have learned "Not that bad" is a great excuse for us to downplay and devalue ourselves further. Zero judgement to those who put their mental health first...no matter what!

I've done quite a few videos on amenorrhea recovery that does not have to do with fertility. The main concerns are: cognitive decline, heart disease, and osteoporosis due to a lack of estrogen, but there are more!

Also ADHD can make a child set parents up for failing more.
As a mother of a ADHD child I know that my child by no fault of his own.
Puts a mother under pressure. Its easy to for instanse critisise to mutch or Get mad or iritated.
and then do repetedly wrong things as a mother and get into a bad way of interacting in the familie who makes the symtoms worse.
A good way of explayning how a person with adhd feels instead of the words attention defisit and hyperaktivity is
to ask a person.»have you ever been ekstremly tired? After not sleeping for a long time you will feel extreem discomfort
trouble conentrating, maybe be irritated and to ceep from falling asleep UA-cam body can start Boeing fidgety.
Sorry I have bad english I am from norway.
