Playing Defence... and losing the initiative

  • The mindset of "playing defence" is dangerous... in sports, in business and in life.
In golf's FedEx cup this year, Scottie Scheffler started with a 10 shot advantage, 6 shots ahead of Rory McIroy. Rory knew that to have any chance at victory, he needed to attack the golf course and make things happen. That's what he did. Scottie played consistent, but you got the impression that he was "protecting his lead" rather than seeking to extend his advantage.
    Rory won.

Very interesting. We could also give the example of chess. If you are defensive, it is you running behind your rival. If you are attacking, you are in the best position of creating. You are thinking about how to win and your opponent has only time to defend.

I agree very much with your thoughts, Connor, in your last video, Connor. Thank you very much for that one. I guess that trying to protect your golden castle as your only one target is the beginning of the end, the best way to loosing it one day, sooner or later. One of my mantras is that you start getting old the day you are not curious about new things, about learning something new (personally or professionally), doing something new or launchig new projects to move to new responsabilities in order to do new things that add more value or, at least, do them differently, more efficiently in your well-known business, department or daily job. Innovate or die! (Miguel de Unamuno dixit)

Very well said. I can relate to it. I was top rated in my team once but then new people came in my team, old work got automated. Now I do not have advantage of knowing better and more and feel I am same as other newcomer in team. I became to defensive!

Thanks Conor. A lot in today’s video. And a lot that leads into other areas that need direction and guidance. For example, how do you know where your innovation path is and leads.
    Anyway, super stuff. Again, thanks.

I think this is applicable on other aspects as well, in products the only long term way is to constantly innovate and develop your knowledge.

Really great video Prof. Conor from Uruguay ..nice topic on playing defensive. I had a situation recently wherein a project I had to work offensive and defensive at the same time. Offensive to get things done and defensive so not break things that are already built so finding the right balance.. btw are those body guard behind you :) in the initial part of video...
