    I think the only one that was actual canvas fabric is the Kompact Kamp. Had one for many years and it is sturdy. The great part if you roll up to your campsite and it's raining...drop the jacks, unlatch and flip the top and step in. You can set it up from the inside and your off the ground. That canvas holds up in a Florida downpour. I was snug as a bug in a rug and all my gear was with me.

    I have a one-off motorcycle style you might like. it sleeps on a twin size bed, solar panel with stereo and led lights. a 12 volt cooler is added, and 110 power can also be accessed . it has storage thru out in the flooring and a kitchenette on the back. it is 11.5 feet long and I pull it with my motorcycle

    I have a 1999 Roll a Home pop up camper. Have pulled it behind 2 different Gold Wing Motorcycles have put approximately 100,000 mi!es on it. This past summer I got a new tent made for it by the manufacturer. First time he ever did this he said. Trailer body was still good just 20 summers of use & the tent part was getting a little ratty. Got the zip on 6 foot square add a room & zip on awning. It has a queen bed with I think it's 18 cubic feet of storage under the bed. Oh I got it with the A/C port too, so now I carry an A/C around on the top. I run a side car rig. I'd get better fuel mileage if I towed it with a small import car but hey I like motorcycling. One thing to remember is when pulling a 500 pound camper with a two wheeler , the camper will tend to pull you over in slow turns in a camp ground or anywhere you are going under 5 mph. Alot of people who pull the bigger more room & storage type campers do so with trike kit bike, gold wing, Harley, ECT. Stability!! That's why I have a side car rig, cheaper than one of those trike bikes. My wife & I camp, so we have both propane and electric cooking appliances, coffee pot for either way, electric blanket encase it gets cold, pots & pans , cast iron skillet & small cast iron Dutch oven. Many memories.

    • @baltsosser
      @baltsosser 4 роки тому

      @@iwilltubeyouall Indeed. I've spent quite some time thinking like some of the comments here. In order to do that successfully it has to all weigh in less than about 300 pounds which only leaves 50 pounds for any gear. The materials best suited are aluminum. that means specialized welding gear, and knowledge. Carbon fiber would be an excellent material as well, but is prohibitively expensive. Engineering something like this is not easy. It's taken a couple of years, but I finally have a design I think would work. I'll try to refine it while I'm using the Mini Mate camper shown here.

  • @DeanMk1
    @DeanMk1 4 роки тому +5

    The only one you're missing is the Slipstream, which is one of the quickest to setup motorcycle trailers I've ever seen. A clamshell lid springs open, hinging on the front end and as it does, it brings up fabric sides and windows that snap to the lower half of the trailer. You can go from parking the trailer, to relaxing in it in about 3 minutes without hurrying. Sleeps one and the trailer still offers about 38 cu. ft. of storage under the bed.
    Its a great idea and a highly ingenious design. Used to be made by Open Road Outfitters, who also made a couple of campers you did feature here.
    Not sure who's making it now.

    I think any trailer that is bike(motorless) towable, is the best way to go, off the grid concepts don't include a gas vehicles. So anything compact/lightweight enough yet durable in it's design is what most active campers I know are most interested in.

    Make your own custom one from scratch. I suggest not using wood. Check out poly core aluminum sheeting for both form and covering. It's very light, sturdy and easy to work with. (Often used for making signs) don't rush either, take time planning your trailer.

    This was great I especially enjoyed #10 and #6.
    Both of which my power-chair can pull.
    I imagine I could have made something like #6 with three sections.
    The first of which would be a windowed bottomless box my chair would
    drive in. The second box would be the wheel base and main body for the third box
    to slide over. A solar panel on top of it would be consistent power to a 24v Batt-Bank.
    There could be a full light system for headlights, turn signals and back lights.
    Lights for the inside and power for tablet and phone. Which I have on my chair for
    vidding, directions and calling for help. Of course my chair could be charged from
    such a power bank, so that my travels can be uninterrupted. I will eat beef jerky and
    catch rainwater from the onboard rain-catchment system. Splashing traffic shouldn't
    deter my glossy white boxes. When I am done fishing, I will come home across town.

      Watch your battery weight for your stored power ( and look into golf cart batteries ) they work top notch, you might be better off with an inverter system to cycle enough power to recharge your power chair as well, you might have better luck that way, good luck, Hopefully well see it here too

    The best bang for the buck can be towed by bicycles or e-bikes with full throttle. Add some kind of folding/suitcase solar panels to recharge the battery/batteries, cell phone, laptop, blender, low power A/C, fans, LED lights and you're rockin' a super cheap trek across the country.

    The problem with bicycle trailers is the complete lack of any practical solutions, and the complete lack of any agreed upon goals. The idea that you can tour in a conventional vacation/travel mode with a sail behind your bicycle, and/or net weights in the 100 pound plus range is ridiculous. In comparison for a mere 40 pounds you can have a pannier set and gear that is much cheaper, doesn't increase the footprint of the bike hardly at all, and gives you tent and sleeping bag, and all your gear.
    The goals part is the whole piece. Clearly the motorcycle options are for people who are touring, in vacation mode, or similar. But to the extent that any of the options for bicycles are even usable, they could only be for something like hobos moving around a city as homeless people, or maybe someone in a specific situation who wants to say cycle 5-20 miles a day along a canal towpath. This doesn't compare well to the 60-100 miles a day possible in almost any terrain, with standard bike/pannier gear.
    One thing that happens regularly on bike tours is you get forced onto some pedestrian structure like a footbridge, where you can barely pass on foot pushing the bike. Let alone with some huge trailer contraption.
    That said, I really enjoy seeing the things people have come up with as options for bicycle trailers.

      You make some good points about the advantages of traditional bike touring. None of the bicycle trailers shown are light enough, or small enough to be convenient for riding long distances in a single day. However, for someone who hates sleeping on the ground, a flat, level bed, looks very appealing. And a well designed trailer could keep all your stuff conveniently located. There is no doubt that a trailer would significantly reduce the number of miles you could cover in a day, but some people don't need to go very far each day. I am looking at building a pretty aerodynamic recumbent with 4 wheels. It would be a mini RV. If I can carry everything I need to be self sufficient for 4 or 5 days, I can ride 30 miles each day and still make it to the next town in those Western states where towns are far apart. Making only 30 miles a day might drive some people crazy, but I plan on a long, leisurely trip.

    I'd rather be surrounded by something solid when I'm out in the elements,given the choice. As opposed to paper thin, stitched tent fabric. I'd go with the bike caravan. 👍

    I think you guys have to update the list, with a killer option. That option is my kaprite cot. it costs less than $ 150 and weighs less than 10 pounds. I put it on top of my car or even on the side of my car. I can also take it in my bike trailer. I can also put it inside my house or garden

    I didn't know bicycle camping was a thing, at least not one that had to be towed. How about a nice little tent that you aren't dragging behind you all day instead? I've towed trailers behind my motorcycle, but I don't peddle.
