With all the sealants, loctite, permatex, silicone etc. you use I really appreciate that you give an explanation of the proper application for each.
That said, I don't think I'm alone when I wish you'd rate them for taste.

Unfortunately in my 45 years on the wrenches, I have managed to have more then on surprise taste test.
Don't think I would recommend any of them as condiments. But I will say this.
The 515 is a little too sweet for my taste.

@@wornoutwrench8128 I like the 515 just fine. But then, I've always been more of a sweets guy. My absolute favourite though is Shimano Anti-Seize paste. Beautiful stuff. Just the right balance of everything, and its ability to coat everything perfectly is second-to-none. It's the perfect accompaniment really.

Am I mad or is this an incredibly complicated way to propel a machine? Do modern machines use boxes and drives this complex or is everything just hydraulic motors and pumps now? Is there a benefit to a physical drive like this?

Great work on all your videos! When you are setting up the bearing "C" value with the shims, once you have the desired stack up you can throw the cover in the lathe and machine the face and shoulder in 1 setup to the desired length. No more shims! This way you don't need to worry about the silicone between all the shims.

3 years later. Now I comment on watching you work. I have a medical professional back round. Spent time in the military. We had to fix our equipment in the field, with limited tools and time. What we did have plenty of was people with knowledge of various mechanical disciplines and talents. When you lacerated your finger in episode1, I could dress your wound. When you explained the steering clutch mechanism, I could follow your instructions. When you worked on your compressor, I related it to the heart, pressure and wiring. I was an instructor for the Army's Cardiovascular Technologist course for 7 years. I admire your work ethic and your sense of humor when faced with challenges. I like the PUP on guard for any unauthorized personnel that may be scurrying around your AO (Area of Operations) You have a great family and many supporters out in the world. God bless and keep up the great work and content. Peace from West Texas.

The most amazing thing is that OC 46 WAS BUILT BEFORE YOU WERE BORN, and You have limited information available and No OEM parts. I want to see You actually load a single axel Gravel Truck. You could not possibly have a customer who wants to pay You for all the time You put into that machine. Your time and shop time has got to be $1000 per day for based on 8 hours. You have more than 2weeks and were proficient.

Hey Wes, I can attest to certain oils eating yellow metals. I believe it's EP oils that contain active sulfur if I'm not mistaken. Last place I worked had a bunch of gear shaping equipment where the cutting oil was also the lubricating oil for the helical guides, which were bronze. A few of the second hand machines we got were eaten alive by whatever oil they were running and we had to replace the guides. Finding guides for Sykes gear shapers is crazy difficult. We had to make sure to run an oil that would not eat the guides and Allegheny Petroleum makes an Altracut lubricant that is dual purpose lubricant and cutting oil with no active sulfur that won't eat yellow metals. Ran it for years with no ill effects. Somewhere I have pictures of the guides that were all ate up. It was impressive looking.

I have spent my entire life using diagonal cutters to remove cotter/split pins. What exactly do those gurus suggest that we should be using? I did used to sell a cotter pin puller but it would require hooking the eye of the cotter pin and overpowering it to remove the pin. And in the process a person would probably end up with some sort of injury from doing that. So, give me the controlled leverage of diagonal pliers any time.

OK I'm 69 years old and hearing a woman say "I've already gone through a six pack and I need more" STILL makes me light headed. Thanks!

Oh, I disagree on the LocTite 620 bearing retainer. That's stuff has worked countless times for me, permanently. Worst problem I've had is getting stuff back apart afterwards. Prepare to break out the torch.

I had heard the gl5 wasn’t safe for yellow metals and the gl4 was ok for them. At least that’s what the internet told me on the Jeep forums for my 79 transmission, I believe that trans called for gl4 though. But I have been fooled before. I could only find the gl4 at NAPA and that was 10 years ago so everything might have changed by now. Replacing the reflectors on a bad road is like fixing the a/c on a car with not brakes. Seems like you have a lot of time in this machine Is it worth all this time?

Regarding the GL1 vs GL4 gearoil issue. I once had to replace a manual transmission on a early 90s Toyota Hilux, because someone filled it with 80w-90 GL5. When the service manual specifies GL4. The GL5 ate up the bronze bushings. It was a Toyota Dealer who made the mistake Actually. They provided us with a replacement gearbox tho.

    Dear Me. Wes.
👍👌👏 Simply fantastic, extremely well done again! Congrats. I'm even more impressed because, good grief, I wouldn't have the patience for that crawler. The owner seems to love his little Oliver very much to let put in such an amount of effort. I really don't want to know about the costs. But who will put a price tag on a love!? 😁
Anyway: I can hardly wait to watch the next part.
Thanks a lot for making teaching recording editing uploading and sharing.
Best regards luck and health to all of.

Hey Wes, I like how you never give up on a piece of equipment. Too often we just chuck a broken piece of machinery or a tool and waste our money on a new one when the old one could have been repaired. Thanks for your work!

Holy crap, that 'u-joint' needs a cover to the operator safe.
Damn, NOBODY uses threaded studs to guide on gasketed covers!

A lower gear set would of been nicer than that reverser. Besides, you had both two transmissions you could mix and match to get a full set of gearing in good condition, including the poor quality reverse gear on the donor transmission. Since being too fast was an issue.
EDIT: Also, the GL-4/5 were only corrosive above 250 degrees, which wasn't common (since melting your drive train is usually frowned upon), but now you can get MT-1 GL 4/5, that is not corrosive under the entire temp range.

I've spent alot of time around agricultural communities here in Saskatchewan Canada and I can relate to the craziness of harvest you speak of Wes. Grid roads become dangerous too. It's almost as crazy as a "Bangladeshi ship wrecking yard."

I definitely hear you on the craziness of harvest time. Been though corn harvest in Indiana; and cotton harvesting time in Texas (which was even crazier before they vacuumed the cotton or had rapid boll that would be "ripe" at a predictable time). Good Job!

Grampa Frank rant: You are not stupid! Your ability is well above a "wrench puller". An extra moment to diagnose the correct solution does not make you stupid. Please quit being so hard on yourself. BTW, another great vid, as usual. :)

I have seen damage by using the wrong gearoil. Old classic Peugeot cars use a bronze worm drive rear end and those *must* (!) use plant based (ricinus) gear oil, if you use normal mineral oil you'll destroy those bronze gears.
Motul makes a GearV Ricin SAE90 oil.

Old steamfitter trick: Coat both sides of gasket material w/oil, let it soak in 15-30 min's, lay material flat on part, use a small ball peen & tap around edges & bolt holes. Voila: New gasket & no razor blade required.

Oh My God. SPILT PIN. I don't believe it. A cotter pin holds (or used to) a bike crank pedal on. A split pin is used to secure nuts, etc.. Not all 'nuts' of course - unless you'r a robot maybe.

Oh those sump screens. I thought I had made the worlds worst purchase on a "low hour" JD 4400 HST. First time I used it for an hour I lost ground drive and lift hydraulics. After a white knuckle ride back to the shop I found the sump screen covered in goo. Clean screen and change oil. Trouble free for the next 6 years.

Probably more expensive, but better when assembling parts that do NOT have very close tolerances - Pertamtex The Right Stuff. Better than plain old RTV.
