I truly enjoy making table toppers/runners and coasters. The " light at the end of the tunnel" doesn't seem so far away as with a full-size quilt. Thanks for the encouragement!

Crisis pregnancy centers love to have baby quits as do most Hospice groups. Our quilt guild makes many and turns them in every 6 months.

Now that you mention it, Nikki, I wore a quilted circle skirt was back in 1957-58 - middle school. I had forgotten all about that. I even remember it was like a light turquoise color. It was the time of the poodle skirt era. Thanks for the memory. ❤

    Yes!! I 100% agree!!
I am working on finishing a huge (queen-sized) quilt right now. I told my husband that once I am finished with this quilt, I am going to work on a series of smaller quilt projects, such as wall hangings or tote bags, to fill in the gaps. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE making big quilts, and I already have on hand all the fabrics and notions I will need for at least six more quilts. However, I don't have the financial resources right now to buy more fabric, so I am trying to space those six quilt projects out so that I can have those projects on hand for some time. Therefore, I am going to fill those spaces in between quilts with other projects using the scrap fabrics I already have on hand. Like you said, it scratches an itch to be creative without feeling overwhelming or budget busting.

If you want to make something last longer try English paper piecing as it takes a bit longer than machine sewn items but you still get accuracy from the papers. It’s a great way to use up scraps too.

I like small projects. I don’t like quilting big projects on my sewing machine and good long armers aren’t easy to come by in the U.K. I end up hand quilting my bigger quilts which takes ages! Baby quilts are great but I’d rather do wall hangings or cushions. Project Linus take lots of different sizes of quilts. In the U.K. they don’t want batting in the smallest baby quilts so check their guidelines.

I like to make bed runners. I use them to cover my pillow section so it's very easy to make a bed. no tucking the comforter around pillows. Just throw this bed runner over the pillows and bed is made with no tucking. Make runner the width of the bed by about 24 - 30".

My foray into quilting came one Christmas after I saw YT video featuring this book. It's called Pin Pals, and I received it as a Christmas Gift that year. I figured it would be a great way to learn how to quilt without using up too many supplies. I got through half of the book and then moved onto something else. I did give almost all of them away as gifts. I still have to go back and finish all of them. Those pin cushions are my favorite things! I can turn those tiny quilt toppers into anything, right? They don't have to be pin cushions!

When I first got into quilting, I read through the Farmer's Wife 1930s Sampler Quilt book for fun! I haven't made any blocks, but maybe I'll get there one day. Also, Quilts for Kids is another organization that gives donated quilts to kids in the hospital. My son got a baby quilt from them when he was in the NICU.

My mom would hand quilt all of her quilts. She hardly ever watched TV, but when we did, she'd be sitting by her standing hoop doing intricate patterns. I'm not that girl-at least not yet. It's easy to get intimidated when you see those masterpieces throughout your childhood. This gave me the perfect little pep talk. I did a bookmark and a mug rug both quilted. It is such a happy feeling to do a project that isn't necessarily grand but is the perfect bite sized nibble.

Wonderful ideas, as usual. Thanks for the inspiration Nikki. My sewing guild makes quilted lap quilts (usually 36x42" +/-) and donates them to the local children's home, nursing homes and homeless shelter. They are always appreciated.

I agree, small projects are more manageable for me. Several years ago I made a quilted cover for my heating pad to replace the flimsy cheap flannel one. A lap quilt may be a good alternative to a baby quilt and they make good sofa throws.

Hi! Norway here. Great list of things to use my unfinished patchworks in. Thank you! And btw, you definately saved my Christmas shopping budget this last Christmas, with all the fun little things you have taught me to sew from my stack of fabric that I orignally planned to make HUGE quilts out of🤣I've made a bunch of the tissue-holders and book sleeves. 🙌I even made myself a book sleeve for my Bible! 😀

Thanks for the ideas. I'm hoping to make a decorative throw for the end of my bed some day. The kind you see in hotels, it should be only about 1/4 the size of a full quilt. (I cannot think of the name of these). I have also made some cuhion covers that I exchange with others in the house. I like different covers but can't stand too many cushions.

For mine, before I bind them, I cut two squares and press them in half diagonally. I baste them onto the top corners and bind the quilt. They create little pockets for a wooden dowel. I hope that makes sense!
